Q: I love ABC’s new series “Blood and Oil.” The actor who plays Don Johnson’s son in the drama looks familiar.

The 30-year-old actor was a regular cast member on “Greek,” spent a season on “Californication” as Becca’s boyfriend who Hank couldn’t stand, was on “Once Upon a Time,” and “Chasing Life.” Now he plays Hap Briggs’ (Don Johnson) ne’er-do-well son, Wick, on the nighttime sudster. He recently wrapped on the feature film “My Dead Boyfriend,” which was directed by Anthony

Edwards and also stars Heather Graham, John Corbett and Gina Gershon.

Despite the star power of Don Johnson, Amber Valletta and Chace Crawford, ABC recently announced that it has cut back its original order of “Blood and Oil” from 13 episodes to 10, which could mean that this first season of “Blood and Oil” very well might be its last if there isn’t a drastic upturn in its ratings.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column responding to the reader whose cats will not use the litter box. I have three cats and two litter boxes, and they’re doing just fine. Here’s

what I use: I put a litter called “Feline Pine” in the boxes. It comes in pellets, which don’t weigh much, and you don’t have to use much, just cover the bottom of the pan. When the cats pee, the pellets turn into something like sawdust.

for the tip! Trying a completely different type of cat litter can help in the case of litter box avoidance. Some cats are turned off by scented litter, while others have an aversion to a litter’s texture. Future of agriculture industry complicated

The conditions of agriculture are always something of a roller coaster but what do those in the industry see in the near future?

Several questions looking at to the future of the industry were put to a panel at the Sask Grains Expo last Wednesday as part of their Grain Millers Har vest Showdown in Yorkton last week to find out what their views were; starting with whether there was a future for the family farm.

“Who and when did this ‘person’ set the size of a family farm?” responded producer Kristjan Hebert.

He noted in the United States there are farms with 50-70,000 acres still owned by a family.

“My definition of a

To excel means growing, said Kristjan.

“Inflation is three per cent, so if you don’t do something to get bigger you’re going to die,” he said.

Brennan Turner, president, Farmlead. com said “everybody has different expectations of a family farm.”

But one thing is a constant, making sure you are getting paid for your efforts on the farm. He said his grandfather always said it was a must “to pay yourself first,” and that remains important today.

That said, Turner said farm size changes the role of the farm owner.

“Once you go big it becomes much more of a managerial position,”

he said.

Stuart Smyth, Assistant Professor & Research Chair in Agri-Food Innovations, Un iver sit y of Saskatchewan said larger farms do require “increased management skills,” and a willingness to accept new technologies, whether familyowned, or not.

In terms of new tech Smyth said the next big

wave on the farm will be in the area of digital technologies.

“Agriculture is probably the last economy in North America to be hit by digital tech,” he said.

Whether a family farm, or not, climate change is a factor producers may have to deal with in the longer term Smyth said that may not be a disaster on the Canadian Prairies. It is likely to see the area more akin to the northern mid-west in the U.S., which would mean conditions more favourable for corn and soybeans, two crops already expanding into the region.

As an example Smyth said on a trip from Carlyle to Stoughton “and never lost sight of a corn field in that 30-miles.”

Hebert said “any new crop, or technology is exciting,” adding farm-

ers are good at adapting to such changes.

One thing that will be needed is a reliance on the science that comes before change, and Smyth said that trust is not what it once was among consumers.

“We’re seeing a whole push back against science in agriculture,” he said.

Turner said “it’s early incredible” how “misconstrued the perception is of what’s done on the farm.”

Smyth said farmers have to be more proactive in getting their side of the story on food production out to consumers, adding that means becoming “involved in social media.” As it stands now “the message they (consumers) get to hear is from the opponents.

“Farmers themselves have to get involved in the story.”

Work continues toward MB potash mine Russell – Key indicators provided by the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, highlight the positive impact that would accrue from development of the Russell-McAuley potash deposit, says Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Wally Melnyk.

“In our minds there is no question that a Manitoba potash project in our region would be a critical economic development for the province, the city of Winnipeg, and for our region” Melnyk says.

“There would be about $21 billion in overall provincial impact, including about $2 billion in royalties to the provincial government over the projected life of the project,” (40 years) he says.

Projections also include a total of about

$8.8 million of annual provincial payroll related taxes and about $4 million in annual property tax revenue. The projections are based on two million tonnes of annual production capacity, Saskatchewan potash industry documents and the Manitoba Potash Project Feasibility Study (1987), Melnyk said.

Russell – Binscarth Mayor Len Derkach says the investment and economic projections are both lifechanging and exciting. “There would be about 600 direct full-time jobs when the mine is up and fully operational and an additional 4,000 person years of construction related employment,” Derkach said.

“We are more than ready to prepare ourselves to meet the many changes and assume the increased responsibil-

ities inherent with such a massive development,” he said.

Confirmation by Manitoba Mineral Resources Minister Dave Chomiak in a recent Winnipeg Free Press story that two Saskatchewan firms, a major Minnesota player and a Chinese-Manitoba joint venture are in the running for the rights to develop a potash deposit near Russell, have increased local awareness and enthusiasm for the proposed mine.

The Mayor has once again called on the government to ensure that the successful bidder be one that will be committed to the development of the deposit within the province for the benefit of all Manitobans in essence we want to see the potash mined in Manitoba, processed in Manitoba and the fin-

ished product shipped out of Manitoba.

It has become very clear by the closure of a potash mine in New Brunswick by PCS and the reduction of potash production in Saskatchewan, that if awarded the bid, a Saskatchewan potash company would simply “ice” this project. This is not acceptable and does nothing for the economy of Manitoba!

Derkach once again confirmed his Councils support for a company interested and capable of developing this project as a mining, processing and marketing entity!

We are aware that such a proposal is before Government and we are prepared to support the Government in making this choice for the people of Manitoba!

confirmed that deliberations are down to two of the four entities that were short-listed and that the province was hopeful of being in a position to go into negotiations with a company in the very near future.

“DEAR ELF, I HOPE YOU HAVE A NICE WINTER” is the greeting written with a blue crayon in big cap letters and tucked into the makeshift mailbag tacked to the side of the padlocked door at the base of a gnarly ash tree.

For more than 20 years in Minneapolis, young friends of the endearing Lake Harriet tree elf have crouched down by the little wooden door, nimbly unlatched it and left handwritten letters and drawings inside a hollow, carved space of the tree. Returning two or three days later to the path around the city lake, they come to the “elf house” to find a response on a small piece of paper,

just to them.

Seasons change, and now eager children have to wait until next spring to open the miniature, magical door again. “I have moved home to my castle,” reads the engraved 1-inch sign above the threshold.

Maybe your family has already been scurrying around like busy elves getting ready for the impending arrival of winter -- washing windows, raking leaves and storing baseball bats and mitts.

Here are more weekend activities you can do together to shift gears into cooler weather and the holidays. * Make a “be prepared” kit filled with supplies to have on hand if lights go out during a winter storm. Cover a shoebox with paper, and decorate it with safety symbols, using markers and stickers. Fill it with

a flashlight, candles and matches, battery-operated clock and radio, and entertainment such as cards or small board games. * Update your family’s wallet photos by replacing old pictures with new school and informal photos. Send copies to proud grandparents, aunts and uncles. It’s a good time to take holiday card photos, too. * Sort through closets and drawers. Put on some music, and have your kids stage an impromptu outerwear “fashion show” to find out which sweaters, jackets and boots still fit and which don’t. Donate useable, clean clothing

and drop it off together. * Discuss ways you can volunteer and participate at your child’s school. I’ve learned the hard way that the secret to a hassle-free holiday cooking is to plan ahead. For large holiday meals, the freezer is definitely your friend. Almost everything from appetizers and side dishes to desserts can be prepared and frozen ahead of time. Planning ahead for the holidays also saves money, because you can buy your holiday menu items as they go on sale, prepare them and freeze them.

I know that ready-tobake pie crusts and premade pies are readily available at most grocery stores, but during the holidays, I love everything to be homemade.

I’ve found that by using my food processor, I can make a flaky pie crust that takes only a few minutes to process and can be frozen until needed.

3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 1/2 cups butter-flavored shortening sticks, chilled and cut into cubes 1/4 cup ice-cold water, plus 1 tablespoon

1. In the bowl of a food processor, blend the flour and salt. Add shortening, a few cubes at a time, pulsing 3 or 4 times to combine after each addition. In a small bowl, combine water, vinegar and egg. Slowly add the water mixture to the flour mixture, a tablespoon at a time, pulsing 2 or 3 times after each addition until some of the dough forms into a ball.

2. Scrape the dough out on to a lightly floured cutting board. You should be able to gently press any remaining pieces of the dough into a ball. Handle the dough as little as possible or it will become tough. Divide dough into two equal parts. Gently flatten into round disk shapes and wrap them in plastic wrap.

3. If using the dough immediately, chill at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

Chilling allows the dough to relax, become more elastic, absorb any remaining liquids, and will ensure that the crust will be flaky.

sifted 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans 1 (9 inch) unbaked pie shell Whipped cream, optional 1. Heat oven to 350 F. In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs and butter together for 2 to 3 minutes. Add corn syrup, sugar and cocoa, and beat for 2 minutes. Add flour and salt, and mix until smooth.

Stir in the vanilla extract and the nuts.

3. Pour mixture into the pie shell. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes or until

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a CT scan due to broken ribs from a very recent fall. The scan revealed a large teratoma near my heart. I am 69 and was previously unaware of this formation. No suggestion has been given to me regarding further investigation or treatment of the teratoma. I am assuming it may have been present at birth and does not cause any problem. But now I am wondering if it should be monitored. Can a teratoma grow or migrate in the body? Any information on teratoma will be appreciated. -- S.S. ANSWER: A teratoma is a type of tumor of germ cells -- the cells that become eggs or sperm. They can occur within the testis or ovary, but also can occur outside the gonads. When they do, they usually are found in the midline of the body. A frequent place is the anterior superior mediastinum, in between the lungs and below the breastbone.

Teratomas usually are benign tumors, but some types can act like cancers.

Your tumor is unlikely to have been there since

birth. Nobody knows whether the germ cell that became a teratoma properly went into the gonads during development, or whether the cell left the gonad and then became a tumor. It is clear, however, that men with teratoma outside the gonads are at higher risk for developing testicular cancer later on.

Teratomas, being derived from germ cells, are capable of creating any tissue. Teeth and hair are sometimes found inside teratomas.

I am very surprised you haven’t been recommended for surgical removal. Surgery is usually successful at curing teratoma. They certainly can grow, and occasionally become very large.

I would certainly recommend seeing an oncologist (cancer specialist).

Thoracic (chest) surgeons operate on this area. It may be that the position is difficult, but a surgeon should still evaluate you, in my opinion.

DEAR DR. ROACH: How is it that, at age 67, I’d never heard about the abomination called scabies? Last year, I was rubbing cream onto my aged mother’s rash, and now I have this disgusting infestation on my body!

Why haven’t people been advised of this scourge!

ANSWER: Scabies, sometimes just called, “the itch,” is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and is very common, with an estimated 300

million people infected worldwide. It is transmitted person-to-person by direct contact.

The major symptom of scabies is itching, often very severe and usually much worse at night. Itching begins about six weeks after the first infection, sooner if you have been infected before.

Often, the hardest part is figuring out the diagnosis, because a lot of people don’t know about this condition. When the

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” (PG-13) -- It’s the final installment of the extra-large trilogy about an extrasmall hero. Defeating the vicious dragon Smaug (voiced and motioncaptured by Benedict Cumberbatch) has vacated its big ol’ pile of gold, but now there’s some conflict over who gets to have a big ol’ pile of gold.

Turns out that Thorin (Richard Armitage), leader of the heroic dwarves accompanying

However, no computer can yet replicate the feel of the ornate sets and masterful practical effect in the earlier “Lord of the Rings” movies.

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (PG-13) -Two Cold War agents from opposite sides of the Berlin Wall have to collaborate to take down an evil crew bent on kicking off World War III. American agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill, “The Man of Steel”) buddies up with Russian agent Kuryakin (Armie Hammer, “The Lone Ranger”) in this modded-up reboot of the

‘60s TV show of the same name.

Guy Ritchie made his reputation bringing cool, brassy style to low-level Brit gangsters, and he makes a cool retro style out of something that could have been laughably irrelevant. Since James Bond has grown kinda serious (but still awesome), this jaunt offers a lighter side to slick espionage.

“Meru” (R) -- Ever wonder why people who climb Everest and other massive mountains tend to go up the easy side?

For extreme climbers and best pals Jeremy Chin, Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk, their dream was to scale the roughest side of them all, a sheer climb called the

overnight.

4. About 2 1/2 hours before serving or early in day: Place duckling quarters, skin-side up, on rack in 15 1/2-by-10 1/2inch roasting pan. Roast in 350 F. oven 2 hours.

5. About 15 minutes before duckling is done, brush with soy sauce, then honey; continue roasting until duckling is golden and tender.

Serve duckling hot with Plantain Chips. (To serve duckling cold, cover and refrigerate duckling.)

Serves 4. * Each serving: About 510 calories, 40g fat, 119mg cholesterol, 1,410mg sodium.

2. Remove peel from 2 unripe plantains.

With vegetable peeler or knife, slice plantains into paper-thin slices.

Fry a handful of plantain slices at a time, about 30 seconds, or until golden and crisp. With slotted spoon, remove slices to paper towels to drain. Sprinkle with salt.

Repeat with remaining slices.

3. Since Plantain Chips are not served hot, it is not necessary to keep them warm. Store in tightly covered container at room temperature until ready to serve. Serves 4. * Each serving: About 250 calories, 11 g fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 70 mg sodium.

PLANTAIN CHIPS 1. In 3-quart saucepan over medium heat, heat 1 inch salad oil to 375 F. (Or heat oil in electric skillet set at 375 F.)

Shark’s Fin on Meru Peak in the Himalayas. They tried and failed once in 2008 -- but not for lack of grit. The movie can generate some good feelings, but eventually too much sugary sentiment sprinkled over such squalid settings rings false.

HOLLYWOOD -In September, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that Warner/ Chappell Music had never acquired a valid copyright for the song â&#x20AC;&#x153;Happy Birthday.â&#x20AC;? The melody was composed in 1893 by schoolteacher Patty Smith Hill and her sister Mildred. In 1935, the Summy Company registered a copyright for the lyrics. In 1988, the copyright, which was supposed to last until 2030, was bought by Warner/ Chappell for an estimated $5 million. Movie companies and TV shows using the song had to pay from $700 to $5,000 for its

use. To date itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amassed an estimated $50 million. Almost every talkand magazine show sang the song after the ruling because they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to pay a royalty.

But hold on ... Warner/ Chappell is appealing the ruling, and in eight

months it could be overturned. This verdict could trigger a meaningful review for production companies that own other copyrights on registrations made decades ago, before recordkeeping was computerized.

Dallas is a great town.

The Ticket, by the way, is the best sports-radio station in America, hands down. Any station that broadcasts “Michael Irvin’s School Closings” is far and away very very funny. Also, YouTube its Trump vs. Cuban debate.

It only has a few thousand views, and that’s a shame. It’s an instant classic.

Dallas is like a lot of cities, but unlike any other. It’s as if Atlanta and Kansas City had a big baby. It’s everything you think Texas is and less.

It’s big and boisterous, but kind of polite when needed. It is positive and can-do (not Kansas City), but it also is truthful to your face and confident (not Atlanta).

And it has the Cowboys.

The Texas Rangers are not America’s team. The Dallas Stars aren’t even covered or discussed in San Antonio or Houston.

The Dallas Mavericks are Germany’s favorite team, maybe. But the Cowboys regulate.

So I conducted my own poll. I asked my mom what she thought when she thought of the Cowboys.

Here are five tips to get you started from the experts at Natural Resources Canada: 1. Accelerate gently Every time you put your foot on the gas pedal, you feed fuel to your engine the harder you apply the gas, the more fuel your engine uses and the more greenhouse gas emissions your car produces; 2. Maintain a steady speed and stick to the speed limit - It’s tempting to speed on the highway but by reducing your speed from 120 km/hour to 100 km/hour you can

lower your fuel consumption by about 20 per cent; 3. Anticipate traffic flow - Try to gauge the flow of traffic, keep a buffer zone between you and the vehicles in front of you, and drive at a consistent speed. Speed fluctuations use more fuel; 4. Coast to decelerate - Coasting to a stop is like getting a free ride.

When you notice that traffic ahead is slowing or stopped, remove your foot from the accelerator as soon as possible and coast instead of staying on the gas until the last second and slamming on the brakes. Your car uses little or no fuel when coasting.

5. EcoDriving can result in as much as a 25 per cent reduction in fuel costs or roughly $500 a year and $2,500 over five years for the average vehicle. Not only does eco-driving save fuel, but it also reduces maintenance costs.
