Scarborough Review Golf The Presidents Weekend at North Cliff was a complete success for Dave Ellard and his Lady wife Julie, with the organisation of the event and the weather all being perfect. Things got started on Friday with the Ladies competition. Eleanor Paterson (25) posted a winning score of net 72, runners-up Christine Toulson (31), Janet Hall (28), Clare Ellard (5) & Elaine Tighe (23) all finished on net 74. On Saturday it was the turn of the juniors and mixed pairs. In the Juniors, Ayane Butterworth (26) claimed the prize with a score of 45points from Marco Masucci (13) with 38 points followed in third spot by brother Nico Masucci (20) with 35 points. In the mixed competition the husband and wife pairing of Peter (18) & Patcharin (23) Harris claimed the win after a count back edged out David Butterfield (5) & Clare Ellard (5) both pairs posting a net 67. Sunday was the day for the gentlemen with Colin Goodall (18) recording a net 66 to pip Shaun Lofthouse (24)on the count back to claim the Gents Presidents Putter. Martin Laidler (4) claimed first place in division one with a net 69, James Blenkinsopp (6) and Steve Bennett(5) also recording a net 69. Division 2 was won by Dave Foster (15) with a net 68 edging out Mark Walker (11) on the count back. Simon Boddy recorded the best gross score of the day, a 2 under par gross 70. The East Riding Union of Golf Clubs scratch leagues are now about to stage their final games of the season with the new league format proving to be a success. In Division 2 Local club Scarborough North Cliff are level with Hessle ‘B’ at the top of the division both on 22 points. Hessle ‘B’ won their last home match whilst North Cliff tied with Beverley ‘B’ .The final matches see Hessle ‘B’ away to Brough and North Cliff at home to the KP Club.

Hornsea ‘A’ and Hull are tied on 22 points for the lead in division 1.Boothferry lead Division 3 from Hornsea B, the pair meeting in their final match. North Cliff held their 36 holes Championship recently, Rich Davis(5) posting a two round total of 139 to edge out Nick Timmins (9) by one shot.Third place went to Michael Dugdale(13) who posted 143. North Cliff also ran a Sunday Medal competition for those members not playing in the 36 hole’s event. A bit less stressful than the championship this competition was won by a relaxed Dave Gardiner (10) who put in a fine back nine to record a net 69. The Club Captain Barry Poynter (12) took second place with a net 71 and Sam Pickering (22) was third on net 73 just edging out Rowan Evans (13) and Robin Myers (7) who also finished on net 73 but lost out on the countback. Division 1 of South Cliffs July mid-week Medal was won by Dave Venner(9) with a net 67 from Phil Dickens(2) recording a net 69. Shaun Smith(2) was one shot further back. In division two Duncan Woodward-Hay (18) held off Martin Cappleman(18) by one shot with a net score of 67. Third place was claimed by John Gibson (22) after he finished on net 70. Saturday saw Mathew Tissington (11) amass 42 points in South Cliffs July Stableford to win Division 1. Sam Pottage (4) and Gary Thirkell (5) both finished with 39 points and Sam took second spot on the countback, despite Gary making an eagle 3 on the last. Division 2 was decided on a count back with three of the field posting 37 points.Michael Dennis celebrated the win ahead of Paul Widdowfield second with Andrew Noble third. Ladies non-qualifier fun competition. Gloria Pickering (13) brought in the Silver division flag having managed to get to the 18th green before using up all her shots. Clare Thompson (25) brought the Bronze 1 flag in after she also reached the 18th and Gwen Dixon (31) brought the Bronze 2 flag in from the 17th green. The Ladies were in more serious mode for the Medal 8 Competition on Friday when Gloria Pickering (13)clinched first place in the Silver division with a net 75. Second place went to Ewa Gracyzk (16) on net 78, Janet Howes (17) claimed third place with a net 82. In the Bronze 1st division Sue Negus (27) posted a net 76 for first place, Clare Thompson (25) came second on net 77and third was Maureen Jamieson (24) with a net 80. The recent Marie Curie Charity Golf Day at North Cliff turned out to be a huge success that raised £7,400 for the Charity. There was a great turn out of teams some from as far away as Warrington, Huddersfield and Selby but also many from the local area. The winning gents team on the day in the two from four format was made up of J. Earnshaw (6), N. Dobson (22), G. Kirkham (18), & M. Moore (11) with a score of 89 points and a back nine of 46. Two other teams equalled that score, M. Botham (15), A. Morris (14), K. Vasey (18) & A. Morris (14) bk9 of 43 and P. Petch (14), N. Fell (5), G. Hewitt (9) & R. Johnson (9) bk9 of 41. In the Ladies section the winners were J. Brown (20), M. Rennard (30), C. Pybus (14) & C. Ellard (5) with 68 points. However, the biggest winner of the day was the charity for when the raffle draw raised £1,705, that triggered a Bank Match contribution from Barclays of £1,000. The Charity are now looking forward to adding £7,400 to their coffers to help local people

in the Scarborough area. Special thanks sponsors The Vantage Motor Group (Toyota & Kia) and Lloyds Bank for their generous support. Snainton's Alex Belt continues to dominate the Yorkshire P.G.A. Pro/Am scene clocking up two more wins. Having already won the events at Ganstead Park, Mid Yorkshire and Crow Nest he has now added those at Forest Park and Springhead Park to his tally. His 66 for a one shot victory at Forest Park also enhanced his chances of winning the Yorkshire PGA Order of Merit.
