A negative trend I see with many new entrepreneurs is that their business goals change based on what appears to be popular at the time. For example, an entrepreneur in retail may focus on the current trend in clothing instead of focusing on the retail needs of a particular demographic. A quick brainstorm could reveal a viable need, like there honestly not being enough niche clothing lines for women and LGBTQ persons. A clothing line focused on matching the needs of people in the non-dominant society will have a better path to victory and profit. The vision will be consistent, and your focus then becomes finding new ways to produce amazing clothing at a low cost and have a progressive marketing campaign.

Although the economy may go up and down, and the spending capacity of your clients my change, the consistency of your brand will determine your level of success. For longevity in business it is extremely important to stay the course and not jump around from one proverbial ship to the next.

It’s the combined passion of music, song and photography that brought Stan full circle to what he dubs as his true calling. A decision to cross the bridge to “The City” and a chance meeting with a music producer began a thirty-year music career. And while his career was full of notable successes, his hobby – photography - was always with him.

Why Voter Turnout Is Down As a naive high schooler, I thought I knew everything I needed to know about our government. I mean, I passed US History, knew all about our three branches of government and about my right to vote. Still, I found it difficult to follow political debates because I didn’t know poltical jargon. I didn’t know much about local government and I didn’t understand the impact of voting.

I decided to further learn about voting by familiarizing myself with voting rules and the voter turnout results of previous elections in order to better understand the impact of “voting power”.

‘Black Barbie’: in review Even after 15 years, Safi A. Thomas, Artistic Director of Hip Hop Dance Conservatory (H+) “Black Barbie: A Nation Reborn” proves social issues that have plagued our society over a decade ago still remain prevalent and, most importantly, unresolved.

For three consecutive nights, HDCNY took over Teatro Latea in Brooklyn.

Featuring a hybrid of “My Ghetto Pop Life”, ‘Black Barbie’ results in a thought-provoking and messagedriven performance. The repertory piece recorded five performances within one week, including a double performance on Saturday, the company’s final summer performance of 2018.

Upon entry into Teatro Latea, partons were quickly immersed into the dimly lit dystopic world of Hope City. The newcomers were greeted

by Black Barbie Specialist, Wisdom, who insisted all prospective citizens (patrons) turn off their mobile devices to prevent them from being tracked. Much like its name, ‘Hope City’, intends to protect whomever enters into their realm and hopes for a prosperous future through

the earthly descendance of the messianic figure, Black Barbie.

The hybrid repertory performance presents major thematic elements through the dream sequences of a young interracial couple aspiring to be Hip Hop dancers: Laurel and Anthony. Scene One introduces the audience to their troubled relationship through a heated argument between the couple and Laurel’s ‘friend’. The couple argues about their economic instability and the persistent imbalance of responsibilities. The argument concludes and the lovers fall asleep.

Millennial Shaman

F

rom rags to riches, to Gucci linens, and then an orange jumpsuit in a federal prison, millennials tend to have the reputation of being sunder achieving and lazy. However, that would be hard to say about C.E.O of Turing Pharmaceuticals, Martin Shkreli.

Shkreli who was brought up in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn, a child of 4 from working class Albanian and Croatian immigrant parents who supported their children with doorman and janitor salaries who hustled his way into an internship at a hedge fund at the tender age of 17.

Martin Shkreli was ambitious with an exceptional intellect and business acumen. His drive was only matched by the hate and infamy that was eventually bestowed upon him. Shrekli’s face would come to represent the mounting public disdain the pharmaceutical industry had been acquiring. Shkreli was accused of exploiting HIV patients across the United States. He held the pharmaceutical rights to Daraprim, a life-saving drug and exponentially inflated its price, making it unattainable to virtually everyone who needed it. Was Shkreli breaking the rules or was he just playing the game?

Under any circumstances, taking on what must have felt like the lion’s share, of all the hate the pharmaceutical industry has garnered through the last decade or two, must be a pretty taxing experience. There are few people who have earned that much hate.

securities fraud on March 9th, 2018, lost $10.4 million in relation to his former drug company, Retrophin, by way of two hedge funds he ran through the business. He was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison and had almost $7.4 million of his assets seized, including a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album valued at $2 million. Shkreli has been painted as the physical manifestation of everything wrong with the pharmaceutical industry, as well as the legislation and policies that enable them. Although Medicare drug benefit program, also prohibits the government for negotiating cheaper prices on behalf of the U.S. population, this has lead to heavy medication price hikes, since the program’s inception in the United States.

The price hike of Daraprim from any standard is exorbitant but Shkreli argued in a September 2015 Bloomberg TV interview, “These days, in modern pharmaceuticals, cancer drugs can cost $100,000 or more, rare disease drugs can cost half a million dollars. Daraprim is still under-priced, relative to its peers.” Shkreli has a point when comparing other high end priced medications, there is a noticeable disparity, between the price points of Daraprim, which would cost about $22,500 for a 30 day supply, and drugs like Harvoni, a hepatitis C treatment, which is priced at $74,000.00 for a 30 day supply, or Bexarotene, a T-cell lymphoma treatment, which costs $49,800.00 for a 30 day supply.

Most companies justify the price points of their treatments, through the argued price points of research and development. It would be optimistic to assume, that most pharmaceutical companies would return the majority of their profits into developing and researching new cures, and treatments. Although that is not the reality according to a

July 2017 article in the Washington post, that states, “Big Pharma” or big pharmaceutical companies, spent over $3 billion in consumer marketing and $24 billion marketing directly to healthcare professionals.”

The article goes on to state that R&D at most companies account for about 15% on average, while about 65% of the budget is dedicated to advertising and marketing.

This is where Shkreli deviates from the pack. In a February 2016 Vanity Fair feature, on Martin Shkreli, Shkreli stated, “Turing will spend some 60 to 70 percent of its revenues on research, in contrast to the 15 percent or so spent by big pharmaceutical companies (and the 3 percent spent by Valeant).” Later on in the same article when the President of Turing Eliseo Salinas was asked by Vanity Fair how she felt about Shkreli she stated, “I’ve been reporting to C.E.O.’s for the last 11 years,” he stated. “I’ve had a good relationship with all of them, but with Martin, I don’t have to explain anything. He just picks it up.” He added, “People obsess about Martin and his persona, but what I see is a very young entrepreneur who wants to be successful through primary research, not through commercial manipulation. He is putting his money where his words are.

Ultimately at a minimum, we will have to wait until Shkreli serves his sentence. Before Shkreli can prove what he said about developing a Pharmaceutical company that is actually dedicated to using the majority of their budget to research new cures and treatments, or for him to prove that even within the context of the Pharmaceutical industry, that as unfair the reputation he developed may have been, it is still an accurate one.

nce a universal symbol of degenerate counterculture, marijuana has now be come a headlining issue everywhere from science and medicine - to politics.

Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in Colorado in late 2012 and the recorded $247 million collected by the state government in 2017, the discussions surrounding the economic influence of marijuana as made a 180-degree shift. Where the American government and legislature once made provision to discourage and prevent black market revenue, it now endeavors to calculate and reap the benefits of the regulated and taxed sale of marijuana throughout the United States.

While prohibition and restrictions of cannabis in the United States have been in existence since the 1920’s, the substance wasn’t officially outlawed until the CSA (Controlled Substance Act) of 1970. Since then, legislation to regulate, decriminalize and legalize the medical and recreational use of the substance has oscillated through the legal system including House Joint Resolution 117, United States vs. Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative and The Cole Memorandum.

In its wake a legacy of death, injustice and scandal persists. The effects of legislature on minorities and underprivileged communities have created national and international backlash as well as uniformed efforts to repeal and equalize sentencing disparages, targeting and education in America.

Accusations of the American government intentionally creating a permanent underclass have been fueled by a sharp increase in arrest rates that disproportionately targeted African Americans. John Ehrlichman, aide to Richard Nixon, is quoted as saying the former President used the ‘War On Drugs to criminalize and disrupt black and hippie communities and their leaders”.

A 126% increase in arrests after 1980 for drug related offenses, spawned the development of privatization and the for- profit prison industry.

The Dept. of Justice reported that from 1990 through 2000 this increase accounted for nearly 35% of minority inmates (Blacks and Hispanics) and mass deportations. Statistics from 1998 showed that African Americans

comprised 74% of people sent to prison for drug related crimes.

These statistics are primarily due to sentencing disparities that were as high as 100:1 for offenses related to crack cocaine as opposed to its powder form.

Because crack was primarily found in impoverished and inner city minority communities, these and other keynote state legislation culminated in controversial polices such as “stop and frisk” and “three strikes”. The first president to make any effort to curtail this biased campaign was Barack Obama when he signed the Fair Sentencing Act in August 2010.

The legalization of marijuana has gone a long way in reversing many of the injustices that plagued the “War On Drugs”. Cities like San Diego and San Francisco are on the forefront of the movement to erase thousands of marijuana convictions and release inmates who were incarcerated for felonious marijuana charges.

The estimated total of Americans serving time in penal institutions numbers over 1.5 million and the prospective number of inmates that would remain after purging the system of marijuana related offenders is reduced to below 700,000 inmates. The yearly estimate for the maintenance of prisoners is about $68 billion and it is projected that an average of $11.3 billion per year would be saved with the release of marijuana related offenders alone, thus reducing the overall number of non-violent offenders in the prison system and making room for more violent offenders. The release of these offenders would also provide the system with more resources to maintain the penal system, introduce drug treatment education and transitional rehabilitation.

Other progressive actions being implemented and studied include programs that set aside a number of marijuana sales permits for minorities convicted of specific related crimes and requires that

some stores be opened in low income communities.

The counter-culture and social revolutions surrounding cannabis have finally begun to see the fruits of their labor. The collective consciousness of the country and the world is beginning to embrace the cannabis lifestyle as mainstream. From the protests and hippie movements of the 60’s and 70’s - to the progressive decriminalization of cannabis and now the prospect of a state-specific and nationwide legalization of the substance, marijuana isn’t just a “dirty hippie” drug anymore. As the use of marijuana has spawned well beyond just recreational use and is now sought by cancer patients and wellness enthusiast alike for the purpose of pain managament.

irca 2014, I gained the opportunity to produce original television shows at Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) in New York City, realizing the dream of producing talk shows centered on self-help topics that could help ethnic communities. While in MNN production school, I met my future media mentor Bonnie Bruderer, a life coach from California looking to produce a talk show that would further her life coaching business and acting pursuits. We hit it off in training and she asked me to be the producer on her show called the “Ask Bon Bon Show.”

Little did I know, my experience with Bonnie would change the way that I viewed media and my role in it.

This process was fast-paced and exciting. As much as we wanted to continue talking to our guests, we had to rush one out to get another interviewee in. This taught me the value of studio time and how you

Knowing that I wanted to produce a show that would have a lasting impact on my community, I began to formulate the concept of my very own show, Master Plan. My developing ambitions led me to follow Bonnie’s production model as well as her distribution model and create a media network for millennials from underrepresented communities to produce and distribute content dealing with business, community

and politics.

Master Plan focuses on interviewing entrepreneurs, community leaders and local politicians who were pursuing their God given life purpose, aka their Master Plan, and were willing to risk their livelihood to achieve their goals. This is what we entrepreneurs do: take risks that most people view as being crazy. In the Black community there aren’t many Black entrepreneurs that are vocal and able to share their experiences as business owners.

My community lacks business mentors that set an example for the next generation of business owners.

It was my goal to create a platform that taught my community to thrive in entrepreneurship while staying true to themselves.

Master Plan exceeded all of my expectations. From the first guest, SP the Artist, to the most recent interview with Miss Venezuela International, Luisa Diaz, Master Plan grew like wild fire via word of mouth and social media. Guest referred other guests making it easy to mass produce episodes in a short amount of time. Master Plan also attracted new producers, clients

and opportunities. With every interview, I also gained pertinent information that I could apply to my own business. Albeit selfish, Master Plan became a vital opportunity to discover new tools and resources that could be used to build Young Boss Media into a Fortune 500 company.

Currently we are on the second season of Master Plan and are focused on creating more programing that empowers millennials from communities underrepresented by mainstream media. My outfit has grown from 1 person to a 15-person team. From our flagship office in Chelsea, New York we are aggressively seeking out more producers that want to join the Young Boss Brand and along with sponsors and investors that believe in our long-term vision.

T

he show started as a feeler to be honest. In January of 2018 I answered an open call from a person in the church I was frequenting referred to me by a good friend with whom I was staying. I had moved to NYC in October hoping to extricate myself from a toxic relationship, reconnect with my family, and find a way to set some sort of barometer to the skills I had learned on the West Cost pursuing a music and (what I would later find out) a career in media.

My first time on the West Coast was in 2006 when I chased American Idol across the country and ended up dumping myself in Seattle, WA. It was there that I would attend the Art Institute for Audio Production, which was a literal dream come true for me. I only remained a year, but the knowledge I gained would catalyze the realization of many more life goals and childhood dreams.

After losing two jobs and having multiple business ventures stall, I returned to New Jersey in the beginning of 2007. I eventually found my way south again and received a cold reception. A good friend helped me pick up the pieces and I lived with her until 2009. A fellow schoolmate who also hailed from New Jersey wanted to begin a musical project with me so I was flown out and stayed in Stanwood, WA. Things again went south and bad decisions lead me to my first stint in a county jail. From the beginning of 2011 until the middle of 2012, I was in and out of jail, struggling through counseling, severe mental illness, and a methamphetamine addiction.

In 2013, I celebrated (perhaps I should say “mourned”) playing music professionally for ten years and I was beginning to lose hope and confidence in my ability. From my days as lead singer of “The Last Drive” to my own solo efforts, the

most success I had seen was when I learned to draw Henna tattoos on the Seaside Heights boardwalk. I wanted to validate my musical skills with that type of success. Fresh out of county jail in a state I wasn’t familiar with, there were little to no prospects for me to spread my creativity … or so it seemed.

At the peak of my drug use before I made the decision to quit (largely in part to the Everett Poetry Night community) I was alone in a miniaturized trap house, wanting to psyche myself out of continuing to pursue music. I submitted online applications to a few record labels that specialized in digital distribution. Two weeks later, a representative from Tate Music Group reached out to me, saying that they “liked my style and sound” and that they wanted to offer me a distribution deal. I accepted the terms and waited for an opportune time to fulfill the requirements set forth by the label. Until this point, I had become semi-proficient in creating my own communications media … I figured the worst that could happen would be having to utilize the labels resources. So I designed the liner notes, and handled other aspects like mastering.

I created the treatments and we went from there … still unsure if the format and approach were going to be deliverable. After the first show featuring W.A.V and Kaysey Valez we both were sold, we knew we had something just by the energy we were able to create with the few people had there. Now, approaching our seventh episode, we’ve moved away from the “will it work?” stage and are looking at ways to expand and further separate “By Invitation” from the sea of late night talk shows that are in circulation now.

I attribute much, if not all of my relative success with the show to the invaluable experience learned

as an independent promoter and local celebrity in Washington State.

Something about not having to run about a crowded bar, work a sound board and the bar, while ensuring the patrons and participants receive the best quality experience really makes you appreciate a sterile environment like TV. I’d like to also believe that my personal artistic journey helps me relate to artists of all disciplines … helping them feel the time they spend in an interview is worthwhile and is about their message. As a fellow artist, that’s one of the most important goals of what I do as host of the show … making the interviews a liaison between the audience’s curiosity and the guest’s need for promotion.

BUSINESS KUNG FU 10 steps for millennial entreprenuers

So you’ve started from the bottom and now you’re here… staring entrepreneurship in the face and trying to figure out where to go from here. You’ve figured out what you’re good at, researched potential business ideas, decided on a venture, written a plan, and picked a name.

Now what?

Below are some tips from a fellow millennial business owner to help you get open, stay open, and operate legally.

1. Hi, My Name Is - Choosing An Entity What’s in a name you ask, well when it comes to those letters that follow your business name…EVERYTHING. A lot of times clients come to me with a name already chosen such as BBD, LLC and I’ll ask them what made you choose an LLC? Sometimes the response is “IDK I just like the way it sounds.” Then I educate them on choosing the appropriate business entity for their business.

Liability, taxation and recordkeeping are the three main factors to look at when choosing a business entity. There are several types of business entity options but the two that I recommend the most to my clients are: a Limited Liability Company (LLC) or a Corporation.

LLCs allow profits and losses to be passed through to owners without taxation of the business itself while owners are shielded from personal liability. Whether you are a sole proprietor or have a partner, the LLC is a good option for small businesses. The LLC does not have any residency or citizenship restrictions, which allows foreign nationals to have ownership in an LLC. Other corporate entities may be LLC members. LLCs offer the ability to allocate profits and losses to members in varying amounts.

The corporation is taxed, can make a profit, and is held legally liable for its actions separate from its owners. The primary disadvantage is the cost to form a corporation and the extensive record-keeping that’s required. The Subchapter S Corporation (S-Corp) is a variant of the regular C Corporation that allows income or losses to be passed through on individual tax returns.

S-Corps allow the owners to take a smaller salary and pay income taxes and regular payroll deductions, then take the remainder of profit as a distribution subject to income tax only once the S-Corp is profitable.

Why would I choose a corporation?

raise public money, since you don’t have shares or stock certificates to offer. LLCs have less tax advantages than corporations. LLC members pay self-employment taxes; it’s calculated on 15.3 percent of profits.

For S-Corps, self-employment tax is due on salary only, not entire profits.

Also the new 2018 Tax plan makes it more advantageous to have a corporation.

In this edition of “Tech It Out” we are going to review the Galaxy S9 Android phone from Samsung. Now some of you are probably already rolling your eyes as the Samsung Galaxy series has been known to boast top of the line performance, but in the practical use of the device, many stubborn functionality issues appear. I will openly admit that I have encountered a few issues of the sort, but I want to tailor this article to first time (and unbiased) users.

What's more, if you are a first year entrepreneur this phone will probably be your best bet to not only impress - as it is a new release and the focus of much tech talk - but it WILL increase your productivity.

Why do I say this?

Well, just about any mid range thru to the upper echelon of carriers (esp.

The Design & Display

only 5.75oz. - why did I mention this? Because it's less than a third of an inch thick and 5.81 inches long. Add Bluetooth, Will Travel … you are much less likely to get your new prize swiped in your pocket but I must warn that it can be a little larger that the average human hand … keep a decent grip. My only complaint here and I'm being a little stubborn is that it can be hard to operate one handed. I say stubborn because the phone does have a “one hand mode” … I just find it relatively unnecessary (as per my experience with just about every low budget LG Android incarnation circa 2010).

This little number has one, if not THE best cameras on the block. The S9 comes equipped with a front and rear camera. Big whoop, right? no less than 30fps. Slow and Super Slow-mo support, Hyperlapse, auto focus and the ability to snap stills at 9.1 megapixels while recording in 4k. Content creators need this for on the go media at the highest quality … and boy does it show!

This function has never given me problems … it cuts video at 38:48 and then creates another vid automatically so your videos are seamless.

Performance

It runs at 2.8GHz (about as fast as a standard laptop) and can reach speeds close to 6GHz. The downside is that it only runs 4GB of RAM … so yeah … it will hang if you try to do too much too fast but it really does have to be a good deal (be warned tho Instagram and Facebook live will make it hang if you aren't careful).

The Other Stuff

K. It's water resistant. Resistant … meaning you can use it in the rain but I wouldn't go swimming with it.

I have literally been out for a full day's work without my charger (it comes with a fast charger but don't forget the cord cause it's the new age micro SD), recorded almost an hour of video, used navigation while rocking Spotify, and still had the juice to text and call on Bluetooth and I made it home with about 30% to spare.

Many of the other “bell and whistle” functionality features are cute but they aren't really necessary. My favorites and most used are the Edge Screen, which is like a quick launch app folder that you can customize and even comes with a compass (magnetic), calendar, and access to your clipboard, allowing you to access copied text, images, and even URL's for quick paste capabilities. It's great for social media plugs across multiple platforms.

To be honest, my only real complaint about the phone is the display will lock itself in landscape mode in certain apps and the touch screen becomes unresponsive. There are a host of other issues that are reported online … but I haven't encountered those problems.

Overall, this phone is one of the best investments I've made. I recommend it to intermediate to advanced users who are social media savvy and need the multimedia angle to promote.
