Speedghetti!

FOOD, FUN & FUNDS – Brayden Ottenbreit’s Close Cut for Cancer and Yorkton’s Boston Pizza teamed up this year for an inaugural event to raise funds to help continue the fight against cancer. On the Monday evening the very first “Speedghetti” event was held, pitting participant against participant in a messy spaghetti eating contest. Over $5,200 was raised as a result, which will be put towards the Palliative Care Department at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre through The Health Foundation. was that financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of The Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan, Inc. Ross Fisher, Executive Director of the Health Foundation says that it’s a priority to handle the dona-

tions the Foundation receives in the most efficient manner possible, so people know their money is going to the equipment and service expansion they want to see.

“We try to be as efficient as we can be, we are among the most efficient charities in the country in terms of how much

money we raise goes towards our purpose of buying medical equipment. That’s what we want to do, and people want to know that if they donate $100, that you’re spending $90 of that on medical equipment, and overhead costs don’t eat all of their donation.”

Foreign worker program under the microscope – investigation underway

By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer The federal government has suspended the use of the temporary foreign worker program for the food service industry, pending investigation into alleged abuses of the system by restaurants in the country.

Yorkton-Melville MP Gary Breitkreuz says that for the time being the measure will be limited to the food services sector, and will be in place until an investiga-

A restaurant employer in Weyburn has been accused of replacing long-time local employees with temporary foreign workers, and Breitkreuz says while this did initially prompt the investigation, it also revealed that the abuses of the system appeared to be more widespread than initially thought.

Changes to care to benefit Sask residents Changes and investments during the four-year Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative have resulted in sooner, safer, smarter surgical care for the people of Saskatchewan, says the provincial government. The number of patients waiting more than three months for surgery is down 75 per cent, with 11,528 fewer patients waiting that long for surgery on March 31, 2014, than in March 2010.

“Since the introduction of this initiative, there has been a dramatic improvement in access to surgical care for the people of Saskatchewan,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan says.

“Thanks to the hard work of regional health authorities and patients, we saw a remarkable improvement in sur-

gical wait times across the province.”

The Surgical Initiative was the first major health system project to include patients in the planning process.

“More and more members of our health care teams, including management, frontline staff and patients and families are becoming active in the improvement process,” Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region patient advisor Cindy Dumba adds. “The more we work together, the better the improvements.”

Of the 10 health regions that offer surgery, four achieved the goal of having no patients waiting longer than three months for surgery by March 31, 2014, four are very close (with a combined total of 41 patients still waiting more than three months) and the

two largest health regions are working hard to reach the goal during the 2014-15 fiscal year, after facing unexpectedly high demand for surgeries.

Looking at the last three months of the initiative, of all patients who received surgery between January 1, 2014 and March 31, 2014, 80.8 per cent received it within three months of being booked for surgery.

The Surgical Initiative released a report on its final year of activity, citing key improvements that have resulted in sooner, safer and smarter surgical care: • An online Specialist Directory to help patients identify surgical options; • Specialist groups that pool referrals, so patients can see the first ap-

propriate specialist, or wait for a specific specialist; • Timely and appropriate care through clinical “pathways”; Province-wide implementation of the surgical safety checklist and measures to prevent surgical infections and medication errors; • Increased capacity to train operating room nurses; • Expanded capacity through thirdparty surgical and diagnostic services; and, • A culture of continuous improvement being adopted by health system partners.

D-DAY – To commemorate the 70th anniversary of DDay on June 6, The War Amps YouTube channel is featuring iconic footage of Canadian troops storming Juno Beach in Normandy in 1944. Sask. health care input sought Saskatchewan residents who want to make a difference in health care have the opportunity to serve on a committee that helps ensure decisions on outof-province and out-of-country medical coverage are consistent with legislation, policies and guidelines.

The Ministry of Health has announced it is seeking motivated people to fill several public representative positions on the Health Services Review Committee, an independent body which reviews government decisions made on out-of-province and out-of-country medical coverage. Closing date for submission of resumés is June 6.

“We’re looking for people who would like to share their knowledge and voice, putting the interests of patients first,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan com-

ments. “Public members play an important role in ensuring the best interests of Saskatchewan residents are represented.”

Patients may request a review of Ministry of Health decisions to ensure that government policy was followed.

Although prior approval is not required for most hospital and physician services received in other provinces, coverage for out-of-country treatment is only considered in exceptional circumstances and must have prior approval from the Ministry of Health. Information on outof-province and out-of-country medical services can be found at www.health.gov.sk.ca/out-ofprovince.

Saskatchewan citizens with relevant skills including prior experience on boards, councils or committees are encouraged to

apply. Typically these are threeyear appointments, which may be extended for a second term.

Meetings convene in Regina, Saskatoon or other locations in Saskatchewan. The time commitment ranges from four to 12 days a year. Travel expenses and an honourarium will be paid.

Fisher says a good year is as much about where the money is spent as it is about how much is raised.

The garden of health

Are you looking forward to enjoying fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables, right from your own back yard? The taste always seems so much more flavorful when they are home-grown. They are more nutritious, too, when they are freshly picked and eaten, when the enzymes and vitamins are still intact.

But, of course, they don’t just magically appear without any work. Gardening takes time and effort, and for many, it becomes a labor of love.

In many ways, we can compare our quest for health to gardening activities. Creating and maintaining good health is really quite similar to growing a healthy garden. Both projects involve four basic activities. Both can yield bountiful harvests, when properly cared for and nurtured.

PREPARING THE SOIL Before even planting any seeds, we need to prepare the soil. A flourishing garden requires healthy, living soil. The pH balance of the soil must be right to support plant growth. Minerals are required in adequate amounts and proportions, so we fertilize the soil. Beneficial microorganisms are needed for many purposes, including keeping harmful ones under control. Soil health is directly related to microbial activity.

In the body, the internal environment is the “soil” that cells grow in.

This internal terrain needs to have a favorable pH level - not too alkaline and not too acidic! Our body cells are nourished from the foods we choose to eat. If the diet is too acidic, then the body eventually becomes too acidic.

Beneficial bacteria are needed in the body, as well as in the garden, for us to thrive!

WATERING THE GARDEN

Once the garden is planted, it needs to be watered consistently, except when it rains.

Several people are chronically dehydrated.

It’s surprising how many body symptoms can disappear when we are well hydrated. Don’t deprive your body of life-giving water!

PULLING THE WEEDS Weeds in the garden can rob plants of water, sunlight and nutrients.

If they are not eliminated regularly, the weeds compete with the planted varieties, putting them at a considerable disadvantage. A garden that is overgrown with weeds lacks eye appeal, as well.

Weeding the garden may not be a favorite activity, but it must be done from time to time.

Within our bodies, weeds represent any undesirable substances that can accumulate, if we let them. For instance, heavy metals and chemical residues in our food, exhaust fumes in the air we breathe, impurities in our drinking water, all create a toxic buildup that our bodies need to neutralize and eliminate. If an overload accumulates, then our internal gardens cannot thrive. The weeds, which we call wastes or toxins, need to be cleansed out of our systems on a regular basis. For most, it is wise to do a body cleanse about twice a year. If you work in a toxic environment, consider cleansing more often. Weeds and toxins both need to be pulled out before they go to seed and take over their environment.

ENJOYING THE HARVEST I suspect that no matter how relaxing or enjoyable gardening is for a person, the best rewards are in the harvest! And the harvest is dependent on the amount of work done. When each step of the gardening process has been completed, a bountiful harvest can be expected.

Similarly, we can expect a harvest of abundant health if we faithfully tend the individual garden of health within each of us. I wish you a bountiful harvest this summer, in both gardens... and may yours be a labor of love!

Some never learn so just say: I told you so Ed, my neighbor next door, has had a busy time lately, saying that I never learn. We traded our one car only to have Ed voicing his opinion that I never learn. My problem, according to Ed is that, I traded my car at this time of year.

I would have gotten a better deal in January or even at Christmas.

When I said that I wasn’t ready to trade my car earlier, he said that’s the point, some people never learn the best time to do things.

Ed also likes to tell me, “I told you so!” I was telling Ed that I was looking up hymn lyrics on the internet and there was an advertisement for learning how to sing better. It is voice lessons right from my computer. I told Ed that I was thinking about taking those lessons. Ed was against it, just as if, I was using his money for the voice lessons. He reminded me that, I was taking violin lessons when I first moved next door. It is Ed’s opinion that those lessons were a waste of time and money he says that I never got any better at the violin.

Ed told me that at my age, I must be running out of breath, and that my voice shouldn’t be used for singing. His final comment was, “If

I try to live by making decisions on faith not fear. ‘What-ifs,’ never end and not everything turns out for the best, but I think it is better to try something than do nothing.

I try new things trusting that God can bless my attempts to learn.

It has been said that fear is the number one tool used by Satan to keep us from being in God’s will, and growing in the fullness of life that could be ours.

Everyone faces real

fears like job loss, results of health tests that could mean cancer or some other serious issue. God would have us face our fears with the truth of his word. The Bible says, “Fear not, for I am with you.” Fear is less powerful when we remember God loves us. Like a loving parent, he will not leave us or forsake us.

Unlike our earthly parents, God has everything we need. He never sleeps and promises to help us through our fears and difficulties.

Fear is dissolved in God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. We remember those who trusted God. Daniel probably went into the lion’s den with fear but came out without a scratch. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego must have felt fear facing the fiery furnace.

They trusted God in their fear and didn’t even smell of smoke when they came out of the furnace unharmed.

God is always greater than our fear.

Habitat takes national approach Habitat for Humanity Canada has launched an entirely new way for Canadians to engage in the mission of Habitat, travel, and give back to Canadian communities.

Through Canada Builds, Habitat for Humanity Canada will send teams of volunteers to a variety of locations nationwide to support the construction of Habitat homes.

“Since 2006, we’ve had the tremendous support of thousands of Canadians who have travelled abroad through Habitat for Humanity Global Village to play an essential role in the completion of Habitat projects internationally,” details Rick Tait, senior director of Global Village at Habitat for Humanity Canada. “But many communities in Canada could also benefit from this type of support – places that have a limited build season due to short summers, disaster stricken areas, and rural communities that might not have the volunteer base required to complete Habitat projects as quickly as otherwise possible. Working with likeminded Canadians, Canada Builds seeks to provide this support.”

With upcoming Canada Builds trips announced to Whitehorse, communities of Prince Edward Island and Slave Lake, Alberta, which was ravaged by wildfire in 2011, Habitat for Humanity Canada launched the program on a build in Calgary, chosen due to the extensive damage to homes caused by flooding last June.

The volunteer team is comprised of employees from Canada Builds’ founding partner, Genworth Canada. The team includes Genworth employees

who traveled from the Greater Toronto area as well as local representatives, all committed to helping alleviate the even greater need for affordable housing present in Calgary.

“Genworth Canada has been a longstanding partner of Habitat and has been essential to the launch of Canada Builds by providing multi-year financial support, giving Canadians a whole new way to engage in the mission of Habitat while building meaningful connections and strengthening communities,” says Tait.

“Bringing the concept of Habitat’s Global Village program to Canada is a venture we strongly believe in and we look forward to working with Habitat to make affordable homeownership a reality for more Canadians,” adds Debbie McPherson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Genworth Canada. “This initiative will also provide unique opportunities for our employees to experience the impact such builds can have not only on one Canadian family, but on an entire community.”
