Thomas William Bates was born on March 27, 1933 at Theodore, SK; the eldest son of Raymond and Ann (nee Condon) Bates. He received his education at the Theodore School. Upon graduation from Grade 11 Tom ventured to northern Ontario where he drove Cat and logging trucks in the bush camps. Upon learning more money was to be made in mining, he went to work in a gold mine at Pickle Crow, ON in 1949. In 1951 Tom returned to Saskatchewan and began working for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation on construction crews out of Regina. He trained as a power lineman and after working all over the province, received his journeyman status. In 1954 he went to Estevan and later Watrous as crew foreman. In 1955 he became assistant district operator at Punnichy and then to Lucky Lake as district operator in 1956. In 1957 he was stationed at Glaslyn, in 1960 at Spiritwood and finally to Yorkton in 1968, where he remained until his retirement on December 31, 1983. Tom married Joy Sedgewick on December 21, 1951. The couple had five children: Patricia, Penny, Kevin, Brenda and Candace. Tom and Joy divorced in 1974. On October 5, 1976 Tom was united in marriage to Nettie Elaschuk and welcomed into the family Nettie’s children, Sharon and Wayne. In April of 1984 Tom started a career in farming and trucking, which he loved very much. He hauled gravel for the RMs, villages, towns, for road builders and for farmers. Tom loved the farm where he let all the grandchildren drive the 1/2 ton truck, four wheel drive tractor, gravel truck, the quads and snow machines, all as long as they never left the farm. Tom loved his church, he was a devout member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and he enjoyed the fellowship of St. Andrew’s Men’s Club. He was also a very social individual, Tom enjoyed the company of others from all walks of life. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, travelling and farming, as he found all these pastimes much more enjoyable than work. Tom passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 84 years of age. Predeceased by Nettie’s daughter Sharon Kishalowich and son Wayne Elaschuk. BOEHM - Ronald James Boehm passed away suddenly in his home on February 21, 2018 at the age of 69. Ronnie was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Marie Boehm, as well as his siblings, Helmut, Raymond, Clarence, Wilmer, Ruth and Fred. He will be remembered and missed by his brother, Walter, his extended family and countless friends. Ronnie was the youngest of eight children born to Henry and Marie, he grew up in Yorkton where he actively engaged in hockey, skating, golfing and fishing. He enjoyed watching the Cardinals play ball while being the loudest cheerer in the crowd. As a teenager he worked at Dairy Queen, which no doubt fueled his love for ice cream. As a young man, Ronnie attended Maurice Barber School to pursue his passion of becoming a barber. Upon completion of his training, he relocated to Montreal to work as a barber. After a few years Ron moved back to Yorkton, where he continued to work as a barber for many years. He loved to share stories about his experiences and clientele. One of Ron’s great joys was watching his favourite horse, Just so Justified, race. He loved showing pictures and retelling the events of the race to anyone who entered his apartment. He was often found at A&W visiting with his friends, where he would request a special, “Ron pot of coffee” which was code for “fresh coffee”. He enjoyed spending his time with friends and family and was always eager to share his past experiences and offer advice. Ron had 35+ years of sobriety which he was proud of. He spoke highly of close friends and extended family and adored being the life of the party. In 2016, Ron suffered a stroke; however, his determination, strong-willed nature and trust in the Creator allowed him to regain his independence and quit smoking which he was proud of. In 2017, Ron traveled to Edmonton and Kamloops to attend his sister-in-law, Mary’s, birthday party and visit family. He labeled this trip, “A Trip of a Life Time” and spoke of these fond memories often. Ron, Ronnie, Uncle Ronnie, Bird and The Greatest, whichever one you knew him by, was spunky, passionate, friendly, opinionated and quickwitted. Few thoughts were left unspoken, family meals were not rejected and his love was never withheld, he was always willing to help anyone who needed it. His unpredictable haircuts, joy, wisdom and advice will be forever missed and never forgotten. A memorial service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held on Friday, March 2 at 2:00pm from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton. Interment to follow in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Memorials in Ron’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to St. Paul Lutheran Church as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.
