Scarborough Review

Church set to sparkle as it dreams of the future Words and picture by Mike Tyas A CHRISTMAS tree festival will spearhead the next phase of fundraising as a Scarborough church gets ready to sparkle as it looks to the future. The festival will be held at St Mark’s Church in Newby starting on Friday 2nd December with a grand opening by Scarborough’s mayor. A series of events will then be held until the following Wednesday. Money raised will go to an on-going campaign to raise funds for repairs and maintenance, as well as plans to build an extension at the rear of the church including a café, and demolishing the existing hall and replacing it with a family and youth centre. The total budget for the four-phase scheme has been estimated at £800,000. ‘St Mark’s has a tradition of holding Christmas tree festivals – we held them in 2002 and 2009 and we are continuing that,’ said festival organiser Carol Hagan. ‘In the past we have raised funds for local charities, now we need to raise funds for St Mark’s.’ The church has produced a leaflet advertising its fundraising activities and why they are being held. It was due to be distributed to around 3,200 homes within the Newby parish shortly before The Review went to press. It reads: ‘St Mark’s Church has been at the centre of its local community for over 80 years and our church building has played a part in the lives of so many people in all kinds of ways. ‘We believe our church will continue to serve its community for the next generation but to do this we need to invest in the current church building and rebuild the church hall so that we have a valuable community resource for the next 80 years. ‘We have a vision for our church and need your support – can you help us? We need to raise money to live out the dream of a fantastic resource that will help us to “Pray for, Love and Serve” the people of Newby and beyond.’ The Christmas tree festival programme: • Grand opening on Friday 2nd December, 7pm, with cheese, wine and entertainment. Tickets are £5 and available from Heather Petch, tel. Scarborough 369668. • Breakfast with Santa in the church hall, 9am-noon on Saturday 3rd, with school choirs in the afternoon. • Festival service at 10am on Sunday 4th December; Advent Evensong at 3.30pm.

Another tree will be included among the display which encourages families to sponsor a bauble in memory of a loved one. The church will be open every day, from 10am3.30pm. SAINT Catherine’s Hospice has nearly 30,000 reasons to say a big thank you after the final sum for this year’s Starlight Walk was revealed. Charity walkers raised £29,787 after completing the 6.5mile course that started in a flash of colour at the hospice off Throxenby Lane late on Saturday 10 September, took in the North Bay, and finished in the early hours of Sunday morning. ‘It’s an amazing amount – we’re really pleased,’ said Fran Kitson, St Catherine’s Digital and Marketing Manager. ‘We want to say thank you to all the walkers and all those that sponsored them. ‘it takes nearly £11,000 a day to keep the hospice running. Every penny raised will go towards patient care.’ The hospice’s biggest annual fundraiser was in its ninth year and attracted 630 walkers, many of who were dressed in line with the chosen ‘neon’ theme: ‘It looked amazing on the night. We loved the neon – it worked so well,’ said Fran. ‘We’ll be looking to next year to see how we can make it even better and keep it a nice, bright occasion.’ Fran said Scarborough’s event is given extra sparkle by its location: ‘The Starlight Walk is made so much more special by the fact that it’s held by the sea and not walking through a built-up city centre.’ The hospice thanked Hatton Arts for prewalk entertainment, Deep Sea Electronics for sponsoring glow lights, and Harbour Bar on Sandside for again providing ice cream and refreshments at the walk’s halfway stop. Meanwhile, entries are already coming in for the hospice’s annual ‘Santa Dash’, this year taking place on Sunday 11th December. Starting at 11am from the Sea Life Centre, dashers can choose either a 5K route or 10k for the more energetic. Entry is £10 and includes a Santa suit. There is a special offer for a family of four at £30. The event is being supported by the Sea Life centre who will provide refreshments and £5 entry on the day into the centre. n For details of the event and to register, call the fundraising department on 378406 or at their website at www.stcatherineshospice-nyorks.org. • Saint Catherine’s Hospice provides in and out-patient care, neurology support, bereavement support and day care for patients across a 1,600 square mile area, including Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Driffield, Hunmanby, Ryedale and Whitby. • Each year the hospice cares for more

than 2,000 people from that area, the largest geographical area of any hospice in Britain other than the Highlands of Scotland. It costs £6.2m a year for Saint Catherine’s to provide its services.
