CA$H BAC K FOR CHRISTMAS

Funding for SK. ag. projects

ALL FIRED UP – The Parkland Regional College recently held a tour of its Emergency Services Training Site near Melville for area First Nations representatives. “We wanted to showcase what level of training we offer, and I think we opened some eyes,” says Shelley Cherney, Parkland College’s Coordinator of Emergency Services. “This is the only full-time professional firefighting training program in Saskatchewan...” The 14-week program provides a comprehensive blend of theory and practical skills required for entry-level firefighter positions.

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart have announced more than $600,000 in funding for 63 producer-led agriculture research demonstration projects. The funding is provided through the Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) program. “Our government understands that investments in research contribute directly to the success of our producers and our overall economy,” Ritz says. “We will continue to partner with the Province of Saskatchewan on initiatives that will help increase producer productivity and grow the agriculture industry.” ADOPT is designed to accelerate the transfer of new technologies to Saskatchewan’s farmers and ranchers. The program provides funding to producer groups to evaluate and demonstrate new agriculture practices and technologies at the local level. “As demonstrated in this year’s budget, our government is committed to making sure Saskatchewan is a leader in agriculture research,” Stewart adds. “Projects such as these will help farmers adopt new and innovative technologies and help us meet the objectives of the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth.” The 2013 Saskatchewan Agriculture budget included a record $27.7 million for agriculture research, an increase of more than 104 per cent since 2007. More docs in Saskatchewan than ever before: SIPPA Saskatchewan residents have better access to physician care, thanks to fourteen more doctors who are now practising in Saskatchewan. These doctors, who entered the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment (SIPPA) in January, recently passed all of the program’s requirements and are now practicing in

communities throughout the province. “We continue to recruit our own medical graduates from Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine, but we appreciate and rely on physicians from outside our own borders,” Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health Randy Weekes says. “I’m very pleased these interna-

tionally trained doctors have passed their assessment and are now providing care to Saskatchewan residents, further stabilizing the physician workforce throughout the province.” In addition to the new doctors from the January SIPPA program who are now practicing medicine, the May SIPPA intake is completely

full. Each intake allows 30 international medical graduates (IMGs) to apply to the program. A total of 25 of these IMGs are from Canada; four from South Africa, and one from India. Many of the candidates were trained in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, the Philippines and Iran. While all of them were successful at obtaining a seat in SIPPA,

they still have to successfully complete the program over the next few months. If successful they will move forward to the Clinical Field Assessment phase of the program in ten health regions around the province. “This is certainly encouraging. Continued on Page 2.
