Season outlook The last time the York Lions women’s soccer team went into a season with high expectations, they rose to the occasion and delivered the 2019 OUA championship. Now they’ll have to do the same thing with the defending champion target on their backs.
OUA championship-winning goal into the net during the 87th minute of the final, cementing a one-goal win for York over Toronto. Castellano had a goal and an assist in the regular season and will remain a crucial portion of the team going forward.
The Lions have continuously placed amongst the best in the OUA since Carmine Isacco took the head coaching reigns for the Lions women’s soccer program, but 2019 was the first where this group experienced lasting playoff success and made their first push to the OUA championship. It was due to the depth they had across all positions, solid goaltending and timely scoring late in the season.
The Lions will also get back a two-time OUA West first-team all-star in Kalifornia Mitchell, who used her speed and skill to make an impact immediately upon joining the Lions in 2018 and had the second goal in the upset semifinal win over Ottawa in 2019.
This year, many of those players have returned to the team, providing a major boost to the squad’s chances as they embark on a title defence coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, as Isacco says, the group isn’t as experienced as some other iterations of the team.
Mitchell will have some familiar company for the upcoming season, due to a new recruit with the same bloodline. BrookLynne Mitchell, Kalifornia’s sister, will join the team in 2021 as a defender. “We have a mix of younger players and senior leaders but I expect a dynamic team; I am hoping the younger players play like experienced players, and our veterans play with the same energy and enthusiasm as the younger players.” The head coach says this dynamic needs to make itself apparent early, and there is little room for growing pains with the team set to play out their regular season schedule against some of the top teams in the country. While the team will be without Kiyani Johnson and Farkhunda Muhtaj, two of the former top three scorers on the 2019 iteration of the Lions, No. 3 will indeed be back to the squad in 2021. Jotam Chouhan had a goal and two assists in 14 starts during the 2019 regular season and played a crucial offensive role in the OUA playoffs. Marissa Castellano was only a rookie in 2019 but she left an undeniable impact on the Lions by scoring the most important goal of the season at one of the best possible times. She slid the

Jack, and midfielder Jasmine Broderick Bobadilla. Isacco expects all of them to make an impact as the team aims for a repeat of the OUA championship. The Lions leadership group will be made up of many new players this year, much like many other OUA programs after the pandemic-induced 2020 season cancellation. However, a former captain will remain with the team in a leadership role. Muhtaj, who played five years with York, joins Isacco’s staff as assistant coach. The Lions will face a number of new teams in the regular season this year after the divisions were shuffled and three were created for 2021. York will play in the East alongside an entirely different slate of opponents in Carleton, Ontario Tech, Ottawa, Queen’s, RMC and Trent. The top two teams in each division will automatically qualify for the playoffs, as will the next two best squads, and the eight that advance will play through to the two best facing off in the OUA championship on Saturday, Nov. 13.

MASTER Coach CARMINE ISACCO Master Coach
Carmine Isacco was named the head coach of the Lions men’s soccer team in 2007 and has built the program into one of the best in U SPORTS. He is now the master coach of York’s soccer program, overseeing both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the first assistant coach for York9 in the Canadian Premier League (CPL). The Lions men’s team has made nine appearances at the national championships with him at the helm and has won four national banners (2008, 2010, 2014-15). They are also six-time OUA champions under his guidance (2007, 2013-15, 2017-18) and have won provincial medals in 11 of the 12 years he has led the program. The Lions have finished first in the OUA West Division in each of his 12 seasons and have earned the No. 1 spot in the weekly U SPORTS rankings at least once in each year since he took over. In 2015, he guided the women’s soccer team to an undefeated regular season (15-0-1) and the team was ranked as high as No. 2 in the U SPORTS rankings. Isacco is a six-time recipient of the OUA men’s coach of the year award, (2007, 2010, 2012-14, 2016) and won his first OUA women’s coach of the year award in 2015. He is also a two-time U SPORTS coach of the year (2007, 2014) and a three-time York coach of the year (2010, 2015-16). In 2015 he served as a guest coach with the Canadian senior
men’s team for a pair of friendlies in advance of World Cup qualifying, and he was an assistant coach with the U22 team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. He joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach of the men’s team at the University of Toronto, where he led the Varsity Blues to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen him claim a national championship with the Hearts-Azzurri S.C. in the U18 division. In addition to his role as club head coach for Hearts-Azzurri, he also served as the club’s general manager, responsible for the administration of over 2000 young soccer players. As head coach of Toronto Supra in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), Isacco was named coach of the year in 2002 in the Ontario Youth Soccer League. As a player, Isacco took to the pitch at the University of Maryland, where he was named a freshman all-American and a three-time all-ACC first team member. In 1993 he participated in the World University Games. After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree from Maryland, he turned professional and played four seasons with the Toronto Italia Soccer Club in the National Soccer League (NSL). In his first season with the club he was named goalkeeper of the year and he also received Canadian all-star status three times. Following his stint in the NSL, Isacco was a player and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Rampage in the A-League. While with Milwaukee, he was named an all-league first-team all-star, playoff MVP and he captured a league title in 1997. He has also spent time with the Rochester Rhinos and Toronto Lynx as a player/assistant coach in the A-League. His indoor playing career in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) saw him claim a league title in 1998 with the Milwaukee Wave and he was named a league all-star while playing for the Edmonton Drillers. Other stops in the indoor NPSL include the Toronto Shooting Stars and Buffalo Blizzard.

Tina Cook joined the Lions in 2018 after a four-year stint as an assistant coach with the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team. Her coaching experience also includes working as a staff coach with the Richmond Hill Soccer Club, associate technical director with Newmarket Soccer Club, head coach of the junior varsity team at Graceland University and one year as an assistant coach with Graceland’s varsity team.
Paul DeAbreu joined the Lions coaching staff in 2011. In addition to working with the Lions, he is also the head coach of the Pickering Power Girls Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) U15 and U17 teams. He has also been the assistant coach of the W-League’s Lady Lynx. In 2010, DeAbreu coached his Pickering girls U16 OYSL team to an undefeated season, which culminated in an OYSL Cup championship, an Ontario Cup championship and a national title.

As a player, Cook excelled at Graceland University where she was a four-year NAIA varsity scholarship athlete. The Yellowjackets went undefeated in Heart of America Conference play during her time with the team and reached the national championship elite eight in 2005 and 2008. She was also named team captain and earned an NAIA all-American scholar-athlete designation as well as the NAIA champion of character award. After graduating from Graceland she played professionally for two years in Greece. Cook has also served as assistant coach to the Guyana U20 women’s national team as of 2021.

He has previously worked with head coach Carmine Isacco, where he served as an assistant with the Azzurri U18 boys team in 2008. He was also the head coach for the Unionville U18 boys’ team, where he coached the squad to a silver medal at the national championships. DeAbreu has also served as first assistant coach to the Guyana U20 women’s national team.

Farkhunda Muhtaj is no stranger to Lions athletics. While she joined the Lions as an assistant coach in September 2020, she has spent five seasons in a York uniform as a midfielder on the women’s soccer team before her university career ended in 2019 with an OUA championship and the first York women’s soccer national tournament appearance in 10 years. She captained the team in her final two seasons (2018 and 2019), was an OUA first-team all-star in 2019, and led the OUA in assists (11) during a memorable offensive campaign in 2018. She continues to play soccer today as a member of League1 Ontario’s Vaughan Azzuri, and is the captain of the Afghanistan women’s national team. She has been featured in CP24 for her recent humanitarian and emergency rescue aid for Afghanistan. Muhtaj is also a humanitarian ambassador for Penny Appeal Canada.

Kennedi Herrmann was added to the women’s soccer team’s coaching staff in 2021. A prominent figure in the GTA women’s soccer community, the Milton, Ont., native currently serves as the director of female soccer for the Mississauga-based Prostars FC Academy. She’s still honing her soccer skills daily, currently playing top-tier amateur soccer with League1 Ontario’s Woodbridge Strikers. Herrmann’s university playing career unfolded over four seasons with the Armstrong State Pirates in Savannah, Georgia. She played a crucial role in the NCAA Division II squad’s leadership group during her junior and senior seasons, and was recognized as a member of the Peach Belt Conference’s Presidential Honour Roll in all four of her seasons at Armstrong State. A graduate of Armstrong State, Herrmann possesses a degree in biology.
In the community, Muhtaj has played an instrumental role in building bridges for refugees, establishing the Scarborough Simbas program for newcomer soccer players. Muhtaj earned two degrees from York during her time as a student athlete; a kinesiology & health science degree, and a bachelor of education. She is currently a science and physical education teacher.

mitchell sisters One Mitchell has already been one of the most notable York Lions women’s soccer performers for the last could years – and now, there’s likely to be two Mitchells occupying that title. Kalifornia Mitchell is joined by her sister BrookLynne Mitchell on the 2021 iteration of the Lions women’s soccer team. Their careers are crossing paths for the very first time. It was supposed to happen a year earlier, when the two were going to be joining the same League1 Ontario squad in Vaughan, Ont., but the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to that thought. Lucky for them, they get another chance to do it at York. It’ll mainly be due to Brook-Lynne’s high level of play, which has allowed her to earn playing time as a first-year player in the OUA. “Sometimes it’s hard because we play two different positions. Her thought process is different than my thought process, so it isn’t the easiest to bounce ideas off each other, but we both have a high level of compete,” Kali said. “We connect a lot. We even have our own handshake,” Brook-Lynne said. It’s not lost on her that this is a very unique opportunity – she has enjoyed watching Kali play since they were much younger, always attending games and cheering her on. This has given her a window into how her older sister, a two-time OUA West first-team all-star, enjoys all her success on the pitch.
“It’s easier for me to tell rookies where they should be when there is someone else setting the standard. It makes it easier, but it’s up to Brook-Lynne to continue her good work too.” Brook-Lynne says she’s found some areas of the OUA game easy to transition to, and others are more difficult. She cites the physicality of the game as a big difference from club soccer. “Since some of the girls are older it’s hard to get to that level immediately, but I think I can adjust to it.” Brook-Lynne says she has found comfort in speaking with other younger players on the team about their transition to the OUA level as well, especially given the large amount of turnover with the double cohort off the 2020 season cancellation. Paige De Santo and Sabrina Fabiano were her league opponents growing up, and they can use each other as a sounding board. As the rookies get acclimated with the pace of the OUA, it’s Kali’s job to help morph the team into a high playoff seed, and ultimately, a return to the U SPORTS national championship – just like they did in 2019. “We’re going to go to nationals and we’re going to compete. Hopefully, we’ll come out on top. We made it last year and weren’t quite able to win, but the appearance at nationals is the expectation now.”
She employs that into her game as a younger player, and the 2003-born native of Ajax, Ont., has enjoyed considerable success as a result. Having her talented younger sister around has helped Kali develop ways to encourage the younger group on the team. In a leadership role, Kali has been able to reference Brook-Lynne’s early work ethic at training camp as a means to get other young players into a Lions uniform on the field.
