CHRISTMAS in July will again be held at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall on Saturday July 29. The night will feature a fabulous three-course festive menu prepared by the talented chef, Peter Wolfe. There will be entertainment by the talented Andrea Kirwin and Claire Evelynn.

The fundraiser event sponsored by the Eumundi & District Historical Association (EHA) and the Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) will raise funds on the night through a raffle and bar sales. This year the fundraising dinner will support Rural Aid’s ‘Buy a Bale for a Farmer’.

Tickets up to July 15 will be $79 per person and will include a three course meal, entertainment, complimentary drink on arrival and a lucky door ticket. Tickets are limited and we welcome group bookings. Tickets can be purchased through Trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/CIFFZ

Barrie Adams, Deputy Chairman of the Rural Aid Board, explains that there are numerous aid project that are developed by Rural Aid which includes ‘Buy a Bale’ along with other campaigns that look at a holistic approach which not only cares for financial hardship, feeding or replacing livestock, but also programs that assist with mental health and family support.

EHA President, Donata Page commented that she hoped that the broader community would come and kick up their heels and celebrate this fabulous annual fundraising event. The event will be held in the Eumundi School of Arts - which has been lovingly restored over the past ten years - which not only boasts a fabulous stage but also an equally fabulous dance floor.

EUMUNDI’S NEW LOOK

EUMUNDI’S main street, Memorial Drive, is set to receive a beautiful new streetscape that its community has been helping shape with Sunshine Coast Council.

The community-led vision will uniquely reflect the character of the township with more tranquil outdoor seating experiences, leafy shade areas, safer pedestrian crossings, and art and heritage interpretation keeping history alive.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 Councillor David Law said “Passionate community groups,

including Save the Memorial Drive Campaign, businesses and key stakeholders joined Council to deliver a shared outcome.”

The group wanted to ensure Eumundi’s important heritage places are protected and brought to life by being ‘built in’ to the infrastructure through interpretation and signage. Following the workshop, detailed design will be completed and construction of the Eumundi streetscape upgrade will commence late 2023.

YARN BOMBS @ EUMUNDI MARKETS

New Owners ... Japanese Cuisine

CELEBRATING three years of Pomona Village Kitchen, the beloved restaurant is now under new ownership. Current chef Saya and her husband Hwani are taking the reins and bringing their expertise in Japanese cuisine to the Hinterland. Both great chefs, they have committed to preserving the essence of Pomona Village Kitchen while introducing their own culinary delights.

THE Original Eumundi Markets was wrapped in love and yarn as the Patches of Cooroy Community Group enveloped part of the premises in colorful yarn.

Dedicated members of the group hand crafted beautiful crochet patterns, adorning the two poles at the front of the pink office building to serve as a beautiful art installation.

The Patches of Cooroy Community Group is a close-knit community of quilting and craft enthusiasts who gather to share in the joy of their hobbies. Embracing newcomers warmly, the group welcomes those interested in joining their creative endeavours. To connect you can find them on Facebook @patchesofcooroy.

Zenita reflecting on her journey said, “It’s been a great ride, full of challenges. Being hospitality business owners these days requires you to be available 24/7. Building the business was hard but 100% worth it. So proud to have shown our daughter that you can build something so rewarding and successful if you have the mind set and you are willing to work hard and persevere.”

Zenita noted that her daughter’s understanding and support, even at a young age, has been invaluable. Plus the unwavering support from the community and friends has played a crucial role in their achievements.

Saya and Hwani’s daughters, Gina and Enna, have also spent countless hours at PVK during school holidays and weekends, enjoying their time while Saya worked diligently.

Pomona Village Kitchen has become an integral part of the local community over the past three years. Despite opening just before the first lockdowns, they adapted

and made necessary changes along the way. Their commitment to delivering “simple food done well” and providing service with a smile will remain unchanged, as their dedicated team will continue at PVK.

Though taking a break, Zenita says they will still be involved, occasionally lending a hand and grabbing morning coffees during the school run.

Excitingly, Hwani and Saya are introducing Japanese nights to the Hinterland starting June 7. Their aim is to offer evening dining from Wednesday to

Saturday, creating additional employment opportunities for the local community. They will continue to support local suppliers and maintain their membership in the slow food movement.

As she eagerly anticipates dining out, Zenita extends her heartfelt gratitude, “Thank you again to all our staff and every one of you in our community for supporting us along the way and continuing to do so.”

Pop in and say hi! Pomona Village Kitchen, 2 Memorial Avenue, Pomona. 5403 8592.

Family violence survivors receive $500k lifeline

YOUR local Community Banks have stepped in to fill an urgently needed gap in housing for women and children escaping domestic and family violence (DFV).

DFV is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children in Australia with Queensland Police responding to an average of 400 cases of DFV every day. This shocking statistic highlights the critical need to provide a housing first approach to help families recover from the upheaval caused by DFV.

To help address this critical issue, Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) who operate Community Banks Cooroy, TewantinNoosa & Marcoola, have donated a generous grant of $500,000 to Coast2Bay Housing’s Noosa RISE Project. The project aims to provide DFV

survivors safe and secure housing for up to 12 months, as well as support services for transitioning back into society and restarting their lives.

“The $500,000 goes towards purchasing the land within the Noosa region as a development site to construct urgently needed emergency accommodation for families. $500,000 is the largest contribution our Community Banks have ever made to one project. We know Noosa RISE will be a game changer for vulnerable women and children in our community and it’s fantastic that we can announce the commencement of this project during DFV Awareness month,” Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Chair, Trish Radge said.

“The customers of our Community Bank can be incredibly proud that their

banking has made this possible. Simply by banking with us our customers are helping women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Someone you know, whether you realise it or not, is affected by DFV. 40% of our local policing is spent dealing with DFV issues and currently there is no safe place for our vulnerable families to go once they leave crisis accommodation. The directors of our Community Bank wanted to make a significant difference, to provide a legacy that will benefit women and children for decades to come.

“We are proud to partner with Coast2Bay Housing, who have the skills and connections to make Noosa RISE DFV housing possible. As a Community Bank we can’t directly change behaviours around DFV, but we can provide funding to get Noosa RISE off the ground. This is a

call out to all women and children in our community affected by DFV that we are here for you, to support you in any way we can,” she said.

Coast2Bay Housing Group CEO, Andrew Elvin said, “Coast2Bay Housing Group has supported local families in need of safe, secure housing for more than 30 years and we are acutely aware of the huge and growing need for purpose-built accommodation for women and children impacted by domestic and family violence in our community.”

Bendigo’s Community Banks are committed to giving back to the community they serve, and its recent efforts have been extraordinary. To date over $2.9 million has been poured back into the local community by the Community Bank Marcoola, Cooroy and Tewantin-Noosa network alone.

Hinterland Craft Beer Festival returns

YES, it’s on again! Put Saturday June 24 in your diary for the Hinterland Craft Beer Festival returning for 2023, with the frothy festivities taking place at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi from 12noon til 8pm. This boutique fun-filled FREE ENTRY festival is celebrating its fifth year, bringing together the best of local breweries, live music grooves, food trucks and Eumundi good vibes. The line-up of breweries for 2023 sees a return of festival favourites, with Heads of Noosa Brewing Co, Copperhead Brewery, Boiling Pot Brewing Co, Moffat Beach Brewing Co, Sunshine Brewery, Your Mates Brewing Co, Noosa Hinterland Brewing Co, Matso’s Brewery, Terella Brewing and resident hosts Eumundi Brewery bringing their beer-y best.

Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery Manager Mike Brockley says lovers of local craft brews will have their thirst well and truly quenched.

“There’ll be a whopping 80 beers for tasting at the festival, with the respective breweries bringing their popular core brews, new seasonals as well as some experimental small-batch brews being crafted specially for the festival,” said Mike

“The toughest task for beer lovers will be deciding which ones to sample – with a range of ales, lagers, sours, porters, stouts, IPA’s and ginger beers to choose from,” he said.

For those who aren’t fully committed to beer, there’ll be a pop-up Gin Bar serving up Eumundi Distillers’ Folktale gins.

To accompany the brews and bevies,

there will be a fine selection of tasty street food to tuck into.

On the entertainment front, there’ll be non-stop live music and grooves throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Roving performers will have guests laughing, and there’ll be a raft of old skool pub games to play on the day.

If you love making beer, learning about beer, talking beer, and, of course, tasting beer, then you most certainly ought to save the date for what is sure to be your kind of afternoon.

Everyone has a story

ON the success of last year’s exhibition, gallery owner and director Gabby Sutherland, has secured a grant to bolster the program. Partly funded by Noosa Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), artistic mentors have been attracted to push this year’s participating artists to the next level.

“We wanted the artists to grow from 2022’s NAIDOC exhibition, to know the process and procedural aspects of dealing with galleries,” says Gabby. The mentoring process has been undertaken by modern First Nation artist Jandamarra Cadd and multi-disciplinary artist Cholena Hughes. Together they have identified improvements and designed an exciting program, balancing gallery expectations and ‘mobs way’.

Over twenty local artists from a range of diverse disciplines, some of them well known and highly experienced, others exhibiting for the first time, will participate in the program which includes opening celebrations, acknowledgment of Elders, professional workshops and a closing market stall featuring authentic First Nations products. Part of the public program will include a discussion led by First Nations panelists and will discuss the question, What is Aboriginal Art?

Sonder, the studio and gallery space created by Gabby, exists to support underrepresented artists. “As we shift into a more technologically complex world, there’s a

risk that artists of any calibre, from any background, will be left behind if the professional procedural expectations of galleries are not met,”Gabby says.

Gabby believes that everyone has a story. She is an artist, activist and human rights defender and as the Founding Director of Sonder is pooling her life experience and considerable investment, into creating a safe space for artists to connect and flourish.

“Sonder means, ‘Everyone has a story’ and people from under-represented groups often have a big story, a fascinating story, a story of fighting demons, of love, courage, of championing, of camaraderie. However, often absent, is a professional space giving them a voice, a platform or an audience to share their story.” She explains that when people discover what Sonder means, there is an immediate change in their demeanour. “They are in a safe space, mixing with other like-minded, kind people, giving authenticity to Sonder’s vision of assisting people to feel valued and their story is important. Everything else then falls into place.”

As a certified social enterprise, 51% of profits are allocated to positive community contribution which means consideration is always given to the positive impact Sonder’s activities have on building better

communities. “I have found the artists are looking for something, that there is something missing. The artists that come into the gallery have all commented on how safe they feel, how they feel like they belong, there are no pretenses. The community in so many other areas are really embracing social enterprises because they do contribute to giving back, but I think art is lagging behind a little bit. I am trying to get people to understand that when they are buying (art) from a gallery like Sonder, they are buying directly and giving back to the community in a massive way. First Nations people receive 100 percent of the profit in an effort to combat exploitation.”

Gabby has encouraged individual ambassadors, rather than a board of directors, to help her manage the business of the gallery. Each ambassador is the representative of a minority group including women, First Nations and Indigenous people, LGBTQIA, people with a disability, youth refugee and migrant people. Working together the team is able to identify and engage with underrepresented artists locally and globally. Ambassador and mentor Cholena Hughes says, “Gabby offers encouragement to bring the artists in, she attracts them and

Gabby’s creative teaching side whilst at Sunshine Beach High School

then provides opportunities for emerging artists. She has been such a pleasure to work with. She’s incredibly supportive, humble and very generous with her space and her time.”

Growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney in the late 1970’s had an enormous impact on shaping Gabby’s values and contributed to her awareness of social injustice. “I always had a fondness for the underdog or the child at risk.” She eventually graduated with a BA then went on to complete a Diploma of Education as a sole parent, raising three children. Education was something she had to fight hard for.

“Being a child in the western suburbs, especially around that time, further education was never mentioned. Girls were meant to do admin or if you were really smart, nursing. As far as ambition and school, I was the first girl in our school to be allowed to do woodwork and metal work in year 11 and I didn’t finish year 12. I had to go back to TAFE later on just because there wasn’t that expectation. My first job out of school I was a roof tiler, I rode a motor bike and I did what I wanted to do. I didn’t do what society told me I had to do as a girl.”

She spent her career variously teaching in South Australia and then in nongovernment roles in youth work and disabilities in NSW, becoming the CEO of a non-profit group and working in the child protection sector. With a move to Queensland she took contracts at Sunshine Beach High School and taught art, design and technology on and off for ten

years.

SONDER STUDIO AND GALLERY, BASED IN COOROY, WILL STIMULATE THE LOCAL ART SCENE THIS MONTH WITH NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS SPANNING INTO A MONTH LONG INTERACTIVE AND CREATIVE PROGRAM OF EVENTS

When she saw a position come up with the Australian aid agency, Save the Children, who had won a contract to provide humanitarian support for refugees in detention, she applied and was contracted to the offshore Australian detention facility on the island of Nauru for thirteen months. Gabby says, “It doesn’t sound like a long time but it is kind of the equivalent to 20 years! For the next nine years that was my focus (Nauru). I did casual teaching again but I don’t think I was capable of teaching mainstream because the refugee children were so grateful, appreciative and respectful. It was hard to come back to a life of privilege. I wasn’t prepared to be a permanent teacher until I could resolve that, but I never did resolve it.”

Gabby was instrumental in the Kids off Nauru campaign and became a speaker for refugees in detention. She gave evidence at a Senate enquiry into the abuse and neglect of asylum seekers on Nauru. “When I think about how I was able to become an activist, when you grow up in a place and you are so scared about the dangers that are around you, you become scared of nothing. I saw things that were so wrong. You can’t walk away from child abuse and I just think my background gave me the strength to be a fighter. By the time you have defended yourself that many times, you are really not scared of anyone or anything so it enabled me to say no, this is wrong. I am going to do this and whatever the consequences are I am going to cope with it.”

Gabby’s own art has been previously

informed by what she witnessed on Nauru, in paintings. These days she is revelling in glass bead making. “It’s the first time in my life where I have been able to completely switch off my brain and have nothing in there but complete focus. With the glass it is so therapeutic to just switch off. It is something that helps me relax.”

The idea for Sonder came to Gabby from witnessing the trauma and isolation of refugees, who each had a story but no way of being heard or seen. To tell their stories, they had to build trust and a relationship, whilst finding the strength and courage to communicate. “A lot of the people who wanted to tell their stories, who were the fighters, who wanted to make a difference and help others were usually women and creatives.”

Inspired by those stories, Sonder exists so that others can find a way to an audience to tell their unique story. “We speak about Sonder like it is a person, a person that is really kind and gentle. We talk about it really affectionately, everyone that is really involved in the gallery. It has wisdom and kindness and all of the things that allow people to feel that sense of belonging and it has taken on it’s own identity really.”

And now Gabby, along with her team of artistic ambassadors, are bringing those stories to us. Cholena Hughes’ artwork, Tribal Connections, will feature on the Sonder event posters and the launch of a First Nations clothing line. “Tribal Connections is from a body of work I created while at Uni which explored the

concept of connection; connection to place, connection to people and connection to our environment.”

Cholena adds, “Along with Jandamarra and support from Gabby, we are offering guidance to the artists who need it, assistance to write their artist statements, authenticity certificates, invoices and support with uploading to the Sonder website. We’ll assist them in preparing their work, taking quality photographs and anything else they may like help with. We’re very proud to include artists who are new to this experience along with those who are experienced and well known. They’re of various disciplines like painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation,

jewellery making, photography and weaving. It will be deadly!”

Jandamarra agrees, “What I am most looking forward to is bringing to light the beautiful creative expression that our rich community has, especially our emerging artists. To feel the light in their being at exhibiting for the first time! We have a children’s entry this year so I am excited to see how this greatly compliments the exhibition.”

Sonder Studio and Gallery NAIDOC week event celebrations kick off with the opening on Saturday July 1, 1-6pm. The exhibition runs from July 2 to 30 at Sonder Studio Gallery, Unit 20, 5 Taylor Court, Cooroy. www.sondergallery.com

A Rich HistoryCommemorating Our Heritage

DESCENDED from pioneering families and spending most of their lives in the local area, there is no wonder that Ron and Betty Sutton have a wealth of local knowledge and a rich interest in our history. And they’ve put that interest into action by producing a book, Commemorating Our Heritage which documents 100 years of Cooroy RSL history.

Born in Cooroy, Betty grew up on a property in Eumundi which had been the main camp for the workers who built the railway in the 1890s. It was here that her interest in history was fuelled as she was fascinated by all sorts of old artifacts that the plow would dig up in the fields. Ron grew up in Belli Park and worked in the timber industry including at the Nandroya Mill. At the age of 18 he commenced National Service for 5 years in Cooroy from 1952, proudly earning Sergeant’s stripes. Ron has lived a good part of the Cooroy RSL history, having joined the Sub-branch in 1974 and at various times filling the positions of President and Treasurer for both the sub-branch and the club. Whilst Club Treasurer, Ron was involved in the planning of the new building which was opened in October 1979.

With 67 years together, it is no surprise that Ron and Betty made such a great team in producing the book, the third for Betty who has two previous publications on the history of the area, Pioneer Families of Cooroy and Echoes of the Past, Cooroy & District Families.

“The sub-branch was celebrating its anniversary and I realised they had the wrong date and actually even the wrong year and that started more research about the sub-branch and club’s history,” recalled Betty.

In fact, it was many years of research which unearthed all sorts of interesting information. Ron recalls days spent on microfiche readers scanning for local news.

“We’d sit for hours on the machines putting in another coin at the State Library and the Queensland Archives. There were numerous visits down there, as well as gathering information from Nambour and Cooroy Genies; reading through old minute books from as far back as 1938; and finding photos in the collections of local people.”

The result is a book full of interesting information and stories, depicting not just the RSL history but the times of early Cooroy, the effects on the fledgling community through the turmoil of the

Great War and other conflicts as well as interesting snippets of news, photos, honour boards and rolls of honour.

As expected, over a span of 100 years there have been both highs and lows with the sub-branch and the club. Yet speaking to Ron and Betty you get the feeling that overall, a lot of positive has been achieved. As Ron proudly gestured around the club during our interview, he recalled one high was that Cooroy was the second RSL to welcome community members in 1978. “We kept a close eye on what Warwick were doing as they were the first and we decided to follow suit. Now we have this club which is a great place for the community.”

Copies of ‘Commemorating Our Heritage’ can be purchased for $40 at Cooroy RSL or Cooroy Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group.

Driving Sponsorship in Communities

YOU may not think who you bank with matters. But it does. Bendigo Bank TewantinNoosa, Cooroy and Marcoola customers make a real difference every day simply by banking with the Community Bank.

The Community Bank model was developed by Bendigo Bank to provide financial services to regional communities during a time when the major banks were leaving towns.

Community Banks aim to:

• Provide a physical presence for face-to-face banking;

• Help the community share in the potential growth of their local economy; and

• Operate on a profit-with-purpose model, which means up to 80% of profits are returned directly back into the communities that generated them.

Operated by Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services, the Community Banks have been committed to giving back to the community they serve, and its recent efforts have been extraordinary.

Local groups and events are thrilled with the financial support awarded to them including Hoofbeats Art Exhibition, Peregian Digital Hub Meet Up events, Permaculture Noosa’s Community Pavilion, Noosa Community

COLOUR ME UP IN SUNNYBLUE @ THE ORIGINAL EUMUNDI MARKETS

WHAT is a ‘Surface Designer’? Well Elaine Styles is one of Australia’s most talented.

Very few of us would go through our everyday life without seeing or touching a product of a Surface Designer. These incredibly talented people have a keen eye for detail creating artwork that adorns surfaces of everyday objects we use; as well as the fashions we choose to wear.

As an accredited Surface Pattern Designer, one of Elaine’s vibrant designs was chosen to adorn the cover of Rachael Kings book ‘Pattern Pulse’ Vol 2. This book explores the intricate artwork of 100 Australian Surface Designers. Within these pages the analogue and digital techniques used by featured Artisans such as Elaine are delved into with much adoration and fascination.

But before the popularity of the book, came the popularity of the market stall. Elaine is one of the many long standing and respected stallholders at the Original Eumundi Markets. Her market stall, ‘Sunnyblue Designs’, is ornamented with colour, texture and style and is the destination of choice for those seeking Australian Made scarves, beach sarongs, indoor outdoor cushion covers, tote bags and so much more - all made from unique fabrics embellished with Elaine’s original handmade surface designs.

Sunnyblue scarves are light weight and with a design to suit every wearer. Sunnyblue’s array of homeware products are durable and easy care with vibrant colours that are mildew and fade resistant when purchased to enhance the decor of any undercover outdoor area.

Sunnyblue Designs is another of the fabulous stallholder stories just waiting to be discovered at the Original Eumundi Markets, Wednesday and Saturday, rain, hail, or sunshine.

Spotight on Mary Valley

IF YOU KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AROUND NOOSA, NOW AND AGAIN YOU MAY SEE STARS LIKE JULIA ROBERTS, GEORGE CLOONEY OR CHRIS HEMSWORTH, IF YOU’RE INTO THAT SORT OF THING.

BUT IF YOU WANT TO SEE REAL, PERMANENT STARS – THE WHOLE MILKY WAY, FOR THAT MATTER - HEAD FOR THE MARY VALLEY, WHERE THE NIGHT SKIES ARE STILL SO UNAFFECTED BY TOWN LIGHT-GLOW, YOU CAN CAPTURE THE UNIVERSE AROUND US IN ITS FULL SPECTACLE.

AND bring a telescope, Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce secretary Malcolm Oakley recommends.

The northern Mary Valley is less than an hour’s drive from coastal Noosa - less still again from Noosa Hinterland - and there’s an abundance of things to do and see.

It can be a rewarding day trip – better still, a great weekend away – and either way, you can feel you’re in a completely different place far from home, yet be able to get back there quickly, if need be.

Starting at Imbil, the main town on the southern end, drive into a pretty main street, with a range of traditional and modern eateries to choose from.

Good old pub food can be found at Imbil’s Railway Hotel where Steve Hooper and his team, who have owned and

operated the Railway for 35 years, will lay it on with big servings of parmies, steaks, pizzas, seafood, burgers and snacks to fortify you for a day’s activities ahead.

If you want something continental, Sandra Racji’s A Taste of Croatia café is a good place to try for a differently flavoured brekkie or lunch.

But the biggest new culinary influence in Imbil is the Wild Vine Café, opened last year, bringing a taste of Noosa Heads into the town with its organic, local produceinfluenced menu, occupying a main street building which now also hosts a new art gallery and walk-through local history showcase.

Operators Nathan Cox, Jessica Puttick and chef Daryl Moffat all met and worked at Season Restaurant in Noosa’s Hastings Street and have brought their enviable talents to Imbil – and played a major role in last month’s inaugural annual Mary Valley foodie event, GourMay.

“This time last year you couldn’t have found a coffee shop in the main street,” Malcolm said.

“Now we’ve got this, the Art on Yabba art gallery as well, and a popout space; there’s also a historic baker’s oven out the back.”

Imbil is best known for its camping and activities at Borumba Dam, a short drive from the town centre, along with fishing and a host of walking tracks.

According to Malcolm, it proudly hosts a huge range of accommodation options, from bed & breakfasts (hosted or unhosted) along with an abundance of campgrounds.

“There are many things to do: water activities at the dam like kayaking, water skiing, fishing,” he said.

“Proposed development of the dam hydro project will increase water

activities. Currently, you can hire kayaks to travel up and down Yabba Creek, go platypus spotting. There’s bike hire; it’s great for getting away for the weekend.

“There’s Imbil Country Cabins, lots of BnBs, cabins by the creek.

“Parents can take their kids to Puzzles on Yabba (on the main street) too, where they have some of the largest puzzles ever made, along with a range of products to take home.”

Keen walkers can also take a hike on the walking rail trail, the old (rails removed) railway track from Imbil to Brooloo.

“The trail was badly damaged by the floods last year,” Malcolm said.

“It has only just re-opened. It’s good for walking, cycling and horse riding to Brooloo.”

If camping, make your weekend base at Imbil, then venture north, following the Mary River of course.

The next town, a 9km drive up is Kandanga, sleepy village with a strong heart.

And if you are botanically inclined, make sure to stop at Kandanga Farm Store, where owners Amber and Tim Scott will show you round their magical produce store - where Round Up is definitely not on the product list.

Amber and Tim are part of the “new Mary Valley” movement that renewed the region following the cancellation of the controversial Traveston Dam construction, when many old-time residents sold up (or were bought up by the government of the day), heralding a new generation of farmers, hobby and full-time alike, along with a

fledgling, now burgeoning tourism industry. Stop for a coffee and cake, and chat to these two very knowledgeable people on how to grow things while avoiding poisoning your land with pesticides.

You will also always get a good country welcome at the Kandanga Hotel up the road, or the Kandanga Country Club on the views-rich Kandanga-Amamoor Road.

The views are a must-mention because only a few kilometres further, if you are thinking of a cosy weekend in pampered style, signs for the likes of Amamoor Lodge and Amamoor Homestead start to appear, a little south of the township.

This area is serene with a capital S, beautiful with a capital B - and well worth a visit.

Pull into the centre of town and pick up any essentials from the Amamoor General Store, which actually does some pretty good burgers and pizzas, too – as well as, according to Malcolm, being a constructive curiosity in itself, and “a good photo opportunity”.

Amamoor itself is walk/hike central, along with being the southern terminal for the famous Mary Rattler Railway operation, a historic, fully functional steam train service which begins its journey from Gympie, 20kms away, three or four times a week.

The whole operation is driven by a group of passionate volunteers who both love the region and love steam engines, with a trip on the Rattler “taking a journey back in time”.

There a number of journey options with the Rattler – even a food-tasting trip.

Directly across the road from the store is where the Rattler pulls in on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (There is also a special food tasting train on Thursdays, where a menu based on local foods and ingredients is part of the journey experience). There’s also the Village Green Café right next to the station platform.

“Even if you don’t ride the Rattler, be there to see it on the turntable [where the steam locomotive is turned around for the return journey to Gympie],” Malcolm said.

“It’s a nice thing to see for kids, to teach them history, and engineering.

“The trip itself talks about the local farming.”

Amamoor abuts the big Amamoor State Forest, which has an abundance of walks.

Malcolm says while there are longer walks available in the forest, most are short or convenient.

“There’s the Cascades walk, a ‘there and back’ but, there is a longer circuit, too.”

There is also ‘Walking with Wild Macadamias’, a new attraction at the popular Amama Day Use Area, opening in July last year, he said.

“This tells the story of the wild macadamia, and why it’s important to this region.

“Testing has revealed that 80% of the worlds commercial macadamia trees can be traced back to a single tree in the region.

“That’s why it’s fascinating; you can do this little walk, and some of these trees are only a metre high due to the forest shade,

but they’re 60 years old.

“It’s definitely worth having a look at,” Malcolm said.

“Amama has picnic grounds, too.

“There are longer walks available too; you can also go right up to the Gympie Muster site.”

A short trip up the road from Amamoor will take you to the tiny village of Dagun, which is pretty quiet during the week, but comes alive on Saturday with its weekly fruit and vegetable market in the afternoon, and there’s always a community gathering event on Sundays when the Rattler pulls into Dagun Railway Station.

The Mary Valley has undergone not one, but two, major changes in recent years, Malcolm said.

While the Traveston Dam issue saw many people leave the Valley, COVID was “almost another Traveston”, he said, but with a different outcome.

“With Traveston, the market changed with people moving on. It changed the demographics, many people left – then after, they couldn’t afford to buy back in.

“With COVID people couldn’t go away; the borders were locked down, and people from the coast discovered us because they couldn’t travel more than 50km - but could reach us.

“Gold Coast people couldn’t go south across the border, so they came north.

“So, this region did well – and people from the coast are still coming back.”

STYLISH TRANSFORMATIONS

JOSEPHINE INTERIORS, located in the Mary Valley hinterland, offers a range of services to assist clients in achieving their desired interior design transformation.

One of their specialties is Transitional Styling, which is helpful when clients are transitioning from one style of home to another or making a ‘tree change to the Mary Valley’. Understanding the importance of rethinking colors, furnishings, and finishes to suit the new style of the home is key.

Bathrooms are another focus.

Josephine states “incorporating function and aesthetics can be challenging, so having plans and elevations, details of how the space will be used and the correct fixtures and fittings is where we can really help.” Offering a range of services, from initial ideas consultation to soft furnishings and color advice, as well as full redecorating services.

KNOW YOUR BACKYARD BETTER WITH JOEL

expensive than some others, but Joel has carefully chosen quality local operations using local product for all coffee and meals stops – the cost of which are all included in the booking price - so there are no hidden costs to hit you when you least expect them.

Joel is an avid fan of Noosa’s strong environmental credentials, many of which have increasingly seeped into the way things are also done in the Mary Valley – and his choice of venues to visit are emblematic of his passion.

IF YOU want to visit the Mary Valley as an individual or a group, enjoying all the benefits of a one-price ticket without having to drive, Joel’s Journeys could be your answer.

Joel McPherson armed himself with two university degrees some 15 years ago, while developing a big interest and experience in tour guiding while studying.

Since then, he has worked for Qantas as a flight attendant in domestic and international operations including two years in London, but has also gained substantial tour guide experience with the likes of Intrepid Travel doing five-day tours out of Melbourne.

BLUE BROWN BAG

“I always wanted to start my own tour business but needed to get more experience with others first,” Joel said.

COVID saw the market shrink to nothing in 2020, so Joel headed back to his native state to be closer to his Noosa-based family – and finally start his own eco-tour operations with his intimate 12-passenger, well-equipped luxury bus.

The Mary Valley day-trip tours he offers are just a fraction of his choice itineraries, which go to all near points of the compass including Eumundi, Noosa hinterland, the Everglades, the Blackall Range, a brewery hop, even ‘Secrets of Noosa’ tour, and they’re open to individuals, small groups or organised club or corporate outings.

The tours initially may appear a tad more

While Joel’s customers cover all demographics, he is building an increasingly large international client base, that gives him the opportunity to present the region’s eco-credentials in a hands-on way.

“I’m a nature lover,” he said, “and I love supporting small, local businesses.

“I’m into the ‘Noosa legacy’ of passionate conservationists protecting Noosa forests, eco-systems and habitat, and I feature farm region tours where we can meet people passionate about looking after their backyard for future generations.

“I’m really happy to be creating these eco-tours, supporting the communities, and educating people in how the land here is looked after.”

For more information about Joel’s tour itineraries/costs/bookings, visit www. joelsjourneys.com.au, or call 0455 080 931, or Facebook/Instagram ‘joelsjourneys.au’

THE Blue-faced Honeyeater is one of the first birds to begin calling in the morning.

The distinguishing feature of this large honeyeater is the brightly coloured bare facial skin, which is a brilliant iridescent blue in mature adults. Of course, you may have seen birds with yellow or green facial skin as well. These are juvenile birds. When they first fledge, they have yellow face patches. At around six months the patch turns green and it doesn’t go blue until the bird is a year-and-a-half old.

The coloured facial skin is not a product of pigments, but instead it’s created by light being reflected from particles in the skin. Collagen fibres are arranged in a regular pattern to produce the colour we see.

The breeding season is quite long, running from June to February - which is more than half the year.

Rather than build their own nests, they prefer to take over abandoned nests of other birds. This is obviously a labour-saving gambit. No doubt the long breeding season also helps Blue-faced Honeyeaters to find and appropriate the abandoned nests of other birds. It’s not as if Blue-faced Honeyeaters are incapable of building their own nests; if they are forced to build a nest, it is a neat, round cup made of bark and lined with soft material such as grass.

Blue faced Honeyeater

Blue-faced Honeyeaters appear to exhibit play behaviour, which suggests they may be quite intelligent, perhaps on a par with Magpies. In one instance, a Blue-faced Honeyeater was observed playing with and imitating a Magpie. Flocks have also been seen performing group aerobatics, seemingly just for the fun of it.

PUMPKINS are part of a huge family of more than 900 species of plants called Cucurbits.

They are sometimes referred to as ‘winter squash’, as opposed to their cousins the summer squash which include zucchini and button squash.

Originating in North America and considered one of the oldest domesticated plants, there are now hundreds of varieties of pumpkin that have become an important part of the cuisine of most cultures of the world for both sweet and savoury applications.

Generally, the bright orange flesh of the pumpkin is either steamed, roasted, fried or made into velvety soup, but all the parts of the plant can be eaten, including the seeds, skin, flowers and leaves.

The main types we see for sale in this region are Butternut, Kent/Jap, Queensland Blue and Jarrahdale, with small baseball sized varieties like Minikins and Sweet Dumplings which are great for stuffing and popping up on the shelves occasionally.

I love skin on wedges of Kent pumpkin either sprinkled with olive oil, salt and dukkah or brushed with miso and roasted in a hot oven until caramelised and crispy.

CHICKEN AND ROAST PUMPKIN SALAD WITH FETA AND WALNUTS

INGREDIENTS:

750gm chicken breast

1kg Kent or Butternut pumpkin, peeled and diced

75gm walnuts, roasted

150gm feta

50gm rocket

50gm spinach

1 small red onion, peeled and finely sliced

50ml white wine vinegar

75ml extra virgin olive oil

1tbs Dijon mustard

Salt and Pepper

METHOD:

Dry the chicken breasts on paper towel and season well all over.

Sear in a pan on both sides until well coloured. Transfer to a roasting tray and roast in the oven at 180°C for 10 -12 minutes. Allow to rest before slicing into 5mm thick slices. Coat the diced pumpkin with olive oil, season and spread out in a single layer on a baking tray. Roast at 200°C for 25 – 30 minutes. Allow to cool to room temperature. Whisk together the mustard, vinegar, olive oil and salt and pepper. Mix together the chicken, pumpkin, walnuts, red onion, rocket and spinach, and dress with the vinaigrette.

Transfer the salad to a serving bowl and crumble the feta on top.

YOUR NOOSA

Volunteer in the spotlight

“Time is what we have to give.”

These lovely words are the parting legacy of Maureen Farrington. She is handing over the baton to a new generation of volunteers after 21 years of loyal service in the Noosa region, just in time to celebrate National Volunteer Week.

Volunteering is part of the fabric of Australian people, and it was a natural transition for Maureen after a long career serving others.

Instead of just relaxing in retirement, for the past two decades

Maureen has volunteered for Noosa Regional Gallery, Queensland Red Cross, Noosa Council, Vinnies, Tait Duke Community Cottage, Johns Landing, and the list goes on. She was always first in line to offer support through emergency services when disaster hit Noosa Shire.

“Seeing people connect and making a difference is the true reward of volunteering for me,” Ms Farrington said.

“And even though it’s time to slow down I feel this is not the end of volunteering for me just yet,” added Ms Farrington.

There is still time to see Maureen’s warm smile in action until she retires in June this year.

Sip and Social: Strengthening community bonds

Connecting neighbours and building resilience one sip at a time in the Noosa hinterland

It began as a beacon of hope for floodaffected hinterland residents - a way to rally together to heal and build resilience in the wake of the 2022 floods. But the success of Cooroy’s Sip and Social has been so great it continues today. Recognising the complexity of disaster recovery, Sip and Social welcomes newcomers and locals from across Noosa’s flood impacted

hinterland as a way to get to know their neighbours and form important connections.

Hosted by Cooroy’s Busstop Espresso, the popular Council initiative is delivered with the support of the state and federal governments.

“Sip and Social is about forming connections and bringing people together because that is what makes a

healthier, more resilient community, and aids in recovery,” says Tehya Grimes, Noosa Council’s Community Recovery and Resilience Officer.

For Beth and Rob Noy, owners of Busstop Espresso Cooroy, being part of Sip and Social has been a source of pride.

“We’re really proud to be part of it and to see locals coming together is really

special,” said Ms Noy.

Sip and Social is held Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 10:00am at Busstop Espresso, 201 Mary River Road, Cooroy for residents in flood impacted areas.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

to the community to help grow vegetables and lush gardens we rely on our residents to keep their green waste bins free of contamination by general waste.”

To help residents on their composting journey with mulch, Council is pleased to host two upcoming workshops with agricultural scientist and soil microbiology expert, Dr Sandra Tuszynska.

In Brief

Experience the power of art in nature

Autumn is the ideal time to mulch the gardens as it helps trap warmth and moisture from the summer months within the soil to see garden plants through winter.

To help, quality double-grind mulch is available at half price - $10 per cubic metre – from Council’s Eumundi Noosa Road Resource Recovery Centre from May 29 to June 4.

“As well as being great for keeping the moisture up to your plants, doublegrind mulch makes great compost to help home veggie gardens thrive,” Waste Education and Sustainability

Officer Peita Otterbach says.

“We know from our Let’s Get Waste Sorted survey that residents aspire to live more sustainably and mulching your gardens and veggie patches is a great place to start.

“By using double-grind mulch you’re helping to enrich your soil, plus support the recycling of green waste –such as plant and tree clippings - which keeps organic matter out of landfill where it would otherwise produce methane as it breaks down due to the anaerobic landfill conditions.

“To provide quality double-grind mulch

The Beginners Guide to Composting for Raised Garden Beds session at Peregian Beach Veggie Village on Saturday June 3, from 9am to 1pm, is ideal for those just getting started in the garden. For advanced composters, attend the Ultimate Guide to Composting for Syntropic Gardens session at Cooroy Community Garden, June 4, 9am to 1pm. “Whether you have a balcony or acreage, you will learn to implement the soil solution resolution into your own landscape for easy food and forest cultivation,” Dr Tuszynska said. To book, visit Council’s website at noosa.qld.gov.au

Council’s Resource Recovery Centre is at 561 Eumundi Noosa Road, Doonan.

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Floating Land, Noosa’s most significant biennial art event. Showcasing temporary installations in nature by acclaimed local, national, and international artists, Floating Land: Us and Them runs from June 24 to July 30, 2023.

Spanning multiple sites within the Noosa Region including the Boreen Point foreshore, Gympie Terrace, Johns Landing, Cooroibah, and the Park Road Boardwalk, visitors will explore different perspectives, and have assumptions challenged.

Featuring renowned artists including Hoda Afshar, Juan Ford, Todd Fuller, Kim Guthrie, and Gosia Wlodarczak, entry to the event is free for all ages. For more information, please visit www.floatingland.org.au

Noosa Libraries turn 50 this year

Small business is the engine room of Noosa’s economy.

More than 7000 businesses contribute to more than 50 per cent of all employment in the shire.

Café owners Jennifer Mendes and Jeoffroy Marcq are long-term locals, who are passionate about living in Noosa.

“We like being part of the community and we care about locals,” Ms Mendes said.

It’s been a challenging three years for the business owners tackling Covid, floods and a recent fire in the complex.

Ms Mendes has welcomed the ongoing Council support.

“Officers have listened to us and found ways to provide assistance and promote small business right across the shire,” she said.

“Business is getting better, but we still need more people to buy local as much as they can.”

Noosa Council is now part of the Small Business Friendly Charter, which provides a range of tools for councils to actively support small business.

Acting Economic Development Manager Lynne Banford says thriving small businesses make a vital contribution to our economy and our community.

You are invited to attend Noosa Libraries 50th Birthday Party!! With the first library being opened on 1 December 1973, this year we are celebrating being in the heart of our Noosa community for 50 years. A range of activities are planned throughout this year to celebrate this momentous milestone, starting with the launch of our new Mobile Library. This smaller more versatile vehicle will enable the service to access more locations and reach more customers. A new weekly timetable now provides an option to book the service to come to your community event! We’ll also be releasing our new library cards.

Join us on Saturday, 10 June, 9am – 12pm (official speeches 9-9.30am) for cake and family friendly activities at Joe Bazzo Park, Reserve Street, Pomona.

Vinyl Dreams 1970s Music Revolution

HOW THE 1970S CHANGED MUSIC BY TO NY WELLINGTON

A scintillating journey through a feverish decade – tracing the shifts in popular music that continue to define the art form today.

After the dense miasma of the sixties, the seventies hit like a hangover. Idealism took a pounding as cynicism began to pervade Western culture. Stagflation, Watergate and a futile war in Vietnam all weakened faith in government, while environmental disasters and an oil crisis proved there was even more to worry about than a Cold War. A culture of ‘me’ began to replace the hippie ideal of universal love. Yet at the same time, women and the LGBTIQ+ community stepped forward to actively assert their rights.

This tumult saw remarkable changes in music. Rock splintered into dazzling shards as technical innovation propelled experimentation. Music became a visual spectacle via glam, shock rock, disco and punk. Musicians co-opted elements of classical, jazz, electronic, world and avantgarde music. Monumental albums were born: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, Joni Mitchell’s Blue. From Elton John, Led Zeppelin and Yes to Talking Heads, Tangerine Dream and The Clash, no other decade instigated such a gloriously diverse range of musical styles. Brimming with beguiling stories and

little-known details, Vinyl Dreams is a fast-paced romp through the musical decade that defined all that came after. From the golden age of progressive rock to the new wave revolution, it traces the transformations that reverberate through to today, showcasing the fervour and enduring legacy of the decade’s music.

‘A damn good read. [The 1970s were] a gender-bending ride, filled with good memories, good times.’ Suzi Quatro, rock legend

‘A thrilling journey that meticulously charts rock music’s progress through [the innovations] that make the seventies possibly it’s most exciting era.’ David Williamson, playwright www.publishing.monash.edu

IN the heart of winter, the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) offers up some new exhibitions that will warm the brain and activate all your senses. A not a painting to be seen as film, video, ceramics, and installations take over the space. These exhibitions ask you to physically relate to their ideas.

Local artist and instigator of the 40 under 40 exhibition, Amanda Bennetts, explores the concept of time and the labour of self-care for those with disabilities and illnesses. She uses medical and disabilityrelated aesthetics to examine how time is perceived and experienced by nonnormative bodies.

Kevin Wilson presents his PhD project, a film installation exploring memory and trauma in the landscape together with twenty individual short videos of traversing interviews with artists, surveyors, geologists, farmers, neighbours, and Landcare workers through a 250-acre property in Kin Kin.

Young artist Odessa Mahoney de Vries, ventures into curating with an exhibition of Sunshine Coast artists together with guests from Brisbane that explores the materiality of nature. The works are characterised by an augmented scale and sensory tactility, achieved through texture, mark-making, scent and sound.

A special edition to this new block

This project funded by Noosa Council is the result of creative workshops that took place at the CBFAC pottery studio in April and May this year. Local food artist Patron for Noosa Open Studios 2023

FOOD and art are a natural fit for local chef, Matt Golinksi, who has this year become the Patron of the Noosa Open Studios art trail.

While Matt’s creativity is directed towards hospitality, he grew up in a household where art surrounded him.

“My father is an abstract landscape artist and my mother worked in the Montville gallery where he sold his work,” Matt said.

Noosa Open Studios 2023 President Simone Leao said the partnership with Matt was a great connection for the popular art trail event.

“Visitors to the NOS art trail come for the unique experience of visiting the working studios of our local artists and being stimulated by the creativity Noosa Shire is known for,” Simone said.

“But while they are here, they are also looking for great food, wine and coffee stops to complement their experience.

“Working with Matt combines both of these creative areas and we hope this partnership is the beginning of a collaborative interaction for our event.”

Noosa Open Studios will run October 6-15, covering two weekends and five weekdays. All studios will be open each weekend, with selective trails open each weekday.

Five local trails across the Noosa Shire will be available and art lovers can ‘choose their own’ art adventure. From beaches and hinterland to local towns– we will have studios open everywhere.

The NOS art trail guide will be available in early

September for visitors to begin previewing their journey and the artists they wish to visit. The NOS App, created last year, will be fully functional this year to help our visitors navigate their own trail, based on the artists they wish to visit.

Now in its eighth year, Noosa Open Studios, remains the largest art trail in Queensland with over 100 artists and many visitors returning year after year to purchase artwork and see the new and emerging talent in our region.

Wallace House, Noosaville – the historic home of Noosa Arts and Crafts Association and the birthplace of Noosa Open Studios – remains the event hub. From here you can view an extensive exhibition of artwork from all our artists and gather tips from the knowledgeable volunteers.

In early September, an exhibition of our artists’ work with be available at The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre.

As always, a collaborative project will be the highlight for our artists, who have the opportunity to apply their creative skills to a new medium. In 2023, artists will be placing their designs on a surfboard template, which will be displayed at the event launch and be sold as part of the event fundraising.

Noosa Open Studios is proud to continue its partnership with Noosa Shire Council, Tourism Noosa, and Noosa Arts & Crafts Association (Wallace House). The valuable support of many local sponsors makes the popular Noosa Open Studios Art Trail possible for artists and visitors alike. Please contact us if you would like to be a part of Noosa Open Studios 2023.

NOOSA OPEN STUDIOS ARTISTS GET TO WORK

WHILE the ten-day event isn’t until October 6-15, much preparation is happening behind the scenes to bring the event together.

NOS 2023 President and artist, Simone Leao said almost one-third of our 2023 artists are new participants, “which will bring some new work and styles into the event. This is a great response and reflects the growing popularity of Noosa Open Studios as a platform for to promote the work of local creatives.”

All 30-plus new studios will be inspected over the coming weeks to ensure they meet the event’s registration criteria.

Then the creative work begins, as artists get to work over the winter months to build their displays of new work for the event.

Simone said the aim of the trail was for artists to open their private working studios to the public, showing finished and ongoing works to demonstrate techniques and processes.

“Both our artists and visitors love the

personal interaction the trail offers, with many of our visitors returning time and time again to visit favourite artists and purchase new works.”

A variety of creative pursuits will be on display from painting, ceramics and jewellery making to knife-making, glass work, designers and textiles.

This event is made possible by the ongoing support of Noosa Shire Council, Tourism Noosa, and our generous sponsors.

Peter Pan is the beloved fictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie. A free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventure on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys interacting with fairies, mermaids, the Brave Girls and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland. Peter also fights the pirates and in particular his arch-enemy Captain James Hook.

Little Seed’s cast of talented performers include sisters Lilou and Ivy Guillmard. Lilou recently stole audiences hearts as Lucy Pevensie in Little Seed and Noosa Arts Theatre’s joint production of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. Ivy was one of the White Witch’s dwarves. The sisters were part of Little Seed’s production of The Little Mermaid Jnr last year with Lilou playing the role of Ariel and Ivy as the seahorse. Lilou, who plays Peter Pan, loves that theatre gives her the opportunity to play many roles and to meet and make friends of a variety of ages who love theatre as much as she does. Ivy, who plays the

role of Michael also loves that she gets to be onstage with her big sister and to share their love of performing.

DISCOVER the captivating artwork of Martyn Williamson, a talented New Zealand born Sunshine Coast artist.

For the past 45 years, Martyn has made Queensland his home while raising his three daughters and working as a landscape designer. While his physical artistry satisfied his creative spirit, his true passion blossomed through the strokes of his paintbrush.

With an open heart and nurturing soul, Martyn has formed deep connections with a diverse range of characters. From the unfortunate to the quirky, the downtrodden to the extraordinarily lucky, Martyn captures their essence and immortalizes them in his artwork. His ability to bond with those

AND THOUGH SHE BE BUT LITTLE, SHE IS FIERCE!

JUST like an ant, Kin Kin may only be quite small…. but boy is she mighty.

And after residing in the hills of Kin Kin for just over one year now, it’s safe to say I am one very proud local.

So, I really felt that this month’s write up had to be a little rave about a small hinterland gem with one very big heart.

While driving through the main street of Kin Kin, you may just miss it if you sneeze or blink! There’s not a great deal in the main street really… but what does exist is super vibrant and rather special.

And seeing I am writing a fitness blurb, I must say… Kin Kin really does have it all on the health and wellbeing front!!

The Kin Kin Community Group must get a special mention, as they really are the backbone and beating heart of this beautiful town, positively getting things going and the community involved!!

And on the fitness front they’ve been helping to support free to the public classes since March this year offering circuits, Pilates, Yoga and Breathwork classes and a weekly Mums & Mums to be stretch and flow class, just to name a few.

In town there is the beautiful old School of Arts Hall. That sure gets its own

workout through the week, hosting yoga, qi gong, physio yoga and also an amazing free healing session offered every Tuesday!

There is a small home-based gym Contender Fitness, run by locals John and Vee. And John has also just started coaching a weekly sports night, run by the Community Group. It’s also free to the public, where every Wednesday night the locals (from 5 years and up) play Oz Tag over three hours and have a yummy dinner served from the canteen too.

It’s a lovely active and social evening and has been very well supported so far.

It’s just so heart-warming and positive to see such a thriving, active and involved little community, proving that a lot can be made from just a little.

And I’m pretty chuffed to call it home. E x

important, especially to get opportunities to play internationally. As I pointed this out, she recognised that although it felt hard, it would be beneficial to do the interview. With a pep talk from me and some inner courage she did it…and she felt good about it.

WINTER is here, and another cold and flu season is upon us bringing stuffy noses, loud coughs and fatigue to workplaces, schools and homes in the coming months. Luckily there are things that you can be implementing now to help.

IT’S human nature to put off the things that are difficult or that you don’t enjoy doing. Perhaps you put them off until ‘later’, find excuses to not do them or simply put them out of your mind. Either way, the outcome is the same – the tasks don’t get done.

The thing is, to achieve any goal you must do things you don’t necessarily enjoy. One of my clients was recently offered the opportunity to be interviewed on a broadcast to more than 350,000 people. She said no. When I asked why, she said she felt uncomfortable and last time she spoke on a microphone in public she froze.

Her dream is to play her sport at the highest level. Building her profile is

Make a list of those tasks you are avoiding. They might include chasing money owed to you, having an uncomfortable talk with an employer or family member, doing paperwork, going to the gym, tidying up or something else. Notice which one is your least favourite. Move it to the top of the list and get it done first. You will be amazed at how good it feels, and how everything else after that seems much easier.

DIET - Ensuring your diet is filled with high quality and nutritious foods, whilst minimising refined sugars and processed foods is important this winter. Try including bone broths and soups to your diet for a rich source of nutrients and electrolytes; or cooking with ginger, for its anti-inflammatory properties, and garlic for its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

NUTRIENTS  - Vitamin C and zinc are two of the key nutrients required to support the daily function of the immune system. They both play roles in helping to reduce the severity and duration of common cold and flu’s making them essential for the next few months.

Vitamin D is another important nutrient for our immune system to function optimally but, with the average Australian getting less exposure during the shorter months of the year, it becomes even more necessary to get enough in our diet or to look for a quality supplement to achieve optimal levels.

HERBS - Andrographis: Helps to reduce the symptoms associated with common colds and flu’s and reduces the severity of upper respiratory tract infections symptoms. Optimally used for short periods when first feeling sick.

Echinacea: A helpful herb in modulating the immune system, providing support before, during and after colds and flu’s. This is a must have this winter season!

Put your best face on at Lakeridge

LAKERIDGE Health, Beauty & Skincare Clinic has been established more than 20 years and has evolved to meet everchanging health and beauty profession needs.

The clinic caters to all; facials designed for hydration and relaxation, or clinical requirements.

Problem skins - hormonal, pigmented, ageing - are all catered for.

The clinic has medical-grade skincare, IPL and LED light therapies, skin needling, ultrasonic skin lifting - and now, injectables.

“We were approached by clients requesting injectables. Knowing there are a variety of treatment systems and products on the market, delivery of them was very important to our ethos.

“We needed a doctor who had been in the industry for some time and was sympathetic to the outcomes, who also knows skincare as well as being good with injecting, who listens to clients’ needs, but also gives good solid advice which produces the best outcomes.

“That way everyone is happy with the end result. We introduced Dr Ruth Johnson to our clinic last year and are so pleased with our decision.

“A qualified medical practitioner, graduating from UQ in 2004, she has been working in cosmetic injectables for four

years and has done multiple courses to improve her knowledge and technique.

“She also works as a GP specialising in skin cancer medicine and is intimately aware of the anatomy and vasculature of the face.”

Dr Ruth offers neurotoxins for reducing wrinkles, collagen stimulators and skin boosters to increase tissue depth and hydration as well as traditional fillers to lift and enhance.

“She also has an Ultraformer 3, a highfrequency ultrasound device to tighten and lift sagging skin, as well as offering skin needling to enhance its appearance.

“Your treatment journey starts with a consultation to discuss treatment options based on your concerns and skin assessment.”

Lakeridge is Cooroy’s health and beauty destination. Co-owners Lisa Lister and Rachel Scanlon have created a welcoming

space. The comments from the clients are “as soon as they walk in the door, they feel relaxed”.

Busy, stressed lifestyles are common now and Lakeridge wants to create a peaceful atmosphere.

Lisa is well known for her Bowen therapy. Rachel is highly experienced in IPL hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Margaret’s massages are in demand and Tara does the most amazing facials.

Lakeridge also specialises in manis, pedis and waxing. The team has many years’ collective industry experience. Call 5442 6239 or book online via www.lakeridge.com.au. Unit 2 11 Garnet Street, Cooroy.

Maroochy regional bushland Botanic Gardens

THESE beautiful gardens are located at Palm Creek Rd Tanawha. Set on 82 hectares there is much to explore from the Rain Garden, the beautiful sculpture garden to a couple of longer trails. You can easily spend a morning or afternoon wondering around with detailed maps to guide you. These gardens are also home to 14 Koalas so you might be lucky enough to see one.

I have been a couple of times with the kids and we like to start at the Bushland Sculptured Garden which is breathtaking with its manicured lawns and pathways. All sculptures have a plaque with the artist’s name and an interpretation of their work. This is so good for the kids giving them and appreciation of the arts while having fun. I think this is a very romantic part of the gardens where lovers picnic and plenty of weddings have been held. This is a 700m circuit taking approximately 30min’s.

We then head to the Lagoon Walk it’s 900m and takes around 25-35min’s. There is a lovely little bridge to cross and many varieties of trees including Grey gum, Bloodwood and Blue gum - remember to look out for those Koalas. This brings you

out onto a lovely open grassed area where we throw down the picnic blanket for lunch.

From the wide open lawns we head off to the kids’ favourite part of the gardens. The Whipbird Walk - a 600m circuit - is such a great place for kids to explore and discover a magical wonderland. With a large whipbird nest, a small children’s library, stepping stones and plenty more for them to make their own magical world. This is a place where parents can sit back and relax while the kids enjoy the environment around them.

After the Whipbird Walk is the Rain Garden, Contemplation Garden, Rock Pools, Rare and Endangered, Fern Glade, Mossy Log Walk, and the Ephemeral Wetlands. And a couple of longer walks - Creek Walk 1.3km, and Upland Bushwalk ,2.1km.

The Upland Bushwalk and Creek Walk are going to take you a good 1.5 to 2 hours. Along these trails we’ve seen many bird varieties the Golden whistler, Pale-headed rosella and Variegated Fairy-wren to name a couple. As usual they are very fast and I wasn’t able to capture a good photo. From walking through gumtree’s to going over a couple of creek crossings which changes

to mossy rocks and beautiful Cabbage tree palms. The terrain is just beautiful.

These gardens with plenty of large covered areas with tables and chairs area great place to celebrate that special occasion. Most of the Garden is wheel chair friendly. There are no BBQ’s and dogs are NOT permitted. They also have heaps of events from musicians playing once a month, kid’s activities, guided walks and more. Please check out their web page for details.

I highly recommend these lovely gardens, and as always remember your hat, sunscreen and water. Happy Hiking!

Just an update on the Noosa Trail from Pomona to Cooran. The trail is now completed and is fantastic, all the old signs are down and replaced with new ones. It is now very easy to follow.

The magic of minerals

THE journey of a flourishing garden starts with one crucial element; the soil. Often overlooked, soil quality plays a pivotal role in determining the success of your plants.

The soil beneath our feet is not just a medium for plants to grow; it is a living ecosystem that houses an intricate web of organisms. These include beneficial bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and other microorganisms that contribute to the overall health and vitality of your garden. By nurturing your soil, you establish a solid foundation that fosters robust plant growth, maximizes nutrient availability, and encourages water retention—all vital components for a thriving garden.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, understanding how to improve your garden soil is essential for

creating a thriving outdoor oasis. The best and simplest way to improve your soil and ensure that your soil produces highquality plants, is to add a soil conditioner. Adding a quality soil conditioning product can provide essential biological components and mineral elements, which are essential for healthy plants.

• New garden beds - apply a soil conditioner ideally 3-4 weeks before planting.

• Established garden beds - add during the planting process.

• Existing plants - spread it evenly over the soil, around the plant, and water in.

TOP TIP - Soil texture significantly impacts the retention of nutrients and water. Adding a soil conditioner to your soil prior to planting enables pH adjustment, similar to applying lime, and it can surpass the need for gypsum or dolomite, as it provides

essential minerals and trace elements.

• In clay soils, it enhances water penetration and drainage.

• In sandy soils, it reduces moisture leaching and nutrient loss, making them more accessible to your plants.

Another advantage of adding a soil conditioner is the development of a robust root system in plants, enabling them to explore a larger area of soil for nutrients and moisture. Consequently, the plants become healthier and more resilient, and better equipped to withstand extreme weather conditions.

With your soil now properly prepared, you are ready to commence planting.

Pop in and see us at the nursery for advice on the best products to use in your garden to help your plants flourish!

Happy Gardening! Jacinta

Trails from the Boneyards

LET’S take a look at one of the Sunny Coast’s less known and less used trail networks, The Boneyards. A handfull of rough and raw trails that have been hand built by a small group of talented trail fairies over the past 10 years. Named so because it lies in the bushland behind the Mooloolah cemetery. This place doesn’t get a lot of use, likely because it is quite tricky to navigate due to its labyrinth of old logging & firetrails. These trails have been built with shovels and picks so the foot prints are quite small and tight, weaving around trees, over logs and rocks etc to make best use of the environment with as little damage as possible. There are very few of the jumps, berms and flow found in modern trail networks that are all being homogenised into high speed flow trails with earthmoving equipment. Now don’t get me wrong, I like jumps & flow, but I also like tight & technical, and this is what you will find at Boneys.

There are a couple of access points. We usually park near Corbould park raceway, the other is to park at the Ferny Forest trail head. Its been a year or so since we were here so we are a little excited to see if we can discover some of the new trails heard about on the grapevine. For this reason we are both on E-bikes enabling a little more adventurous exploring.

First trail is Bee Hive, a mix of tight and open trail that will keep you guessing as to what’s around the next corner, very typical of most of the trail here. Then it’s down a bit of firetrail to find the climb to Side Winder, Pete’s & Climbit Change. This climb is aptly named Toughen Up and we are pleased to be on our Levos. It finishes with a couple of very tight switchbacks that will catch a lot out. Our first descent is a ripper, Sidewinder, with some very committing drop ins, it loops back to the bottom of Toughen Up for another go at those tight switchbacks you dabbled on.

The condition of the trails is pretty good, especially considering their un-officialness & lack of ownership. There are some deep

ruts and washouts and the occasional tree across, so ride with caution. The lower trails Congo, Amazon & Daintree Dreaming are all tight and windy and live up to their picturesque names. They are low so hold lots of water, so no go in the wet. All these trails will keep you guessing and thinking fast, old school mountain biking to the max. Boneyard trails are definitely

not beginner friendly but with care and some local guidance they can be enjoyed by most intermediate riders. Ferny Forest is a 10km machine-built loop that is very beginner friendly and a great place to build skills and fitness.

TEAM IMPACT DEDICATED AND COMMITTED

IT’S been a very busy start to the year for Team Impact. The team has competed in Brisbane, Cooroy, Darwin, Townsville, Gold Coast and the latest tournament last weekend was in Bundaberg.

“What a great start it has been with the team having 25 bouts with 21 wins and we are not even halfway through the year yet. We also have Cohen & Paige Robinson representing Australia in Samoa at the Oceania Championships held May 21-24, “Coach Evans said. This is another great milestone for our club with Mark Evans being selected as the head coach for the Australian team.

Last weekend we had Jake Ward, Cohen Robinson and Slade Gray compete at the Wide Bay Championships held in Bundaberg. All three had convincing wins against quality opponents to take out the Championships in their respective divisions. “I am very proud of

these guys for their wins. They all had to dig deep and all boxed extremely well to win their bouts. We have been on the road pretty well

non-stop this year boxing all over the place. These kids just love to box and the whole team is very committed to the sport. There

is a great vibe in the gym at the moment and I am predicting a very successful year for the whole team. I am truly blessed to have such a great bunch of disciplined, dedicated and committed young athletes and I look forward to helping these kids reach their individual dreams,” Evans said.

KIN KIN FUN AND FEED NIGHT

KIN KIN Community Group (KKCG) has commenced a weekly community sports program and dinner night called ‘Fun and Feed.’ Held every Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm, until June 21, offering sports skills and social games with the term’s focus sport, League Tag. An initiative to bring Kin Kin Community together, offering sports for juniors to adults, and offering a community dinner, it kicked off in May for a 7 week program. All welcome and we encourage all of the community to attend and regularly connect. Side games are also set up for all ages to enjoy and cater for all sporting levels.

This program is supported by the Pomona & District Community House, who also see the need for connecting our hinterland communities, and the importance of community connection, being a remote community. The KKCG hopes to continue on next term with a new sport of focus provided on funding support.

NEW LOOK POLO EVENT SET TO DELIGHT THE COMMUNITY

NOOSA Country Polo has announced a new look polo event on Saturday 24 June 2023, set to delight the whole community.

Polo enthusiasts who love witnessing thrilling polo, sipping champagne, beautiful fashion and of course, stomping divots will find all they love about a day at the polo, in an understated and elegant setting, in the Noosa Hinterland at the foot of majestic Cooroy Mountain.

Noosa Country Polo owners Niall and Illy Coburn want to ensure the whole community feels welcome at the 2023 event and have announced some new additions which will delight locals of all ages.

A dedicated children’s zone will ensure families feel welcome, featuring pony rides, an animal nursery and face painting, with a variety of food trucks, bars and other outlets to ensure everyone has a great day out.

The entertainment will create a festival feel for the day, with music and equestrian performances added to the program.

Niall Coburn of Noosa County Polo said “We invite everyone to come and experience the sportsmanship, beautiful horses, Argentinian gaucho culture and music.”

The event is part of the Queensland Polo Association and The Australian Polo Federation and will include a

polo tournament with players from around Queensland.

The new format is designed to raise money for charity, with all money raised in 2023 to be donated to local charity Katie Rose Cottage.

KIN KIN LOOKING TO BOWL OVER NOOSA COUNCIL

SUNDAY

JUNE 4

MARK your calendars for the muchanticipated Pink Stumps Day, as the annual McGrath Foundation fundraiser returns to Kin Kin on Sunday, June 4. This beloved event holds a special place on the Kin Kin calendar, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

We are thrilled to announce that Jimmy and Tam, the winners of the 2020 TV show “The Block” and now proud residents of our hinterland community, will be joining us for this year’s match. Jimmy will take to the field as part of the Kin Kin team, adding excitement and star power to the event.

Don your finest pink outfit and join us at the Kin Kin Sportsground, located at 57 Main St, Kin Kin, to be part of the enthusiastic crowd cheering on their respective teams. The players themselves

will be wearing pink tutus, fully embracing the spirit of the day, and they are already sharpening their batting and bowling skills in preparation for this momentous occasion.

Make no mistake, this is serious business, as the Kin Kin Community eagerly showcases their superb cricket skills against none other than Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, Councillors, and Council staff. It will be a thrilling contest that promises entertainment, camaraderie, and fierce competition. Behind the excitement and festivities lies a cause close to our hearts. Many of us have been touched by the devastating impact of breast cancer on our loved ones. The McGrath Foundation aims to make a difference by providing specialist McGrath Breast Care Nurses who offer physical, psychological, and

emotional support to individuals and their families affected by breast cancer. From diagnosis through treatment, these essential services are provided free of charge.

By attending and supporting Pink Stumps Day, you contribute to the vital funds needed to continue these services. Every dollar raised goes towards helping the McGrath Foundation place Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia, ensuring that no one faces the challenges of breast cancer alone.

In addition to the thrilling cricket match, there will be an array of fantastic raffle prizes generously provided by our local business community. With over $500 worth of awesome prizes up for grabs, you have the chance to win something truly special while supporting this important cause.

You can purchase raffle tickets with cash or online at the following venues: Noosa Council’s main building in Pelican St Tewantin (Customer Service Level 2), Noosa and Cooroy Libraries, Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Aquatic Centre, The J.

Your participation and support will help us achieve our fundraising goal and make a lasting impact.

Batting opens at 1pm, right after the markets at the Kin Kin Sportsground. Don’t miss out on the magic of Pink Stumps Day and the opportunity to be part of a community coming together for an incredible cause.

LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay

The Federal Government has now delivered its first full year Budget and there is concern that $185 billion in additional expenditure will add to inflation and put more pressure on interest rates, making it even harder for people with mortgages to balance their budgets.

The increase in wages for aged care workers is a positive step, as is the response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which include addressing the backlog of veteran’s claims and funding suicide intervention training programs for the ex-service community.

The Budget predicts that unemployment will rise, real wages will not increase this year, and inflation will remain high. Despite the supposed energy bill relief, the Budget confirms that bills will increase by almost $500.

Unfortunately, parts of this Budget only exacerbate the rising cost of living. There is a new tax on farmers, who are being asked to pay for the biosecurity costs of imported food, and the 19 percent heavy vehicle road user charge hike over the next three years will increase transportation costs and be passed onto consumers.

One forecast in the Budget that I am particularly concerned about is the prediction that over the next five years net overseas migration will rise by 1.5

million people, placing even more strain on housing and rental accommodation, roads and infrastructure, and health and medical services. Already our roads are congested, our hospitals are full, there is already a housing shortage and rental crisis, but the Budget doesn’t detail the massive investment that will be required to service this surge in population - and without that massive investment every Australian’s living standards will fall.

The Federal Government needs to do more to attract doctors to small communities like Imbil and Pomona to ensure people have local access to GP services. I had hoped this Budget would correct Labor’s amendments to the Distribution Priority Area classification, which made it more attractive for doctors to practice in outer metropolitan areas instead of regional communities like Wide Bay. Unfortunately, there was no change to this warped policy.

Increased Medicare rebates to encourage more doctors to bulk bill children, pensioners, and other Commonwealth concession card holders has the potential to assist in improving health care affordability for some people, but the General Practitioner and medical and allied health workforce shortage in parts of Wide Bay is an ongoing issue that I, together with the Primary Health Network are continuing to work on.

SANDY BOLTON State Member for Noosa

After the latest disgraceful incident in Maryborough, Queenslanders understandably have had enough, including our police, when it comes to repeat youth offenders. As one of only five MPs who voted in favour of an amendment in Parliament to see mandatory one year sentencing for recidivist youth offenders convicted of stealing more than two cars, I am equally frustrated, especially with the ongoing lack of support for remote relocation or diversion sentencing.

Thank you to ‘A Current Affair’ for sharing our plight with ongoing issues of heavy haulage affecting our community. May we see an end to what is so very wrong soon.

For anyone unfamiliar, this is what happens when processes and legislation are flawed, leaving our communities devastated, with information available at Noosa 360. In amongst efforts, our office continues to fight for an Independent Environmental Protection Agency to address these failings. For those wishing to report issues direct, please contact our office for avenues including official complaints for dust pollution, haulage vehicles and quarry operations. We will also update you when there has been an outcome to Noosa Council’s court case.

In Parliament, our unrelenting advocacy continues for a review of Queensland’s committee system. If our ‘de facto’ Upper House is not fixed, we will continue to see results that fall far short of what Noosa and indeed QLD needs and expects. Ultimately, we must repair the foundation that decisions are made on. My speech on the proposed

caps to local government election campaign spending included experiences from my time as a Councillor. Whilst decreases are another step in the right direction, there are concerns that the proposed cap is still too high for smaller shires such as Noosa. $30,000 is a lot of money especially for those who are not aligned to a political party and as MP’s raised, politicising local government is a backward step for QLD. This is why more than ever we need independent representatives who are focused on their community, not party stances, ideology, or career paths. Ensuring the integrity of our elections is vital, which includes fixing associated processes such as ending voter data harvesting by political parties which saw overwhelming support in our last community survey. We can make the change; however, it takes all who are tired of being ‘hoodwinked’ to stand up and say ‘enough, is enough’!

With so much time between columns and so much to share, please stay ’in the loop’ via Noosa 360 with updates on a range of important issues we are working on, including with Nicklin MP Rob regarding those dangerous Cooroy intersections. In addition, follow ‘Sandy Bolton MP’ on Facebook to receive information as soon as available, and subscribe to our e-newsletter at www.SandyBolton.com/Newsletters which also ensures you are advised when Noosa specific surveys are held. Always, if you have any questions or require assistance regarding state related matters, do not hesitate to contact my office at 5319 3100 or email noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Until next month, Sandy x

INVESTING IN STUDENT WELLBEING

We’re investing more in the health of our schoolchildren.

The Palaszczuk Government will be investing $106.7 million over three years for the Student Wellbeing Package, which ensures every student, in every primary and secondary state school in Queensland, has access to a health and well-being professional at their school.

Under the package, 50 Queensland state schools – including a total of thirteen schools in the Nicklin electorate – will participate in the GPs in Schools Pilot program, and up to 464 additional wellbeing professionals will be employed to provide extra support for student mental health and wellbeing.

I am proud to be part of a government that understands how important it is to invest in the next generation of workers and leaders. Our local schools will benefit immensely from professionals such as psychologists, social workers and guidance officers, supporting students and teachers alike.

‘BEYOND CUPS’ INNOVATION CHALLENGE

We want to hear your ideas on how we can make takeaway coffee cups and lids more sustainable with our Beyond Cups

Challenge.

The accelerator program will start by recruiting Queensland businesses that are working to deliver alternatives to singleuse plastics.

Innovation Architects will lead an intensive bootcamp for the selected businesses to pitch their product or service and assess their market readiness for suitability to continue with the program.

A shortlisted number of these businesses will seek to collaborate with industry partners who will assist with developing a commercial proof of concept.

The strongest innovators will be given the opportunity to pitch their solutions to industry and government partners through this program, and ultimately receive seed funding by the end of the year.

If you have an idea for how we can make more sustainable cups, let us know by the June 16 at https://beyondcups.com!

CLARE STEWART Noosa Mayor

Noosa Council has welcomed the transfer of more than 60 Noosa short-stay properties to the permanent rental market since late February. Of the 488 properties on the permanent rental market in Noosa between February 2023 and May 2023, 64 were previously short-stay properties. The news comes after a mailout of letters sent by me on behalf of Council to hundreds of holiday home and short-stay property owners in early February asking them to consider leasing their homes to longterm tenants to help tackle Noosa’s housing crisis. Council could not otherwise deliver 64 houses to the market alone, and certainly not in a matter of months, so the result of the letter campaign is very good. Every vacant and short-stay property made available for longterm tenants means one less family struggling to secure a home. The letter outlined the financial and community benefits for homeowners when making their properties available for rent by a permanent tenant. e.g., cheaper rates, insurance, and a consistent income. Council’s recently adopted Housing Strategy proposes a range of initiatives and solutions to assist all stakeholders and the state and federal governments – which are responsible for social housing - to improve housing choice and affordability. A collaborative effort is key to helping tackle the housing issues and we welcome wholeheartedly the move by so many property owners to transition their properties from short term accommodation to permanent. Good news for our Black Mountain residents. We’ve issued tender documents for the landslide repair - a week after design

concepts were endorsed by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority - and we hope to have a contractor in place as soon as possible. Council is incredibly pleased to reach this milestone to issue this multi-million-dollar tender. Engineers have grappled with the complexities and challenges of restoring such a significant landslip. The landslide is as wide as a rugby league playing field and as deep as a five-storey building. It’s the largest ever reconstruction tender to be issued by Noosa Council. Council thanks residents for their patience and appreciates the challenges residents of Black Mountain continue to face and we continue to endeavour to assist in as many ways as possible.

Finally, the 10km track, formally known as Trail 5, which links Pomona to Cooran, is now open again following an upgrade. Works included trail realignments, selective widening, resurfacing, drainage and new wayfinding and interpretive signage.

Part of the Noosa Trails Masterplan, the upgrade aims to improve town connectivity, increase trail use for education and recreation, drive tourism and enhance the trail’s effectiveness as a fire break. The project received $1.61 million in funding from the Federal and Queensland Governments’ Local Economic Recovery (LER) Program through Category D of the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, which supports projects that improve the community’s resilience and economic recovery.

Following the success of the Cooroora Trail upgrade, priority upgrades of Trail 7 (Yurol Trail) will follow later this year.

Until next month stay safe, Clare

MEET LIAN SCOTT SUTER SMITH CLEINE

Lian was born and raised in Southeast Queensland, specifically in Brisbane’s bayside region, on a small acreage. After completing high school, Lian pursued a business degree at the University of Queensland. After completing her studies, she embarked on extensive travels around the world.

Upon settling in London, Lian secured a position working for a luxury British car manufacturer in high-end event coordination. After spending some time in London, Lian returned to Australia and worked in sales in Sydney. Eventually, Lian returned to the Noosa Shire to raise her family and pursue a career in Real Estate.

As a real estate agent with over 15 years of local living in Noosa Shire, I feel truly blessed to have raised my family in this beautiful part of the world. I made the transition from beach side sales after moving from Peregian to Verrierdale and now live on a seven acre property in the Noosa hinterland.

I have had the opportunity to sell various properties ranging from macadamia nut farms, cattle properties, horse properties, and small and large lifestyle acreages. What I enjoy most about this job is its diversity in marketing every property. Each has its individual qualities, charm and characteristics.

While local knowledge, sharp marketing, understanding local market conditions and communicating effectively are essential, the ability to connect with clients and understand their needs within negotiation is crucial. It’s the human element that ties it all together.

Having worked in both Noosa beach side and Cooroy agencies I noted a huge cross over of clients selling acreage and downsizing to the beach side and visa versa. In 2023 we have seen more subject to sale transactions than in the previous few years when the market was moving quickly with many cash transactions

from southern purchasers. At Suter Smith Cleine our agents specialise in Noosa beach side and hinterland sales. If you are considering selling and would like a consultation, feel free to get in touch with me..

WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY ...

From the start Lian was a pleasure to work with and her knowledge of the local market is indisputable. Lian proved herself to be a great negotiator and we are very happy with the final result. She managed to get contracts signed in record time with all parties happy at the outcome.

THIS impeccable 2.5-acre property is ‘next level’ in terms of quality, presentation, and lifestyle - located in a verdant acreage belt just five minutes to town, schools, and rail. It offers family-friendly hinterland living of the very highest calibre with northeast facing alfresco entertaining and glorious parklike gardens. The home itself covers approximately 420sqm - with a well designed floor plan facilitating excellent separation.

Across a single level it comprises formal double doored entry foyer, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, premium central kitchen with walk-in pantry, two separate living areas, expansive covered terrace overlooking sundrenched heated saltwater pool, separate laundry, and triple lock up garage with storage.

9-foot ceilings, ducted air-conditioning plus 3 x split system units, ceiling fans, 2-pac kitchen with granite benches,

luxury ensuite with dual vanities and spa bath, tinted windows, alarm system, new water filtration system, solar hot water, and 5.5kW solar power - are just some of the existing features of the home. Current long-term owners also had the roof resurfaced and pointed in 2021. Infrastructure on the property is also in pristine condition - with 2x underground tanks with capacity of 90,000-litres, 25,000-litre poly tank (servicing shed), 11x3m 3-bay American style powered barn with mezzanine, circular driveway with dual street access, and new biocycle system (2021). The parklike grounds are absolutely magnificent; with masses of grassy expanse, fruit trees, raised herb/ vegetable beds, and mature trees, flowering shrubs - a mixture of native and tropical, attracting an abundance

of bees, birds, and butterflies…they are stunning; all who visit are suitably impressed!

Six Mile Creek traverses the property at the rear and a pump supplies water from the creek to the garden taps for irrigation - this is a very water and energy-efficient property, you are one step closer (or more) to selfsustainability, not only saving you money, but minimising your carbon footprint.

COUNTRYSIDE WINS NATIONAL AWARD

KIMBERLEA and Eliot Krause of Countryside Realty Noosa won the national Sales Campaign of the Year award at the 11th annual Real Estate Business Awards in Sydney last May.

The couple, accompanied by their Countryside team, were awarded winners of the Sales Campaign of the Year category, with the agency finalists in the Boutique Agency of the Year category.

Kimberlea expressed their excitement and gratitude, noting that winning the award for the best sales campaign in Australia was astonishing.

“To be selected as the best Sales Campaign in Australia is simply astounding. Knowing the hard work and determination we put into achieving not only the best results for our clients, but supporting and nurturing them throughout the sales process has been recognised at a National level as Australia’s finest.”

They credited their entire team and their principal, Robyn, for their success and expressed gratitude to all the award nominees and winners.

Robyn praised Kim and Eliot’s achievement and highlighted the

dedication of the entire team at Countryside.

“After being in business for over 20 years now, it is incredible to be recognised as finalists in the Boutique Agency category. It is a testament to the entire team who put time and dedication into Countryside each and every day,” Robyn enthused.

DOONAN CHARACTER HOME WITH VIEWS TO NOOSA

THIS exquisite character home offers a unique blend of countryside serenity and breathtaking coastal views. The home is perched high on a ridge, with sweeping vistas of Noosa Hill and Laguna Bay in the Northeast. Take your time adding value while you enjoy expansive outdoor entertaining areas and a sparkling inground pool

The current home was renovated in 2014 providing a comfortable, scenic residence with the opportunity to personalise at your leisure. Built by master craftsmen, the design is optimized for the elevated site. Nestled among 1.38 acres of landscaped gardens, you’ll cross a timber footbridge to enter the home’s vaulted entryway surrounded by glass. The central atrium is flooded with natural light and a well designed privacy wall creates separation for the kitchen and dining areas offering commanding views. The dining room and lounge open onto a deep timber deck, perfect for entertaining and complete with a servery from the kitchen.

The designer kitchen is a chef’s dream and also offers plenty of natural light, large glass window panes, high ceilings and quality appliances throughout. One end of the deck is fully screened offering the ideal outdoor retreat, if

you can tear your gaze away from the breathtaking scenery. A separate lounge room with fireplace, double door master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in-robe, office and 2nd bedroom with ensuited main bathroom are also located on the upper level.

The lower level of the home is highly adaptable, depending on your needs. The current owners have transformed the space into a self-contained guest apartment - a studio with a kitchenette

and library - but it could easily accommodate teenagers or serve as a multi-purpose space.

Outside, the property is surrounded by beautiful gardens, and a poolside gazebo overlooks the oasis pool and spa, which are heated by the sun and solar energy. Venture beyond the pool to find a secret pasture, home to abundant birdlife and a visiting family of grazing wallabies. There is also extra parking for a boat or trailer in the

carport off the driveway. Offering plenty of storage throughout, you will have a place for everything you own, including the vintage wine collection.

The home is equipped with more solar power than you will ever need, making it incredibly energy efficient. Freshly painted outside you can move in with the comfort of knowing you need not do anything for several years. Despite the tranquil surroundings, the property is only a short drive to Noosa, historic Eumundi, or bustling Peregian Beach, and just 20 minutes from the Sunshine Coast airport. With absolute privacy and a bird’s eye view over Noosa, this property is a must-see.
