CIF provides $25,000 for Anne Portnuff seats

The seats at the Anne Portnuff Theatre need to be replaced, and the various user groups that use the theatre are working to raise the estimated $300,000 needed to replace all 724 seats.

They received a major boost thanks to the Community Initiatives Fund, which is pitching in $25,000 to the project.

Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit presented the funds to the Portnuff Revitalization Funding Partners, and says that the project is a fit with the mandate of the fund, which is to support individual and community quality of life and wellbeing.

The project is among the 274 grants being

issued after the most recent application deadline, for a total of $4.5 million issued provincially.

The CIF matches funds from the community, and they are matching funds provided by the Good Spirit School Division, which is contributing $54,000 thanks to a per-seat levy that was collected in anticipation of the project.

Beyond representing the province with the Community Futures Grant, Ottenbreit believes in the project personally. His family has purchased two seats, and he believes says he knows first hand how important the theatre is, both to the school and the city as a whole.

Forage legumes have a place in crop rotations

by Nadia Mori, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

but forage production may be extended to increase the return on the forage establishment investment.

During the 2016 growing season, many cereal growers had a brush with fusarium. Rotating perennial legumes into an annual crop rotation can help break disease cycles plus offer a long list of other benefits.

Kick out Diseases – Breaking cycles of fusarium and ergot requires a minimum of two years where no susceptible or carrier crops are grown.

Rotating into a perennial legume crop can offer the needed break by removing host plants form the rotation thus reducing the level of pathogens in the soil. Production benefits of perennial forages in a crop rotation are optimized after two to three years,

Increased Fertility – One of the largest benefits of including legumes in an annual crop rotation is the injection of plant fixed nitrogen. The Western Beef Development Centre (WBDC) conducted a 4-year cropping rotation study across the different soil zones. The net fertil-

izer equivalent (NFE) for alfalfa ranged from 35kg/ ha (valued at $43/ha) in Swift Current to 373kg/ ha (valued at $460/ha) in Melfot. Soil zone and growing season conditions do have significant influence on how effective the fertilization from legumes can be. Proper inoculation of legumes is required for maximum nitrogen fixation to occur. Because forage legumes reach much deeper into the soil hori-

over and starts to heal, he licks it with his tongue (it just reaches) and opens it up again. It isn’t infected, but it won’t heal and looks awful. What can I do to stop him from licking his nose? — Wendy, via email DEAR WENDY: The tip of the nose is a tough spot to have a scratch when you’re a dog. The skin is somewhat thin, and the wound itches as it heals, and what dog can resist licking that itchy spot?

Even though the wound isn’t infected, you should

consult the vet, even if it’s just a phone call. He or she may recommend a specific medication — say, a nastytasting antibiotic cream — or have other advice that can help.

Many pet owners say they’ve had some success with dabbing a triple antibiotic ointment on the sore spot twice a day, and distracting their dog for a few minutes with a treat or playing with them.

A few owners recommended placing a muzzle (or a comfortable cloth

muzzle) on a dog for short periods to give any medicine being used time to sink in. If you go this route, be sure to supervise Twitch the entire time, give him lots of praise and a treat before and after putting the muzzle on.

Nose wounds that won’t heal can be troublesome, but keep looking for ways to treat the scratch that will reduce Twitch’s urge to lick at the spot.

Penn State fans and alums knew there were going to be years like this, didn’t they? In what can only be described as a minor controversy for the Penn State Nittany Lions, their Big Ten championship season will end with a trip to Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, their Top 10 ranking all but ensured, win or lose.

The Rose Bowl matchup with USC is very compelling and will no doubt be a well-contested game.

Still, after reeling off nine straight wins — several of which were major massacres — and a dramatic, come-from-behind win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, it can only be seen as a consolation prize for some and a more expensive cross-country commute for most.

The College Football Playoff series, with its 12 wise men selection committee, was inherently flawed from the start.

That’s what happens when you build the playoff formula based on five “power” conferences with only four playoff spots.

This year, Penn State ended up with the square peg, despite having won the Big Ten conference championship.

The entire point of having a power-conference structure was to help ensure against situations where teams with great records and strong schedule bona fides like, say, Ohio State, weren’t picked over teams that did what they were supposed to do by winning their conference. It was supposed to add a little stability.

But we live in unstable times. The playoff committee is always quick to point out and tout the “human” side of the selection process. I’m not feeling it.

While Michigan removed itself from the mix with two losses, Ohio State, which beat Michigan, gets the nod, despite losing to Penn State, who lost to Michigan but, again, won

leadership of the East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania-bred James Franklin, has been gracious, it has shown humility. The Rose Bowl IS an honor, and it is a fitting cap to a great season.

Creating a healthy sleep routine (NC) — Even though the week can feel like an endless stream of preparations, there’s one prep time most of us are missing — sleep prep. Research shows that 67% of Canadians wish they could get a better sleep, but they can’t seem to figure out how. Experts recommend adding a wind-down routine to your schedule to help your brain adjust to sleep mode. Tonight, forget counting sheep and try these five helpful tips for a healthy bedtime routine to get those much-needed z’s.

1. Lay out your pjs: Laying out your pyjamas and even your clothes for the next day before you head off to brush your teeth and wash your face plants a seed in your brain that it will soon be time to shut down and recharge.

2. Power down technology: It’s all too common — we get in bed and take that one last scroll through Facebook and Instagram, check out one more email.

Although you may think this is relaxing, a lit screen from a phone, tablet, computer or television can serve as a brain stimulant, waking you up instead of helping you decompress.

3. Avoid evening stimulants: Although everyone responds to stimulants differently, the average person should stop consuming caffeinated products six hours before bed. If you’re having trouble getting to sleep at night, consider drinking less coffee or tea in the late afternoon and evening. Also, try to schedule any vigorous workouts earlier in the day.

4. Create a consistent

Singing is good for your health If you sing along to songs in the car or belt out a few tunes in the shower, you may be doing yourself quite a bit of good.

Various formal and informal studies point to singing as a great way to boost both mental and physical health. Though the people around you may prefer you not belt out a few tunes, there are numerous reasons to sing and sing often.

Evidence points to singing as having psychological benefits, and singing also increases oxygenation in the bloodstream. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, has studied the developmental and medical aspects of singing for more than 30 years. Welch consistently advocates for singing, saying it can serve

as an aerobic activity that promotes a healthy heart.

Singing can help to alleviate stress by releasing oxytocin, a natural stress reliever, into the blood.

Stress has a number of adverse effects, and any steps taken to help relieve stress can lighten one’s mood and release tension.

Singing, particularly group singing, can lessen feelings of depression and loneliness. In their paper “Psychological and physiological effects of singing in a choir,� researchers at the Abant Izzet Baysal University in Turkey noted that singing relieves anxiety and contributes to quality of life. Group singing may sync the heart rates of participants and could actually serve as a type of guided group meditation.

Tips to prolong the life of your Christmas tree Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions.

Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long.

Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take these steps to prolong the life of their trees.

• Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it from the farm to your living room. Unwrapped trees placed atop vehicles can be dried out by the wind.

Prevent wind damage by wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed. If you don’t have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your vehicle. If it doesn’t, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won’t blow off in the wind when you hit the open road.

• Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home.

Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water.

• Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

• Water the tree often.

Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That’s because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree’s vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home.

But check the tree’s water stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary.

A few tricks of the trade can help holiday celebrants maintain lush, awe-inspiring Christmas trees throughout the holiday season.

Gluten-free peach turkey meatballs (NC) — About 90% of the world’s mustard seeds are grown here in Canada, where the cool, temperate climate makes for ideal growing conditions.

Mustard plants might just be the only living things that appreciate the Canadian winter — frost even enhances the flavour of the seeds.

Having mustard every day might not keep the doctor away, but the yellow stuff does offer some health benefits, including having lower fat and sugar counts than other condiments such as mayo or ketchup, aiding in digestion and boosting metabolism by as much as 25%.

Mustard seeds are also a source of fibre and protein, as well as a variety of beneficial nutrients including iron, magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorous and selenium.

Before you head out to buy a jar of the good stuff, keep in mind that not all Dijons “cut the mustard.” The flavour of a classic Dijon is derived from a combination of brown mustard seeds, wine, garlic and onion. But like many regional wines — the most famous being, of course, Champagne — Dijon mustard is subject to an Appelation Controlée, meaning that it can only

be called “Dijon” if it is made according to specific guidelines and traditions established in the Burgundy Region of France. So the next time you’re shopping for mustard, be sure you’re getting the real thing, instead of Dijon-style imitations.

Enjoy the taste and health benefits of Dijon mustard with this sweet and tangy peach turkey meatballs recipe from the kitchen of Harry Lalousis, in-house mustard sommelier at Maille, the leading and oldest brand of French mustard dating back to 1747. This flavorful appetizer is even gluten-free, making it a great

option when you’re unsure if your guests have any dietary restrictions.

PEACH TURKEY MEATBALLS For the meatballs • 1 lb ground turkey • 1 tsp onion powder • 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1 tbsp olive oil For the glaze • 2 tbsp Maille Dijon Originale mustard • 1/4 cup peach or apricot jam • 1 tsp. honey

Various spices can add flavor, but Indian spices tend to pack a more powerful punch than ingredients that are not quite as bold.

Indian dishes vary with regard to how much kick they deliver, and many people find dishes like the following recipe for “Saag Paneer” from Jill Lightner’s “Edible Seattle: The Cookbook” (Sterling Epicure) is spicy but not overly so. Those who want a little more kick than this recipe provides can substitute mustard greens for a portion of the spinach.

SAAG PANEER Serves 4 •1 pound fresh spinach •1⁄2 teaspoon salt •3⁄4 teaspoon garam masala •1⁄2 teaspoon ground coriander •1⁄4 teaspoon turmeric •1⁄4 teaspoon ground cumin •1⁄4 cup ghee •1 medium onion, minced •2 tablespoons peeled and minced fresh ginger •1⁄4 cup heavy cream or evaporated milk •3⁄4 pound paneer, cut into 2-inch cubes In a food processor, alternate adding handfuls of spinach and tablespoons of water, up to

3⁄4 cup water, blending between additions. When you have a wet, smooth puree, whirl in the salt.

In a small dish, combine the garam masala, coriander, turmeric, and cumin.

Set a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat and add the ghee. Once it is thoroughly hot, add the onion and ginger. Stir constantly, frying until the onion is soft and medium brown. Pour in the spice mixture all at once and stir until the spices are slight-

ly fried and completely coating the onion. Slowly pour in the spinach puree, stirring to blend with the spiced onion. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, until most of the water has evaporated, about 15 minutes.

Stir in the cream, add the paneer and cover. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the paneer is warmed through. Adjust the seasonings to taste and serve hot. Serve the dish with basmati rice and grilled naan or pita.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Snowden” (R) — Oliver Stone directs this recenthistory biopic about the national security contractor who leaked an unprecedented amount of government data when he saw how extensive and invasive the U.S. government’s surveillance had become. Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) tells his story to journalist Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) and filmmaker Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo) while lying low in Hong Kong. The real-life guy makes an interesting enough character, but Stone added some fictional mentors, including one played by Nicholas Cage.

Stone shows just how dated his perspective is with this one. Snowden started as a real-deal everyman thrust into a shadowy high-tech world.

“American Honey” (R) — Teenage Texan girl, Star (newcomer Sasha Lane), hitches a ride with a van full of vibrant youngsters who sell magazine subscriptions. If these kids pulled up to drive you to the movies, your mom would say you’re not going anywhere. Star, however, is leaving a terrible home situation and finds her place with the roadrambling, hard-partying, troublemaking youths. A member of the crew, Jake (Shia LaBeouf), holds particular intrigue for Star,

even though he’s trouble from a mile away.

The movie is full of freedom and vice and youth and beauty, and it will keep you spellbound, even if you wish the spell took one less hour to cast — the runtime clocks in at just under three hours.

It’s not the coming-of-age film you want your kids to relate to, but there is something vital and good going on here.

“In a Valley of Violence” (R) — This surprising Western starring Ethan “I just rode over from ‘The Magnificent Seven’ set” Hawke has the grit and know-how to satisfy genre fans as well as the wit and humor to rise a little above the “just another Western” brand. Director Ti West is best known for horror (please go see “The House of the Devil”), but tries his hand at a low-budget workman Western studded with genuine laughs. Hawke plays the ubiquitous “guy who doesn’t like violence even though he’s great at it” who is pushed to take out some bad dudes. John Travolta is even surprisingly enjoyable as the honcho of the doomed

thugs who messed with the wrong cowboy.

“When the Bough Breaks” (PG-13) — Wealthy and devoted New Orleans couple John and Laura Taylor (Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall) find sweet young Anna (Jaz Sinclair) to be the surrogate mother to carry their first child. Of course, everyone gets along at first, but then things get steamy-dangerous in a very predictable way.

Anna makes moves on John while Regina is away.

Threats are made and promises broken as each step of the erotic thrillerby-numbers gets filled in. There isn’t anything particularly bad about this film besides the lack of creative risk or ambition — which wouldn’t be so bad if the plot wasn’t already so familiar.

There’s something magical about a snow globe.

Who can resist shaking a liquid-filled decoration to watch it “snow”? I know families that collect them on their summer vacations, and on occasion they give them a good shake, turn them upright and then smile with the memories. Now you can make your own to commemorate something special you did in 2016.

Reminisce with your kids about activities your family enjoyed this past year, and then make a memory snow globe using a small waterproof object to represent the activity or event. Here’s how: First, you want to have a vision for your scene and how it will be contained.

Will you need a little jar, a fat jar or a skinny jar? A tall jam jar might accom-

modate that plastic bear figure as a reminder of a camping trip at a national park. A baby-food jar would make a perfect home for a little rubber starfish to represent the sea life you observed at an aquarium. It’s all up to you and your imagination.

Step 1: Fill the jar with water and shake to test the lid for tightness. Pour the water out, remove the paper label and let it dry completely.

Step 2: Choose a clean, waterproof toy, game piece, travel souvenir or trinket to inhabit the imaginary world. Place it temporarily inside the lid and lower the jar down over it, just to make sure it fits and allows enough space for the “snow” to fall when complete. An adult should glue the object on the inside of the lid with water-resistant glue, such as aquarium sealant from your local pet store. Let dry 24 hours.

Step 3: Fill the jar almost to the top with baby oil, or use distilled water with a few drops of glycer-

in added. Sprinkle glitter or waterproof confetti into the liquid. An adult should apply water-resistant glue to the outside grooves of the jar rim and carefully screw on the lid. Stand the jar with lid end up to dry for 24 hours.

Gather your kids around and shake your 2016 memory globe. Then hold still and watch.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you tell me if there is any hope of a cure for tree-nut allergy, particularly for a child? — X.M. ANSWER: Tree-nut allergies, like all allergies, vary in severity from mild to life-threatening.

Allergies to tree nuts (these include walnuts, cashews, almonds and others) are common, are more likely to be severe, and tend to persist throughout lifetime.

People with one tree-nut allergy may have others, and about 30 percent to 40 percent also may be allergic to peanuts (despite their being legumes, they share enough characteristics for co-allergic reactions).

Peanut and tree-nut allergies appear to be increasing in prevalence over time.

The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the allergen, which requires constant vigilance, careful reading of nutritional labels and a plan

Autism, including its variant Asperger syndrome, is a spectrum of illnesses that share deficits in social interaction, communication and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors. In Asperger syndrome, there is no clinically significant delay in language and intellectual development.

I certainly agree with you that each person is unique and that the label of a psychiatric condition, such as autism, bipolar or a personality disorder, has only limited usefulness. In the best case, it can give a person a way to start learning how to overcome challenges that similar people have faced. At worst, a label predisposes others to look at the person through a certain lens and to expect certain behaviors.

I have had many patients with psychiatric diagnoses ask me not to put that into their medical record, after having built up enough trust to share the diagnosis with me. People have had such negative experiences based on their diagnosis, their label, that

POACHED FISH WITH CUCUMBERS •2-1/2 cups inexpensive olive oil •4 (6 ounce) pieces of thick salmon, halibut or other white fish filet,

Take the pan off of the heat and leave it somewhere warm on top of the stove for 15 minutes, so the fish can poach gently in the oil. The temperature should remain at 130 F to 140 F; if necessary,

Shortly before the fish is ready, heat the extravirgin olive oil in a large frying pan. Add cucumber slices and toss over medium heat for 1 minute. Add the dill, vinegar and a little salt.

To serve, divide the cucumber among 4 serving plates. Carefully lift the fish out of the oil, letting the excess drain off, and set it on top of the cucumber. Pour the oil into a cup, leaving behind the juices from the fish, which will have settled on the bottom of the pan. Spoon these juices around the edge of the plate, sprinkle the fish with a few sea-salt flakes, and garnish with a spring of dill. Serves 4.

Pour a thin layer of olive oil in a pan just big enough to hold the pieces of fish side by side.

Season the fish on both sides with a little salt, place in pan and pour the rest of the oil over them — it should just cover the fish. Very slowly heat the oil to 140 F, agitating it with a spatula now and then so it heats evenly.

If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the oil with your little finger — the oil should just feel unpleasantly hot.

One of the things I love the most about studying food is the insight that culinary traditions give you into history and culture. Recently, I’ve been reading about Christmas customs and holiday meals in Europe.

I discovered a tradition called The Feast of the Seven Fishes, along with several delicious recipes for preparing fish.

The fish is often used as a symbol of Christianity. Because of the persecution faced by the early church, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company.

Preparing and eating seafood on Christmas Eve in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is an old European tradition. Many families abstain from eating meat and serve only fish or other types of seafood on Christmas Eve. A typical feast features cod, eel, octopus, calamari, mussels, clams, shrimp and lobster.

While researching the preparation of fish throughout history, I discovered a delicious recipe for fish poached in an inexpensive olive oil along with sliced cucumber and dill. The olive oil ensures that the fish will be moist, and the cucumber and dill compliment the dish perfectly. If you’re tired of preparing the same thing for your Christmas celebration, explore your families’ culinary heritage and create your own traditions.

GLAZED HAM This is an easy and delicious ham to serve at Christmastime. For variety, brush the orange glaze on a roast turkey!

•1 12-pound fully cooked smoked whole ham •2 tablespoons whole cloves •2 (10-ounce) jars orange marmalade •1 cup orange juice •2 tablespoons prepared mustard •1/2 teaspoon ground cloves •1/2 teaspoon ground ginger •1/2 cup dark seedless raisins •1 (15 1/4-ounce) can pineapple rings for garnish •Maraschino cherries and parsley sprigs for garnish With sharp knife, remove skin and trim all but about 1/4-inch fat from ham. Stud ham with whole cloves. Place ham, fatside up, on rack in large roasting pan. Insert meat thermometer into thickest part of ham, being careful that pointed end of thermometer does not touch bone. Bake ham in 325 F oven 2 1/2 hours. If ham browns too quickly, cover with a tent of foil.

Tips to help you quit smoking for good (NC) — Whether it’s a night out with friends, a stressful work day, or even a morning coffee, every smoker and current quitter experiences trigger moments that can make it very difficult to quit. A recent survey shows the most common scenarios that usually trigger cravings for Canadians are after having a meal, being with friends who smoke, consuming alcohol, and drinking coffee. The most common stressors are family-related.

Fortunately, there are simple ways you can deal with your triggers to fight your cravings. Here are

five easy tips that’ll help you quit smoking for good.

1. For food and drink triggers. First identify which foods and drinks are your triggers. Then try to replace your bad habit with a good (or better) one.

For example, if your daily coffee makes you want to smoke, instead try combining it with a walk around the block or a call to catch up with a friend.

2. For stress-related triggers. Even if stress isn’t one of your triggers, you’ll probably experience some when you first try to quit. So plan for this and explore other ways

to relax, such as exercise, meditation, a massage, picking up a new hobby, or connecting with friends.

3. For family-related triggers. Try talking with your family to brainstorm ways to help reduce the stressor and the way it affects you. If you can’t do this, find better ways of coping. Speaking to a counsellor, getting more exercise, sleeping enough, and eating well are all great ways of reducing stress when you can’t change what’s bothering you.

4. For fun night out triggers. Enlist the help of your friends and family — let them know you’re quit-

ting smoking and would love their support. Ask that any smokers refrain from inviting you to join them on smoke breaks, and get advice from loved ones who have successfully quit.

5. For all triggers.
