CHOPTUIK - With great sadness, the family of John Choptuik announce his passing from this life, into the heavens above on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. John was 87 years young. John was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anne (nee Stebelski), his wife, Laura and his son Lorrie. Left to mourn John’s passing are his five children, Arlene (Ben), Virginia (Fred), Joey (Shelley), Randy (Karen) and Maria (Gary); his daughter-in-law, Debbie as well as his 11 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren. John also has two surviving brothers, Ernie (Margaret), Walter (Helen) and one sister, Phyllis (David), nieces, nephews, numerous step-family and friends. John was born in Hamiota, MB on July 11, 1929 and went to school in Solsgirth. He married Annette Holowka in 1953 and they started their family together. He worked hard and played hard throughout his entire life. He was a helper on the home farm then was employed on the CP rail for many years. The family moved wherever the job was. In 1964 John moved to Churchbridge and worked as a supervisor underground at the potash mine near Esterhazy, SK. John was very proud of working at the mine and even prouder when his sons and grandson took on jobs at IMC/Mosaic. He retired in 1987 due to health reasons. John married Laura Loveridge in 1991 and a few years later they moved to Yorkton. John loved to keep busy and if something wasn’t right he would make it right, “not now but right now”. John was always so proud of his garden and had a real green thumb and never a weed - he was always trying to give his produce away. He loved music, dancing, hunting, swimming, fishing and camping. The campgrounds probably didn’t like to see his motorhome pulling in because from the moment he arrived he had a huge fire burning. Between the fire and smoke using all of the free firewood and his polka music playing you could always locate him in the campground. John liked to watch his grandchildren’s sports and held a Yorkton Terrier’s seasons ticket for many years. He enjoyed many harvest seasons combining on Virginia and Fred’s farm. Above all, he loved spending time visiting with family members, just to visit and have a drink - that would put a gleam in his eye. In January 2014, John’s Alzheimers advanced and he moved into the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. The disease stole his words but not his smile or his sense of humor. Friends so wishing may make donations in John’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 9, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Shelly Morris officiating. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden”. Special music was provided by Linda Datema, Esther Morgan, Teresa Laycock and Carla Laycock who sang, “Jealous of the Angels”. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with John’s grandchildren, Cory Heggestad, Channa Lamarche, Melissa Choptuik, Ryan Choptuik, Robert Cross, Michael Cross, Josha Choptuik, Louden Choptuik, Michelle Orr, Morgan Choptuik and Daniel Ducharme serving as casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. BURNARD - Ruth Ellen Lovatt was born on June 24, 1924 to Andrew and Esther (Copeland) Lovatt, in Radville, SK, where her father was the postmaster for many years. As a child, Ruth enjoyed tap dancing, piano lessons, figure skating and singing in recitals. She attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, graduating in 1947 with a degree in Household Science. She worked as a dietician in two different hospitals: the Vancouver General and the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Ruth met Ivan Burnard of Theodore, SK while they were attending university. On July 6, 1949 they were married at St. Luke’s Church in Victoria, then settled on the family farm seven miles south of Theodore. This was quite an adjustment for a city girl! Their marriage was a strong one and they were blessed with four children over 14 years, Beth, Ann, Keith and Trevor. They provided a warm, loving environment in which their children could grow and learn. They highly valued education and encouraged their children to strive to become their best. Ruth was a longtime member of the Creekside Homemakers Club which became the Women’s Institute Guild in later years, enjoying lifelong friendships with the women in the club. She was also the secretary-treasurer of the Theodore Pastoral Charge of the United Church for over 10 years. Each year she harvested large amounts of vegetables from her half acre of garden. Over the years she baked hundreds of pies, cakes, cookies and buns - all delicious! Ruth also enjoyed sewing, embroidering and knitting - her hands were never idle! Living through the 1930’s and the war years shaped her personality - she didn’t throw anything out that might still have good wear in it, often re-making a garment into something else. All of her children and grandchildren treasure the mittens, socks and slippers made by her loving hands! Her help with trucking during harvest time was a huge help to Ivan. Later in life, Ruth took up oil painting which she thoroughly enjoyed! She gave away many of her exquisitely detailed paintings to family and friends. Ruth delighted in her five grandchildren - and her seven great-grandchildren! They have fond memories of her reading books, colouring and playing games with them. Her travels included two trips to England (one at age seven), Vancouver, Victoria, California, Denver, Ontario and many trips to Calgary. She always had a positive attitude toward life - deal with what life gives you and look on the bright side! When Ivan passed away in 1990, Ruth continued to live on at the farm with her two sons. Up until the age of 90, she had been hospitalized only when giving birth to babies! Two falls at age 91 in the spring of 2015 resulted in her eventually becoming a permanent resident of the Theodore Health Centre. The family is very grateful to the doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Canora and Theodore Nursing Homes, as well as in the hospitals in Regina, Canora and Yorkton for the excellent care they provided. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Esther Lovatt in the mid 1950’s, by her infant sister at birth and by her loving husband, Ivan, in 1990. To celebrate her memory she leaves her two daughters: Beth (Paul) Berg of Yorkton, SK and their sons, Ian (Erin) Berg and their children, Felicity and Malcolm of Calgary, AB, Nolan (Rebecca) Berg and their sons, Ivan and David of Saskatoon, SK, Everett (Marie) Berg and their son, Cedar of Saskatoon, SK; Ann (Sandy) Crawford of Calgary, AB and their daughters, Colleen (Drew) Beausoleil and their son, Alexandre of Sherwood Park, AB and Alayne Crawford and her husband, Chris White and son, Kieran of Ottawa, ON and sons, Keith Burnard and Trevor Burnard of Theodore, SK. Ruth is also survived by her sister-in-law, Edna McNichol of Calgary, AB and her brother-in-law, Lawrence (Donna) Burnard of Estevan, SK and many dear nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Theodore Health Centre or to the Theodore United Church would be appreciated. A sharing time for family and friends was held on the evening of Friday, December 9, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Berg officiating. The pianist, Pattie Janzen led the congregation in the singing of the hymn, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”. Soloist, Amanda Buhler shared two selections, “We’ll Meet Again” and “In the Bulb There is a Flower”. Following a luncheon in the Gunn Reception Room at Christie’s Funeral Home, the Interment Service took place in the Theodore Village Cemetery, Theodore, SK with Ruth’s son, Trevor Burnard, grandsons, Ian Berg, Nolan Berg and Everett Berg and sons-in-law, Sandy Crawford and Paul Berg serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

HERCHUK - Ret’d RCMP Staff Sgt. Alex (Al) - On Monday, November 28, 2016 with family at his side, Alex received “Anointing of the Sick” and peacefully passed on at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 85 years of age. On September 26, 1931, the last of five children was born to Michael and Lena (nee Wudwud) Herchuk at Vermilion, AB. His family then moved to Vegreville where he was raised and attended school. Alex was a generous soul from a very young age and upon him and his brother discovering a bag of stolen money, proceeded to hand the bills out to any and all people passing by. As a youngster with the dream of joining the RCMP, he would dangle from a “chin-up bar” before bed to ensure he met the height requirement. Following graduation from high school and playing competitive hockey throughout his employment years, Alex attended college for two years, worked as a carpenter in Vegreville and was later employed as a Lineman with Alberta Utilities. He worked in the coal mines in Crowsnest Pass, AB and later in a Yukon gold mine. Not knowing then what we know now, his years of carpentry work with raw asbestos slowly enveloped his system with asbestos lung cancer claiming his life. Always a sports-minded individual and excelling in the game of hockey, he was faced with a career decision in 1955. He left the farm-club of the Detroit Red Wings (six team NHL) when his opportunity to “help people” presented. Alex signed up for what was at the time nine months of training with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in September of 1955, graduating in June of 1956 in Ottawa and posted to Ottawa “A” Division Protective Services. It was here that he had the opportunity to meet and personally escort a number of noted public figures such as U.S. President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the first Prime Minister of Israel, Ben Gurion. He was assigned to Motorcycle Patrol and Security Escort Service on Parliament Hill and all federal roadways and continued this service upon transfer to Regina “F” Division Highway Patrol. Alex was a “Jack of all trades” and mastered several of them including his Private Pilot’s License and Certified Scuba Diving Instructor. Hobbies included bee-keeping and helping farmer friends at harvest time. An avid golfer and curler, he was known for his quick-witted comebacks. After he and his grandson finished an unusually challenging and frustrating golf game for them, Grandpa Alex remarked, “I wonder if Father has confessions today?” A self-starter and gifted carpenter, Alex was known for drafting his plans on the smallest scraps of paper, serviettes and the back of matchbook covers. Thanks to absentee landlords, several “rented quarters” were in better shape when Al left as compared to when first posted there. Alex was a faithful member of the Roman Catholic Church and an Honourary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. One of his most enjoyable charitable activities was the K of C bingos. Alex proudly served with the Knights in each of his RCMP postings and participated in a variety of charitable activities. In 1956, he met Rita Baldwin in Ottawa, ON and they were united in Holy Matrimony in 1959 at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Regina. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Rita and three children: daughter, Christine (Ret’d RCMP Cpl. Richard) and their son Gregory; son, Ret’d RCMP Cpl. Michael (Marnie-Lee) and their son Luke and daughter, Donna (Jeff). Alex proudly served the people of Canada for 36 1/2 years in 13 various postings. While Section NCO in Northern Saskatchewan, he was given the nickname “Red Ink Herchuk”. Due to his attention to detail and dedicated work ethic, members knew when “Staff” had done an inspection as evident from files being marked with “red ink”. Yorkton was his final posting where he and Rita retired in September of 1991 and chose to remain until his passing. Alex courageously battled asbestos lung cancer and when asked, “How are you doing today Al?” he would chuckle and say, “If I was any better, I’d be dangerous!”. Honouring and respecting Alex’s request, his final wish was for a private family service to be held at a later date. His final resting place will be RCMP Depot Division in Regina. Those so wishing may have a Mass said for the repose of his soul or make a donation in memory of Alex with a gift to a charity of donor’s choice. Your continuing prayers are most appreciated and may Alex rest in the arms of God. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kopan’s Funeral Service, Highway #9 North, Yorkton, SK. 306-783-0099 www.kopans.ca.
