Fathers Are An Extension of GOD'S Love

Editor’s Letter: Leticia Starks-Underwood A Father's love is one of the greatest gifts we can receive in life. I’m talking about Father GOD’S love. It is a source of strength, comfort, hope, perseverance, and Grace.

GOD is our heavenly Father, Abba Father, and His love is perfect and unconditional. When we struggle to love ourselves and to love others, GOD reminds us that His love is immeasurable to human love. In our highest and lowest moments of life, it’s Daddy GOD’S love rescuing and protecting us. GOD’s love, as described in 1 Corinthians 13, is the agape love, GOD’S unconditional love for you and me. Sometimes in life, when we are wrestling with ourselves or with everyday adversity, it is easy to question GOD’S love for us or even battle with whether we deserve GOD’S love for us. But let me remind you that GOD’S love is not predicated on behavior and works. GOD loves you so much that He sent His one and only Son to die on the cross for you.

John 3:16, “For GOD so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

We may not always feel GOD’S presence with us, but we must know that He loves us unconditionally and that He is present in our lives. He is our guide and protector who never leaves us nor forsakes us. It’s GOD’S love rooting for us and pulling us through. It is by Grace through faith that we are able to bask in His love, especially when we need His love the most.

GOD loves you! GOD unconditionally loves you!

However, GOD uses people in the earth, such as spiritual fathers, to be an extension of His love.

So, when you don’t know what to do, GOD will speak through someone to give you hope, rescue you when you get lost, love you when you don’t know how to love yourself, see the potential in you until you are able to see the potential in yourself, remind you who you are in Christ when you forget who you are, hug you with the Presence of GOD when you need a hug from GOD, to say I love you when you feel defeated, knowing it’s GOD moving through that person.

So, in this edition, I take time to honor the father of my children, Oscar Ja’Marqis Underwood III, my spiritual father and grandfather, Dr. Oscar Nelson Dowdell-Underwood, my father, Vernie Starks Sr., and my bonus father, Tracy Naylor as many others honor their fathers or father figures from around the world by sharing their stories of hope and love.

In addition, as we honor fathers from around the world, we celebrate and honor 2023 graduates from high school, post-secondary education, and graduate school. We know it wasn’t easy, but you stayed the course, followed the process, and YOU MADE IT! Congratulations to all the fathers who are actively present in their children's lives and to all 2023 graduates. Always remember, no matter what, GOD LOVES YOU!!!!!

A father's love is a powerful force that can shape a child's life in countless ways, especially if it’s predicated on the love of GOD. From playful moments to unwavering support, a father's love can have a profound impact on a child's emotional and mental wellbeing, attitudes, and values. But fatherhood is not without its challenges and obstacles, and navigating through them can be difficult, but faith in GOD will give Fathers the strength to persevere and be an example for their children.

As children, some of our most cherished memories are the playful moments and bonding activities we shared with our fathers by blood, spirit, or someone who just stepped in as a father. Whether it was playing catch in the backyard, building a treehouse together, praying, or going to church together, these experiences helped to strengthen the bond between father and child.

But a father's love goes beyond just fun and games. It also includes unwavering support and encouragement, even in the face of adversity. Fathers often make sacrifices for the sake of their family's future, working long hours to provide for their children's education and well-being.

Fatherhood is not without its challenges, and many fathers struggle to balance work and family responsibilities and being at extracurricular activities for the kids.

Balancing being a father, financial responsibilities, and providing for the family can also be a significant source of pressure. Additionally, fathers may face difficulties navigating through their children's emotional and behavioral issues,

such as dealing with teenage rebellion or helping a child through a difficult time. However, despite these challenges, fathers continue to persevere and do their best for their children while depending on GOD for strength and empowerment.

The impact of a father's love on children's lives is immeasurable.

Studies have shown that children who grow up with a loving and involved father are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better mental health, and stronger relationships with others. Fathers also serve as role models for their children's personal and professional development, teaching them important values such as responsibility, respect, and perseverance. Furthermore, a true father shows the necessity of having a relationship with GOD. Thus, children watching their father’s relationship with GOD would inspire them to have a greater relationship with GOD. A father's love that is grounded in GOD’S love can shape a child's future in countless ways,

providing them with a foundation of love, support, and faith in GOD that they can carry with them throughout their lives, especially when faced with adversity and circumstance.

In conclusion, a father's love is a powerful force that can shape a child's life in countless ways and govern the way a child builds relationships with people in the future. From childhood memories of playful moments to going to church together to the challenges and obstacles of fatherhood, a father's love can have a profound impact on a child's emotional and mental wellbeing, attitudes, and values. The impact a father's love, especially one that is rooted in Christ's love, will have on children's lives is immeasurable, and fathers play a vital role in their children's personal, professional, and spiritual development. As we celebrate the love of fathers, we must remember the importance of their role in shaping the future of our children, which will have an everlasting impact on their lives, even in adulthood.

Sir, GOD extremely blessed me when he decided to give you to me as my second father. Sir, you're not just a father figure; you, indeed, are my teacher, mentor, and encourager. That is who you are. Thank you for being that example that I needed in my life. Words can't express my gratitude to you. If it wasn't for your correction and stern words, always with love when you speak to me, I would not have grown the way I have over these past nine years that you have been part of my life. I truly didn’t understand exactly what it was when people would say, fatherly Love.

Because of your actions, you speak to me! I now understand a Father’s Love. Thank you for showing me that it’s okay to dream and not only dream but to have a Vision and work that Vision. Thank you for teaching me about my Purpose and Destiny.

Because you saw something in me and spoke life to me, I started to see it in myself.

Most girls grow up being daddy girls. GOD saw fit for me to grow up and become a Daddy's Girl!! I Bless GOD for you! One definition states that a father is “any male acting in a paternal capacity.” A father is also a guardian, a person who guards, protects, or preserves. When I think of how my natural father exemplified the true meaning of these terms in all that he did to protect, provide for and sacrifice for his family, I automatically think, too, of my Spiritual Father, Apostle Dr. Oscar J. Nelson Dowdell-Underwood. He is the one that FATHER GOD, my Creator, assigned to me, to watch over, instruct, correct, teach, and encourage me. I am so grateful! I know that I can have complete trust in him because he is the one that GOD appointed and anointed to fulfill the role of Spiritual Father in my life; my trust is not unfounded, for Dr. OJNDU follows GOD with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength!

That’s what GOD instructs us to do, even as He directs us to believe GOD and be established and to believe His prophets and prosper. (II Chron. 20:20) We are to follow those GOD placed in those positions, those Gifts that were left to us— Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers—as they follow CHRIST. That is why I have complete faith in my Spiritual Father, for Dr. OJNDU is onehundred-percent sold-out to our SAVIOR and LORD!!! He covers me with the Love of GOD and makes sure that I know what “thus saith the LORD.” He hears from GOD and faithfully delivers it to me and to all those who have an ear to hear.

There is no true father who does not live a life of sacrifice, and I have seen over and over the sacrifices that Dr. OJNDU has made on behalf of GOD’s people, the sheep that GOD has assigned to him to pastor. I can’t be anything but grateful to him, for I know that those sacrifices were made out of Love and Obedience. That is why I choose to honor him on this Father’s Day and give him all the respect that he deserves! Sir, thank you for being my most excellent Spiritual Father!!! According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a tribute is: : something given or contributed voluntarily as due or deserved : especially a gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection I thank GOD for my earthly father, Wyatt Hines, who is no longer with us.

He was our protector and provider and a compassionate and loving father. I will always be grateful to GOD for placing me under the care of such a man whose heart was unconditional love. My father had the heart of GOD. He was a man who only wanted to provide the best for his family. My father was selfless, working tirelessly day after day to make that happen. Years later, Father GOD connected me to my Spiritual Father, Apostle Dowdell-Underwood. I am forever grateful to GOD for connecting me with my Apostle. He is truly a man after GOD’S own heart.

As his spiritual daughter, he loves and cares for my well-being. He is my mentor, my life coach, my encourager, and my protector. In contrast, spiritual fathers are designed to guide their spiritual children toward their God-given destiny according to the Word of GOD. Furthermore, a spiritual father is an extension of GOD’S Love in the earth realm. I thank GOD for my spiritual father, Dr. Oscar J. Nelson Dowdell-Underwood, who also is my pastor, mentor, and grandfather. When I reflect on my life, I can’t help but thank GOD for my spiritual father, pastor, mentor, and grandfather. So, I take a moment to honor you through this article.

You play multiple roles in my life, Grandpa, and I am grateful for all you do.

He is my sweetest rival and best friend. I am comfortable telling him everything, including negative things. He was, is, and will always be my comfort and refuge. One thing I appreciate about him is that when I have questions, he eagerly answers them. Even when I am annoying, he patiently gives me advice and support. I am very thankful that he’s always got my back. No matter what challenges come into our relationship, we can overcome them through God. I can confidently say this because I witnessed Papa’s faith and how he trusts God in every situation. I am also thankful to Papa for always giving the best for our family. I am proud of how patient and enduring he is. His wide and rough hands represent a very hardworking father.

He is very dependable and I get very emotional whenever I have a thought of someday losing him. It will be very hard for me to live without him. But of course, I know that it is God whom I must trust and depend on. In several years of having each other, we had a lot of memories, both good and bad, beautiful and ugly. But God used each of those memories to mold us to be who He wanted us to be, for us to be stronger partners in giving Glory to God. I am always vocal about how I love love love his principle about marriage, how sacred it is, and how he knows how much God values it so he does too. Sometimes, I am looking for a standard character of a leader in him, forgetting my role of supporting and complementing him. I realized that it is my role to fill in the things he lacks. In that, God can use us together more efficiently and effectively for His Glory. One of the reasons why our family and ministry are being blessed tremendously is Papa’s priority. First is God, I am the second as his spouse, then our children, and next is others and our ministry.

Words are not enough to describe how much he means to me. I am very grateful that God has chosen me for him, and him for me. To God be all the Glory.

While on a long drive, chatting is one of our best bonding. Talking about random things and joking around are one of the best memories I value. He may not be a perfect father, and we have misunderstandings sometimes, but if I were given a chance to choose who’s gonna be my dad, I would always say his name. I can witness how he always wants to provide the best for our family and how his eyes are saddened whenever he thinks he’s lacking as a provider. But I want him to know through this message that he is enough. The memories of the times he lovingly spends with us are more than enough. The excitement of seeing his daughter for the first time is such a blessing for him, and that day he commits to the Lord that he will protect her, guide her, and give her the life that he never experienced growing up. My father’s love is unconditional. My father’s love is patient, kind, and forgiving.

Hi, I’m Chloe Rich Moleta, and growing up is not easy for me and my parents. The reason is that we have a low budget and income, but I never feel that way because my papa (father) always sacrifices to give me a happy and easy life. You are always there when I need someone, and when I'm at my lowest point, you always give me the vital advice I need to overcome everything. When I need something, you always provide it. I will never forget the time I saw my father's hand, and I cried that day because my father's hands are full of calluses, wounds, and some cuts because his job is as a construction worker here in the Philippines. He never gets a high-paying job. My father works six days, and his only rest is Sunday. I'm so grateful that I have a papa like you, Papa Charles Moleta. Thank you for everything that you have done for my life, from the time that I was born to the person that I am today. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you, my papa.

Leticia Starks-Underwood: What has been your greatest joy as a father?

Vernie Starks: Vernie Sr. has been married to his wife, Michelle Starks, for 25 years. Vernie Starks graduated from Snider High School; did factory work for 33 years; after retiring, GOD gave him the vision to start a career in entrepreneurism.

Vernie and his family have owned a Business that began in 2007 that many people around the world know as Snacks on Wheels. Starting from a box Truck and turning into a Food Truck, this is the beginning of Snacks on Wheels. In 2018 on May 30th, GOD gave Vernie the vision to open a fast-food restaurant with the same name. To this day, Vernie follows this dream and glorifies GOD with all his heart.

Vernie Starks: My greatest joy as a father has been watching my children become fine young men and women.

Leticia Starks-Underwood: When did you become a father, and how many children do you have?

Vernie Starks: Vernie became the father of his lovely daughter in 1990. Vernie has 7 children and 3 grandchildren.

Vernie Starks: My greatest challenge as a father is balancing three businesses and taking care of my family. GOD has given me the strength to move forward and balance all 3 with no struggle.

Leticia Starks-Underwood: We all face challenges in life. What advice or words of encouragement would you give fathers striving to overcome some life challenges?

Vernie Starks: As a father, a business owner, and a businessman, all I can say is to keep your head up and walk in Faith. Dr. Oscar Nelson DowdellUnderwood has encouraged me to be Faith-Focused. So, my advice or encouragement to everyone facing challenges they think they can’t overcome, you can if you walk in faith, trust GOD and let GOD take the wheel.

Keith Williams An Extension of GOD'S Love Leticia Starks-Underwood: Who is Keith Williams and what is his story?

Keith Williams: First and foremost, I am Keith Williams, a child of The Almighty! With all the rights, privileges, and blessings that go with that position! The creator of the Universe is “my” Father, and He loves me unconditionally! I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. One of 7 children, I was raised in a singleparent household. My mother and grandmother were my heroes and role models. They were my early examples/teachers of faith in God, the power of prayer, hard work, integrity, honesty, humility, selfrespect (no matter what), the importance of family, resiliency, toughness, and so much more! They helped lay the foundation for most of the relevant and non-relevant decisions I’ve made in my life up to this point.

My mother and grandmother gave me a perspective on life from a woman’s point of view that helped me navigate some very emotional times in my life.

They knew their assignment and carried it out with love and discipline by instilling in us, to ALWAYS put God first! The wisdom and knowledge they gave us was and is immeasurable! I haven’t always done what I was supposed to do or been where I was supposed to be, but because of GOD’S grace and Mom/grandmom's deposit, I’m here to tell my story! I’d like to think that God placed me under the leadership of Dr. Oscar J. Nelson DowdellUnderwood to continue what my mom/grandmother had started years ago…the development of Keith D Williams for the advancing of the Kingdom of God! Dr. Underwood is my current example/teacher and Apostle. Through his teachings, God’s grace, and the power of the Holy Spirit, I’ve grown in ways I never imagined. Keith Williams: I became a father at the age of 18. I now have 4 children (all adults).

What is your greatest joy as a father?

My greatest joy as a father is being a grandfather.

Leticia Starks-Undewood: What is one of your most significant challenges as a father?

Keith Williams: One of the most significant challenges as a father is having grown children and knowing when to mind my business (I will always want to fix WHATEVER goes wrong in their lives).

Leticia Starks-Undewood: What advice do you have for fathers who must balance being a father, husband, and work when employed full-time?

Keith Williams: The best advice I can give to young fathers who are trying to balance being a father, husband and working full time is to PUT GOD FIRST! In everything you do, say, and think, PUT GOD FIRST, LOVE GOD FIRST, love yourself, love your family, and everything else will fall into place. TRUST THE PROCESS!

Leticia Starks-Undewood: Why do you believe fathers are essential to a child’s development?

Keith Williams: I believe fathers are essential to a child’s development because my father wasn’t present in my life, and I know firsthand the impact it can have, especially on our young men. Balance is very crucial in a child’s development that both father and mother provide.

Benhur Tuazon An Extension of GOD'S Love Leticia Starks-Underwood: Who is Benhur Tuazon, and what is his story?

I am Benhur A. Tuazon. I grew up under the care of "two incomplete persons" in an almost dysfunctional family.

Although both are hardworking: my mother is a hardworking farmer and a religious woman, but my father, though he works very hard, his friends and earthly pleasures are his priorities.

Their marriage union is full of miseries, inspiring me to seek a better life and not walk in my father's way. I even hated to be referred to the phrase "like him." My life was, then, molded in the pattern of my family in the slum community of Metro Manila, where life is a real challenge. It is a basin of different struggles in life that has shaped my being, such as religious rituals, political corruption, and moral compromises to survive life. Then, to me, life was an existence and not of purpose.

In my 2nd year of Junior High, I was introduced by my math teacher, a former political activist, to new views of life, which changed YOU CAN MAKE IT INSPIRATION

her life. She gave me the detail of a Bible verse that changed her life from the book of John Chapter 3,verse 16. The message was, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

This verse gives me a new purpose in life, and my views in life have started to change. It was the turning point in my life that directed me to intentional living, which is to live for God. I went to church in a different setting from where I grew up, selected people I would be with, involved myself in church activities, and joined short mission trips. I also handled home Bible Studies. That was until my college entry, and I obtained my 1st full-time job.

At the age of 29, I decided to settle down with my fiancé Maria Elizabeth.

She and I have been together in one church. I carried on with the principle that "Marriage is sacred and commitment to work out in covenant with God, it is a covenant therefore, God will intervene for it is a lasting commitment."

We got married in 1990. In the first year of our marriage, 1991, my wife gave birth prematurely to a twin baby girl. Becoming a father of twins was a joyous feeling, but the saddest part was losing both of them in almost a week. I cried hard, but I know God is the author of life and not me. Although I accepted it that way but kept asking God why He allowed me to experience having and suddenly losing my joy. I know God is much more hurt by losing precious children. After a year of healing,Beth and I went down on our knees to God to give us a boy who would bring us close to Him and experience parenthood entrusted with the blessing of marriage.

A boy was given to us in 1993. We named him Eli-Hur. He was the boy who really brought us closer to God. God exposes my inner being and my incompleteness as a father. My son's character reflects who I am as a father and the quality of faith I am living with.

At the age of 17, I heard a hurting word from my son saying, "You are an overcontrolling, all-knowing father. You are not God who can change me." He intentionally opposed everything from me and deliberately did things I disagree with. Seeing his life worsen with hatred, drugs, and other vises, left me feeling helpless as a father. It wasn't just his words that caused my heart to melt as a father but also his ruined life.

I created a "monster" that revealed my self-righteousness, over-controlling parenting, and to some, a hypocrite. He never saw in me the picture of a FATHER I am talking about, not until I

went down on my knees to God and prayed to Him to change me into His image, an image of a forgiving, loving father who could create a welcoming atmosphere of complete trust and hope.

My son was used by God to fine-tune my faith in Him, to ultimately live a life in His presence, and to have Him in all aspects of life, a partner indeed. Not to compromise the priorities of life, to first Love God, next strengthen the covenant of marriage, putting my spouse next to God, a strong couple to work together in our first ministry, which is our family. All other ministries like job, community, and other missions will surely be blessed by God. Beth and I are now in the couples ministry of the church as counselors and actively involved in family ministry. Added to this is our ministry in our community, also the continuing ministry with our siblings.

My Son and I rebounded to God after He worked on our humility. He allowed our hearts to be broken and reshaped them with forgiveness, experiencing His daily presence in all that we do, and in all we do, we do it all as for the Lord.

God blessed me not just with a son but also a daughter, blessed with God's wisdom. She is now 17 years old and encircled with God's Grace and Mercy, all for His GLORY!
