OUR TOWN + Fresh faces Siesta residents now have a new place to worship on the Key. Life in the Son Ministries, a non-denominational church that opened in the spring, is currently recruiting new members. According to the Rev. Michael Broy, attendees can expect a Christ-centered atmosphere of grace and healing, with relevant, practical teachings from the Bible. Worship music includes contemporary, celebrative praise and intimate worship. The church is hosting a meet-and-greet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the Bank of America community room, 1237 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota.

Sand sculpting events coincide The Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition is up against another sand-sculpting event the same weekend. But reality TV stars could help build hype. When Rusty Croft wriggled into the jaws of the giant beast, a crowd gathered around its jutting teeth, ready to spring into action if the unthinkable happened — the sand that composed the hulking fish sculpture collapsed. The frightening denizen, a sand sculpture crafted by Croft and Chris Guinto, won second place at the 2011 Siesta Key Crystal Classic. This year, the event
that generates $2.5 million in economic impact in Sarasota County faces competition from an overlapping sand-sculpting event in Fort Myers, which has already lured the 2011 champs. The World Championship of Sand Sculpting will be held starting Nov. 6 through the weekend on Fort Myers Beach; the Crystal Classic is slated for the weekend of Nov. 9.
The problem, explains master sand sculptor and Crystal Classic organizer Brian Wigelsworth, is that there’s a tight window for fall sand-sculpting events. There is usually a three-week span between the end of sea-turtle nesting season, hurricane season, and Thanksgiving weekend. Sculptors, many of whom come from around the world, are not likely to travel during that week-
end, says Wigelsworth. That ideal period is two weeks in 2012, making the overlap nearly inevitable. This year, Fort Myers sand-competition organizers invited Dan Belch and Karen Fralich, the duo that won first place at last year’s Crystal Classic, to Fort Myers before Crystal Classic organizers could invite them

LURE WELCOME By Alex Mahadevan | News Editor Mallory Gnaegy
Scott Dolan, owner of Big Water Fish Market, stands behind the counter at his six-month-old store. During the recent tourist season, he shelled out 65 pounds of fish per day.
Big Water gets big boost from tourists Scott Dolan went from owning and managing the clubhouse at Bobby Jones Golf Course to owning the only fish market on Siesta Key. It was a coincidence that Scott Dolan happened to open Big Water Fish Market exactly at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, 2011. The date was planned, but the entrepreneur had to open an hour late because of a tardy fish delivery. Now, six months into his ten-
ure as the owner of the Siesta Key store, the fish monger prepares for the dog days of summer during which Siesta sees fewer tourists. But after running out of food last week at a delayed ribboncutting ceremony sponsored by the Siesta Key Chamber of Com-
merce, Dolan thinks he has made his mark with the local community and hopes for its support through the next months. Dolan has been vacationing on Siesta Key since his youth, which he spent in Ann Arbor, Mich. Having worked at an oyster bar
