While we were very fortunate to have a fireplace in the basement, I did not have any regular firewood and therefore had to burn a great deal of lumber I had purchased to build a small hothouse in the spring. Cars and trucks barely started without having the block heater plugged in. Upon going to grocery store to buy some supplies as well as the gas station, only to find out that they are both closed due to the power outage. All I had really wanted to buy was some firewood and gas, but most businesses were told to stay closed. No power, no heat, no gas, no food and no help. When the power was finally restored I was watching the news and was considering myself quite fortunate compared to others.

While this is not a topic that very many people want to openly discuss, I want to ask you to consider what a blessing it is to have your needs covered in an emergency. Several years ago I learned my lesson. While living on an acreage outside of Calgary with my wife and newborn boy, it was the middle of a very cold January when the power was knocked out by a major accident. Now as we all know minus thirty five is already a contender for staying warm and starting vehicles and such. This particular outage was to last for three whole days and so was the temperature. The

When the ice storms hit different parts of the east coast and Ontario and their power was out for many weeks, a very different opinion about the severity they were going through helped me repent of the indifference I had about not only my own emergency preparedness, but other families as well. It may very well have been the single idea behind us starting Problem Solved INC. Asking a question like--- What do I need to be prepared for at least a week if everything were shut down? The answers can be simple and attainable, and is wise to be pondered. A couple gallons of gas, a small generator, small stack of firewood, forty eight bottles of water, and a full cupboard… will avoid so much less stress and would have kept me calm those cold dark nights. Most people do not can their own foods any more, but there are freeze dried foods now that last up to

25 years without decay and cost little more than going to the grocery store. It’s an investment into being prepared for years to come. The rest of the supplies come just from having awareness that simple power outages can create severe problems. We sell a great deal of supplies for all manner of problems, and this comes from a very real experience I have had and it brings us a lot of joy to think people can say, “The power is out, but I’m not worried about it!” Contact us if would like help.

Diabetes educator on the frontline of care Wynyard, Sask. (Nov 2., 2015) – During Diabetes Awareness Month this November, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) encourages all Canadians living with diabetes to celebrate National Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Day on Nov. 4 in honour of the important work carried out by diabetes educators.

Working as a pharmacist led Kendra Townsend of Wynyard, SK to become a CDE in 2006. “We were two hours away from any alternative diabetes education

program that was offered formally,” she says. “In rural settings, that can be a big problem for a lot of the patients and it left a lot of First Nations people without options, because they don’t always have the means to travel to a CDE.” Townsend, who works at Townsend’s Drugs in Wynyard (a part of Rubicon Pharmacies, Canada, Ltd.), likes that her CDE work provides an opportunity to work with other health-care providers in the area.

She and another colleague became CDEs

together and she has become very passionate about the work. “I find that diabetes is such a complex disease that patients really need help sorting out how to proceed with diabetes care at diagnosis or during a major crisis. Having a CDE can really have a positive impact on people’s lives,” she says.

When Townsend first received her CDE designation, she admits to thinking like a pharmacist with some diabetes experience. Now she finds she thinks like a CDE with some medi-

cation expertise. Her viewpoint has shifted to being much more patient-centric. “A lot of [the work] is sitting down with patients and removing the stigma that they’ve caused diabetes or made it worse themselves,” she says. “It’s not something they’ve done right or wrong, but a journey where we can work together to make positive changes.”

Royal Saskatchewan Museum launches provincial fossil contest Saskatchewan needs a provincial fossil and students are going to help select it. Using educational resources provided by the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM), students will explore Saskatchewan’s geological and paleontological history. Students are then invited to submit a video in support of their top candidate and could win a visit from an RSM paleontologist.

“The history of life in Saskatchewan is preserved in our fossils,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said. “Saskatchewan’s fossils are of remarkable value to scientists, they are a source of great fascination to our residents and tourists, and fossil discoveries are a source of pride for many Saskatchewan communities. Designating a provincial fossil will help bring attention and rec-

ognition to these aspects of our province’s natural heritage.”

In the spring of 2016, Saskatchewan will choose an official provincial fossil to represent our rich paleontological history. From mid-November until May, the public can visit the RSM to see the provincial fossil exhibit where they will learn more about the fossil candidates. In the spring of 2016, voting will open provincewide online with the new Saskatchewan Provincial Fossil to be announced in May. To engage students, Grade 7 classrooms from across the province are invited to enter the Saskatchewan Provincial Fossil Video Contest.

Students participating in the contest will learn about the fossils on the provincial fossil candidate list, choose the one they think would best

represent Saskatchewan and create a video to argue their case. The videos entered into the contest will be posted online and used to help promote and build excitement about the candidates for Saskatchewan’s provincial fossil. The class with the winning video entry will receive a special gift and a visit to their classroom or school by a RSM paleontologist.

In connection with the video contest, the RSM has developed an Inquiry Lesson Plan for teachers to help students explore their knowledge of rocks, minerals and fossils. Classroom research about Saskatchewan paleontology is supported by French and English resources on the museum website.

“The Royal Saskatchewan Museum has a long tradition of providing outstanding education programs for the

youth of this province,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “I encourage all Grade 7 classes to learn more about our province’s rich fossil history and share their voice about how it should be represented.”

A wide variety of educational programs targeted to students from Pre-K to Grade 8 are available at the RSM yearly from October to June. High school, English as a Second Language, and adult learning groups are encouraged to contact the RSM for specialized programming. SAUERKRAUT DUMPLINGS A traditional fall dish for sauerkraut lovers!

•2 (14-1/2-ounce) cans Frank’s Bavarian-style sauerkraut, undrained* •1/4 cup water •3/4 cup Bisquick Reduced-Fat Baking Mix •1 teaspoon baking powder •1/3 cup fat-free milk In a medium saucepan, combine undrained sauerkraut and water.

Bring mixture to a boil.

Emergency kits for cars: a real must The mere mention of winter driving brings to mind blizzard conditions, cars in ditches and unexpected engine problems. Preparing an emergency kit is a great way to ensure your peace of mind when heading out to tackle those icy roads.

Make sure you keep a complete winter-driving emergency kit in your car trunk. It should contain the following items: • A shovel, scraper and snow brush

• Bottled water and non-perishable foods (energy bars) • Matches stored in a watertight package • Booster cables • Blankets • Flares • A warm change of clothes for all family members • Windshield washer fluid • Salt, sand or nonclumping cat litter

• A tow cable • A knife (to cut a jammed seat belt) • A fire extinguisher designed for gasoline and oil fires • An up-to-date and illustrated first-aid manual • A whistle (to signal your location in low-visibility conditions) • A candle in a deep metal can • A hand-crank flashlight or battery-powered

This long list may seem rather extreme right now, but if a breakdown or accident happens, you’ll be glad you were so well organized. And don’t forget that you can also use this emergency kit to help other people who are in trouble.

What is a winter-blend gasoline?

Service stations in areas where temperatures vary widely offer consumers different types of gasolines, depending on the season.

Winter-blend gasoline is specifically designed to improve your car’s performance when the mercury drops dramatically.

Evaporation To create seasonal gasoline blends, manufacturers calculate the Reid vapour pressure (RVP). This index reflects the evaporation rate of the gasoline and should be around 9 lb/in2 in summer and 12 lb/in2 in winter. A higher RVP

index indicates a greater amount of evaporation of volatile compounds that are harmful to the environment. The lower the RVP index, the higher the production cost of the gasoline.

The advantages In addition to meet-

ing the ideal RVP index in cold weather, winter gasoline blends contain additives that are designed to optimize several functions.

• They make starting the engine easier.

• They eliminate deposits that accumulate

in the fuel system and intake valves.

• They prevent fuel lines from freezing.

• They help ensure optimal engine performance.

• They lower the risk of having fuel tank problems.

In North America, there are more than 20 gasoline blends to meet various government standards. Most are designed to control emissions that contribute to air pollution and improve air quality.

Storing your summer tires You are probably very proud of having bought some of the best winter tires on the market for your car or light truck. You know the value of being more careful than sorry, and that is a good way of looking at winter driving. But there is one slight problem: what will you do with the summer tires you have just taken off?

If you are lucky, the tire dealer who has sold you your winter tires will offer a storage service for the summer tire at a reasonable price. You can trust him or her, as most dealers have proper storage space kept at the proper temperature for tires.

They also have a good system of keeping track of the tires so that there is very little chance of someone else driving away with them next spring.

On the other hand, if you plan to store your own tires in your garage or in your backyard shed, there are a few little things you should know. First of all, your summer tires should be stacked horizontally, one overlapping the other. They should not be stored standing on their treadware. That goes for inflated tires mounted on rims too!

Next, make sure your summer tires are not in a highly heated place or in direct contact with sun rays. Both will harm the rubber. And don’t let water reach them, as it might turn into ice and damage the tires. It is not a bad idea to keep them in the bags provided by the tire dealer. Follow these guidelines and your tires ought to still be in good shape next spring!

Change those wipers and clean those windows before winter Living in Canada inevitably means dealing with winter. Yet, winter might not be same for all of us, from coast to coast.

Nonetheless, even our

milder regions see snow and freezing rain from time to time. Winter driving is a challenge whenever that happens, but the stress can be eased with a bit of pre-cold preparation. Being able to see through the windows properly is a basic element of being ready.

If you really want to

play it as safe as possible, there are two important pieces of advice that will help you to see better in any situation. First of all, change your wiper blades, even if they still seem to be good. Try to get wiper blades specifically made for winter.

These are recognizable by the rubber envelope

that encloses the tension mechanism on the wiper blade. But before you install new blades, make sure the windshield has been properly cleaned and that it is free of any greasy residue from the road.

You could also clean the blades with fresh windshield washer before

installing them. By the way, it is recommended to clean the windshield and the blades at least a few times during the cold season in order to wash away the greasy film that accumulates with time.

The second thing to do is to clean the inside of the windows and windshield with a proper

glass cleaner. By doing this, you will eliminate any greasy film that can contribute to glare when driving on very sunny days — in winter, the sun is often low enough to produce just such a glare.

It will also reduce glare at night, when meeting another car’s headlight beams.

New and clean windshield wipers will help with winter visibility.

Mistakes made by car owners 1. Waiting until the first snowfall to think about having your winter tires put on is definitely not a good idea. Not only do you risk having an accident while driving without the proper tires, but it’ll also be hard to get a timely appointment at the garage.

2. Desperately trying to start a frozen engine by turning the key for too long can cause engine damage. Any single attempt to turn over your engine should not exceed 20 seconds. If it doesn’t start, wait two minutes before trying again.

3. Installing only two winter tires out of four is a risky way to try and save money — not to mention that it’s illegal in certain provinces. You may not be aware of just how dangerous this can be. In winter driving, the difference in traction between winter and summer tires can cause a drastic skid and an accident.

4. Keeping a spare container of windshield washer fluid in your vehicle is always a good idea. On a highway, when your windshield is being continually sprayed with wet, dirty snow from other vehicles, running out of washer fluid greatly reduces your visibility and your safety.

5. When their car lock is frozen, many people become impatient and use too much force when turning the key, which can end up breaking. To avoid this doubly frustrating situation, get yourself an alcohol-based de-icer and keep it in your purse or backpack.

Four fluids to check before winter arrives

Winter is practically on our doorstep, so it’s time to prepare your car for the rigours of freezing temperatures. The first step is to make sure your vehicle’s fluids are topped off and are of winter-grade quality. Listed below are the automotive fluids you should have checked by a service professional this fall.

1. Engine oil Experts recommend having your engine oil changed at the same time that you have your winter tires put on. Ideally, synthetic oil should be used because its composition improves engine performance while reducing fuel consumption.

2. Brake oil During the winter,

brakes are put to the test on a regular basis. Check the level of your brake fluid in the fall, before you start driving on icy roads. If it’s below the recommended amount, it’s probably because the brake pads are worn.

However, if it’s very low, it could be a sign of a leak in the braking system.

3. Transmission oil

In freezing temperatures, old transmission oil tends to lose its fluidity. Transmission oil that’s too thick can cause problems, especially when starting the engine. If necessary, have it replaced in order to reduce the risk of problems occurring and to prevent wear on mechanical components.

4. Antifreeze It’s essential that you have your antifreeze checked before winter arrives. If levels are low,

your vehicle’s cooling system could freeze up completely during spells of extreme cold.

Winter tires are a must during the cold Canadian winter No matter where you live in Canada, there is always a cold winter season. Winter tires, on the other hand, are made of rubber formulas that keep them softer and more flexible, even in very cold weather. They have a larger and more efficient footprint on cold pavement. So, even if you live and drive in an area of the country where the roads are typically void of snow or ice, it is still best to use winter tires. In fact, the best name for them would be “cold-weather tires”!

Birtle planning a new disc golf course The new North Ridge Disc Golf Course at Birtle, MB., has been designed.

The weekend of Oct. 17 and 18 Calvin Daniels and Trevor Lyons of Yorkton travelled to the Manitoba community to help lay out what will be developed into a full 18 basket Par 72 disc golf course over time.

“We’ve been working with Calvin for a few months on this project,” said Brenda McKay, Recreation & Wellness Director at Valley Recreation District.

“When he first contacted us about the possibility of a disc golf course for Birtle it seemed like a great fit because it is quite low cost to install and maintain, and almost everyone can participate.”

For those unfamiliar with disc golf, the game plays much like ball golf.

There are marked tees, players throw within eight-feet of the right of the tee-post, usually throwing a driver disc.

As might be expected drivers, which can be thrown forehand or backhand, are designed to fly farther than other discs.

A midrange disc is thrown from the fairway.

You simply throw again from behind the position where your driver landed.

Once close to the tonal target choose a putter.

Throw it so it hits the target and you have completed the ‘hole’.

The new course, which will begin development with the nice weather still this fall, will initially be a tonal course, with the longer term plan to convert it to baskets.

“By going to tonal targets to start with we can get the course up, and people playing,” said McKay. “We will be looking for grants and donations to add baskets as soon as possible.”

As far as a course, Daniels said this one is rather special to the region.

“We had a lot of room to work with, which is not always the case, so we could really expand

the distances with this course,” he said.

“It was fun not to just have Par 3s, with just one or two we could push out far enough to be a Par 4 maybe,” added Lyons.

It was the plan going in to create a Par 72 course with six par threes, six fours and six fives.

“That was a new challenge for us,” said Daniels. “It’s a fine line between what defines pars on any course. In disc golf there are players who can really throw a disc for distance off the tee, so to challenge big arms you need some distance.”

The longest distance on the course is just shy of 600-feet.

“That would not be a Par 5 on a flat course,” said Lyons, “but there are no flat areas on this course. It goes from gently rolling hills to a couple of spots that are nicely steep.

“The longest distance is over a rolling area which generally elevates from tee to target.

“And we have another spot on course where you tee-off straight up a steep hill for just about 300-feet to get around one of one two mandatories on the course. That it happens to be #16 means you’ve already been on course a while, so it should separate the men from the boys as they say.”

Lyons added the area has lots of grass, and except for fairways, it will be left to grow.

“Uncut grass is out-ofbounds. You add a stroke when you land in the grass, but then will just play from that spot,” he said, adding it keeps the

ruleset pretty simple for the course.

McKay said they hope

the course is challenging enough to bring serious disc golfers to Birtle.

“We hope there is a tourism element to the course,” she said.

But beginners should not be worried either.

“There is a plan to install alternate tees for newer players,” said McKay. “On a Par three the alternate tees will clip about 50-feet off the distance,” said Lyons. “On a Par 4 it’s be 100, and a Par 5 about 150-feet.”

The course is also going to be aesthetically interesting.

“It’s on the Birdtail River valley, so on the

back nine especially, you have a nice view of the town below,” said Daniels.

And, there is a plan to add some flavour too.

Forage Species Selection — An important choice Forages are multiyear crops. This makes the choice of seed blend that much more important as the decision influences the quality of forage produced for several years to come. Although the blending of a forage mixture requires a very individualized answer and should ideally be discussed with a forage agrologist, here are some points of consideration when selecting your forage mix: What is the intended end use?

Whether a stand is intended for high quality hay production, needed as a grazing paddock, or possibly used in a combination of haying and stockpiled grazing, does make a difference in the number and type of forage species chosen for the mixture. In general, a hay mixture will be less complex and may only include one legume such as alfalfa, or the combination of a legume and a grass such as alfalfa and hybrid brome. Simple mixtures make it easier for the harvest timing of all species present to coincide to achieve maximum hay quality. In a pasture stand, mixtures may include one legume and one or more grasses. Increased mixture

diversity can be desirable where soil variability requires species with different adaptations or where a broader harvest window is desired.

What are natural limitations on site?

Growing season precipitation is expected to increase from the drier brown soil zone to the moister black soil zone.

Beyond expected precipitation, local soil drainage is also a critical factor to consider. Where spring flooding normally lasts beyond two weeks, forage species selection needs to include more flood tolerant varieties.

Where soil salinity is present, saline tolerant forage species must be chosen. Weeds such as foxtail barley or kochia will easily overtake unless the chosen forage species have superior salinity adaptations.

Some examples of saline tolerant forages include slender wheatgrass, tall wheatgrass, tall fescue, smooth brome grass, and AC Saltlander. Note that AC Saltlander contains small amounts of the noxious weed downey brome.

What is the desired time of use?

In combination with the intended end use, time of use will further

inform the forage crop choice. A pure crested wheatgrass stand may be considered where an early spring pasture is required, but would not be suitable as stockpile forage. For late spring and summer grazing, species like meadow brome and alfalfa are often considered. These mid-season species usually lend themselves to stockpile grazing. Cicer milkvetch is particularly suited for late season grazing, as it maintains nutritional quality well beyond killing frost.

Consider personal preferences Personal preference may involve the choice of native species over tame, or whether the forage stand is intended as permanent cover or part of a short-rotation with annual crops. Legume choice and amount also often involves personal comfort levels around bloat risk. Finally, prior experiences with various species can influence preferences in terms of palatability and ease of harvest.

machinery around the course just to add a little something to the view, both for player, and for the community looking up at the course from below,” said McKay. With that in mind the designers incorporated the idea as they laid out the course.

“On #12 we planned to have the basket raised in the back of a half-ton truck,” said Daniels.

“The back of the truck will be filled with dirt and have vines growing out all over it.”

On the 510-ft #14 the old equipment again comes into play.

“It’s basically downhill all the way, after passing through a mandatory,” said Daniels. “At the basket we hope they install a tractor circle, with the target in the middle. It should be a neat visual as you throw and walk down the hill.”

The course should be ready for play soon after the snow melts in 2016.

“We’re working on it now, and can hardly wait

for the first rounds,” said McKay. “And hosting our first tournament will be fun. We hope we have a great turn out.”

Lyons, who will act as Tournament Chair on the May 28, event said it should be a great day.

“There are plans under way to have a tournament series across the Parkland in 2016,” he said. “We expect 15-20 events, and Birtle is likely to be the first of the run. Everybody will be eager to get back into disc golf in May, and with this great course, I’d expect an excellent response.”

On a larger basis disc golf is growing dramatically across Canada, North America and the world.

One of the weakest statements a person can make includes the very strong word “judgment.”

Typically, it’s either uttered, or increasingly in this day and age, tapped out via e-mail or instant message, by people pretending not to judge you (but you know they are.) That, or it’s uttered by someone who has all but tapped out for a time and informs you that you are free to judge them.

I once worked with an outstanding journalist

• On Nov. 10, 1775, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress passes a resolution that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces for the Continental Navy.

I don’t want to add to Lamar Odom’s despair by pointing out that his actions on reality TV and a four-day stay at a Nevada brothel will define him far more than his career as a NBA champion. He’s a smart man. Also, I cannot claim to understand what his personal motivations were in going to this seeming extreme, since I have not talked with him and would not disturb him in any event.

My judgment on Lamar Odom is that he’s a good man.

Not today. Lamar Odom decided to take a portion of his wealth and go have a little fun after being tortured by the Kardashian clan and their despicable reality TV cartel for years. I try not to loathe people, but it’s been a real test not to loathe the Kardashians.

That he has survived this long is a testament to his strength.

This is for you guys out

there: If your wife filed for divorce, broadcast it on international TV, and defamed and disparaged you along the way, would you be upset? Assuming you would be, and that you had a friend there to ask what it would take to get you happy again, what would you reply? Well, Lamar Odom’s vision of nirvana was Kentucky Fried Chicken, T-bone steaks and women that he didn’t have to fight ex-boyfriends over and who didn’t feign interest for ratings on an obscure reality show that, sorry Kim and Khloe, nobody will ever care about or miss as soon as it’s gone.

There still are women like Mary Tyler Moore in this world who people don’t remember. The Kardashians may have “broken the Internet” but trust me ... they couldn’t have broken onto the set of “That Girl” or even “Rhoda.”

If you look down on Lamar Odom, leave him alone. He left sports, lost his spirit and survived.

Who are you to judge?

If you look up to Lamar Odom, extend your hand and help the man up. I certainly know which side I’m on.

HOLLYWOOD — Gary Busey’s recent behavior on “Dancing With the Stars” was deemed very odd by many, bordering on scary. His stints on “The Celebrity Apprentice 4 and 6” had us all believing he was a little off the beam due to that motorcycle accident that flung him headfirst into a wall, requiring his head to be wired to his neck with a cage around it to recover. The 71-yearold Oscar-nominated actor (for “The Buddy Holly Story” in 1978) went on to star in “Lethal Weapon” (‘87), “Point Break” (‘91), “The Firm” (‘93) and 133 other films.

After being eliminated from “Dancing With

the Stars” in his fourth week, Busey reported for work in Sacramento, California, on producer/ writer Rick Kuebler’s film “Mamaboy,” in which Busey plays a baseball coach whose star player is hiding the real reason he’s gained so much weight in his stomach area. Actors,

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A local pet charity is going to hold a Halloween-themed pet walk, where participants bring their dogs in costume to parade along a local street. My question is, do these kinds of charity events really help pets in need? They just seem like chichi see-andbe-seen social gatherings without any real purpose.

— Dan in Long Beach, California DEAR DAN: Charity events can do a tremendous amount of good for pets in need. Besides donations of food, blankets and other items, most shelters and nonprofits need cold hard cash in order to function.

These events can raise quite a bit of money.

Many pet owners join in walks like these just for fun, and I think that’s fine. They’re proud of their pet and want to show it off, and it’s a

great chance to socialize (as long as the dogs can handle large crowds).

However, if you’re also concerned about how your donation will be used, it doesn’t hurt to do some research first. What exactly does the charity support? (Some fund pet rescues or local shelters; others advocate for seniors and their pets, and so on.) How much of its funding goes directly to the cause being supported?

You can find the answer through watchdog groups like Charity Navigator (www. charitynavigator.org/), Guidestar (www.guidestar.org/Home.aspx) or the Wise Giving Alliance (www.give.org/). You also can check an approved nonprofit’s 990 tax forms from the IRS to see how efficiently donations are used.

If you’re still skeptical, save those funds and donate them directly to your local shelter, where you can ask someone how that money is used, and it generally travels the shortest path toward helping animals in need.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Terminator Genisys” (PG-13) — In the postrobot-apocalypse, human resistance leader John Connor (Jason Clark) sends his trusted comrade Kyle (Jai Courtney) back to 1980s to protect his mother from the machines. But what’s this?! The time-travel thingy done messed up, landing Kyle in an alternate timeline in the year 2017, where Sarah Connor (Emilia Clark) has already befriended the Terminator from T-2.

Also, a new app called Genisys will connect all of our data and devices, opening the door for machine takeover. That’s as much plot as can be coherently explained in

this four-car pile-up of a time-travel movie.

There are just so many Terminators. Putting the current-era “Ah-nuld” next to a computer-recreation of him in his prime 1980s form may not have been such a good idea. Back then, the Terminator was an icecold killer who could give you chills with a one-liner. Now the cybernetic assassin is more of a good-natured old pal, joking about what a tough guy he was and still kinda is.

“Trainwreck” (R) — Comedian Amy Schumer stars in her first leading-role in this raunchy romantic comedy that knowingly goes against rom-com trends.

Schumer’s character gets the traditionally male role of being the overthe-top-but-likable slob saddled with immature ideas about love and commitment. She ends

up having real feelings for a surgeon played by Bill Hader. He’s got the role of being there for the protagonist as they hilariously struggle to grow up and be in a healthy relationship — usually the woman’s job in this formula. Lebron James surprises everyone with his scenes (not cameos) as Hader’s friend and confidant.

It’s the best Judd Apatow-ish comedy out there, but Schumer shines as she should.

Hader is really hitting his mark with easy-going comedy and just the right amount of drama at just the right times. The ending doesn’t really support the rest of the film, but it’s an overall victory for people who want more perspectives in major comedies.

“Mr. Holmes” (PG) — Long after the height of his crime-solving career, the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) returns to England to find that the popular stories of his exploits are all wrong.

Now in his 90s, Holmes tends to his bees and worries over his diminishing mental powers.

Never truly able to retire, Holmes gets caught up in one more mystery with the help of a curious and observant young boy (Milo Parker). This isn’t the fists-of-fury Sherlock of Robert Downey Jr., nor is it the fast-talking defective detective played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

McKellen shows audiences a new angle on the familiar hero.

“Selfless” (R) — Damien (Ben Kingsley) is a mega-rich Manhattan mogul whose days are numbered thanks to cancer. Damien hears of a way for the rich and

powerful to cheat death by transferring their consciousness into a younger, healthier, more attractive body. So for the rest of the movie, Damien has Ryan Reynolds’ body.

•1-1/2 pounds sweet potatoes •1 tablespoon vegetable oil •Salt •Pepper •2 green onions Heat oven to 475 F. In small bowl, whisk soy sauce, hoisin, honey, vinegar, ginger and half of garlic until well-blended. Pour into gallon-size resealable plastic bag.

Add pork; seal bag and turn until pork is wellcoated. Set aside.

While pork marinates, peel sweet potatoes. Cut each into 1/2-inch-thick rounds. In large bowl, combine oil and remaining garlic. Add sweet potatoes, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.

Toss until well-coated.

Transfer pork from marinade to center of 18-by-12-inch jelly-roll pan, shaking any excess marinade off into bag.

Tuck tapered ends under pork to ensure even cooking. Arrange sweet potato rounds in single layer on pan around pork. Roast 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, transfer marinade to 2-quart saucepan. Heat to boiling on medium-high. Boil 3 minutes or until thickened and syrupy. Transfer half of marinade to small serving bowl; set aside.

Turn sweet potatoes and pork over. Brush remaining marinade on pork. Roast 10 to 15 minutes longer or until temperature on meat thermometer, inserted into thickest part of pork, registers 155 F and sweet potatoes are browned.

Cover pork loosely with foil and let stand 5 minutes.

Cut green onions crosswise into 3-inch-long pieces. Then, cut each piece lengthwise into very thin slices. Cut pork into 1/2-inch-thick slices.

Transfer pork and sweet potatoes to large platter. Garnish with green onions and serve with reserved marinade.

Serves 4.

I went to the hospital and was there for six days. They took an X-ray, which showed moderate facet arthropathy, mild degenerative disc disease and a mild compression fracture at T12.

ANSWER: Facet arthropathy is a term used by radiologists to describe arthritis in the back. Degenerative disc disease is very common, if not universal, in 83-year-olds. Both can cause back pain.

However, the “crack” you heard and the finding of a compression fracture are more troubling. A compression fracture of a vertebra is

like what happens to a cardboard box if you put too much weight on top of it. The combination of a compression fracture, tingling and numbness is concerning. It’s time to go back and get re-examined. Compression fractures can lead to nerve compression.

Kidney, liver and heart problems can all cause swelling of the feet, but I think the most likely cause may be that you aren’t elevating your feet as much as before because of the back brace.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you explain the condition known as “stone shoulder”? I am a man, 67 years old, and I believe I have it. I spent 45 years as a TV news photographer, handling heavy cameras, tripods, etc. — B.J. ANSWER: “Stone shoulder” is a new one for me. Maybe you mean frozen shoulder, a condition also called “adhesive capsulitis.” It’s not a strictly accurate term, since the loss of movement the name implies is gradual. It starts with shoulder pain, often worse at night, lasting for months. Stiffness develops, and then the loss of shoulder movement can be severe.

A careful physical exam by a regular doctor, a rheumatologist or sports medicine doctor, or an orthopedic surgeon can make the

diagnosis. Often, the doctor will inject a steroid and anesthetic into the shoulder: The pain relief and improved movement within a minute make the diagnosis. I refer patients to physical therapy for a gradually increasing exercise regimen.

Sometimes, additional injections are necessary. In your case, I would worry about a rotator cuff tear or inflammation, which you
