Three-quarters of crop in the ground Seeding progress has doubled in the province thanks to relatively good conditions. Seventy per cent of the crop is now in the ground, up from 35 per cent last week and well ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) seeding average of 55 per cent for this time of year.

The southeast region is the most advanced with 82

per cent of the crop seeded. Seventy-seven per cent is seeded in the northeast, 72 per cent in the southwest, 66 in the west-central region, 65 per cent in the northwest and 53 per cent in the east-central region.

Rainfall was reported in some areas, ranging from trace amounts to 28 mm in the Biggar area.

The majority of the prov-

ince remains in need of rain to replenish the topsoil moisture as warm temperatures and strong winds continue to dry fields. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on crop land are rated as 47 per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 31 per cent

adequate, 46 per cent short and 23 per cent very short.

Crops are slowly emerging but are mostly in good condition despite damage from strong winds and lack of moisture. The majority are either at or behind normal developmental stages for this time of year.

Pastures and hay land remain dry and growth has been slow. Pasture condi-

tions are rated as 22 per cent good, 40 per cent fair, 28 per cent poor and 10 per cent very poor.

SaskPower reports 34 cases of farm machinery contacting electrical equipment in the last week, bringing the total in May to 119. SaskPower reminds producers that most farm-related incidents happen during the

Young workers should be aware of rules As young people wrap up the school year and start applying for summer jobs, they should remember to look into the employment and safety rules that apply to young workers.

Most importantly, 14- and 15-year-old workers need to have their Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) Certificate of

Completion before they can enter the workforce.

The course teaches young workers about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Students will learn the basics about employment standards and workplace health and safety.

“Although this information is useful for anyone, it is targeted towards

young people getting ready to start their first job,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said.

“We want young workers to feel comfortable enough to ask questions when they don’t understand what is expected of them and refuse work they feel is unsafe.”

Young workers may

apply for jobs and go for interviews before completing the course. They may not start work until they have provided their employer with a copy of their Certificate of Completion. Young workers must also provide written consent from their parent or guardian.

Employers are required to keep certificates and par-

ental consent on file.

Young workers are only allowed to work limited hours during the school year. They are also not permitted to work in certain industries under Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

More than 7,800 people received their Certificate of Completion between

April 2017 and March 2018. The Employment Standards Division of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety also delivered two webinars for teachers who use the YWRCC in the classroom.

Digital X-ray upgrades in five rural hospitals X-ray equipment in five rural community hospitals is being upgraded from film to digital images, supporting quicker diagnosis and improved care for patients.

“Our government is committed to improving access to high-quality medical imaging across Saskatchewan,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “Digital images save time for physicians and patients, and result in patients receiving their x-ray results quicker than ever before.”

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is in the process of digitalizing the x-ray equipment in Lanigan, Rosthern, Wadena, Watrous and Wynyard. It is anticipated that full implementation, including equipment upgrades and renovations,

will be complete in fall 2018.

Digital images can be quickly shared between physicians and specialists across the province.

A diagnostic interpretation by a radiologist can then be provided within minutes. This eliminates the need to transport film images to be read by a radiologist, which can take days.

“This technology investment is an important step for Saskatchewan Health Authority as we begin to fulfill the vision of better co-ordination of health care services across the province,” Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Scott Livingstone said.

“As one organization, our intent is to improve systems so employees and physicians can focus on what they do best, which is patient care and sup-

port. By improving access to medical imaging, we are on the right path of ensuring our province’s hospitals are able to coordinate their services to ensure patients receive highquality, timely health care, closer to home.”

The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $500,000 to upgrade x-ray equipment from analog radiography to digital radiography in these five sites.

The remaining $500,000 in matching funding (approximately $100,000

per site) was provided by local health foundations to cover the costs associated with the equipment upgrade, infrastructure and renovations.

“Strong community support helps our health system meet the need for specialized services across Saskatchewan,” Ottenbreit said. “Our government thanks the local communities, and their respective health foundations, whose generosity is helping make these digital x-ray upgrades a reality.”

Lake Of The Prairies - North 61.5 sq. km.

ake of the Prairies is a large, long lake situated in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Originally, the lake was created as a water storage lake to manage the risk of flooding elsewhere. A great fishery has been an added bonus. Lake of the Prairies supports a high quality walleye fishery.

Aside from the various perch, pike, bass, and carp, the big draw of the lake is walleye. In fact, Lake of the Prairies is now considered the second largest fishery in Manitoba, and one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada.

John Boyd, from For Your Walleyes Only, says that how you fish Lake of the Prairies will change depending on several factors. “How and what to use depends on the time of year and weather conditions,” he advises. If it’s windy, while it may not be ideal conditions for anglers, it’s perfect for walleye. They’re far more active in wavy water, and in anything murky. They’re very sensitive to light, and wind, sediment and low light conditions are easier for them to manage. Boyd says that on windy days, bottom bouncers and spinners with leeches or night crawlers are good. That’s not to say that walleye can’t be caught on calm days.

“On a calm day, trolling using Rapellas can be an option,” Boyd suggests. “I prefer vertical jigging using 1/8 oz chartreuse, orange, green or pink jigs with frozen minnows, leeches or crawlers.”

Boyd notes that underwater factors are important, too. “Structure plays a key role, and at Lake of the Prairies you have some great options.” Boyd has a few favourite spots for setting up for the day.

He suggests that the Roblin Bridge is a good spot from May to June, but warns anglers to be careful of snags under the bridge. “The hydro lines south of the bridge have been known to be a good spot from May to July,” he adds. Boyd also likes a spot down the lake towards Pyotts, which he says fishes well in July and August. Also, north, by Togo Bridge, seems to be good from May to the end of June, he says. While walleye are the most popular target, they are by no means the only fish here.

Nothing works. Help! — Charlene B., via email DEAR CHARLENE: Pickles sounds like a wonderful cat, if a real handful! Most healthy cats love jumping up to higher perches — it’s a natural instinct. And it’s clear that Pickles is very healthy and comfortable with his new home.

How do you balance keeping Pickles happy and keeping him off the dinner

table? The play perch is good — try putting it into a different location, perhaps where sunbeams fall across it. Help him associate it with good things by placing a favorite treat on the perch while calling him. Purchase a window perch or a wall-mounted perch you can put up really high.

Meantime, keep searching for a “warning” noise he responds to. Sometimes just a hiss will work.

Shaking a coffee can filled with coins may work. Use the same warning noise each time, so that he associates the noise with “get off.” Training may take time, but be patient.

My spouse passes gas throughout the night. He claims that he is asleep and unaware of any problems. I say that this is a voluntary activity and that he should be able to control it. Who is right? — D.B. ANSWER: He is.

Passing gas while asleep is entirely involuntary.

You probably are doing so also while asleep. If you are really bothered by his intestinal gas, then you can work on some dietary changes, including avoiding carbonated beverages and limiting foods that commonly cause the intestinal bacteria to produce gas, such as beans, bran, cauliflower and cabbage.

In some people, excess gas production can be a sign of mild lactose intolerance.

In 1-quart saucepan, heat 1-inch water to boiling over high heat; add peas and heat to boiling.

I can understand not shaking hands with visitors in an ICU, but if I am going to be examining a patient, it’s polite to shake hands. Of course, I wash my hands before and after every exam, and hospitalized patients and their visitors should wash their hands frequently as well.

Place pans on 2 oven racks, and bake crisps 12 to 15 minutes or until golden, rotating pans from upper to lower racks halfway through baking for even browning. Cool crisps in pans on wire racks. Store crisps in tightly covered container or large selfsealing plastic bag up to 1 week. Makes 80 crisps.

I try to drink the recommended amount of water each day, but sometimes I want a healthy alternative.

What you drink is as important as what you eat. Many beverages contain added sugars and offer little or no nutrients, while others may provide nutrients but too much fat and too many calories. Here are some tips from myplate.gov to help you make better beverage choices.

Drink water Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Regular soda, energy or sports drinks, and other sweet drinks usually contain a lot of added sugar, which provides more calories than needed.

How much water is enough?

Let your thirst be your guide. Water is an important nutrient for the body, but everyone’s needs are different. Most of us get enough water from the foods we eat and the beverages we drink. A healthy body can balance water needs throughout the day.

Drink plenty of water if you are very active, live or work in hot conditions, or are an older adult.

A thrifty option Water is usually easy on the wallet. You can save money by drinking water from the tap at home or when eating out.

Manage your calories Drink water with and between your meals.

Adults and children take in about 400 calories per day as beverages — drinking water can help you manage your calories.

Kid-friendly drink zone Make water, low-fat or fat-free milk, or 100 percent juice an easy option in your home. Have readyto-go containers filled with water or healthy drinks available in the refrigerator. Put them in lunch boxes or backpacks for easy access when kids are away from home.

Depending on age, children can drink 1/2 to 1 cup, and adults can drink up to 1 cup of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice each day.

Don’t forget your dairy When you choose milk

or milk alternatives, select low-fat or fat-free milk or fortified soymilk. Each type of milk offers the same key nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and potassium, but the number of calories are very different. Older children, teens and adults need 3 cups of milk per day, while children ages 4 to 8 need 2-1/2 cups and children 2 to 3 years old need 2 cups.

Enjoy your beverage When water just won’t do: Enjoy the beverage of your choice, but just cut back. Remember to check the serving size and the

number of servings in the can, bottle or container to stay within calorie needs.

Select smaller cans, cups or glasses instead of large or supersized options.

Water on the go Water is always convenient. Fill a clean, reusable water bottle and toss it in your bag or briefcase to quench your thirst throughout the day.

Reusable bottles also are easy on the environment.

Try this healthy recipe for a Citrus Coconut Water Refresher. It’s a delicious way to incorporate fresh fruit juices and the nutritious benefits of coconut water into your daily diet.

Coconut water is the juice found naturally in the center of a young, green coconut. It contains 94 percent water and very little fat.

The water is freshest when it comes directly from the coconut. Simply press a straw into the soft
