WALKING WITH THE WANDERER

Walk Information

Lying just to the north of Leeds, the parkland and woods of the Harewood House Estate offers a number of well-trekked paths. This walk follows the most popular route in the area, using public bridleways and a permissive path to circumnavigate the estate, avoiding the crowds drawn to the house and other attractions.

Is This Walk For Me?

A short walk, this is generally unchallenging. There are quite a few ups-and-downs but none of the slopes are particularly steep or long. A good portion of the route is on tarmac tracks, so most surfaces are good. Muddy stretches are possible at Direction Points 3 and 4. There are no stiles on route. The permissive path taken at Direction Point 4 is subject to occasional closure. Cattle may be grazing in the open parkland sections.

Getting There

The recommended starting point is the Harewood village hall where there is a small carpark (modest fee). An alternative starting point is the roadside parking alongside Wike Lane (Direction Point 4). Harewood

is 21 miles from York, taking the B1224 to the edge of Wetherby then following the A58 to Collingham and the A659. At the traffic lights in Harewood, go right for the village hall carpark (for the Wike Lane parking area turn left for about one mile). The best public transport option is to travel by train to Harrogate then take the frequent no.36 bus from the adjacent bus station to Harewood.

Refreshments

There are two options in Harewood, the Harewood Arms on the main road, and the highly recommended Muddy Boots café on Church Lane by the carpark.

What To See

The main attraction of this walk is the landscaped parkland of the Harewood Estate. There are good views over the park to Harewood House from Direction Point 3 and over the Wharfe valley from Direction Point 1. Red and fallow deer can be seen grazing in the park and there is a wealth of wildlife, especially red kites which can regularly be seen flying low over the village. The woodland, especially after Direction Point 5, has a good display of bluebells in spring.

Harewood Park and Woods

Time: 2 hours Distance: 4¾ miles

Directions

1. Starting from the village hall, turn right and continue ahead on the tarmac public bridleway between the walls. (If you are arriving by bus, cross the road and walk back in the Harrogate direction for about 100 metres, then turn left into Church Lane). Keep ahead at a cattle grid with a grassy slope now on the right. Follow the tarmac downhill to a track junction and signpost.

2. Turn left, still following the main tarmac track, up a slope. Go through a gate by a cattle grid (walking downhill between buildings). Follow the track through a further gate, now concrete, over a bridge. As you keep ahead, you’ll find yourself back on the tarmac with a house to your right. At a fork in the path, keep right on the signed bridleway continuing to a gate. Go through but, in about 75 metres, turn right (bridleway sign) continuing to buildings (Carr House). Go through the gate to the right. This will take you uphill on a rougher track into trees. About 200 metres up

the track, do not go ahead, but, when you reach a telegraph pole, hairpin left. This will take you to a track that appears to be sunken initially but soon reaches a track crossroads.

3. Turn left (Leeds Country Way sign). Now keep on this track through trees, dipping only to cross a stream, then follow it left downhill. At a track junction, again turn left, but in a further 100 metres turn right, (following signs) over a bridge to reach a gate. Through this, keep ahead and follow the roughly surfaced track uphill through some parkland. Stay on the clear track for approximately 1200 metres, until you approach a house with metal gates.

4. Just before the house, turn left and take the permissive track through two gates into the woodland of Wall Side Plantation. (If starting from the Wike Lane parking area, cross the main road, go through the metal gate, and turn almost immediately right to take the permissive path). Continue ahead on the clear track through the trees.

You should ignore all ways off and keep both the road and the wall within 75-150 metres of your right. Eventually, with a gate ahead, turn right (‘path’ sign) into trees towards an abandoned stone building. You will find a gate in the wall.

5. Go through the gate and turn left on the narrow roadside pavement. Keep on the main road at the traffic lights passing the Harewood Arms pub. About 50 metres beyond this, turn left into Church Lane to return to the start (if returning by bus to Harrogate the bus stop is opposite the pub).

An Easter Message

From The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.

I wonder what your favourite story is? Perhaps it’s a novel you’ve read recently, or maybe a book you had when you were a child. It might be a story you heard on the radio, or something you’ve been told by a friend. You might even be creatively minded enough to enjoy writing your own stories, using your imagination to shape those ideas into something you want to share with others. Recently I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the talented illustrator Jack Seymour, who has a wonderful power of storytelling through the art of lino printing, communicating things beyond words.

Whatever your favourite is, these stories help to shape us as people, especially those with a particular meaning to us. They become a part of who we are. I imagine we all enjoy stories and storytelling – storytelling has been part of our human culture for centuries. Stories inspires us. They share with us something about humanity, about community, and about how we can make sense of the world in which we live. They enable us to use our imaginations, to delve into someone else’s words, and they teach us too, and in some cases

shape who we are – they change us, they are transformational. It might not be surprising to know that, for me, it is the story of Easter which has been most transformational in my life. The Easter story is one which brings us joy and hope in new life – it is the foundation of Christian faith as we share in the death and resurrection of Jesus. So often we encounter Jesus in the Bible telling stories to his friends, just as we do today, and it is the message of resurrection reflected in nature and seasons which offers us hope today. The Christian faith is often referred to as ‘Good News’ – the gospel literally means Good News, a story which offers us hope in Jesus Christ.

The reality is that for a great many people, life is challenging. Our world which has so much that is hard to understand or live with – war, natural disaster, human suffering, grief, rising living costs and poverty – we can embrace the same hope of that Easter story for a world which is grounded in justice and peace. This is the hope I gain from the story of Jesus, hope for a better world.

In all this, we become part of God’s story. We are living hope – in creation, in who we are, and in the stories we live and tell. We become part of that story of hope as we seek to make a difference to the people and communities around us. As we are shaped by stories, others too are shaped by the stories we tell, and live. So as many of us exchange a card or greeting of ‘happy Easter’ – can I encourage you to consider

joining in the Holy Week and Easter services at your local church? And may I encourage you too to continue storytelling, to find joy and comfort in the stories we love, and embrace the hope that we see in God’s love.

I wish you hope and joy this Easter, as together we celebrate stories of new life around us.

Horoscopes

TAURUS 20TH APR – 20TH MAY

Taurean spirits always lift with the advent of the spring, and this year is no different. The 9th to the 11th is an interesting period where you will find you have much more confidence. You’ll be standing on your own two feet without relying on others. This is a good time for exchanging ideas and confidences as an old established friendship becomes much closer.

GEMINI 21ST MAY – 20TH JUN

ARIES 21ST MAR – 19TH APR

A bright and breezy month for most, with some powerful moods of self-determination and self-confidence. You seem to know where you want to go and what you have to do to get there, and there is lots of support from lovers and partners. There may be some temptation to go back and rehash old decisions and choices, but you’re advised to let things remain as they are. Some very nice romantic vibes for the young, especially where all the sevens are concerned – the 7th, 17th, and 27th.

I suspect the accent this month will be on jobs and careers, with some specific breakthrough falling into place on the 8th or 9th. New business ideas bear fruit, although it might mean some study is required to pick-up new skills. There is a gentle mood of change manifesting itself here, but this should be welcomed rather than resisted. Money spent on modest home improvements is a good investment, especially if it involves anything electrical.

CANCER 21ST JUN – 22ND JUL

A younger member of the opposite sex could cause some disruption this month, and you might have to use a firm hand to nip this situation in the bud. Not a good time for

playing “follow my leader” on the business/career front, and if anyone is going to do any leading, this needs to be you. This might create a clash of wills in an emotional relationship, but you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

LEO 23RD JUL – 22ND AUG

Time to walk away from situations which no longer make you happy. This could be relationships, jobs, lifestyles, and even parochial things like cars and TV sets. Your social life has probably become a little predictable over the last dozen months, so maybe that could do with a shake-up as well. You may be tempted to go with “the bird in the hand” but if you do that, you’ll never know what is waiting for you behind the bush. Follow your intuition and take a few risks.

VIRGO 23RD AUG – 22ND SEPT

Some strong travel aspects working well for you at this time— with any overseas links likely to get stronger. April 21st could be a particularly auspicious day for some “good” falling into place for you. Some interesting links developing with other people born in Taurus and Leo, and new friendships and

business partnerships bode well for you across the board. A gentle word of warning if you are doing any work with things of an electrical nature.

LIBRA 23RD SEPT – 22ND OCT

There is a mood of conflict moving through Libra at this time and if nothing else, you’re going to have to work damned hard and fight for what you want – and that’s just as applicable professionally as it is emotionally. On a brighter note, you may be pleased and impressed by your own strength and influence so you should have no difficulty in finding the strength to deal with any problems caused by other peoples’ stupidity and ignorance.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT – 21ST NOV

The feminine principle is in the ascendant here, so anything to do with making new girlfriends or doing something social which brings you into contact with women who share your views and opinions, bodes very well indeed. On the other hand, God help any misogynistic blokes out there who think they can get away with taking the women around them for granted, ‘cos if you do, lads, you’re going to come a right cropper! A

HOROSCOPES 16
STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: ARIES

party or special celebration around the 3rd or 4th and the 13th.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV – 21ST DEC

You may have to play the role of peacemaker or piggy-in-themiddle, which is actually something you are quite good at, although this time around you might find it a bit wearing. Someone close to you wants it all, and they want it now… But your task is to advocate patience and common sense. Don’t expect them to thank you for that advice though. Fun time around the middle of the month with travel aspects very strong, tying in with family reunions.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC – 19TH JAN

A very social month, especially between the 9th and 11th when you’ll be spending far more than you can afford on things you actually do need. Do not feel guilty about this in any way! Don’t worry too much about the welfare of other people, they’re probably stronger than you give them credit for. A lovely sense of freedom and adventure moves through Capricorn at this time, which you will find intoxicating and addictive. Remember to send out birthday

cards for the 3rd and 29th.

AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

In some ways a quiet month but also a very productive one. You find yourself drawing closer to a friend or colleague and enjoying new confidences and a sense of camaraderie. A very special night out around the 11th might cost you a few quid but it should be worth every penny, and on a wider level, any money spent on leisure, pleasure and entertainment might be seen as a bit extravagant, but money is there to be used, not sat on while you wait for the rainy day.

PISCES 19TH FEB – 20TH MAR

Not an easy month, but at the end of the day, a very productive one. You’re going to come in for some criticism around the 7th from people who really don’t know what the heck they’re talking about; this will be resolved by the 10th but it still leaves the sour taste of injustice in your mouth. You can hardly be blamed then, if you find yourself looking at different future pathways and choose to associate yourself with other people who are on your own wavelength.

Take Control of Your Retirement

Retiring is a huge milestone. In a nutshell, retirement is your chance to live the life that you’ve always wanted. Your chance to finally do the things you never could before. Ultimately, you just want to make sure you can live the way you’ve always imagined, without any financial stress.

Approaching a new chapter in your life can be scary, and change can be uncomfortable. But it doesn’t have to be. Having a financial plan in place can help put your mind at rest by providing a solid foundation for your future financial security.

It’s not a shock to learn that most things surrounding retirement start with an individual’s pension – saving plans they’ve been building up their whole lives. Aside from your property or business, if you have one, your pension is likely to be your largest asset. So, it’s crucial that you pay it the attention it deserves.

What’s more, it may be that over your career, you may have worked for many different employers, so may have built up a collection of various pension pots. You might also have personal pensions, especially if you’ve spent time self-employed. In certain cases, consolidating them could prove beneficial.

But what is Pension Consolidation? Pension consolidation is when you combine two or more pensions into one pot. You may decide to do this as you approach retirement or during your working life for a variety of reasons.

We’ve gathered some helpful information and put it into one of our free guides: ‘Pension Consolidation: The pros and cons you need to know’. This will help you to discover why consolidating your pension could make sense, as well as the reasons why it may not be right for you.

COUNCIL BACKTRACK ON CASHLESS CAR PARK COMMITMENT

When earlier this month Peter Kilbane, the executive council member for the economy and transport, announced that every parking meter in York would become card-only, few expected to see the decision reviewed so quickly, even those with genuine concerns over the policy.

That was until a public council meeting on the 20th of February where Cllr Kilbane did exactly this, announcing that two of the city’s main carparks — Bootham Row and Castle Car Park— will continue to take cash payments for the foreseeable

future. The change is a direct result of what the council called “strong resident feedback.”

Considering only 10% of the 1.5 million parking-related transactions made around the city each year are paid for with cash, this decision can be seen as a fair compromise that balances the need for the council to cut back on spending, and the need to make parking accessible to all — including residents who are unable to pay via contactless.

York City F.C. April Report

Without doubt the biggest news to emerge from the LNER Community Stadium this month was the shocking revelation that club ownership have opted to part ways with first-team manager Neal Ardley. Mr Ardley was just five months into a three-year deal but leaves behind a York City F.C. team that have won only two games in the National League since New Year’s Day.

minded”

Following his first home game in charge, Mr Ardley told me that the priority was to “get some structure in place — to show the players how to pick up some points” — it was in this goal that Ardley fundamentally failed. Under his management, the Minstermen won just 10 games out of 34 and he departs with York City just one place higher in the table (22nd) than where they were when he inherited the side.

With so little of the season left, finding a replacement had to be swift, and the club did exactly this. Just 24 hours after they announced Ardley’s exit, the club released a statement revealing that “attack-

Adam Hinshelwood would take charge “on a long-term deal”. 40-year-old Hinshelwood has spent the last 6 years at National League South side Worthing, where he oversaw their promotion from the Premier Division in 2022.

Following two losses and a draw in his first three games, the new boss has just eight games to save York from a dreaded return to the National League North via relegation. Next up are top-half sides Altrincham and Aldershot, games from which City will need to get something if they hope to reduce the four-point deficit between themselves and safety.

York City Football Club Foundation launch walking football sessions for those living with Parkinson’s.

Thanks to the support and funding from the Parkinson’s UK Physical Activity Grant, York City Football Club are running specialist Parkinson’s only walking-football sessions on the mini pitches at the LNER Community Stadium. The hour-long sessions are run by a qualified coach and aim to improve participants' muscle strength, balance, co-ordination, mental health, and well-being. The focus is on the fun, using football as the tool.

The YCFC Foundation Inclusion Officer, said, “For some time, we have really wanted to share our walking football experience with a wider section of the community, especially those who may not have the confidence to join a regular Walking Football session. It is well known that physical activity can really help with balance, strength and coordination as well as improving mental wellbeing, including confidence and self-esteem.”

few weeks has been great. Participants have commented that they are enjoying the fact they can come down for extra exercise and gain those extra benefits— and that everyone is “nice and friendly”.

The Parkinson’s UK-funded Walking Football sessions are free weekly sessions running on Wednesdays from 10-11am until July. All participants are asked to complete a registration form prior to taking part in their first session. You can email inclusion@yorkcityfcfoundation. co.uk or call YCFC Foundation on 01904 559508 to chat about the session before venturing down for the first time.

WE

I was lucky enough to find the time to visit the Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham this month. Three of us headed over for the annual pilgrimage to find out what’s new in the industry and meet up with colleagues to “get the gossip” on what’s hot and what’s not. First up we visited the excellent display stands that both Liebherr and Rangemaster had put together to show off their new refrigeration and range cooker designs respectively. Liebherr had some incredible kit on display that would be the envy of any household; think huge capacity and industrial cooling capacity with a price tag to match! Reassuringly they also have some fantastic products more suited to everyday use that showcase the company’s exceptional sustainability and efficiency credentials. Rangemaster were showing off their new line up of range cookers that have been re-designed from the ground up; that means larger capacity ovens, closer build tolerances and a new colour palette. Moving over to bathrooms and we were wowed by the huge selection of shower walls now available. These waterproof wall coverings can take the place of tiles and, while they can give the look of a tile, they can give your bathroom the wow factor with huge jungle murals or marble

replacements.

Finally, we spent the afternoon visiting our kitchen suppliers to find out what the trends will be for 2024 and it looks like more of the same with most kitchens falling broadly into two camps, either traditional shaker design or modern handle free (although we do have one design that has both!). New colours include quite a few pink shades and additions to the popular greens and blues of last year. Amazingly unpainted wood seems to be making a bit of a comeback with slatted wall panels set to feature in many homes this year.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE BOLLARDS IN FRONT STREET, ACOMB

“The bollards are disliked by many in the community, and we will use this latest funding to address that issue” say the City of York Council as they begin plans for a major resident-led redevelopment of Front Street in Acomb. The now infamous shopping area grew in reputation last year because of a controversial decision by York’s previous Lib Dem and Green council administration to install more than 130 bollards along the Highstreet. The bollards have been widely criticised by residents and businesses alike for their obstructive nature and for the fact they’ve reduced footfall.

A spokesperson for the Council said, “By working with residents and businesses we will find a way to make Front Street more accessible and welcoming. It is essential that the local community, including traders, are at the heart of any design process so we can use the funds in the best way possible and make Front Street a better place for everyone.”

Now, with the aid of £500,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the new Labour council are planning to make good on one of their campaign promises by consulting with residents to redevelop Front Street. Options include wider pedestrian crossings, new toilets, and improved parking for disabled blue badge holders.

We recognise that the works carried out under the last administration were not universally popular. However, there were some positive changes that we can build on, including repaired pavements and new accessible seating, tactile crossings and cycle racks."

HAVE YOU GOT A GARDENING QUESTION?

Q. Two friends asked me to identify this nice plant. They said it had big heart shaped leaves that changed colour in autumn. Vitis Coignetiae is a deciduous climber that likes humus rich, neutral to alkaline soil. It will grow in sun or partial shade, is very hardy, and is grown for its architectural foliage and brilliant autumn colour. This spectacular plant challenges the Russian Vine for vigour and easily beats it for beauty. The young shoots are covered with loose grey down and the huge leathery, three to five lobed, heart-shaped leaves 30cm in diameter are beautiful. The sunken veins create a rough texture on the upper surface, the underneath of the leaves is thick,

rusty-brown felt that feels like suede. The flowers are insignificant green in colour, borne in summer, followed by small, black, inedible grapes with a purple bloom appearing in autumn – they don’t even make wine! Admire instead the spectacular autumn colour creating a cloak of scarlet, mahogany and orange, bathed in autumn sunshine it is truly magnificent. When planting, ensure you give it enough space, grow it along a wall, and let it wrap its tendrils on trellis or wires to give it support, prune to keep within its allotted space because this climber is very vigorous.

Q. I have a shady area that is quite damp Have you any suggestions as to what I could plant. Ferns are the first plants that would be on my list. Of all nonflowering perennials, ferns are easily the most garden worthy. Offering an exciting variety of shapes and heights for use as specimen plants or

Scott Turner

in bold groupings. Most of the following ferns are of medium to large size, and will thrive given humus rich soil, moisture and shade. Asplenium Scolopendrium, Hart’s Tongue Fern, easily recognised by its long leathery, strap-shaped evergreen fronds and marked beneath with stripes of brown spores. Athyruim Red Beauty has a silvery leaf with red stems, herbaceous and very pretty, is good for the front of a border. Dryopteris Erthrosora Red shield fern is one of the most colourful of hardy ferns. Polystichum Setiferum Soft Shield Fern is a graceful and beautiful fern which develops a large, loose shuttlecock of evergreen, finely divided, dark green fronds. It will thrive on a shady bank or ditch. Matteuccia Struthiopteris is another choice. The bold, upright fronds of this fern, arching like the plumes of an ostrich, led to its common name

of Ostrich

Feather Fern or Ostrich Fern. The outer fresh green fronds of this deciduous fern are sterile, hiding the inner, dark brown fertile fronds. Plants that are good for interplanting with ferns, and also like shade: Ajuga – purple reddish or variegated mats of foliage with blue flowers in spring. Bergenia –has large, rounded, glossy leaves, often reddening in autumn with pink flowers in spring. Hostas really work well, with a vast amount of different coloured leaves. Astilbe have large frothy, conical plumes of red, pink and white flowers that rise above robust clumps of much divided, bright green handsome leaves in early summer and prefers a moist soil. Good luck!

SALSIFY AND SCORZONERA

One of the benefits of growing your own fruit and veg is being able to give unusual crops a go. Salsify and scorzonera are two I’ve occasionally experimented with. I say ‘experimented’ because neither has manged to produce impressive enough results to earn a regular spot on the plot. I’ll explain the drawbacks of growing salsify and scorzonera shortly, but first, in case you’re not familiar with either of these two niche crops, let’s take a quick look at both.

Salsify, probably the more commonly cultivated of the two, is best compared to a slim parsnip. It has the same tapering root but is thinner while the skin colour is a darker creamy brown. Scorzonera has some similarities to salsify, but the root doesn’t taper and is usually even thinner. Most distinctively, the skin is brown black rather than creamy brown, although the peeled flesh, as with salsify, is

white. Despite the differences, the two plants are often confused, not helped by the fact that scorzonera is sometimes referred to as ‘black salsify’. Botanically, the plants aren’t that closely related. Salsify is Tragopogon porrifolius and scorzonera is Scorzonera hispanica. Flavour wise, salsify is often considered the more delectable, sometimes dubbed the ‘vegetable oyster’.

I’m not in a position to compare salsify with oysters having never eaten the shellfish. However, while both it and scorzonera have a distinct and pleasant flavour, I’d always prefer a parsnip or carrot. But it’s not the taste of salsify and scorzonera I’ve found disappointing. Rather, for both, it’s the quantity and quality of the crop produced. Quantity wise— in terms of how many plants you get in a harvest— most other commonly grown root crops will give a better return for the space occupied. This is especially the case for the thinner rooted scorzonera. As for quality, in my experience salsify seems very prone to forking, that is producing several often intertwined roots that are difficult to prepare in the kitchen. Scorzonera seems less susceptible to this sin but is not immune.

Perhaps I’ve not grown them on suitable ground. As with carrots, I suspect sandy soil may help produce straighter and deeper roots. Another problem is the apparent vulnerability of the young plants. As well as being susceptible to weed competition, the grass-like tops of the young seedlings can mysteriously disappear. On several occasions my entire crop was scissored off at ground level by grazers unknown. Mice or voles were the probable culprits.

and mid-May.

On the plus side, if you can get salsify and scorzonera growing away, once established these aren’t crops that require much attention. Another advantage, as with parsnips, is hardiness— meaning that the roots can be left in the ground and dug up as required through the winter. A further bonus, should you leave any roots unharvested, is colourful flowers next season. Salsify is a biennial and scorzonera a perennial, so both will throw up flower stems in their second year. Salsify, which flowers pink, is especially attractive. Should you want to experiment with salsify and/or scorzonera now is the time to get both in the ground. Seed, which is easily sown as it is relatively large, is best put in the ground between mid-April

Sow in shallow drills four-to-five centimetres apart. If you only want to give one a go I’d plump for scorzonera. Although it’ll probably produce less of a yield than salsify, it’s more likely to give a decent shaped root.

York Hospital to lead ground-breaking cancer research

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £3 million to lead national research into the colon capsule endoscopy, a more comfortable device that could begin to replace colonoscopies as the NHS's go-to test for bowel cancer. Following a successful pilot of the devices in York and Scarborough due to necessity — when social distancing rules during the COVID pandemic made colonoscopies next to impossible— the trust has been chosen to lead its implementation in 30 sites across the UK.

A spokesperson for the trust has described colon capsule endoscopy as an easy-toswallow ‘camera in a capsule’, which once swallowed, travels through the stomach and small intestine to the large bowel. It then takes photographs of the inner lining of the bowel. The images are sent to a recorder that the patient wears, which is then downloaded. Eventually, the capsule passes naturally out of the body within the stool. Don’t miss Eimaan Culture and Community Services’ upcoming events

One of the things that makes our city such an extraordinary place to live in is the welcoming attitude of everyone you meet. As a result, it can sometimes be easy to forget that what underpins that inclusive attitude is the hard work organisations like Eimaan Culture and Community Services do to build support between our communities. They organise appropriate events and opportunities, provide lived experience expertise, and deliver cultural awareness training to improve wider understanding in the community.

In doing so, they ensure that underrepresented groups have access to the support they need. If you’re looking to learn

a little more about some of the lesser-known communities that make York so special, make sure to check out some of their upcoming events.

The first of these is Rebuilding Lives – 50 Years of Ugandan Asians; a historical exhibition celebrating the legacy of the 27,000 people of Asian descent that rebuilt their lives in the UK after they were expelled from Uganda in 1972. It is touring schools and public spaces around York throughout the rest of the year. Then on the 27th of March, you can Celebrate Africa Day by joining a local artist to create special cards. Next is the York Eid Party on the 27th of April— an afternoon of henna,

traditional food, tai chi, music and more. Finally, on the 22nd of September is the multicultural York Health and Art Mela festival. Entertainment and activities will showcase everything York has to offer, from local school choir-singing to Bollywood dance! Alongside the entertainment and great food, there will be information stands from the NHS and Arts sectors. To read about the events in more detail, head to www.eimaanccs. co.uk.

YORK LEARNING WIN NATIONAL AWARD

York Learning have been praised for “supporting people to achieve the best they possibly can” as they won a national award for their work to make employment in York more accessible.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for a new pastime or building the tools to take on a new professional field, York Learning is the ideal starting place. You can enrol on a course to learn how to do anything from accounting to the crafting of your own felt cocktail hat!

It’s due to that versatility, and their commitment to helping residents find their place on the career ladder, that they’ve been awarded something called the matrix Standard.

Unlike the 1999 movie of the same name, this Matrix has less to do with battling robots and more to do with York Learning’s success in ensuring individuals, families and communities across the city reach their full potential. Of the learners that the matrix assessors interviewed, a

whopping 98% said they gained confidence and improved knowledge and skills from working with York Learning. It led assessors to the only conclusion that the York Learning provide a nation-leading service to city residents.

Visit www. yorklearning. org.uk for a full timetable of available courses.

New care home opens at care village

Lavender Fields Care Village situated just outside Barmby Moor village, and close to Pocklington on the A1079 linking York and Beverley, recently opened the doors to its brand new, state-of-the-art care home. Though the village itself is only a few years old, its roots go back much further.

First given planning permission back in 2013, the proposed development has evolved over the years to become what it is today: a setting that caters for people from the very onset of care through to end of life, all at one location. The new care home, split into three distinct and self-contained wings, each allow for the care and support of 24 individuals, with their own kitchenettes, sumptuouslydecorated dining rooms and lounges. There are numerous, smaller quiet lounges and meeting areas, and other breakout spaces for people to sit in smaller groups, or even to sit by themselves and simply watch the world go by. Separating each of the units are secure manicured garden areas, that provide plenty of outdoor recreational space for residents to enjoy. Each of the 72 bedrooms is generously proportioned, with their own ensuite wet-rooms, that are built to the highest

specifications. Many bedrooms have large patio doors that open out onto the manicured garden areas, and those without have large, glass panel windows overlooking them instead, providing as much natural light as possible.

For those who are not yet at the point of needing (or wanting, as part of a lifestyle choice) residential care, we also have our wonderful, closecare bungalows. Each privately owned by those living there, many have said they are future-proofing their long term futures with us. Though they are required to have a designated care need to live there, most are able to live independent lives – either under their own volition or with the assistance of their partner,

or other family and friends. When the time comes for accepting an occasional helping hand, the domiciliary care team can ensure that independence is maintained wherever possible, all whilst providing that bit of TLC (tender loving care) and assistance when it’s needed.

While some retirement communities serve this need to a point, and external domiciliary care companies can make scheduled visits. However, our close care team only serve our village, meaning more constructive time spent with residents who need assistance, and no demoralising travel times between care calls for our staff.

Ultimately,

what happens when people get ill?

For those that live here at Lavender Fields, and barring the need for more specialist nursing care, we can ensure it is their home for life, and as their health journey progresses, they still live in the same location with their loved ones, with the same neighbours, and many of the same staff around them. With the care home open and admitting residents to make new memories with us, our village is now complete. You can find out more about the options avaliable and the philosophy that underpins care at Lavender Fields by visiting www. lavenderfieldscarevillage.co.uk.

GRAB A SEAT AT YORK’S ‘COMMUNICATION CAFÉ’

There’s nothing more important to getting by in day-to-day life than communication. Whether it's sharing the events of the day with loved ones over a cup of tea or seeking solace after a tough day, communication is key. Yet, it's important to recognize that many adults in our community face challenges with their speech, language, or communication.

Fortunately, Glossa, a speech and language therapy practice based here in York, are running their first Communication Café events this April. They will provide a welcoming and supportive environment (with plenty of cake and coffee) for individuals dealing with speech, memory, cognitive, language, or fluency issues.

The café environment will be social but supportive, with Speech & Language Therapists on hand to help where needed. The sessions are not limited to any specific type of condition but could be helpful for people who find communication hard after a stroke, live with Parkinson’s Disease, have experienced a brain injury, have a learning disability or a stammer.

Upcoming events are on Wednesday the 24th of April at Costa Coffee in Haxby from 10am12pm and Friday the 26th of April at the Folk Hall in New Earswick from 2-4pm in The Eatery. For more information about Glossa’s speech therapy services head to www.glossaslt.uk.

Overwhelming response to York's first memory tree woodland

The Memory Tree Co are revolutionising the way residents in York can celebrate the lives of their loved ones. The Memory Tree Co have announced they are accepting registrations for a local memorial woodland which opens in 2024. Those who register for the service will have a commemorative, native tree planted alongside the ashes of loved ones in this sanctuary for nature and wildlife. This unique approach allows individuals to create a lasting connection between their cherished memories

and the natural beauty of the York countryside. Registrations are now open for Memory Trees at the new woodland site. If you would like to find out more information about creating a lasting legacy for your loved one, register your interest at www. thememorytreeco.co.uk.

Supporting Older Relatives to Enjoy the New Season

Even though our older relatives may experience certain challenges that limit their access to the spring sunshine there are several ways we can support them so that they can still make the most of this vibrant time of year. I’ve put together a list of a few subtle changes that can help make a world of difference.

GARDENING THERAPY

Although, as our loved ones age, they will be able to enjoy their time in the garden with differing degrees of independence — it doesn’t mean it ceases to be important. Engaging with your garden doesn’t have to be as laborious as reseeding the lawn or digging holes for new shrubs. Lighter activities, such as planting potted bulbs, enjoying the scents of the herb garden, or getting tomato plants started in the conservatory can be just as engaging.

GETTING OUTDOORS AT THEIR OWN PACE

If your loved ones are less mobile, a simple lunch on the patio can be rejuvenating after months indoors. If they are comfortable in a wheelchair, getting out to a local garden centre can be a relaxing

change of scenery in the warmer months — just remember to take a blanket in case the sun goes away.

ENJOYING SEASONAL DELICACIES

Encourage older relatives to savour the flavours of the season by incorporating fruits, vegetables and herbs into their meals. Take them to local farmers' markets or grocery stores to pick out fresh ingredients and consider cooking Spring-inspired recipes.

SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

Spring often sees the resurgence of local events and village fayres. These are perfect for combating isolation by helping your older relatives stay socially connected and engaged with their community. There are many events around, but one to try could be Dementia Forward’s Wellbeing Cafes at Clements Road each Friday.

Supporting older loved ones to enjoy the spring season involves a combination of physical, social and emotional support. By encouraging them to connect with nature, pursue hobbies and stay socially connected, we can help them embrace the beauty of spring. Let's make this season a time of joy, renewal, and connection for our older loved ones.

REVIEW

Heavenly Desserts York

It’s not often that my son Joshua wants to spend the evening (especially on a Friday night!) with his mum. However, on mentioning Heavenly Deserts, he soon changed his tune.

The delicious dessert spot is a real hidden gem in York. From pistachio mochis to cannoli and everything in between, their menu offers the kind of unique sweet treats you just don’t get to try out at home.

Walking in from the (now typical) wet weather outside, it became immediately clear why Heavenly Desserts has been afforded such an irresistible reputation as we were greeted by a well-dressed member of staff who took us directly to our comfortable seat. The interior is extravagantly decorated, with lots of pink and floral décor — everything is immaculate and very well presented.

As we were handed the menu, our first obstacle presented itself— which option of the seemingly countless amazing deserts to choose from. With waffles and cheesecakes, as well as some old school dinner deserts, (cornflake cake being one of my favourites) and so much more, you’ll find that at Heavenly Desserts, so long as

you have a sweet tooth you’ll feel right at home. Fortunately, the obstacle didn’t take long to overcome— if you are picky like us, you can select their tapas-style deserts, so you don’t spend ages on the menu picking what you want. For drinks, we decided on a chocolate milkshake and iced rose & lychee martini to start with. The presentation of the drinks was also lovely, complemented by a sprinkle of something lovely and pink on the top. Josh decided that one dessert wasn’t enough and opted for both the Lotus Biscoff & White Chocolate Cookie Dough and the Cheesecake Royal! You won’t be surprised to hear that the portions are plentiful, and Josh really struggled to finish both desserts.

I had the ‘I’ll Have What She’s Having’ Waffles, which were freshly cooked and again the portion size is huge.

I don’t think there is ever any excuse needed to go out for dessert but, if you are looking for one, make that excuse to try out Heavenly Desserts for the first (or tenth) time. Head to www.heavenlydesserts. co.uk/stores/york to view the menu ahead of attending.

SNACKS

We’ve highlighted a couple of foodie treats that are well worth your attention — in between all the chocolate— this month.

TROPICAL SUN JOLLOF COOKING SAUCE, £1.99 from www. tropicalsunfoods.com

The only thing that West Africa’s most iconic dish is known better for than its delicious taste, is the time it takes to make – typically more than two hours! Fortunately, the team at Tropical Sun have captured all the flavour in this quick and easy-to-use sauce, so you can make jollof in a jiffy!

BONNE MAMAN CRUNCHY

HAZELNUT SPREAD, £3.20 from Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Delicious when slathered on toast, croissants, or brioche, over a quarter of the new Bonne Maman Crunchy Hazelnut Chocolate Spread is made from hazelnuts alone, guaranteeing an authentic flavour that you just can’t get enough of. Our office chef Kenz found it to be an absolute game-changer this pancake day, especially when paired with a couple of slices of banana!

JUST SPICES DISCOVERY SPICE BOX, £9.99 from www. justspices.co.uk

Embark on a solo adventure

Here at Savannah Travel, we have plenty of experience with solo travel ourselves, from joining other individual travellers on an escorted group tour, to an unaccompanied beach break. We understand that taking your first solo trip can be a massively daunting experience, so welcome you to ask as many questions as you can think of before you set off. Whether you are looking to travel independently, are friends who are looking for your own space while traveling together, or you wish to fulfil a personal passion for a particular destination, we are on hand to guide you through finding the right trip for you. Choosing to take a group escorted tour is a popular choice, particularly if you are looking to visit more than one place. From India to Italy, the USA to Australia, we work with a wide range of experienced touring companies offering trips to meet every

budget and activity level. Group size is also something we carefully consider when selecting the right tour for you, with groups ranging from 10 to 40 passengers!

Many operators are offering selected dates exclusively for solo travellers, while others offer reduced single supplements — special promotions where the single supplement fee is either heavily reduced or completely removed, on selected departure dates— or offer the option to share a twin room, where you will be matched with another guest from a similar demographic.

River cruising is always a popular choice for solo travellers — it’s a great way to visit multiple fantastic European cities in one trip, all from the comfort of your floating hotel.

You can choose to join other guests on guided excursions or, since many river cruise lines carry bicycles on board, you may

decide to head off for a bike ride to explore your destination. With our daily lives being so busy, you may decide to take your first solo break simply to recharge. From yoga retreats to just relaxing by a pool in a comfortable hotel with a good book, the choices are endless. We can help you find the right trip and experience for you.

If you are considering taking your own solo trip, follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ savannahtravelyork, where each Tuesday we share a range of solo travel options. These may be offers we have received with no single supplement, specific solo tours, or just an offer we have put together for your inspiration, priced with accommodation for a solo traveller.

To discuss a potential trip in more detail or to find out more about our experience of traveling solo, visit us at 88 Main Street, Fulford, or call 01904 623444.
