On 11/9/22 I discovered posters throughout campus advertising a senior project for Peace & Justice studies by Melissa Trujillo The event is titled "Tired of white cis men? Come paint & write about it" The event is scheduled to be held in the GSRC on Saturday 11/12/22
This event cuts directly against the college's values of community and inclusion. The mere presence of an event on campus that is focused on vilifying and devaluing white male students creates an environment in which students are being excluded and otherized based on immutable traits (race and sex, and by extension, gender identity, and gender expression). While in theory, this event might exist only for a senior research project, in practice it creates a hostile environment for many students that perpetuates racism and sexism on campus
More troubling than the event itself is that the poster states that the paintings created at the event in the GSRC will be hung publicly in Junction. Hanging paintings that vilify and devalue students on the basis of their race and sex is nothing short of intimidation It tells white male students, like myself, that our experiences, perspectives, and mere presence on campus are not valued and are unwelcome
The presence of these posters in Junction will create at best an uncomfortable environment for white male students, including myself. At worst, it will create an environment in which white male students feel unsafe CUB and Junction are some of the most public spaces on campus where students go to eat, socialize, and do work. It is not a place where racist and sexist postings should be tolerated. I will not feel comfortable sitting in CUB or Junction near posters that go out of their way to devalue my presence and my perspectives on the basis of my sex and race.
The college would never tolerate this event if it targeted any other race or sex. The fact that I am white and male should not deny me the same rights all other students enjoy to not be targeted on the basis of their race and sex.
These posters will do serious harm to race relations on campus and will foster unsafe circumstances for myself and others.
This report is led both against the student doing the project as well as the Department and/or professor(s) who approved it.
