We have always been an organisation that ‘walks the walk’ of enterprise and last year that entrepreneurial spirit truly came to the fore.

At a time when young people will be disproportionally impacted by the effects of the global pandemic, our team stepped up and worked with a collaborative and creative mindset that has seen us adapt and thrive. We are now well-placed for 2021 and beyond.

Our agile approach has seen us accelerate our strategic plan ‘Enterprise for All’, with some significant achievements across the breadth of our activity. These include a new website, a new digital learning platform, new facilities at Rouken Glen in collaboration with Cosgrove Care, a re-branded and college-wide Bridge 2 Business Programme, and the credit rating of our Team Programme for learners with additional support needs.

Supporting 311 students achieve the first ever SCQF level 6 qualification for enterprise is another stand-out success, particularly given that this was achieved during school closures.

All the above would not have been possible without the strong backing of the Scottish Government, the Scottish Funding Council, and the huge variety of supporters from the private, public, and third sectors.

I would also like to pay an enormous tribute to our volunteers, including our Board of Directors, who have gone the extra mile this year – and of course a massive thank you to our wonderful staff team.

We believe that the potential of Scotland’s young people is unlimited Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) inspires young people to learn and succeed through enterprise. Annually, YES supports thousands of young people across Scotland from all backgrounds to develop business knowledge and entrepreneurial and employability skills.

The YES team is supported by over 600 volunteers and the Scottish business community. We are united around the mission to inspire and equip all young people to learn, develop and reach their full potential through enterprise.

YES creates opportunities to fulfil the potential of all young people in Scotland. YES’s ambitious vision for Scotland is a country where all young people can build a rewarding future – no matter where they start their journey.

We work annually with around 15,000 young people who engage in over 200,000 learning hours each year.

2020-21 s t h g i l h g i H Despite the global circumstances, we responded quickly to the Covid-19 crisis to ensure that all young people across Scotland had access to quality enterprise education resources and experiences.

Schools s e m m a r g Pro To offer our support during school closures, we have adapted our programmes to include virtual options and have recruited four new staff for the schools team to enable the most vulnerable young people in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to access enterprise and employability learning opportunities.

E-sgoil

YES and Scotland’s Enterprising Schools (SES) were invited to partner with e-Sgoil, a national resource which provides resources and lessons to young people who are working at home due to Covid-19, to deliver a series of Innovation & Enterprise activities. We supported delivery of a series of 8 weekly lessons as part of ‘DYW Live’, the exciting new work-related learning national offer.

Lockdown Learning

YES, SES and a number of other partners, collaborated to offer fortnightly challenges to pupils during lockdown via our website and teachers’ own online classrooms. From April through to June, we released 6 Enterprise Challenges.

16 schools participated from 11 Local Authorities. Every pupil was given a certificate of participation along with personalised feedback and next steps.

Digital Challenge

YES and SES delivered the first ever schools ‘Digital Enterprise Challenge’, which went live in November. 33 schools signed up from across 17 local authorities.

3 schools were awarded prizes of digital technology, vouchers and funding towards their enterprise strategy thanks to support from the Scottish Tech Army.

Tenner and Fiver Challenge

Over 200 young people from across Scotland were given either £10 or £5 to get a business idea off the ground and make as much profit as they can.

They competed against other schools across the UK, whilst learning practical enterprise and finance skills.

Inventors Challenge

We supported over 400 P5-P7’s to take part in our one-day introductory enterprise programme which uses Scottish inventors to challenge young people to design and create their own futuristic invention and then present it to others.

High Street Challenge

We supported 80 young people to take part in this one-day, creative enterprise project for Secondary School pupils encouraging participants to generate original ideas for a High Street shop.

Young people also consider how their business could make a wider community contribution.

Learn to Earn

We launched this new one-day programme for Secondary School pupils which explores concepts of success, independence and employment and shows the importance of education in preparing for the future.

Pathways to Enterprise

As soon as schools reopened in August, we restarted delivery of Pathways, our practical programme for young people facing most barriers to enterprise, at the YES Rouken Glen Training Centre.

We worked closely this year with Cosgrove Care to provide Pathways activities for young people with additional learning support needs. The unique learning environment suited this group well and was key to ensuring all participants could succeed.

Circular Economy Challenge

A practical primary school programme to inspire today’s entrepreneurial young minds for the economy of tomorrow. To date: •450 Circular business ideas have been created by young people •32 Scottish circular businesses have supported the programme

Responding quickly to the closure of schools, the Company Programme regional finals converted almost overnight to virtual events ensuring that the young people involved could still celebrate their success and achievements.

Case Study

This year’s Scottish Company of the Year was Timescape from Stirling High School in Forth Valley. They designed a conservation-themed escape room to raise awareness of pressing sustainability and environmental issues, using their experience of organising past similar events in their school to deliver a highquality service.

Though facing challenges along the way, all the students agreed that “it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…which allows you to gain transferable [and] entrepreneurial skills, which is what makes Young Enterprise so unique.”

They used these skills to come in first place for Scotland and also gain a qualification.

Accreditation

Supported by Glasgow Kelvin College, the Company Programme was accredited as an SCQF Level 6 qualification worth 26-30 credit points.

•360 students achieved Unit 1 and 311 achieved the qualification, representing a pass rate of 86%.

•Students from 46 schools in 14 of our 17 Scottish regions took part, representing 34% of all schools participating in the programme (136).

•91% of teachers surveyed said they were interested in the accreditation for 2020/21, and 70% said they would recommend the accreditation to other schools.

•Overall, 86% of teachers surveyed would recommend the Company Programme to colleagues.

Team e m m a r g o r P During this last year we had the exciting launch of our Team Programme, a new year-long enterprise programme designed for students with additional support needs. This new programme, now credit rated at an SCQF Level 3, helps to further our mission of #EnterpriseForAll.

Case Study

•The Team Programme, supported by Glasgow Kelvin College, was accredited as an SCQF Level 3 qualification worth 15 credit points. All schools participating in the Team Programme in 2020/21 are taking part in the qualification as well.

The team developed their independence and employability skills while running their business as a social enterprise that promoted positive mental health throughout the college.

•Four student companies from across Scotland took part in the Team Programme, representing 50 students at both secondary level and in further education.

•86% of teachers agreed that Team Programme increased the confidence of students”

A group of nine learners from the Faculty of Supported Learning in the New College Lanarkshire students launched The Wee Shop, selling student essentials to their classmates.

One of their lecturers said: “[The students] have really blossomed into confident individuals in their time at college and it is a great opportunity for them to develop their employability and entrepreneurial skills in preparation for the future.”

Financial education is a planned programme of study that equips young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their money well. It ensures learners grow to understand their attitude to risk, and become aware of their own behaviour and emotions when making financial decisions through real-life scenarios.

We launched Young Money in Scotland for the first time – making financial education a key part of the YES offering to Scottish schools and colleges.

•We ran the first Scottish Centres of Financial Excellence Programme – which recognises and supports schools to successfully deliver sustainable financial education in Crosshouse Primary in East Kilbride and St Martha’s Primary in Glasgow. Both schools are now moving along apace in their journey to excellence.

•We secured funding from MaPS and Virgin to create a new online support portal which will allow us to provide comprehensive financial education learning tools and resources for practitioners. This will boost young people’s skills in financial literacy.

•We ran a series of focus groups with Scottish educators and Financial Services experts to design the Your Money Matters – MaPS and Martin Lewis funded textbook, which will be sent free to all Scottish schools in March 2021.

Launch it Fest

Bridge 2 Business Bridge 2 Business offers a range of services to inspire, connect & support FE college students into and through enterprise. Our programme offers students aged 18-30 first hand opportunities to experience what enterprise is, what it can do for them in terms of starting up a business, developing their skills and for employability.

This year, B2B went virtual for the first time with an online launch for students and staff.

Our Launch-It Fest in October showcased the B2B rebrand and new blended learning offering, making sure enterprise education was still accessible to all college students despite social distancing restrictions.

Global Entrepreneurship Week

We hosted 6 interviews with young global entrepreneurs to inspire Scottish students, including Alan Mahon of Brewgooder and Aimee Ritchee of S’Wheat Bottle.

#Female Boss

Working with the Royal Bank of Scotland, we launched the #FemaleBoss programme to close the gender gap in business and to inspire, empower, and support female students aged 18-30 years old into enterprise.

International Mobilities

Currently 80 students and staff from within the further education sector have been supported to get involved in life changing enterprise education experiences overseas.

Case Study - Craig Reid, Forth Valley College During his time at Forth Valley College, graphic design student Craig was supported by the Bridge 2 Business team and took part in an entrepreneurial trip to Holland.

He used his experience as part of a four strong FVC student delegation which YES took on a fact finding trip to Holland in October 2019, as inspiration for the design.

Craig, said: “The trip itself was an entrepreneurial journey for those looking to build a business or turn their idea into something more than pen on paper. I was incredibly keen to go on this trip as it was something outside of my comfort zone that I had never done beforehand and I felt I could learn a lot of new skills as well as developing my existing ones.”

Craig used his experiences on the trip to develop his creative skills and as inspiration for the re-brand of the Bridge 2 Business Programme.

“I feel incredibly proud of the work I have done and the feedback has been very positive. It almost feels surreal going from being on the programme to having re-branded their programme. It feels really satisfying seeing your work online being used by a company, this has been my greatest accomplishment so far as a Graphic Designer.”

Craig graduated from Forth Valley’s Stirling Campus in June 2020 and is now working with Young Enterprise Scotland as a Digital Communications Executive.
