Members of the Scarborough RNLI team pose with a visiting Shannon lifeboat in the new lifeboathouse
SCARBOROUGH’S new Shannon lifeboat will arrive with a big fanfare on 27 November, capping an exciting month for the RNLI. The new, state-of-the-art lifeboathouse, started in April last year, has just been finished and the lifeboat team is ready to take possession. It will be open to the public on the day the Shannon arrives, from 10am to 12.30pm. Hundreds – possibly thousands - of RNLI supporters are expected to turn out for the occasion. The Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat, named the Frederick William Plaxton after the principal benefactor, is expected at 1.15pm. It will be escorted by a small flotilla of other boats including Scarborough’s inshore lifeboat and outgoing Mersey lifeboat. High tide is at 3pm. The coastguards, a Sikorsky searchand-rescue helicopter and other emergency services will take part – subject to availability on the day. Continued on page 4.
