Community Gardens Pavilion project blossoms to completion

IN a generous display of community support, Bendigo Bank stepped up to fund a substantial amount of the required funds for the eagerly awaited Permaculture Noosa & Cooroy Community Gardens Pavilion project. In honour of their significant contribution, the pavilion has been named the ‘Bendigo Bank Community Pavilion’. The project, located at the end of Emerald Street, received a substantial injection of $90,000 from Bendigo Bank when Trish Radge, a representative from the bank, learned of the project’s progress. This generous donation

allowed builders to swiftly erect ironbark posts and install the roof, significantly expediting the project timeline.

The Bendigo Bank Community Pavilion will serve as a central hub for community engagement, offering opportunities for reconnection, learning, and workshops focused on soil care, survival food cultivation, medicinal herbs, and mutual support.

The community’s dedication and collaboration have made the Bendigo Bank Community Pavilion a reality, embodying the spirit of unity and sustainability.

Changing lives ONE BAGEL AT A TIME

BEZEL’S BAGELS ARE LIFE CHANGING, ROLLED BY HAND, ONE BY ONE, EACH WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF LOVE AND AUTHENTICITY

IN a small commercial kitchen in Cooroy, Nikki Bezel is making dough from his secret recipe, perfecting the iconic bagel. For Nikki, the number one ingredient is authenticity.

“It’s quite important. It is life changing,” he says smiling.

“The life changing thing is so funny, because I’m actually quite serious. It is life changing for me and it’s life changing for the bagels.”

Bezel’s Bagels was born out of the idleness and confusion of the COVID years and the first life the bagels changed, was Nikki’s.

He opens up about his bagel business, “It’s all on the line for me and the bagel. I’m throwing everything I’ve got at it and I’m trying to honour it’s heritage and mine. So far I’ve been lucky enough to have created a great product but in no way do I believe it’s over, there is so much more fine tweaking. I can see it, almost feel it somewhat. I know where it needs to be and the ‘how’ is becoming clearer and clearer every day. I’m so excited to get it there.”

When you visit Bezel’s Bagels, either at Eumundi Markets or the Cooroy kitchen shop front, you leave with more than a bag of bagels.

“These are my bagels. I am not trying to create a New York or Montreal bagel. So what I have done is researched; what is a Montreal bagel, what is a New York bagel, what is a Polish bagel? I’ve looked at the science, looked at the method, looked at bread in general. And I keep on pushing, I don’t ever stop. I’ve got a great product but I am trying to make it better,” Nikki says.

Nikki is an open and generous character, intrigued by human connection and always up for a chat. He loves nothing more than connecting and sharing stories about where food can take us. When he brings bagels to his customers, he is handing over a part of himself, sharing the life changing journey.

“The bagels are a part of my journey, and they are allowing me to keep the magic happening. I am trying to do them as best as I can, because the better I do, the better the journey. My interest in food, doesn’t come from the schools I went to or the chefs I worked under, or the kitchen’s that I’ve worked in, it’s me.”

Nikki was born in Kapuskasing Ontario in 1972. Referring to the popular nineties TV drama he says, “I am from Northern Exposure. Moose on the roads, bears on the roads. Where the local radio station is the heart and soul of the town, you get all your news. You wake up in the morning and see if you can actually go to school because it might be minus 50 and you can’t go to school because it’s too cold.”

His family are still there including his parents, “They are in the same house where I was born. That town, nothing changes.”

Born to a Russian dad and a French Canadian mum, he was raised French-Canadian but the Russian food dominated.

“Bagels were always there. They are sort of one of those things, they are special. They are a part of us, because we grew up around them. We grew up around old women making them. Dad still eats them and he is very finicky about his bagels. It’s something special.”

Nikki’s paternal grandfather changed his name from Berveschi when he fled what was possibly the Ukraine, at the beginning of the pre-Stalin era in 1912. “Mum was a career woman and Dad worked in ‘pulp and paper’ which was basically the New York Times. My town makes the paper for

Page 6 | Your Local Lifestyle October 2023

the New York Times. We are a lumber town. It gets put on a train and goes right to New York and gets printed on our trees basically.”

Nikki’s mum wanted her son to get a university education and he unquestionably tried to do the right thing by her.

“I went to Uni for three years in Ottawa and I was lost.” Eventually he went to a culinary arts school and became a chef.

“I was very lucky in Vancouver that there was this school and it was just a community college but it was amazing because I did eight months under a French baker. I did butchery with Germans. It was basically base level, what food is, starting with the master stocks. Starting from the very beginning.”

When Nikki first moved to Vancouver he slept on a yoga mat, with a picture of The Grateful Dead’s Gerry Garcia on the wall and a pile of beatnik books beside him. He went to culinary school, walked around the city, read books, met people. Once he found food he never looked back.

“Food was always a connection. In retrospect I can see what happened now. I needed to find out who I was because coming from a town that was so tight, coming from such a big family, two sisters and a brother, you get compartmentalised and told who you are. I did the cooking thing and loved it. Floated around from cafe to restaurants, beautiful places, all around British Columbia.”

He did a season of tree planting in the Arctic, where you can work long days, for up to three months in isolated locations,

and make good money. Enough money to start travelling the world. As a young, confident man, he made the random decision to head for Mexico.

“In September, it was 26 years ago that I left Vancouver on a road trip with some friends to San Francisco. They turned left and went to New York. I turned right and headed into Mexico. I am still on that road trip, only going back to Canada from time to time to visit,” Nikki says.

Eventually he arrived by boat at the Guatemalan border. That adventure led him to Lake Atitlan where he took a job cooking at a hotel and stayed for two and a half years.

Melbourne. He worked the restaurant scene before being lured to Darwin to work on the pearl farms. From there he went to Broome and worked as a cook on a charter fishing boat.

“Food is always the thing, it opens every door,” Nikki says about that time.

For a long time, Nikki left cheffing behind, became a photographer and focused on family. When COVID hit and he was stuck at home, he thought about his old bagel recipe.

“I always carried a journal of anything I created or that I came across. It’s an amazing book. It’s got old news articles and the secret to Bagelry,” he says conspiratorially.

“So I made one batch and I thought, oh this is cool! And then I made another batch. Then I started researching, and then friends started eating them, and then friends started coming over and demanding them!” he laughs.

Nikki realised he was onto something when he took one hundred bagels to the Pomona markets and quickly sold out.

to bagel making but is proving difficult to expand the production. I am trying my best to keep with tradition and not lose the proper integrity of the bagel, therefore progress is slow but the product is amazing and I can feel good.”

He left to go diving in the Caribbean and ended up opening a restaurant in an empty hotel on Roatan Island in Honduras with a bunch of travelling mates. Nikki travelled through South America, to Peru and Bolivia, where he ran a bar in a remote place in the Andes, popular with travelling climbers. He learnt more about baking from a Swiss German baker, before heading for Argentina and Chile. Funds were getting low, when he got an Australian work Visa and landed in

Nikki has developed a long fermentation process that really separates his product from other Bageleros. This process gives the bagels more flavour and makes them more easily digestible, while the hand shaping is essential for strengthening the glutens.

“My bagels are unique. They are unique because of the long fermentation periods that I put them through in order to develop the sour notes. I do three days of fermentation, then hand shape, boil and bake. This is a very traditional approach

Nikki the bagel guy, is now attracting bagel fans from all over, and converting others to the wonders of the humble bagel.

“What is of utmost importance to me are my beautiful believers. Those supporters and ever enthusiastic dedicated patrons. Without them this journey would not be possible. I am forever grateful for their participation in my bagel journey. Their smiles truly keep me going when it seems impossible to keep going. The journey is still what it’s all about. It’s about the connection.”

CINEMA ON THE ROOF IS RETURNING!

Face Off against PTSD at Masquerade Cocktail Evening

PTSD Dogs Australia launched a groundbreaking fundraising event this year; PTSD Face-off. Avid fundraisers have been raising funds to shave their beards on World Mental Health Day, October 10!

ANOTHER wonderful evening was enjoyed by local families back in August with the screening of the Lion King. Cinema on the rooftop at the Cooroy Library will return again on October 14, thanks to the Cooroy Future Group (the people who bring you the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre) working in partnership with Noosa Libraries and with the assistance of some generous sponsors. Bring your family, a blanket and a picnic to enjoy a movie together under the stars. Soft drinks and freshly cooked popcorn will be available to purchase. We suggest people arrive before dark to find a spot on the lawn while there is still daylight. We look forward to seeing families getting back together again!

Saturday October 14, 6 - 8pm. Movie: The Wizard of Oz. Cooroy Library, 9 Maple St, Cooroy. Entry by donation.

This unique initiative aims to raise funds for PTSD Dogs Australia while raising awareness for those suffering with PTSD. PTSD Face-off is a distinctive endeavour that challenges individuals to make a bold sacrifice by shaving their beloved beards. Currently there are eight people who are raising funds and will shave off their beards on October 10. Read all about them and their motivations at www.ptsddogs.org.au/face-off/

The fundraising efforts will culminate in the PTSD Face Off Masquerade Evening at Your Mates Bowls Pub in Cooroy on the evening of World Mental Health Day. A light-hearted evening of fun and frivolity. At 7pm a shave-off will be done as the fundraisers have their masks (beards) removed and guests will all unmask at the same time to demonstrate solidary and support for those living with PTSD.

PTSD Face-off is the brainchild of Roger Weeks who is going to face off against his PTSD by shaving off his beard, the mask which most people have never seen him without!

“I can give first hand testimony to the difference a PTSD Dog can make. My PTSD was at the point that I had developed an exit strategy to life. But thanks to PTSD Dogs Australia and my girl Rosie, my life has purpose again. PTSD Face-off is my chance to help raise awareness and to raise funds to pay it forward and help another veteran or first responder get a dog,” explained Roger.

WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND with Tony Wellington

HAVE you seen this butterfly? If so, it would only have been in the last few years. This is the Tawny Coster, a species that has colonised Australia at such a speed that it has left scientists in awe.

The butterfly has long occurred naturally in India and Sri-Lanka. Then it turned up in Thailand in 1984. Since that time, the insect expanded its range even further, travelling at a rate of 200 km per year through South-East Asia to Indonesia.

The first Tawny Coster in Australia was noticed in the Northern Territory in 2012. It has since travelled down through Queensland and is now evident on the Sunshine Coast. They are also beginning to penetrate NSW, having been sighted as far south as Nambucca Heads. In fact, the original predictions, based on the insect’s climate needs, were that it wouldn’t travel further south than Townsville. Clearly, nobody told the insect about that modelling.

Tawny Costers fly low to the ground and prefer open areas to dense undergrowth. The adult butterflies feed on nectar. The caterpillars munch on an introduced weed species commonly known as Stinking Passionflower or Love-in-a-Mist. Passiflora plants contain toxins that are appropriated by the caterpillars to help ward off predators.

This colonisation by Tawny Costers is a natural process, though it may have been enhanced by both forest clearing and climate change. The butterfly is not seen as being problematic in terms of its impact on the overall environment. Indeed, it is already considered to be a native.

LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay RECENTLY,

both Noosa Council and I found out that the operator of the Kin Kin quarry has lodged an application under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity and Conservation (EPBC) Act to clear more than eight hectares of remnant vegetation that is identified as containing critical koala habitat, as well as habitat for the grey-headed flying fox, greater glider, and a range of other native flora and fauna.

In their EPBC documentation, the operator identified that despite the quarry operations being historically subjected to a high level of public interest, they did not see a need to conduct any public consultation over this land clearing proposal as the proposed activities are intended to remain within their approved extraction area.

The Kin Kin Quarry was granted development approval in 1987 and is allowed to extract and screen up to 1 million tonnes of material each year from the site at Sheppersons Lane. Unfortunately, Council has no assessment role in relation to the recent vegetation clearing application, as it is proposed to occur within the existing quarry footprint.

As the quarry held development approval prior to the core critical koala habitat being identified in the project area in the South East Queensland Koala Conservation

Strategy 2020-2025, they do not require any further local or state government approvals to clear this vegetation.

The Federal Government has no role in regulating the quarry’s day to day operations or activities. However, the proposed vegetation clearing at the site triggers the need for EPBC Act referral, as the activity is likely to have a significant impact on local threatened species and ecological communities.

The EPBC Act is administered by the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, whose role is to apply the law to protect Australia’s unique animals, plants, habitats, and places.

The EPBC Act environmental assessment process requires the applicant to make a referral to the Minister Tania Plibersek via the Department, and once the validation period has closed, the Minister must make a decision on the proposed action within 20 business days.

Unfortunately, we are now in the referral process and the clock is ticking down on the 20 business days.

The quarry operator’s EPBC application identifies their intent to implement a staged Rehabilitation Management Plan that is supposed to result in a net gain of almost ten hectares of suitable habitat. However, Council is already involved in legal action with the operator over alleged breaches of the Quarry Management Plan and is taking

active investigative and compliance actions to ensure that the quarry operator meets the requirements of their current approvals.

You can read the details of the quarry’s EPBC application at https:// epbcpublicportal.awe.gov.au.

While the koala is considered to be one of Australia’s iconic native animals, almost three quarters of our remnant core koala habitat has been cleared in South East Queensland over the last fifty years, and our koala population is in severe decline and in danger of extinction.

According to the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-2025, “there is scope to reverse the severe decline in SEQ koala population if all government and non-government agencies work together towards a common goal”.

The report also highlights that “it is critical that we work together to recognise the importance and significance of protecting and conserving areas of critical habitat”.

I have written to Minister Plibersek to convey my objections to this land clearing proposal, and I encourage everyone to join Mayor Clare Stewart and I in writing to the Minister to request careful examination of the vegetation clearing proposal and make the right decision to protect this pocket of critical local habitat.

Minister Tania Plibersek can be reached at minister.plibersek@dcceew.gov.au.

TALKING FITNESS | and (older) women Move it or lose it, as the motto goes!

FITNESS is so vital for all human beings, of all walks of life… having numerous known benefits.

But I am going to delve into fitness for the older woman, and how exercise can really help. In more ways than one.

... and by ‘older’, let’s say 60 plus.

Fight Osteoporosis

As we age and being a woman, we are more at risk of developing osteoporosis. Especially if we have a family history of it, and usually after menopause. From the age of 50 onwards, our bones tend to break down at a higher rate than they rebuild, risking breakage. Upping calcium and vitamin D intake and moving more can help reverse the effects. The fitness aspect doesn’t have to be anything drastic at all. Even simple bodyweight exercises can help. Aiming to move for at least two hours each week.

Better Mood/ Metal Health

When we move, pick up our heart rate and even break a slight sweat… we can’t help but feel good. And there’s good (and scientific) reasons for that feeling!

Aerobic exercise helps to release ‘feel good’ endorphins, which help in so many ways. Moving more helps to lower stress levels, increase self-confidence, help you to relax

and lower anxiety or depression. Always start your fitness journey off gradually and make sure that you are doing something you enjoy. You’ll then be more likely to stick to it.

Increase Flexibility

Being supple is very important as we age, as it can help to prevent injury, allow you to move more at ease, help with posture and alleviate pain. You may not be that interested in being able to wrap your legs behind your neck or doing a back bend anymore, but the simple everyday go-to stretches are vital for keeping your body moving and your muscles feeling good.

And it doesn’t have to cut into your day too much. You might make it a routine when you wake up to add a 5-10 minute stretch program to your day and notice the

difference it has on your overall wellbeing.

Become More Social

As we age, sometimes social engagement gets a bit limited. So, getting involved in some group fitness, or a fun group sport or activity can be really uplifting. And not purely for the exercise side of things… but the social side too. It’s not unheard of that after these types of endeavours, the groups tend to go out for a coffee or plan regular lunch outings. Feeling included and being invited to things can up your confidence and make you feel good.

Improve Balance & Coordination

Many forms of exercise can help a range of things, including your balance and coordination. Challenging your balance under load, working your stabilising muscles

and strengthening your core all help to improve your balance, which in turn can help prevent injuries including falls. Also adding in activities that challenge your coordination can really help too.

It’s super important to stay sturdy on our feet, especially the older we get.

Gain Better Mobility

Getting from A to B might not seem like a great deal when we’re young and sprightly, but as we get a bit older, our mobility decreases and what used to seem a simple task can often become a challenge. By staying active, we increase our mobility and are able to move about more freely and at ease. Decreasing the risk of injury and getting the most out of life.

Feel Strong

Now, we don’t necessarily want to end up looking like Arnold’s sister… but there are many good reasons for being and feeling strong. Having the confidence and independence to do more tasks without the need to ask for help can be really uplifting.

All the above benefits of exercising are not new to any of us. It’s not rocket science at all… but just a subtle reminder in showing how each work hand in hand to help you to grow older more gracefully, comfortably and actively!

So, get moving. Keep moving. And enjoy moving! E x

“aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength”.

October is the month to PINK UP COOROY

THE Cooroy Chamber Of Commerce Inc is again raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. Carol Christensen, the primary organiser of Pink Up Cooroy said, that the McGrath Foundation will be receiving the funds raised once again this year.

The Mcgrath Foundation raise money to fund breast care nurses right across Australia. The foundation currently has 200 McGrath nurses who help individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological and emotional support for free.

Carol is encouraging Cooroy businesses to pink up in October and the last 2 weeks in October the Chamber will install Pink up Cooroy banners in Maple Street. Which business will be awarded the winner of the Pink Up Cooroy best window display?

The main focus is the fundraiser breakfast at the Cooroy RSL on Friday October 20, from 7am at $50 a ticket. Tickets are available online, head to the facebook page PINK UP COOROY and go to events.

WE all know how rewarding it is to be a mother but it can be tough not only on our physical health but our emotional and mental well being, especially when we are trying to balance family obligations, work, school, toddlers and the list goes on.

Adding to this, women have unique nutritional needs through every stage of their lives from the teenage years, child bearing, through menopause, and to the over 70’s. It can be a real balancing act just maintaining a healthy diet. Eating the right foods will not only boost your energy and maintain your weight but it can even help with mood swings, anxiety, depression, PMS and support you through the different life stages, as well as warding off of disease.

Of course, we have a number of things working against us but the number one reason for poor eating habits that I hear over and over, is “I DON’T HAVE TIME”. Time for everyone else but not yourself. There is no quick fix for adequate time management and everyone’s circumstances are different. But this is where the real danger lies. Often due to time constraints we are more prone to fad dieting, which leaves your energy low and your nutrients even lower. The wrong advice can even be harmful.

Your nutritional needs are unique to your circumstances. You might be trying to have a baby! You may want to put on a little weight! Or maybe you would like to have a healthy relationship with food!

Talking to a nutritionist who understands your unique needs can make all the difference.

Remember you are never alone!

Self-care goals

Empowering women’s wellness

with MARGIT CRUICE

SPRING is a delightful season on the Sunshine Coast, with perfect weather and longer days. Yet amidst the beauty, we face the busiest time of the year, often leading to stress. On social media, it seems like everyone is back travelling and enjoying life, and Christmas decorations in the shops remind us of the pressure to create special moments for our families.

But as I observe my community, I see many facing challenges with rising interest rates and the increasing cost of essentials like housing, food and fuel. It’s a moment in time that calls for reflection, and an essential time to set self-care goals.

As women, our focus often revolves around the happiness of our children, partners, family and friends. Yet, as the old song lyrics ask, “What about me?”. It begins by pinpointing an area for self-care; be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Then, selecting one small, manageable action in that realm and committing to it.

Self-care doesn’t need to be extravagant. It can be as simple as taking a walk around one of our breathtaking National Parks with a loved one. My favourite recent

self-care moment was with my daughter witnessing a delightful show by dolphins and whales in the Noosa National Park. It’s moments like these that rejuvenate our spirit. Alternatively, it could involve dedicating ten minutes each morning to mindfulness exercises, setting aside time to read that non-fiction book you’ve been eyeing, or joining a local yoga class.

Embark on your self-care journey with a small, achievable goal, understanding that every step matters. If self-commitment is a challenge, involve a friend to keep you on track. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it’s an essential practice that builds strength, resilience, and the capacity to support those you cherish.

BETEL LEAVES

THE Betel plant is a species of flowering plant in the pepper family. Its glossy, heart shaped leaves have a mild pepper flavour and are most commonly used throughout Asia as a wrapper for the areca or betel nut (the fruit of a type of palm not related to betel at all), which is chewed as a mild narcotic.

The leaves also make a delicious base for a combination of chopped seafood or meats, garnished with ginger, lime, chilli, peanuts, coconut and a sticky palm sugar syrup. In Thailand and Laos this is a popular snack called ‘miang kham’ meaning ‘one bite wrap’.

They can also be used to make rolls of seasoned raw mince which are then skewered and grilled.

The plant is native to Southeast Asia, so it is very well suited to growing in our Queensland climate, and becomes a beautiful tropical looking hedge which will provide you with a constant supply of leaves all year round.

The best way to get hold of a plant is to know someone who already has one and get a few of the runners from their bush. Otherwise I have seen it for sale in pots at times at Sauers nursery in Cooroy.

The Mary Valley Country Harvest stall at the Saturday Pomona markets often sells packets of the leaves ready to use if you just want to buy some to try them.

I love using the leaves as a base for lots of different combinations of flavours, but the recipe below is one of my favourites. It’s gluten and dairy free and vegan, and the flavours and textures of all the elements hit your tastebuds at different times as the leaf breaks apart in your mouth.

BETEL LEAVES, TEMPEH, PICKLED OYSTER MUSHROOMS, COCONUT YOGHURT, MACADAMIAS AND CHILLI SAMBAL

INGREDIENTS:

24 betel leaves, washed

200gm tempeh, crumbled

2 golden shallots, finely sliced

½ cup snake beans, finely chopped into rounds

50ml peanut oil

30ml soy sauce

100gm oyster mushrooms, shredded

30ml rice vinegar

1 tsp sambal oelek

1 stalk lemongrass, finely chopped

1 golden shallot, peeled and roughly chopped

1 clove garlic

¼ cup coriander stalks, finely chopped

50ml sesame oil

50ml rice vinegar

50gm castor sugar

1tsp salt

100gm coconut yoghurt

50gm macadamias, roasted and chopped coriander leaves to garnish

METHOD:

In a hot pan, quickly fry the crumbled tempeh in a small amount of oil until lightly coloured.

In the same pan, fry the shallots and snake beans in the remaining oil for one minute. Add to the tempeh.

Stir through the soy sauce and set aside.

Fry the oyster mushrooms in small batches in a hot pan until lightly coloured. Season with salt and pepper, transfer to a bowl and mix with the rice vinegar.

Place sambal oelek, lemongrass, shallot, garlic, coriander

stalks and sesame oil in a food processor and blend to a fine paste.

Fry paste in a pan until fragrant. Add rice vinegar, sugar and salt and simmer for 2 minutes.

Lay the leaves shiny side up on a platter.

Place a tablespoon of tempeh mix in the middle of each leaf.

Top with the oyster mushrooms, coconut yoghurt, macadamias and chilli sambal, and garnish with coriander leaves.

It’s time to hear what our community considers important to manage the Shire as a destination for residents and visitors.

To start the conversation, a Discussion Paper has been developed which lays out some key facts, and suggests some ideas and actions as examples of what could be part of a future Destination Management Plan.

We want to hear your thoughts, and what is important to you and how you see Noosa Shire in 2033.

“This is a conversation that many popular destinations around the world are having at the moment,” Director Strategy and Environment Kim Rawlings said.

“It’s about developing a plan that reflects the views of residents, business operators, visitors and those working in the tourism industry, so the Shire is a well-managed community and visitor destination,” she said.

A series of community workshops and coffee catch-up sessions across the Shire during October are soon to be announced.

Residents are encouraged to read the Discussion Paper and provide their thoughts on the topics it contains. The paper and surveys can be accessed at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au.

Consultation ends midnight Sunday 29 October.

Noosa, it’s time to Get Ready for storm and bushfire season

Noosa residents are urged to prepare for the threat of disasters by attending a free community emergency services event to be held in Pomona on October 14.

It’s the storm and bushfire season and now is the time to start preparing your home for severe weather.

Get Ready Week runs from October 9 to 15 and in Noosa, you can join us at the Pomona Markets on Saturday October 14 from 7am to

12pm at Stan Topper Park.

“It’s a real opportunity to chat to Noosa’s emergency services partners,” Council’s Disaster Resilience Officer, Ian Williams, said.

“Whether you’re entering your first summer in Noosa or a long-time

hinterland local, come along and learn how you can prepare your family and pets for severe weather.

“It’s all about preparing earlier, planning better and supporting each other more. That’s what being resilient is all about,” Mr Williams said.

Hard copies of Noosa’s Emergency Action Guide will be available for all residents, but this is also available digitally on Noosa Council’s Disaster Dashboard at disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au

We look forward to seeing you there!

and promotional resources, it’s garage sales made easy over two big weekends - 11-12 November and 18-19 November.

Noosa Council’s Waste Coordinator, Mark Borgert, is thrilled to welcome the initiative to Noosa.

“It is expected that over 400,000 people will participate this year over the two weekends of garage sales nationally, with around 3 million items going up for sale,” Mr Borgert said.

“Last year’s event alone diverted over 3 million kilograms of valuable items away from landfill – that’s the circular economy in action!”

In Brief

Waste Plan consultation a success

The second round of community engagement on Council’s 2023-2023 waste plan is now complete with residents voicing a resounding call for enhanced sustainability and reduced environmental impact, as well as offering up support and other suggestions.

Garage Sale Trail is Australia’s biggest festival of pre-loved stuff, and it’s coming to Noosa.

Noosa Council is joining neighbouring councils, Gympie Regional Council and Sunshine Coast Council along with over 80 other councils across the nation in 2023, to encourage and educate Noosa locals about the

importance of waste reduction and recycling.

Garage Sale Trail is a community powered initiative that encourages more residents to buy and sell second-hand items via garage sales, and aims to connect locals through the love of recycling.

With free registration, how-to guides

A series of Trail Tutorial online workshops will be held on October 28 and 29. They’re free and available to the public, and explore sustainable living that is kind on the planet and pocket. An all-star cast of experts will also share insights on secondhand selling, styling and the circular economy.

To register your sale and find the trail tutorial head to www.garagesaletrail. com.au/noosa

New Standards for food safety

Council is supporting local businesses with roll-out of new requirements

Food businesses that handle unpackaged, potentially hazardous ready-made food, need to be aware of a new Food Safety Standard that comes into effect on December 8, 2023. Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator, Haylee Fox, said Council is always looking to improve food safety practices for the community.

“The purpose of the new standard is to strengthen food safety in these businesses and to help prevent foodborne illness,” Ms Fox said.

The Standard introduces three new food safety management tools, firstly around food safety supervisor training and food handler training. Finally, food businesses will need to actively monitor and manage key food safety

risks. Council has developed a range of templates to assist businesses.

Owner of Paperboy Cafe, Deb Keir, said Council’s support is much appreciated, and for a small local business, receiving Council assistance is integral for success.

“Whenever I’ve had dealings with Council they have responded quickly, and the communication was transparent and very helpful,” Ms Keir said.

“Council is assisting businesses to meet these state government requirements before December by emailing information to business operators and providing targeted education,” Ms Fox said.

For more information, visit noosa.qld. gov.au/food-safety-management-tools.

Many community members have highlighted the importance of recycling programs, waste reduction initiatives, and the need for better access to recycling facilities.

“We greatly appreciate the active participation of our residents in shaping the future of waste management in Noosa,” said Kyrone Dodd, Waste and Environmental Health Manager.

“The input has been invaluable to refining the Waste Plan, and we are committed to crafting a sustainable waste plan that benefits both our environment and our community.”

Lawnville Road Bridge replacement begins

Work on Cooroy’s new Lawnville Road bridge is progressing well. Anticipated for completion later this year, the initiative involves replacing the aged timber bridge with a contemporary two-lane concrete structure.

Engineered for reduced maintenance, the new bridge features updated guard rails and widened dimensions to incorporate safety shoulders. While detours via Cooroy Belli Creek Road are in place, residents’ patience is appreciated throughout the construction phase. The new bridge is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Noosa Council as part of the Bridge Renewal Program.

THE SHIP’S MIDWIFE – PETA MILLAR

A STROLL through a local cemetery on Stradbroke Island saw Sunshine Coast author Peta Millar captivated by a memorial to the passengers of The Emigrant, a ship which made the passage from England to Australia in 1850. During the voyage there was an outbreak of typhus among the passengers, and upon arrival in Australia The Emigrant was forced to quarantine at the Dunwich Station. Inspiration struck and Peta found herself drawn to exploring the experiences of the passengers - what caused them to leave their home countries and head “into the unknown, the unfamiliar and uncomfortable.”

In her beautiful novel The Ship’s Midwife we are introduced to seventeen-year-old Sarah who, after the death of her mother, and faced with few prospects during a time of famine and poverty, boards a ship bound for Brisbane, Australia. Sarah strikes up an instant friendship with her fellow traveller Bridie, and when the two girls find that they both have midwifery skills they start to dream of becoming midwives in the new settlement.

As an outbreak of typhus starts to take hold in the ship, Sarah and Bridie find their nursing skills much in demand and they are stretched to their limits. When the ship finally arrives in Australia, the captain is denied entry to port and instead instructed to sail onto a newly established quarantine station at Stradbroke Island. Just when they think their ordeal is over, the passengers find themselves without food, shelter, or medical aid.

The Ship’s Midwife is a very well researched historical drama with tales of hope, love, adventure, survival and belonging, all inspired by a true story. As an added bonus when Peta isn’t busy researching her next novel, you can find her at Berkelouws in Eumundi – you might even be able to persuade her to sign your copy.

IN NEW PHOTO

GYMPIE photographer Bela Bakonyi provides a snapshot of 40 families in the Mary Valley in his new publication The Book of Imbil and Brooloo.

The book was launched at Art on Yabba fine art gallery in Imbil last Sunday.

It took Bela six months to interview and photograph families in the two Mary Valley villages, building a picture of what makes this small community special.

“The words come from the participants - their stories are told in an unfiltered, honest way,” he said.

“The book is a time capsule reflecting a moment in a fast evolving and changing

environment in the Mary Valley.

“It answers the question about what makes a town what it really is? It’s not just its buildings, its services, the roads … It really is the people who inhabit the town, the village, the city who make it what it is.

Photography is Bela’s way of telling a story and while he shoots weddings, events, news and maternity photos, his main interest is the people involved.

The magic of “Blue Bayou”

FRESH off the back of an 11 town Queensland tour, Blue Bayou tours to the Sunshine Coast this October. This heart-warming concert pays tribute to the great country-pop artists of the 1960s and 70s.

Featuring the award-winning singer and entertainer Nadia Sunde, accompanied by Paul Henderson on guitars and banjo, and Marcus Church on guitar, Blue Bayou is a show that promises down-home warmth, charm, and masterful storytelling.

Nadia and her band will take audiences on an enchanting exploration of the greatest country-pop artists of the 1960s and 70s. Expect to hear timeless classics by icons such as Glen Campbell, Bobby Gentry, Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and many more.

Nadia’s passion for country music runs deep, as she recalls her childhood love for the genre. “Mum bought me the Readers Digest Country & Western songbook when I was a kid because I just couldn’t get enough country from the radio,” she fondly reminisces. “Getting back to that place with our show ‘Blue Bayou’ has felt a bit like a homecoming. It’s beautiful to be bringing these songs to audiences on the Sunshine Coast who feel the same way.”

MATILDA Malone has the first three in abundance, and she knows there is luck out there – she just has to be ready to recognise it, and grasp the opportunity.

The Year 11 Noosa District High School (NDHS) student, 16, first started tinkling on a piano aged two or three, and her mum first realised Matilda had actually picked up a melody shortly thereafter.

By age five or six, she was taking proper piano lessons, but that early experience indicated she would likely ‘play by ear’ as a natural.

“My father is musical; he learned to play piano by ear,” Matilda said.

“And he had an amazing voice. He’s handed them down to me. The first job he had musically was where he played in a bar for five years.

“I grew up doing music with him – it was always a big part of my childhood.”

Clarinet at school, followed by enough guitar learning to support busking at Eumundi Markets (where Dad worked), then violin and drums gave Matilda all-round musical experience.

In primary school, she had already developed a reputation after singing a song from The Little Mermaid, where “my teacher made me perform it on parade in front of the whole school –maybe 400 kids”.

The story continues at high school, where NDHS is pretty switched on when it comes to helping students develop musically, she said.

“Mr Argent our music teacher has been pretty good with scheduling gigs for me – he organized a half-hour set at the Pomona Show – and the drama department [under Louize Lyle] also get whatever they can for me.”

She is also fresh from playing the lead role in the school’s production of the hit musical Annie, and performed at last year’s community Christmas event in Cooroy at the Butter Factory stage.

And when it comes to theatre, she recently composed the soundscape musical score for Little Seed Theatre’s recent performance in the Amphitheatre at Noosa Botanic Gardens – her sixth such collaboration with the group, where she’s also played roles and been a member since 2020.

Musically, Matilda’s dad introduced her to a range of music and artists, mainly 1970s/80s vintage, including Little River Band (“my favourite!”), and Missy Higgins, plus Ella Fitzgerald, Robbie Williams and John Denver, “while my mum introduced me to people like Elton John, Eva Cassidy and Cat Stevens”.

But when it comes to female vocals/songwriting, “we had one Adele album we listened to every day for a year straight”.

Matilda did her first paid gig early this year, at the Nambour Forecourt Live series, arranged by her music mentor, wellknown Coast singer-songwriter Andrea Kirwin.

“And she’s booked me in to play at the Woodford Folk Festival at the end of the year”.

That means getting away from writing sad songs, she said, “and sad songs are easier to write”.

“It’s got to be all original songs in a 45-minute set at Woodford, so I need to write some happier ones – I have tonnes of material, but I don’t think it would suit the mood [there]. I need some jazzier stuff.”

Matilda is also eyeing that grand piano on Cooroy’s Maple Street in the rail wagon at the outdoor pizza location, as every gig will help to fund her need to get $2200 together, to supply the musical equipment she will need for Woodford and ongoing performances … like the planned gap year busking trip around Australia before she studies at NIDA or Brisbane’s Conservatorium.

But she does have a microphone.

“I know they hire people to play there. I’ve got the mic - they’ve got the piano.”

EXPLORING THE MUSIC OF THE EARLY JAZZ GUITARISTS AT NOOSA JAZZ CLUB

WHILE it is tempting to say that the jazz guitar began with Eddie Lang in 1925, the guitar was used in jazz groups from the very beginning.

Most early New Orleans bands had a guitarist, (Buddy Bolden’s band 1895) and in fact, one of the first bands to be considered a bit jazz-oriented was led by guitarist Charlie Galloway in 1889.

The early bands in which guitarists featured were for dances and parties in which quieter and more polite music was desired, rather than brass bands.

So we have matched the beautiful tones of Paul Williams clarinet and sax, with the warmth of Peter Walters Bass and the delicate brush work of Rod Andrew’s drums with Russell Bayne and David Burrows skillful renditions of compositions made famous by the legendary guitarists.

SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL

SUMMER of the Seventeenth Doll is a pioneering Australian play written by Ray Lawler and unanimously considered to be amongst the most historically significant in Australian theatre history, openly and authentically portraying distinctly Australian life and characters.

The play is set in Australia, in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton and it details the events of the summer of 1953, in the lives of seven central characters.

This summer is different from others; it is full of tensions, strains to recreate lost youth and from what is said of previous years, not a fraction of the fun that others have been.

Lawler’s much-loved tale of Queensland cane cutters and Melbourne

barmaids has endured, not through nostalgia, nor because it spawned a new age in Australia writing, but because the characters and their dilemmas are so true, so beautifully observed, so humorous and so poignant.

The stella cast includes – Alison Venning, Glen Miller, Oriana Packman, Tom Middleton, Alex Cox, Margaret Courtney and Tenai Quinn.

Directed by Ian Mackellar.

DIVERSE ARTISTRY TAKES CENTER STAGE AT CBFAC

DIVERSITY was the order of the day during September at The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) with 100 artists from the Noosa Open Studio giving us a preview of their work before the trail begins in October followed by the many talented young high school students in Creative Gen providing us with a glimpse of our art future.

In October you still have a chance to see Creative Gen before we embark on another serve of diversity. Opening October 20 are 4 very different shows. The Noosa District State High School once again presents the skills of our local students. Upstairs we are presenting the Faces of Art Brut exhibition. It is a collection of raw art or art brut, that is art that is outside the academic tradition of fine art – sometimes also called naïve art. The artists in this exhibition create art because of or despite their collective and lived experience of mental illness. Faces of Art Brut is supported with a Noosa Council RADF grant.

Also showing is beautiful exhibition of paintings by Pomona artist Ann White which include a mix of landscapes and

interiors, with each painting enticing the viewer to look past the immediate and wonder what is beyond. The show entitled Mapping the Pathway, include works from in and around Pomona but also further afield and all are from the point of view of a walker or visitor looking along, in or through.

Finally in the large back gallery space, Cheryl McGannon and Kym Barrett break new ground with an exhibition titled EXTENDED which implements the diverse possibilities in the process of using cold wax medium. Cheryl and Kym are local experts in cold wax and their works appear in the international publication COLD WAX MEDIUM: TECHNIQUES, CONCEPTS and CONVERSATIONS by Jerry McLaughlin and Rebecca Crowell. They have independently developed, through curiosity and experimentation, unique extended practices including printmaking, collage, ink and charcoal combined with cold wax medium to produce a range of mixed media works. Exhibitions run from October 20 to November 19. www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au

WHERE NATURE’S PALETTE MEETS THE SOUL’S EXPRESSION

LEE Birch is an abstract, intuitive artist who moved to Cooroy two years ago and is once again participating in Noosa Open Studios. This year exhibiting at Frame Tree, Cooroy.

The serene and almost blissful aqua, green and deep ocean blues of Laguna Bay are often the inspiration for Lee’s vibrant and flowing artwork, as well as the stunning country of the Noosa Hinterland region and the hues of the forest.

Her pieces often resonate with peoples’ hearts and

souls, drawing them in to find something of themselves in the vibration of the colours and movement of the art. Lee believes that colour is healing in and of itself and that each painting carries its own energy.

Previously exhibiting at Cooroy Butter Factory Art Centre, Stevens St Yandina, Pomona Gallery, the Art Hub Cooroy, and Noosa Regional Gallery, Lee also participated in Noosa Open Studios in October 2022 and will be part of this amazing art event in 2023 again at Frame Tree, 20 Maple St Cooroy.

ESTABLISHED in 2009, Little Seed grew out of a dream that director Johanna Wallace had to see a youth theatre company in the Noosa region. Almost fifteen years later that dream has seen thousands of young people find their creative home in classes, on stage and in the midst of a group of like minded creatives. Each year hundreds of primary aged students take part in Little Seed’s highly popular week long holiday programs which culminate in a show for parents and friends.

Meet the 4 artists at our opening night, Friday September 8, 5 - 6.30pm. All welcome.

Meet the 4 artists at our opening night, Friday September 8, 5 - 6.30pm. All welcome.

The week-long Holiday Programs are where many of Little Seed’s older performers got their first start on-stage. Now a decade since the programs began some of the first group of children who participated are auditioning for full time creative arts university placements and others are already studying at the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music in Musical Theatre or undertaking training in full time acting degrees.

Meet the 4 artists at our opening night, Friday September 8, 5 - 6.30pm. All welcome.

Whether a child has a lifelong passion for theatre or just wants to do something creative during their school holidays, the program offers budding performers the chance to start their creative journey. Little Seed’s Holiday Programs frequently sell out within days of opening for registration. In response to this the Little Seed team are now offering double the number of programs for the Summer Holidays. They love to welcome both returning Holiday Programmers and new students, many of whom will have their first stage experience as they work to learn, rehearse, costume and perform to a crowd of happy friends and parents; all in just one week.

If you have a child who loves to act, dance or sing then we’d love to see them in either a weekly class or at our Summer Holiday Programs. Registration for our Summer Programs open on Friday October 6, check out full details at www.little-seed.com.au

PEAR SHAPES AND ESSENCES

BELLE Arnold says you can’t be serious all the time. Sometimes you just have to play.

Pear Shapes and Other Things is about Belle playing with materials, shapes and colours. Like life’s experiences, some things are completely new, some are continuations of things already started and others are reworkings of things you thought you’d finished with. The exhibition opens at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery in the Carriage Room on Saturday October 7 and runs to November 1.

In the gallery’s Banana Shed, Trish Menzies is presenting Essence of

Landscapes, a show born of her love and respect for all the environments around us and from a career in landscape architecture over three decades. The show reflects her fascination with all elements of landscape – botanical details, all-natural settings, and the charm of historic buildings.

“The more I look at landscapes around us, the more colour and play of light shades I see,” says Trish. The show runs to October 26. Pomona Railway Station Gallery is at 10 Station Street Pomona, open 10am4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday.

Great Noosa Trail Walk 2023

THE Great Noosa Trail walk was held over the weekend and I was so happy to be a part of this event, volunteering for the first time. Trail Guide Leader Shaun Walsh(Black Mountain) along with long term volunteers Jann Bonsall(Kin Kin), Graig Eldridge(Noosaville), Sarah Chalkley(Peregian Beach)and, Laurie Deacon(Mt Gravatt) shared a wealth of information from the historical aspects to the surrounding landscape. There are many more volunteers ranging in ages from 18 to 75.

The trail walk has been running for 11 years starting in 2012. The hike has become very popular and sells out quickly. The event is capped creating a wonderful community atmosphere, we honestly felt like one big happy family. This year we had 220 registered walkers for the three-day hike and 32 for the one day.

Gathering at the Cooroy Butter Factory at 6.30am we travelled by bus to the start at Lake Macdonald. This three-day trail hike takes you through the spectacular country side of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona. There is no rush as you take in the tropical rainforests, travelling though farmlands, with mountain and ocean views to die for.

There are some challenges along the way with hills that never seem to end. The shuttle bus transfers your gear for a more

relaxing experience and happily collects any weary hikers.

Day one, Cooroy to Kin Kin a 26km hike and everyone is full of excitement and enthusiasm. The hikers soon spread out as they enjoy this beautiful part of the world. The little pop-up tea house along the way with treats and refreshments was a great spot to rest for a break. Once you reach Kin Kin everyone sets up camp at the showgrounds or heads to their pre-booked accommodation. We made ourselves at home at the Kin Kin School of Arts Hall, thanks to Kin Kin Community group who put on a buffet dinner - what a great way to show off the local charm. Other hikers chose to self-cater at the campsite.

Day two it’s up and at it. Sunday morning heading from Kin Kin to beautiful Cooran, 26km. This part of the trail is probably the toughest with those never-ending hills but you have a great sense of achievement when you reach Cooran. The beer goes down well from the Noosa Hinterland Brewery Co., not forgetting the restaurant and coffee shops. The Cooran Cutters Country Kitchen provided dinner and had the footy on for us to relax and enjoy.

Day Three started at one of the local coffee shops, as we headed off on the last leg of our journey. Cooran to Pomona is a recently upgraded part of the trail which is a very easy 10km walk. Such a lovely way

to end the weekend. This part of the trail is quite busy, so you get to meet plenty of locals. I looked for recently spotted koalas but unfortunately didn’t see any. We all celebrated our 62km accomplishment at the Pomona Distillery sharing all the highs and lows and a few blisters before saying goodbye to new friends.

Looking forward to next year!

For more information on this event go to greatnoosatrailwalk.com

If you plan to go any other day, all the trails are subject to weather conditions so please check out The Noosa Trail Network before you plan your hike as some trails may be closed.

And as always my friends, Happy Hiking

Talkin’ bout the rEVolution: Part 1

of government financial incentives for EV purchasers. Norway, by contrast, exempts EVs from vehicle taxes, parking fees and toll charges ... and provides large carparks full of free charging stations. Most breathtaking is the imposition - on every non-electric sale - of a vehicle tax almost equivalent to the purchase price!

Still, the local picture is not all doom and gloom. Australia’s 2022 uptake of 4% actually signals exponential progress since the 2% in 2021. If this exponential momentum can be sustained, Australia could become ‘the Norway of the Antipodes’.

STAY STORM-AWARE WITH NOOSA ALERT THIS SUMMER

HERE’S an astounding statistic; EV sales in Australia increased by 385% in 2022! Surely that must put us at the top of the global EV ranking.

Sadly, statistics can be tricky. Australia’s rocketing increase came from a lowly base. In 2022 Australians bought 33,410 EVs, but over one million petrol and diesel passenger cars. Our EVs were only 4% of all purchases.

Meanwhile, Norway remains the world leader, with over 153,000 EVs purchased in 2022 – 88% of total sales. All other advanced economies are streets ahead of Australiaeven neighbourly New Zealand at 27%.

So, how did Australia end up at the back of the pack in the race to electrify its cars?

One key reason is that Australia and Russia are the only two advanced nations not to adopt a fuel efficiency standard (EFS). In simple terms, the EFS means that all the cars imported by a particular maker must meet a certain average level of fuel efficiency, measured as CO2 emissions per kilometre. Because Australia has no standard, car makers are free to import shiploads of ‘gas guzzlers’.

Other factors that put us at the back of the pack include the lack of EV charging infrastructure in Australia and the lack

Exploring the Obi Obi

SPRING has sprung and its warm enough for ‘creekin’ again. One of the creeks I love to explore is the ObiObi. There are a few different options for exploring this beautiful creek. Kondalilla falls walk is a good option, continuing on down the creek from the bottom of the falls then return the same way. Although not technically the Obi Obi, as it’s a feed into the Obi Obi, it is a spectacular creek line.

Another option and one of my favourites, though a lot more committing, is to start up near the Lake Baroon dam wall, making your way down stream until the creek meets the Sunshine Coast Great Walk trail on the right then returning to the start via this trail and its lookout.

We’ve done this with small kids a couple of times and its took us about five hours, without kids a couple of hours. There are a couple of reasonable length deep water swims that will stretch a poor swimmer like me. I use a double layered water proof bag inside my backpack to keep our gear dry and this has the added benefit of a little extra flotation. We always put kids in life jackets.

The water can be a little chilly so having a dry polypropylene t-shirt in your pack is a good idea if you get cold. These are also especially important for small kids as they

lose body heat much faster than adults

There are no trails in the creek so you will need to keep track of where you are to help you find where to exit onto the great walk trail. This trail runs right next to the creek at one point but it is easy to miss.

As with most creek lines its pretty slow going, especially in the slippery wet sections so lots of care needed. Some highlights are a spectacular gorge section surrounded by towering cliffs, two deep 50-100m swims (depending on water level) and lots of small water falls.

I would not suggest this one in the wet as its extremely slippery and very slow going when its raining. Always check water levels and dam levels, this creek would be deadly if the dam overflowed. As with any adventure into the wilderness be prepared for the unexpected. My kit always includes first aid kit, warm clothes, snacks, water, phone and a torch.

Please only leave footprints and only take photos, the increased amount of graffiti I am seeing in our wilderness is extremely concerning.

Till next time, safe adventuring.

Epic Grand Final Win!

ON Friday night September 15 Cooroora United Football Club’s ‘Raine & Horne Hinterland’ sponsored Div 3 Men’s team travelled to Maroochydore Football fields to take on Gympie in the Grand Final. After already wrapping up the season premiership, in a tight season tally, both the young and the old were full of confidence.

Throughout the regular season the team played 18 matches for 14 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. In the semi final Cooroora beat fourth placed Baringa in a way too close 4-2 extra time victory.

It’s all good and well being confident going into a match, however, you still need to get the job done once the whistle blows. Cooroora was the first team to score with young Dane Cardew getting one past the Gympie Keeper 20 minutes into the match.

The rest of the first half was a series of attacks and counter attacks by both teams, with neither team able to break down the opposition. The second half got under way with Gympie still trailing Cooroora 1-0. However, something was different with the way Gympie came back out, they had switched up their attack, and it appeared to rattle Cooroora. Within 15 minutes of the second half beginning, Gympie had broken down the Cooroora defenses and had 2 shots on target, both being saved by a scrambling goal keeper.

The persistence of the Gympie team

eventually paid off when they evened up the ledger 1 all, around 20 minutes into the second half. This is the way the scores would remain until full time. With a brief 2 minutes break to discuss tactics the teams were sent back out to see if an extra 30 minutes, 15 minutes each way, would provide us with a 2023 champion. Nope, scores remained 1-1 at the end of extra time. Every football fan knows that this brings us to the much anticipated penalty shootout to provide a winner. With the recent success of the Matildas in the World Cup, and the

now famous penalty shoot out between the Aussies and the French, the now growing crowd tensions were high. Jared Austin took the first penalty and slotted it low and to the keepers left, giving much confidence to the Cooroora men.

As the first penalty taker for Gympie stepped up to prepare for his shot the Cooroora keeper, Nathan Harris, tried everything hew knew to psych him out… it worked, the ball sailed over the cross bar giving Cooroora a 1-0 lead in the shootout. This 1-0 head start proved to be all that

was needed with the next 4 Cooroora men, Hudson Mienert, Gilles Riou, Stuart Chapman and Robert Albornoz all taking perfect penalty shots to give Cooroora a 5-4 penalty shootout victory.

Cooroora United Football Club would like to thank all of our 2023 club sponsors including Raine & Horne Hinterland, Cooroy RSL, Cooroy Rag, Gelignite Jacks, Your Local Lifestyle, Sunny Coast Accountants, Cooroy Service Centre, Chapmans Autos, Joe’s Waterhole, Sunshine Coast Truck Alignment, Wright Cut Meats, Cooroy Outdoor Power and SPM Law.

SANDY BOLTON State Member for Noosa

FIRSTLY, thank you to all who joined us in doing ‘midnight hour’ submissions - including Noosa Council and Federal MP Llew O’Brien - to the Federal Government regarding the Kin Kin Quarry’s application to clear an expanded area, which would see the destruction of nearly 10 hectares of critical koala habitat. With no notification of this application and it now closed, your views are important and should be directed to the Federal Minister for Environment

Tanya Plibersek via Minister.Plibersek@ dcceew.gov.au and copy us in via noosa@ parliament.qld.gov.au. In preparation, should efforts fail and it is referred to state government, I asked QLD Minister for Environment Linard in a ‘Question

Without Notice’ about what assistance State can provide. The response included that the proposed vegetation clearing is not currently authorised under their Environmental Authority.

A copy of the full Question and Answer is available at www.SandyBolton.com/ Parliament/Questions.

Still on Kin Kin, it was appreciated that Llew visited with residents to see the impacts of the quarry, as we need the efforts of all representatives from every level of government whilst we await the outcome from Noosa Council’s court case from June last year.

It was an honour to be asked to Chair

a Select Committee on Youth Crime to address one of the most complex issues impacting Queenslanders. The importance of obtaining bipartisan agreements and recommendations is key, and I look forward to working with members from both sides of the Chamber, the advocates and victims on the to-beformed Advisory Panel and the Victims Commissioner, to arrive at a united stance and agreed actions both immediate and longer term that keep communities safer, whilst reviewing the many contributors to criminal behaviours. This is a good step forward in line with the requests from the Voices of Victims, and I thank government for facilitating the first independently chaired committee in QLD for two decades.

With so much to share and not much space, please stay ’in the loop’ via Noosa 360 with updates on a range of important issues we are working on. In addition, follow ‘Sandy Bolton MP’ on Facebook to receive information as soon as available, and subscribe to our e-newsletter at www. SandyBolton.com/Newsletters which also ensures you are advised when Noosa specific surveys are held. Always, if you have any questions or require assistance regarding State-related matters, do not hesitate to contact my office on 5319 3100. Until next month, Sandy x

NOOSA Council strongly welcomes a speed reduction to 40km/h on a section of Teewah Beach. The new speed limit will be in place for the September school holidays. This reduction in speed follows extensive consultation with residents and significant lobbying by Noosa Council to Queensland Police and Transport officials who have supported Council’s call for the speed to be reduced. The reduced speed limit is for the beach area adjacent to Teewah residential village and extends for about 1.5 kilometres along the beach. More equipment and proactive mitigation measures are ensuring Noosa is well prepared for the coming bushfire season. Council

has bolstered its fire mitigation capabilities with two fit-for-purpose Landcruisers taking fleet numbers to five light attack vehicles. Similarly, Council now has 16 staff nationally accredited in fire management. These staff are available to support Queensland Fire and Emergency Service in the event of a wildfire burning on Council managed land or directly threatening Council land. This year, with the support of our dedicated in-house fire management officer, we have undertaken four burns on Council owned Bushland Reserves in Cooroibah, Pomona, Ringtail Creek and Weyba Downs and assisted Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services with two burns along the Noosa Trail Network. The extra work is encouraging for residents given the threats of

HOUSING AUSTRALIA FUTURE FUND

We can’t fix a decade of little action from the former Liberal-National government overnight, but the Housing Australia Future Fund is a great start, delivering 30,000 new social and affordable rental homes for the most vulnerable in our society.

This will mean more homes for essential workers, more affordable homes for renters, and more homes for those most in need, like women and children fleeing domestic violence and Indigenous housing.

The passage of this legislation, along with the commitments made at last month’s National Cabinet, represent the most significant reforms to housing in a generation.

It’s just another way we’re working to address Australia’s housing challenges.

2023 REFERENDUM

As we draw closer to the Referendum, it’s important to ensure you and your family are properly informed on how to vote.

Unfortunately, we’ve been seeing more and more examples of misinformation about not just the proposed Voice to Parliament, but even the Referendum process itself.

The AEC is the best and most trustworthy source for official information relating to the Referendum. Visit their website at www.aec.gov.au/referendums

In great news for our community, we’ve officially opened the $1.95 million Olive Donaldson Pavilion at Noosa District Sports Complex at Tewantin. It includes four change rooms, a kitchen, six unisex toilets, storage space, first aid and umpire rooms and a large multi-purpose area. The multi-purpose area accommodates two undercover pickleball courts. Several sports clubs currently based at the complex including Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club, Noosa District Netball Association and Noosa Beach Classic Car Club will benefit. It will also welcome new sports such as pickleball to the site.

Finally, we’re seeking your feedback on

a discussion paper about the way Noosa is managed as a destination. The conversation starter will help to shape a Destination Management Plan for Noosa. A Destination Management Plan is a blueprint for protecting a community’s key values, while guiding the evolution of a tourism industry. It considers the interests of all stakeholders. There are residents and families who depend on tourism for their livelihoods, but the visitor economy and Shire need to be managed in a way that respects the qualities that have made Noosa such a sought-after place to live, visit and invest in. It’s your town and it’s your voice and we want to hear from you. The discussion paper and survey can be downloaded at: yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au

REIQ AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

HINTERNOOSA is honoured to be named as State finalists in four categories for this year’s REIQ Awards for Excellence.

The new-look Hinternoosa formed earlier this year when Sirah and John Robb’s competing agencies, Wythes Real Estate and Hinternoosa, merged to form a united super team of the best real estate professionals in the region. This has seen their results, client experience and team experience go from strength to strength. Ranked as the hinterland’s top selling and renting agency and taking a wholistic approach to their service, incorporating innovation, community contribution, ongoing professional development and strong leadership, it is no surprise this team have been recognised as finalists in the Medium Residential Agency of the Year and Contribution to the Community Award categories.

Alisa Wythes has been named as an individual finalist in the Residential Salesperson of the Year category. Born and bred in Cooroy, Alisa has consistently been a top performer in the hinterland market. This year in particular, multiple record breaking sales and an ongoing commitment to going above and beyond for her clients has shone through. Rebecca Ali-Mumtaz has been named as a finalist for Agency Support Person of the Year. With a diverse administration skillset that spans from agent support to marketing, Rebecca was nominated for her integral role in the Hinternoosa

rebrand and merge this year. Her production of the Noosa Country Style magazine and dedication to the success of the team and business also supports her finalist announcement.

Set for 28th October at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, the REIQ Awards for Excellence gala is the most anticipated event in Queensland’s real estate scene, offering REIQ members a unique opportunity to come together and salute the industry’s best. No strangers to achievements at this level, Sirah and John Robb lead the Wythes team to winning REIQ awards for Innovation in 2019 and Community Contribution in 2020.

Sirah Robb, now Director and Principal of Hinternoosa, commented on the current announcement, “Being named as finalists in four categories is well-deserved recognition for the incredible work our team is doing for our clients, our community and each other every day. Bringing competitors together to form an agency even greater than the sum of its individuals was always going to be a bold move. To see our vision play out so well and for the work every single team member put into making it successful being rewarded with these finalist announcements is just the icing on the cake. I love that the exceptional calibre of real estate professionals we have here in the hinterland are among the best in the entire State and can’t wait to celebrate with our team of superstars”.

SET in a prestigious Doonan enclave, this captivating property affords new owners an enviable Noosa hinterland lifestyle. A private, tree-lined drive leads up to the residence. The circa 1920 Queenslander was transported to the site from Brisbane. It exudes all the grace and charm of a bygone era, with stunning original features including VJ panels, casement windows, leadlight features, gleaming timber floors, and a covered verandah overlooking the tranquil gardens.

The freshly painted interior has a light, spacious ambience thanks to 3.1-metrehigh ceilings – some with ornate plasterwork. At its heart is an openplan living space featuring a spotless modern kitchen with gas cooktop. The versatile floor plan also presents possibilities for dual living, with an additional kitchenette/wet bar in the separate family room, and a dedicated study/home office. All four bedrooms are a good size, and the master boasts an ensuite.

Adjacent to the home is a 15 x 10 metre shed with 4 roller doors and thru-way access. With a plumbed slab, power and insulation, it can accommodate up to 10 cars. A carport is attached to the shed with a further carport attached to the main residence.

Additional infrastructure includes 6.5 kw of solar panels and 10,000 gallons of rainwater storage.

Breathtaking grounds complete the picturesque scene. With almost four acres, there’s ample room for a horse, plus potential to add a pool or even another dwelling (STCA).

While wonderfully private and peaceful, this gorgeous property is less than five minutes’ drive from historic Eumundi village, with its schools, cafes, country pubs and world-famous markets. Noosa’s iconic beaches, shopping, dining and National Park are approximately 15 minutes from your doorstep.
