Don’t miss the chance to see Castle Howard as it was meant to be seen

Featuring Renaissance Paintings, Georgian Tapestries, and 18th Century Splendour:

For the first time in 84 years, visitors will be able to witness Castle Howard as it would have looked in the 18th century.

The grand re-opening — fittingly named Castle Howard’s 21st Century Renaissance — offers guests the chance to experience the newly revitalised Tapestry Drawing Room, Long Gallery, Grand Staircase, and a complete rehang and redisplay of Castle Howard’s collection of paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. Visitors will get to see the Tapestry Drawing Room for the first time since 1940 when it was severely damaged in a fire.

At the heart of the renovation is the truly magnificent Tapestry Drawing Room, which had been left a gutted shell since that tragic day.

That once-barren space is now completely transformed. Alongside an array of beautifully adorned furniture and furnishings, it now showcases 300-yearold tapestries originally created for the space in the 1700s. Woven in 1706 by John

Vanderbank, the four tapestries depict The Four Seasons in scenes inspired by the work of David Teniers. The room was historically the first of the State Apartments — a suite of richly decorated, interconnected rooms reserved for a visiting monarch or head of state.

The Long Gallery will once again serve as a grand showcase for Castle Howard’s celebrated art collection. It will feature Italian and Grand Tour paintings — including the renowned Pannini capriccios of Rome commissioned by the 4th Earl — alongside 18th-century views of Castle Howard itself.

Castle Howard’s 21st Century Renaissance opens on the 25th of April. Visit www.castlehoward.co.uk to book your tickets today.
