Going for the

century Snappy’s Saturday Scheme is one of the most popular gatherings with the children and young people. For ages five to 17, it’s an opportunity to play, socialise and spend one-to-one time with many of the multi-talented volunteers – and also a great chance for parents to hit the Saturday shops knowing their children are in a safe and welcoming environment. But the scheme is in trouble. To ensure the children can keep coming back every week Snappy must raise £10,000 each year – and that’s the reason for Club 100. Club 100 is an opportunity for 100 York businesses and individuals to donate £100 each year to the Saturday Scheme. The sponsorship would mean close involvement with Snappy, who would in turn provide a certificate of registration and add you to the Club 100 list. This includes publicity on their website, mentions in their newsletters and at their Annual Governors Meeting and other fund raising events. A pledgee will also receive information about the scheme, what the children are up to and what adventures they go on. If you own a business and would like to join Club 100, or if you’re an individual who would like to donate, visit www.snappyyork.co.uk/ Members or call 640562.

Volunteer Interview:

Alexander McNeil “Get stuck in… and enjoy it!”

25-year-old Alexander, a working doct or at Scarbourgh Hospital, talks about the fun he had volunteering at Snappy – and how it helped him to choose his career path. “I used to live next door,” says Alex, “and my mum suggested I pop round and say hello.” Alex began as a volunteer by simply playing with the children. “It was a no-p ressure environment – we’d just play and have fun. I voluntee red as much as I could, and went back as often as possible.” Alex was promoted to the position of manager for the Senior Snappy scheme, working with young peop le aged from 18-25. “I really enjoyed the annual parties. We’d all go out for a big meal and then on to a club. I never felt like their carer, I felt like their friend out for a few drinks.” When asked what he thought a good Snappy volunteer needs, Alex says you need to bring your skills to the table. “If you’re a musician, bring your guitar. If you’re an artist, set up an art table. The most important thing is to have an open mind and be prepared to play. Just get stuck in… and enjoy it!” Did volunteering at Snappy help in his decision to become a doctor? “Absolutely! Before I started at Snappy I had no idea what I wanted to do. Because of Snap py I knew that I wanted to help people for a living.” n If you are interested in voluntee ring at Snappy call 640562 or email snappyvolunteers @btconnect.com
