How to Beat Heart Disease: With a Periodontist, You Can Win

February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. You can fight back by eating healthy; becoming physically active; controlling your high blood pressure or cholesterol; and getting a clean bill of health from your periodontist.

Periodontal disease, heart disease and stroke may seem to have an unlikely connection, but researchers have found that gum disease sufferers are nearly twice as likely to also suffer from coronary heart disease. Research studies have discovered that oral infection is indeed a risk factor for certain types of cancer, stroke and other serious heart and health problems.

The Connection Between Your Mouth and Heart:

There are several theories, which may explain the link between heart disease, stroke and periodontal disease, which include the following:

Bacteria In the Mouth – There are many different strains of bacteria. Researchers assert that some of these strains of bacteria enter the bloodstream through your mouth and attach to the fatty plaques in the blood vessels of the heart. This attachment then contributes to clot formation, causing grave danger to the individual.

Inflammation – Periodontal bacteria causes severe inflammation in the gum tissue, which elevates the white blood cell count.

Immune System Deficiency –Individuals who experience particularly high levels of oral bacteria may have weaker immune systems. These factors may induce specific vascular effects, which have previously been shown to contribute in the onset of certain forms of heart disease.

There is little doubt that the presence of periodontal disease can worsen existing heart conditions. In fact, for many patients periodontists and cardiologists work as a team in order to treat individuals experiencing both conditions.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Since periodontal disease appears to be a risk factor for both heart attack and stroke, it is extremely important to seek immediate treatment with an experienced periodontist. Dentists who specialize in the treatment and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease – periodontists – are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria

as they receive extensive training in these areas during their three additional years of education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures, and dental implants.

Initially, the periodontist will conduct thorough examinations to assess the exact condition of the teeth, gums and jawbone. X-rays can be helpful in determining whether bone loss is prev-

alent in the upper and lower jaw. The periodontist is also able to conduct deep cleaning treatments to remove hardened calculus (tartar) deposits from the gum pockets. An antibiotic may be prescribed to ensure that the bacteria is completely destroyed and the periodontal infection does not spread to the rest of the body. Antibiotics alone are not enough to treat periodontal conditions but dental treatment along with antibiotics can have the power to get

and keep your body healthy. Fortunately, you can fight back against heart disease. Visiting a periodontist today to remedy gum disease may be one of the best things you can do to help lower these overall health risks. If you are over the age of 45, have any health compromise, experience bleeding gums, or are interested in keeping your natural teeth for your lifetime call a periodontist right away. Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

What Is Diabetic Eye Disease?

Approximately 20.8 million Americans have diabetes. More than half of these individuals are at risk for vision loss and other health problems, because they don’t know they have the disease.

Diabetic eye disease, a group of eye problems that affects those with diabetes, includes diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. The most common of these is diabetic retinopathy, which affects 5.3 million Americans age eighteen and older.

Diabetic retinopathy is a potentially vision threatening condition in which the blood vessels inside the retina become damaged from the high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes. This leads to the leakage of fluids into the retina and the obstruction of blood flow. Both may result in vision loss.

The National Eye Institute (NEI), the Federal Government’s lead agency for vision research, urges all people with diabetes to have an eye examination through dilated pupils at least once a year.

Blurred vision may occur when the macula – the part of the retina

that provides sharp, central vision –swells from the leaking fluid. This condition is called macular edema. If new vessels have grown on the surface of the retina, they can bleed into the eye and block vision. But, even in more advanced cases, the disease may progress a long way without symptoms. That is why regular eye examinations for people with diabetes are so important.

More than one third of those diagnosed with diabetes do not receive the recommended vision care and may be at risk for blindness. Because there are often no symptoms in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, your vision may not be affected until the disease becomes severe.

Once diagnosed with diabetes, schedule a complete dilated eye examination with your eye doctor at least once a year. Make an appointment

promptly if you experience blurred vision and floaters that:

• Affect only one eye

• Last more than a few days

• Are not associated with a change in blood sugar

In advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy, laser treatment has been shown to reduce the loss of vision. This surgery does not cure diabetic retinopathy, nor does it prevent future vision loss, especially if diabetes or blood pressure is not well controlled.

Diabetes can also affect your vision by causing cataracts and glaucoma. If you have diabetes, you may get cataracts at a younger age and your chances of developing glaucoma are doubled.

Early diagnosis of diabetes and effective control of blood sugar and hypertension through proper diet, exercise and medication can help reduce your risk of developing eye diseases associated with diabetes. Finding and treating the disease early, before it causes vision loss or blindness, is the best way to control diabetic eye disease. So, if you have diabetes, make sure you get a dilated eye examination at least once a year.

Building Muscle With EMSculpt What

EMSculpt is a revolutionary, non-invasive procedure that has gained popularity for its ability to help build muscle and sculpt the body. This cutting-edge technology uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to stimulate muscle contractions, offering a unique approach to muscle build-

You Need To Know

ing and fat reduction. How EMSculpt Works

EMSculpt works by delivering electromagnetic energy to targeted muscle groups, such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or arms. During a session, the energy induces supramaximal muscle contractions, which are much more intense than those achieved through traditional exercise. These contractions

stimulate muscle fibers to grow and strengthen while also promoting fat metabolism in the treated area.

A single EMSculpt session can produce the equivalent of 20,000 crunches or squats, making it an effective option for people looking to enhance muscle tone and definition. The procedure is non-invasive, requires no downtime, and is completed in approximately 30 minutes per session.

Benefits Of EMSculpt For Muscle Building

• Increased Muscle Mass: EMSculpt has been shown to increase muscle mass by up to 16% after a full treatment cycle, typically consisting of four sessions spaced a few days apart.

• Fat Reduction: In addition to building muscle, EMSculpt can reduce fat in the treated area by up to 19%, providing a dual benefit of toning and slimming.

• Convenience: EMSculpt is a quick procedure that can be done during a lunch break, with no need for recovery time or special preparation.

• Versatility: The treatment is suitable for various body areas, allowing for targeted muscle building and contouring.

Who Can Benefit From EMSculpt?

We understand first-hand how important it is to relieve that pain in the most non-invasive way possible using Cryotherapy.

Our services combine cutting-edge Targeted Cryotherapy techniques, expert staff, and a holistic approach to wellness that focuses on reducing pain and inflammation, improving physical performance, and promoting overall well-being for athletes and those looking to elevate their physical vitality.

EMSculpt is ideal for individuals who are close to their ideal body weight but want to enhance muscle definition or address stubborn fat deposits. It’s particularly popular among people looking to improve their fitness results or those recovering from injuries that limit traditional exercise.

Considerations

While EMSculpt is highly effective, it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Combining treatments with regular exercise and a balanced diet will optimize and maintain results. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as metal implants or pacemakers, may not be candidates for EMSculpt. EMSculpt offers a convenient and effective way to enhance muscle tone and boost confidence. If you’re looking for a modern solution to achieve your fitness goals, consult a certified provider to see if EMSculpt is right for you.

Ganglion Block (SGB)

system becomes overactive, individuals may experience persistent symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, and difficulty relaxing. SGB interrupts these signals, providing a “reset” to the system and reducing anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue in the United States, impacting approximately 40 million adults annually, or about 20% of the population. Anxiety can be debilitating and challenging to treat. Anxiety symptoms may include: irritability, poor concentration, worry, and feeling tense, nervous, or on edge all the time Due to individual variability in mental health conditions, standard anxiety treatments such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy may not be as effective for some who suffer from anxiety symptoms as others. This has prompted researchers and clinicians to explore adding alternative therapies, including the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) to standard treatment regimens. SGB has been used to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for over fifteen years and now demonstrates promising results for anxiety too.

SGB is a medical procedure that temporarily numbs a nerve cluster in the neck, the cervical sympathetic chain, which regulates the body’s fight-or-flight response. This nerve pathway transmits stress signals between the brain and the body. When this

Developed in the 1920s to treat pain, SGB has also proven effective in treating anxiety disorders. A study involving 285 patients demonstrated that SGB significantly reduced anxiety symptoms, as measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. Patients treated with a single SGB showed an average reduction of 7 points on the scale, while those undergoing bilateral treatments (on both sides of the neck) experienced a decrease of about 10 points. These results persisted at least one month after treatment, representing a substantial improvement well beyond the threshold for clinical significance.

The potential of SGB lies in its ability to directly address the physiological underpinnings of anxiety. By calming the overactive fight-or-flight system, SGB may augment (not replace) traditional treatments like therapy and medication. While not a cure, this innovative approach offers hope to individuals for whom standard treatments have been inadequate. Further research is necessary to confirm these findings and establish SGB as a standard option for anxiety treatment. However, the initial results are encouraging, providing a foundation for clinicians to consider SGB as part of a comprehensive approach to managing anxiety disorders.

Your colon plays a vital role in your overall health, acting as the body’s waste management system. A healthy diet and regular exercise not only keep your colon functioning smoothly but also reduce the risk of serious conditions like colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and chronic constipation. Here are some tips to help you support your colon health through lifestyle choices.

Focus On Fiber

Dietary fiber is essential for a healthy colon. Fiber helps to regulate bowel movements, reduce the risk of constipation, and promote a healthy gut microbiome. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Aim for 25-30 grams of fiber daily, and remember to increase your water intake as your fiber intake rises to avoid bloating or discomfort.

Stay Hydrated

Water is as crucial for your colon as fiber. Proper hydration helps keep your stool soft, making it easier to pass and reducing the risk of straining or developing hemorrhoids. Drink at least 8 cups of water daily, more if you’re physically active or live in a hot climate.

Limit Red and Processed Meats

Studies have shown that consuming large amounts of red and processed meats can increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Instead, opt for lean proteins like fish, poultry, and plant-based alternatives. Incorporate heart-healthy fats, such as those found in avocados and olive oil, to round out your diet.

Exercise Regularly

How a Healthy Diet and Exercise Support Colon Health

Physical activity is not just good for your heart and muscles—it benefits your colon too. Regular exercise stimulates the muscles of the colon, helping to prevent sluggishness and reducing the risk of constipation. Aim for at least

30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week, whether it’s walking, cycling, or yoga.

Watch For Warning Signs

While a healthy diet and exercise can do wonders for colon health, it’s essential to be aware of potential warning signs like persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal

pain. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, are crucial for early detection of issues, especially if you are over 45 or have a family history of colorectal cancer. By making simple dietary and lifestyle changes, you can maintain a healthy colon and reduce the risk of disease. Start today—your colon will thank you!

The Periodontal-Cardiovascular Connection

What You Need To Know

Your oral health and heart health are more connected than you might think. Research has established a strong link between periodontal (gum) disease and cardiovascular disease, suggesting that taking care of your gums isn’t just about keeping your smile healthy—it might also protect your heart.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also

known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums and surrounding tissues of the teeth. It begins as gingivitis (mild gum inflammation) and, if untreated, can progress to periodontitis, leading to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. This disease is caused by bacteria in dental plaque, which trigger inflammation in the gums.

How Does It Relate To

Cardiovascular Disease?

Cardiovascular disease includes conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, such as heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries). The connection between gum disease and cardiovascular disease is thought to stem from chronic inflammation.

When periodontal disease causes inflammation in the gums, harmful bacteria can enter the

bloodstream through the infected gum tissues. These bacteria and their byproducts may contribute to:

• Arterial inflammation: This can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

• Endothelial dysfunction: This occurs when the inner lining of blood vessels is damaged, impairing blood flow.

In fact, studies show that individuals with periodontal disease are more likely to have cardiovascular problems, making it clear that oral health is a vital component of overall health.

Protecting Your Gums and Heart

To reduce your risk of periodontal and cardiovascular disease:

• Visit your dentist regularly: Professional cleanings and early detection of gum disease are essential.

• Adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking.

Why It Matters

Understanding the periodontal-cardiovascular connection highlights the importance of treating gum disease as more than just a dental issue. By prioritizing your oral health, you’re also taking steps toward a healthier heart.

Don’t underestimate the power of a healthy smile—it might just save your life!

For questions about gum health or to schedule a dental checkup, contact your local periodontist today.

• Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and use an antimicrobial mouthwash.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, impacting blood sugar levels and circulation throughout the body. Among its many complications, foot health is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of diabetes management. Podiatry, the medical specialty focused on foot and ankle care, plays an essential role in helping individuals with diabetes maintain their mobility, prevent complications, and improve their overall quality of life.

Why Diabetes Affects Foot Health

Diabetes can lead to two major issues that directly impact foot health: neuropathy and poor circulation.

Neuropathy: High blood sugar levels can damage nerves over time, resulting in diabetic neuropathy. This condition reduces sensation in the feet, making it difficult to feel pain, pressure, or injuries. Without this natural warning system, minor cuts or blisters can go unnoticed and worsen.

Poor Circulation: Diabetes also affects blood flow, particularly to the extremities. Reduced circulation slows the healing process, increasing the risk of infections and ulcers.

These combined factors make foot care a top priority for individuals with diabetes.

The Role Of Podiatry In Diabetes Care

Podiatrists are uniquely trained to address the challenges that diabetes poses to foot health. Regular podiatric care is vital for preventing serious complications, including infections and amputations.

Routine Foot Exams: Podiatrists perform thorough foot evaluations to identify issues such as calluses, corns, or pressure points that may lead to ulcers. Early detection allows for prompt intervention.

Wound Care: For those with diabetic foot ulcers, podiatrists provide specialized wound care to promote healing and prevent infections. Advanced treatments, such as debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, may be recommended.

Custom Orthotics: Podiatrists

Diabetes and Podiatry

often prescribe custom orthotics to reduce pressure on vulnerable areas and improve foot alignment. Proper footwear is essential for preventing injuries and ensuring comfort.

Education: Podiatrists educate patients on daily foot care routines, such as inspecting feet for cuts or redness, keeping them clean and moisturized, and trimming toenails correctly.

Preventing Foot Complications In Diabetes

Prevention is key to maintaining healthy feet with diabetes. Here are some essential tips to minimize the risk of complications:

Inspect Your Feet Daily: Check for blisters, cuts, redness, or swelling. Use a mirror if needed.

Keep Your Feet Clean and

Dry: Wash your feet daily with mild soap and water, then dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.

Choose Proper Footwear: Wear shoes that fit well, offer support, and protect against injury. Avoid walking barefoot, even indoors.

Manage Your Blood Sugar: Maintaining optimal glucose levels supports healthy circulation and nerve function.

Prioritizing Mental Health Setting Goals and Practicing Self-Care In the New Year

The start of a new year often brings a sense of renewal and the motivation to

set goals. While it’s common to focus on physical health or career aspirations, taking care of one’s mental health is equally essential. Setting intentional,

Brain training allows your brain to see what it is doing and adjust and re-balance in response.

achievable goals that prioritize emotional well-being can lay the foundation for a healthier and more balanced life.

To begin, it’s important to set realistic and specific goals. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on manageable steps that promote progress. For example, someone who feels overwhelmed might commit to taking 10 minutes each day to practice mindfulness or deep breathing. These small, consistent actions can have a profound impact on reducing stress and improving emotional regulation.

Self-care is another critical component of maintaining mental health. Often misunderstood as indulgence, self-care is about meeting basic needs and finding practices that recharge your emotional reserves. This might include getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, or engaging in physical activity. For others, self-care could mean setting boundaries, saying “no” to overcommitments, or carving out time for hobbies that bring joy and fulfillment.

It’s also important to acknowledge and process emotions rather than

suppressing them. Grief, anxiety, or sadness may surface at different points during the year, and allowing oneself to sit with these feelings is an act of self-compassion. Journaling, talking with trusted friends, or seeking professional support can provide an outlet for these emotions and foster healing. Connection plays a pivotal role in mental health, especially when dealing with challenges like depression, loss, or major life transitions. Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Believe it or not, tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.

All-On-Four: One Full Arch Of Teeth, Four Dental Implants

To fully understand this remark-

A Reason To Smile Again

able technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place,

Missing Teeth or Tired of Wearing Dentures?

this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

It can be scary to get implants for the first time. Most of that fear is probably due to the uncertainty, so here is the step-by-step process for getting an All-On-Four dental implant.

First, your dentist will want to make sure your comfortable, so either local or general anesthesia will be administered.

Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

Next, they will begin the implantation process. This means they will

insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia.

How Do You Know If The All-On-Four Procedure Is The Right Option For You?

At your All-On-Four consultation, you’ll receive a 3D CT Scan. This scan will help determine if you need implants and assist your doctors in creating your treatment plan. So if you want to learn more about dental implants, simply schedule a consultation with an All-On-Four provider. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

Stillness For Heart Peace: When your brain slows down for prayer and meditation, many bodily processes are enhanced to lessen stress. They both help release feel-good chemicals (oxytocin) in the brain to lower reactivity from negative events and trauma.

Feel the Flow Of Each Season: Five-Element Acupuncture offers harmony and balance as each element (water, metal, wood, fire, earth) corresponds to each season. In winter, the water element reminds us to stay hydrated, rest more, and take hot Epsom salt baths to relax.

Volunteer With Other Hearts: Joining a meaningful cause helps build stronger social networks and lowers the risk of dying compared to non-volunteers, according to the AmeriCorps and U.S. Census Bureau (60.7 million people who volunteered from 9/2020 to 12/21).

Common Causes For Low Sperm Counts

Smoking

Studies have shown that smoking can lead to DNA damage in sperm. Such damage can reduce fertility and result in higher miscarriage rates. Smoking can also lead to erectile dysfunction.

Men who smoked more than 20

cigarettes per day can expect a 19% reduction in sperm concentration. Smoking is also associated with lower sperm volume and an increase in the number of morphological defects of the sperm cells.

Excessive Alcohol

Heavy drinking lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen levels. This results in reduced sperm production.

Studies have shown that heavy alcohol use over a long-time can be associated with testicular atrophy. Alcoholism is also associated with liver dysfunction it can decrease the ability to metabolize estrogens. Heavy alcohol use also shows significant disturbances and sperm parameters with even occasional azoospermia [absence of sperm].

Alcohol abuse and acute intoxication are also associated with sexual dysfunction, which is also associated

ADHD and Its Impact On Self-Esteem

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other executive function challenges affect millions of adults, influencing not just how they focus or manage tasks but also how they perceive themselves. For many, the challenges associated with ADHD can significantly impact self-esteem, especially during formative years and transitions into adulthood.

Navigating Misunderstandings

ADHD often results in behaviors like forgetfulness, impulsivity, or difficulty staying organized. In childhood, these traits may have been misinterpreted by adults as laziness or defiance. Unfortunately, the stigma doesn’t always stop in adulthood. Employers, peers, and even close friends may misunderstand these behaviors, perpetuating feelings of being “difficult” or inadequate.

Struggles In Academics and Work

Traditional school and workplace settings demand structure, time man-

agement, and attention to detail—areas where young adults with ADHD often struggle. Despite their creativity and problem-solving skills, they might feel like they’re constantly “falling behind.” These experiences can lead to self-doubt and reinforce negative beliefs like, “I’ll never be good enough.”

Sensitivity

To Feedback

Many adults with ADHD experience rejection sensitivity—an intense reaction to perceived criticism or failure. Negative feedback at work or in social situations can feel overwhelming, making them question their abilities and worth. Over time, this sensitivity can amplify low self-esteem and increase anxiety.

Breaking the Cycle

Low self-esteem and ADHD often create a cycle where feelings of inadequacy worsen ADHD symptoms, leading to more struggles and selfcriticism. Breaking this cycle requires intentional effort and support.

• Understanding ADHD: Education is crucial. Knowing that ADHD is a neu-

Diabetes and the Eye

More than 38 million American adults are living with diabetes or prediabetes. An additional 8 million are unaware that they have it. Diabetic eye disease includes retinopathy, a disease of the small blood vessels in the light-sensitive layer of the eye called the retina. This can cause visual loss, and the risk increases the longer the disease is present. Having diabetes makes it more likely to also develop cataracts or open-angle glaucoma. Because many people may not have any symptoms, it is important to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam every year.

About Lynda Dean-Duru

Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru pursues pediatric dentistry with a passion rooted in her fascinating personal story.

For Doctor Lynda, the pathway to dentistry started during her own childhood experience with a dentist’s impact in her native Nigeria. As the eldest of nine children (including seven brothers), she witnessed a total transformation in the health of one of her little brothers after his aches and pains were totally resolved under the care of a well-trained dentist. As a result of this transformative experience, young Lynda determined to extend that kind of care to others as her life’s calling. She went on to earn her dentistry degree from the University of Benin, her General Practice residency from Howard University Hospital, her Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Training from Children’s National Medical Center, Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and her Fellowship Laser Certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry.

Doctor Lynda has undertaken much continuing education in Orthodontic training and is a fellow of the United States Dental Institute and a member of the prestigious Gnathos education group in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a certification in Oral Myology from the International Association of Oral Myology (IAOM). She has completed levels 1 and 2 of the Advanced Light force functionals (ALF) therapy, ALF Interface Academy Foundations, Genesis, and other courses.

She also has a special interest in treatment that focuses on infants’ breastfeeding and prevention of sleep apnea in children.

She is a member of numerous professional and civic associations and provides tens of thousands of dollars in pro bono screenings and procedures along with other community service in Northern Virginia every year.

About Krystle Dean-Duru

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry.

It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult.

I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology. I received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, New York, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board certified, I am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams!

“Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

Chinese Medicine For Chronic Low Back Pain

Lower back pain affects a significant majority of adults in the United States, with approximately four out of five experiencing this discomfort at some stage of their lives. Typically, back pain can be categorized as acute,

lasting from a few days to a few weeks, or chronic, persisting for more than three months. While various factors can contribute to lower back pain, the primary culprits often include muscle strain and degenerative disc disease. In the context of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), lower back pain can be attributed to external influences such as severe weather conditions, injuries, and

excessive sexual activity. According to TCM theory, these factors can lead to a blockage of Qi and blood, believed to be the root cause of lower back pain if concentrated in the lower back region. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a range of practices, including Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, scrapping, tuina, qi-gong, and specific exercises, with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine as key components.

The Role of Acupuncture in Managing Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain often hampers daily activities and stands as the second most common reason for physician consultations. Extensive utilization of acupuncture for treating lower back pain has been noted in previous studies. A meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in managing lower back pain by examining 33 randomized, controlled trials. These trials were categorized based on acute or chronic pain, the style of acupuncture used, and the control groups involved.

The analysis indicated that, as a primary outcome for relieving chronic pain in the short term, acupuncture proved significantly more effective than sham treatment or no additional intervention. Consequently, the study inferred that acupuncture could effectively alleviate chronic lower back pain.

Frequency and Safety Of Acupuncture Sessions

The number of acupuncture sessions required depends on the nature of the back pain. Generally, acute back pain might necessitate 1-3 sessions, while chronic back pain may require 6-16 sessions for effective management. For optimal treatment outcomes, a twice-weekly session frequency is recommended. Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment. There can be occasional side effects such as dizziness, local internal bleeding, dermatitis, nerve damage, or increased pain.

Steps To Preventing Diabetes

More than 24 million Americans have diabetes; of those, about six million don’t know they have the disease. This difficult disease, once called adult-onset diabetes, is striking an ever-growing number of adults. Even more alarming, it’s now beginning to show up in obese teenagers and children.

Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. About nine cases in 10 could be avoided by taking several simple steps: keeping weight under

control, exercising more, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking.

Weight Control

Having excess weight is the single most important cause of type 2 diabetes. Being overweight increases one’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes seven-fold. Being obese makes you 20-40 times more likely to develop diabetes than someone with a healthy weight.

Losing weight can help if your weight is above the healthy-weight range. Losing 7-10% of your current weight can cut your chances of developing type 2 diabetes in half.

Active Lifestyle

Inactivity promotes type 2 diabetes. Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. This puts less stress on your insulin-making cells. Long bouts of hot, sweaty exercise aren’t necessary to reap this benefit. Walking briskly for a half hour every

Meet Deborah Mallu, DVM, CVA, MAc

I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was five years old. At 14, I began working in veterinary clinics, and caring for pets has been my lifelong passion. I earned my DVM from The Ohio State University in 1977. After ten years in clinical practice, I sought a new approach to pet health, discovering veterinary acupuncture in 1988, and became certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, opening the door to holistic medicine.

In 1993, I sold my practice and moved to Sedona, AZ, embarking on a spiritual journey where I became a Tibetan Buddhist nun from 2002 to 2023. I believe in the equality of all life and aim to relieve suffering. In 1994, I pursued Energy Healing and completed a self-healing journey.

After volunteering during Hurricane Katrina, I worked with Tara’s Babies Animal Sanctuary and Garuda Aviary Parrot Sanctuary. In 2006, I returned to Maryland, joining Veterinary Holistic Care, and later co-founded Holistic Veterinary Healing in 2013. I earned my Master’s in Human Acupuncture in 2010, treating both hu man and animal patients until 2016, when I dedicated myself to animal care after the passing of my partner, Dr. Kitty Raichura. I am certified in Medical Ozone Therapy and a Fear Free Practitioner. I live in Germantown with my two dogs, Bodhi and Jack, and enjoy time with friends, family, and my pets.

Meet Ying Ngo, DVM, CVA

I’ve always had a passion for medicine, growing up with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As a child, my dad taught me Gua Sha and acupressure to help with his back pain, sparking my interest in various healing modalities. Though I loved animals, I initially thought medical school was the only path to practice medicine. Before discovering veterinary medicine, I worked in acupuncture clinics, shadowed at hospitals, volunteered with the Red Cross at Walter Reed, and conducted research at UMD and the FDA.

In 2015, I was introduced to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) by Dr. Allison Marshall, and I immediately knew I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. After two years of shadowing veterinary acupuncturists and a lab animal medicine clinician, I earned a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 and attended the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM).

I’ve developed a strong interest in integrative medicine, surgery, pathology, and exotics. I also worked in the Clinical Pathology lab and participated in research at VMCVM. In 2020, I began my acupuncture (CVA) training with Chi University and completed my DVM in 2021. My goal is to combine holistic and conventional medicine to provide the best care for animals.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, playing golf, spoiling my pet rat, and performing lion dances with my troupe, Choy Wun, especially during Lunar New Year.

Meet Susan Jones, DVM, CVA

My journey in veterinary medicine began at age 5 when I received a kitten, only to lose her in a tragic accident. This inspired me to pursue a career in saving pets. I attended veterinary summer programs at Tuskegee University and Michigan State, earned my Biology degree from UMBC in 2003, and graduated from TUSVM in 2007.

I worked in Las Vegas for three years, gaining experience in routine care, emergency medicine, surgery, and dentistry. My interest in holistic medicine grew after learning about Osteopathy, which led to various trainings, though I could only apply them in limited ways in general practice.

For the past 10 years, I’ve balanced raising two kids with working in general practice, honing my skills in internal medicine, surgery, and dentistry. Four years ago, I began pursuing my goal of becoming an acupuncturist. I’ve since obtained Level II Reiki attunement and completed advanced training in Food Therapy, Acupuncture, and Herbal Medicine at Chi University. I’m now a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, with plans to further my certifications in holistic therapies.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing board games with my kids, watching soccer, listening to podcasts, and bingewatching shows with my husband.

Upper Arm Liposuction / Upper Arm Lift

Many patients who have been successful in their weight loss journey, once the weight is gone, are disappointed to find that their upper arms do not look the way they expected. Weight loss is a major contributing factor to sagging excess skin on your upper arm. When you gain weight, the skin stretches to accommodate more fat. Unfortunately, skin doesn’t contract as easily as it expands. Loose

skin and remaining pockets of fat on the upper arm are very common after weight loss.

An Arm lift or Upper Arm Liposuction are both surgical procedures that can improve the appearance of your upper arms; however, they have different focuses and approaches.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, will tighten, lift, and smooth the skin and tis-

sues of your arm for a more sleek and sculpted shape. The focus is on removing the excess sagging skin and attached fat to improve both the upper arm size and contour. An arm lift has a longer incision extending from the underarm to the elbow.

Arm Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure for removing pockets of fat from the upper arm. It requires few,

smaller incisions and doesn’t tighten the skin.

In many cases, both procedures are performed together for the best results. An arm lift can be helpful for people who have lost a significant amount of weight and whose skin can’t contract over their smaller arms. Arm liposuction effectively removes fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

The month of February has been nominated Healthy Heart Month. Why February? Could it be because it’s the month of Valentine’s Day, where the symbol is the red heart? Or could it have something to do with romance, chocolates and wine?

Ironically, romance, chocolates and wine are good for the heart too for various reasons, so why don’t we celebrate Valentine’s Day all month instead of heart disease? And why is it that heart disease plagues women more so than men?

The American Heart Association created the Go Red for Women Campaign in 2003 to help increase the awareness of women’s heart disease and studies. The month of February has been designated Healthy Heart month to focus on heart studies, check-ups and tests to learn more on preventing heart disease and heart attacks. However, the most common cause of death in women is still heart disease.

So let’s talk about some of the things that can be done to help prevent heart disease in both men and women. This list is called the “Simple Seven” and it is very simple to maintain for your heart’s sake.

Because the heart is a muscle, if these conditions are detected in time, they can possibly be prevented with daily physical activity, which increases your length and quality of life.

If you get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day, five times per week, you can almost guarantee an improvement. Learn to control your cholesterol and give your arteries a break by allowing them to stay

clear of plague build up.

Choose healthy foods that are fueled with vitamins and minerals that our bodies use to make new cells and create the energy we need to thrive and fight diseases. Manage your blood pressure and keep it within healthy ranges so you can reduce the strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys, which keeps you healthier longer.

If you’re overweight, you can reduce your risk for heart disease by successfully losing weight and keeping it off; especially if it is in your mid-section as this is the danger zone for auto-immune diseases.

Diabetes appears when your body is unable to create insulin to carry your food energy into your cells. This is a good indication that your blood sugar levels are too high

and need to be managed. And last but not least, smoking damages your entire circulatory system, and increases your risk for coronary heart disease, hardened arteries, aneurysm and blood clots.

Don’t ignore the signs as they can be different in men and women. Get your check-up. Eat healthy and stay active.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Having an unhealthy diet and a high BMI has been associated with reduced sperm quality. Use of illicit drugs as well as psychological stress further compound the abnormal parameters noted in some patients. The negative impact can be overcome by behavior modification.

Systemic Illness

Influenza may affect sperm quality and integrity of sperm DNA. Febrile episodes from a systemic illness may also reduce sperm concentration, morphology, and motility. Patients who

have systemic lupus can have abnormal sperm development mainly due to the presence of anti-sperm antibodies.

Genetic Disorders

Genetic causes of abnormal sperm count include Klinefelter’s syndrome. The presence of the cystic fibrosis gene mutation is also associated with abnormal semen parameters. Y chromosome microdilution can result in azoospermia or lack of sperm.

Other causes include Noonan syndrome. Noonan syndrome presents with congenital problems and or kidney problems. Common findings include undescended testes.

• Choose good fats instead of bad fats.

• Limit red meat and avoid processed meat; choose nuts, whole grains, poultry, or fish instead.

Smoking Cessation

Since we know, smokers are roughly 50% more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers, and heavy smokers have an even higher risk. Quitting would be beneficial and decrease the risk of type two diabetes. The bottom line to preventing type 2 diabetes is to stay lean and stay active.

Sleep Disorders and Holistic Health

Exploring Oxygen Therapy, Red Light Therapy, and Salt Caves

Sleep is the foundation of health and wellness, yet millions of people struggle with sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Chronic sleep deprivation affects mental and physical health, leading to fatigue, impaired concentra-

tion, and a higher risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes. While conventional treatments like medication and CPAP machines are widely used, holistic approaches are gaining traction for their ability to improve sleep quality by addressing underlying stress and promoting relaxation.

Oxygen Therapy & Sleep Health

Oxygen therapy, commonly used

for

its clinical use, oxygen therapy supports relaxation by improving cellular oxygenation, which promotes better circulation and energy levels. Regular sessions can enhance overall sleep quality, especially for those who experience fragmented sleep due to

poor breathing patterns.

Red Light Therapy For Stress Relief and Better Sleep

Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses low wavelengths of light to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. By stimulating melatonin production—the hormone responsible for regulating sleep—red light helps the body transition into a restful state. Additionally, red light therapy reduces inflammation and muscle tension, common culprits of poor sleep. Many individuals report feeling calmer and more refreshed after consistent sessions, making it a valuable tool for those battling insomnia or stress-induced sleep disturbances.

Salt

Caves: A Natural Remedy For Better Sleep

Salt caves, also known as halotherapy, offer a serene environment where individuals breathe in microscopic salt particles. This therapy is known for its respiratory benefits, helping to clear airways and reduce symptoms of asthma and allergies, which can disrupt sleep. The calming atmosphere of a salt cave promotes deep relaxation, lowering stress levels and improving sleep patterns. The negative ions in the salt are believed to enhance mood and boost serotonin, further contributing to restful sleep.

Holistic Health and Sleep Quality

Sleep and overall wellness are deeply interconnected. Stress, poor circulation, and inflammation can all disrupt sleep, but therapies like oxygen, red light, and salt caves offer natural, supportive solutions. By reducing stress, improving respiratory function, and fostering relaxation, these holistic treatments promote better sleep and overall health, helping individuals wake up refreshed and ready to face the day.

How to Pursue Low- or No-Cost CDA Certification In Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia

Submitted by ScholarsHub.net

The Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential is a nationally recognized certification in early childhood education. Residents of Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia can often access subsidized or fully covered training and assessment, provided they meet specific requirements.

Why Earn a CDA?

• Career Growth: Increase pay and leadership opportunities in child care centers

• Professional Recognition: Demonstrate expertise in child development

• Enhanced Skills: Improve classroom management and teaching strategies

Washington, DC

Southeast Children’s Fund (SCF) offers a 120-hour CDA training program with portfolio support for DC residents and those employed in DClicensed childcare facilities, subject to eligibility criteria and funding availability. CentroNía Institute also provides CDA coursework in multiple

languages, along with portfolio assistance for individuals who qualify.

Maryland

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) reimburses application fees, renewal fees, and CDA Competency Standards books for registered family child care providers and licensed child care center employees. ChildCareEd offers self-paced training, often eligible for MSDE reimbursement, allowing participants to keep out-of-pocket costs low.

Virginia

Care Courses is recognized by the Council for Professional Recognition as meeting formal CDA education requirements and offers online training for Virginia childcare professionals. According to cumulative data from the Council, thousands of CDA Credentials have been awarded in Virginia over the years. SafeGard Classes Online and Virginia Wesleyan University also offer CDA preparation programs suited to Virginia’s licensing and reim-

bursement pathways.

Key Considerations

Free or subsidized programs typically require specific eligibility criteria, such as residency and employment in a licensed facility. The Council for Professional Recognition charges an assessment fee of around $425, which may be reimbursed by certain state programs.

Getting Started

• Verify eligibility for state-specific grants or reimbursements.

• Gather required documentation for funding applications.

• Choose a training format (online or in-person).

• Complete the mandatory 120 hours of training.

• Develop a professional portfolio.

• Schedule and complete the final assessment.

By leveraging the resources offered in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, early childhood educators can significantly reduce the cost of earning their CDA Credential while enhancing their professional skills.
