Charity Road Race is a success

On Sunday, August 21, the Yorkton Health Foundation’s tenth annual Charity Road Race and Community Walk took place out of the Yorkton Regional High School parking lot.

The total amount raised this year was $34, 735. All funds raised will go towards new monitoring equipment for the Intensive Care Unit in the Regional Hospital.

Top fundraisers of the year were Russ Thompson, who raised

$2,135; Dave Matichuk, who raised $1,610; the Surjik family, who raised $1,210; Tracy Newton, raising $1,135; and, Adele Pask, who raised $1,050.

The Charity Road Race included races with distances ranging from two kilometers up to a half marathon (21km).

A total of 267 people took place in this year’s road race.

The winner of the junior two kilometre race was Nicholas Laskowski with a time of 13:26.

The winner of the five kilometre race in the men’s division was

Shawn McLean with a time of 17:12, and in the women’s division was Hannah Walker with a time of 21:40.

The winner of the ten kilometre race in the men’s division was Michael Middlemiss with a time of 35:54 and in the women’s division was Brooke Mentanko with a time of 39:57.

The winner of the halfmarathon (21 km) race in the men’s division was Keith Inmerker with a time of 1:24:26, and for the women’s division was Carrie Grant-Walker with a time of 1:38:46.

More than 250 runners took part in this year’s Health Foundation Charity Road Race on August 21, raising $34,735.

Whooping Cough cases in Sunrise Health Region

Cases of pertussis have been recently diagnosed in the southern area of Sunrise Health Region.

Pertussis is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory (breathing) system. Anyone can get pertussis, but the disease is most severe in children less than one year when it can be fatal. This

disease is also severe in pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy as it can be passed to the newborn with the potential to cause severe complications and death.

During the last four years (2011-2014), there have been 148 cases of pertussis reported in Saskatchewan and twenty percent of total

cases were hospitalized.

Early symptoms of pertussis are sneezing, runny nose, a fever and a cough. Over time, the cough gets worse, leading to severe coughing spells with a whooping sound before the next breath and often ends in vomiting. The cough can last up to two months and can make it very hard to

breathe. Young infants may not have these exact symptoms, and a parent or caregiver may not realize how sick their baby really is. Once a person has had pertussis, they do not develop life-long protection and may get the disease again.

Crop starting to hit the bins Saskatchewan producers have three per cent of the 2016 crop in the bin, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seven per cent of the provincial crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Harvest progress is on par with the five-year average (2011-2015). The break in rain showers toward the end of the week allowed producers in many parts of the province to continue with harvest.

Sixty-two per cent of winter wheat, 15 per cent of peas, five per cent of lentils and four per cent of barley and mustard have been com-

bined. Nine per cent of canola and mustard has been swathed. Harvest is furthest ahead in the southeastern part of the province, where producers have eight per cent of the crop combined.

Yields are estimated to be above the five- and 10-year averages across all crops, with the exception of lentils and chickpeas.

The majority of the rainfall came earlier in the week, and ranged from trace amounts to 102 mm at Tramping Lake. Some other areas reporting significant amounts of rain this week include Bethune (43 mm), Earl Grey (56 mm), Harris

(86 mm), Rosetown (62 mm), Landis (77 mm), Alvena (52 mm), Hafford (50 mm) and Nipawin (49 mm).

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 24 per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate and two per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 82 per cent adequate and eight per cent short. Crop districts 7A and 8A are reporting that 53 and 57 per cent, respectively, of cropland have surplus topsoil moisture.

Producers may have difficulty accessing fields due to all the rain, and other fields may be too

soft to support harvest equipment. The majority of last week’s crop damage was caused by excess rain and lodging.

Producers are busy with harvest and haying.

Today I will address the ease of setting up a productive garden in your home to provide additional groceries for your plate and I’m sure you will gain even more joy in your home as a bi-product.

First off, I always focus on the provision of food, because it is already hard to afford it.

So if you have to invest hard earned dollars, you are not likely going to do that just for flowers you want. In a down economy, flowers are nice but food is essential. Start by finding a few florescent lights and set them up in a fairly ventilated area like a spare bedroom or space in your basement.

I have bought simple lights at any local hardware store for $35 and have 3-4 setup. There needs to be air flow and having a small fan will simulate wind on the plants which is good for preventing mold and strengthens the stems.

Use anything you have as a container to hold the soil and plant. I like to use trays as I can plant a lot of mixed greens to

make big salads or lots of radishes or beets.

Try to grow things that won’t take long and that you will actually eat. A unique item we build and sell are vertical potato growers, that just sit in your basement and will grow spuds year round for pennies. Basically, you have to keep your house warm anyway so with a few simple lights you can enjoy a lush green garden of any size you can fit.

When is produce the most expensive? Winter.

An indoor garden will easily justify the investment not to mention your heat bill with savings on your grocery bill. Take this challenge and grow healthy food in a corner of your basement.

This is a basic start that will easily make winter less dull and become a worthy hobby.

Last fall the Kamsack Volunteer Fire Fighters (KVFF) came to the Legion with an appeal to help them raise money for a well-needed service vehicle. DEAR DR. ROACH: Three months ago, I slammed the fingertip of my left index finger in a drawer. The fingertip is still swollen and painful. My doctor sent me for an X-ray, and there is no fracture. I can bend it at the joint, but cannot put pressure on the fingertip.

I looked online, and read something that said a fingertip crush injury can take six months to a year

to heal, and the swelling may never go away completely.

Can this possibly be true? Why does it take so long? Is there anything I can do to help it heal?

I can get along OK without using the finger for everyday functioning, but I am a guitar player, and I really need to use that fingertip to play. Is there hope that I will be able to play again someday? I would be very sad to have to give it up. — D.L. DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been diagnosed with superior mesenteric artery syndrome. It sounds extremely serious. Would you be able to tell me more? I am very worried. — G.D. ANSWER: The superior mesenteric artery is

one of the critical arteries that supplies blood to the intestines. Directly underneath the SMA is the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In SMA syndrome, loss of the normal fat around the duodenum causes the artery to constrict the duodenum, causing a compression of the duodenum and an obstruction to food going through.

Serious weight loss due to medical illness, surgery or anorexia nervosa is the most common cause of SMA syndrome.

It’s a difficult diagnosis to make, and there is some controversy about what criteria are used for diagnosis.

If weight loss is the underlying cause of SMA syndrome, then nutritional support and weight gain become the primary treatment. Surgery is sometimes necessary.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about reheating foods in a microwave, and advised against Styrofoam or other plastic containers.

What is the best kind of container to use in the microwave? The manual says not to use anything metal. — J.W. ANSWER: Most plastics probably are safe to heat liquids in, but reheating foods can cause pockets of very high temperatures that can partially melt the

plastic and cause the release of potentially harmful chemicals. I recommend using glass or ceramic plates or bowls to reheat food.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Jungle Book” (PG) — Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Elf”) takes the story out of the safe, cartoony realm of the old animated Disney version, and makes something more solid and intense, while still keeping the lighthearted, optimistic core of the story. The new Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is great, especially in how he’s able to interact with his CG-animal co-stars.

You’d think there was real tenderness between him and the bear with Bill Murray’s voice. As an added lure, credits are packed with A-list voicework, including Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson and

It’s not a musical, but some of the familiar tunes have been incorporated in the film (with mixed results). The CG and creature designs are just plain astounding — seeing the monstrous King Louie emerge on screen gave me a real

Man fined for hunting infractions An Indian Head man was recently fined $5,360 in Carlyle provincial court for unlawfully hunting elk in the Kipling area.

In December 2015, conservation officers with the Ministry of Environment investigated an incident that occurred southeast of Kipling, where a herd of elk had been shot at. Even the local high school, which planned on playing its games there this season, knew the field was unplayable and made other plans, but not the NFL. Its decision to skip playing the game was met with a collective yawn, once again proving that nobody likes exhibition football games anyway.

Meanwhile, in Rio, despite all the talk of a city on the brink of collapse, things were going pretty well — particularly for the Americans, who as of this writing were dominating the medal count. Every hour, our athletes stand up on top of the podium, their eyes filled with tears of joy as our national anthem plays. Watching them walk up there begs the question: Who needs a Hall of Fame, anyway?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have five dogs, varying in age from puppy to senior, and three parakeets, and because of their very different dietary needs, I’m careful about what I buy and what they eat. I’ve seen many more product recalls of pet food than there used to be, even just a few years ago. What is going on? — Daniel, via email DEAR DANIEL: What you’re seeing is the result of the Food Safety

Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2011. It gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to improve food safety, including mandating pet-food recalls. Before the law was passed, individual pet-food companies could recall foods at their discretion.

Because of this — and because the regulations were finalized in September 2015 — we are seeing a lot more pet products being recalled.

For pet owners, this sudden increase is certainly alarming. However, it’s also an indication that some of the new regulations are beginning to work. Companies are complying with the recall mandate, and hopefully the same companies also

are working to improve their pet-food products so that they are safe to eat.

As a pet owner, you can help keep the new FDA regulations moving forward. Go to www.FDA. gov and search for “pet food.” There you’ll find detailed instructions on filing a complaint about a pet food, along with information about the latest recalls.

If you want to take more direct action, The Association for Truth in Pet Food, founded by Mollie Morrisette and Susan Thixton, is directly tackling product labeling and advocating for owners of pets sickened by manufactured food.

Enjoy a pub fare favorite at home

Certain foods are more popular than others, and chicken tenders certainly fall into the “more popular” category.

Few can resist chicken tenders, which make for popular pub fare and great additions to any buffet table at informal gatherings of friends and family.

While many people only indulge in chicken tenders when they’re out of the house, this simple, beloved dish can be enjoyed at home as well.

The following recipe for “Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders with Yogurt Dill Dip” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating

for Busy Families” (Fair Winds Press) is a delicious, low-calorie alternative to the fried chicken tenders available at many bars and restaurants.

PECAN-CRUSTED CHICKEN TENDERS WITH YOGURT DILL DIP Serves 4

For the dip: •1⁄4 cup nonfat plain Green yogurt •1⁄4 cup light mayonnaise •1 teaspoon lemon juice •1⁄4 teaspoon dried dill •1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄4 teaspoon onion powder •1 pinch salt •1 pinch freshly

For the chicken: •1⁄2 cup pecans •1⁄3 cup whole-wheat flour •2 teaspoons paprika •2 teaspoons dry mustard •2 teaspoons garlic powder

•1 teaspoon onion powder •1⁄2 teaspoon salt •1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1 tablespoon expel-

ground black pepper To make the chicken: Preheat the oven to 475 F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Whir pecans, flour, paprika, dry mustard, garlic and onion powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor until pecans are ground to a powder, about 30 seconds. Drizzle in the oil with the motor running, blending completely. Transfer mixture to a shallow dish and stir in the panko bread crumbs.

Beat the egg in a second shallow dish and add the chicken tenders, coating them completely.

Transfer each tender to the breading, turning to coat evenly. Arrange the chicken on the prepared pan. Bake until golden brown and nearly firm, about 8 minutes.

To make the dip: Stir all the dip ingredients together in a small bowl.

Enjoy the cooked chicken immediately with the dip.

Note: Chicken tenders come from the undersides of chicken breasts and are naturally portioned into strips, saving you time in cutting them. If you don’t have chicken tenders, substitute chicken breasts cut into 4x1-inch strips.

Rainbow fruit skewers easy to make (NC) — These delicious skewers are easy to make plus the creamy lemon dip adds a great boost of flavour and is perfect for parties.

You can make both the skewers and dip ahead of time. Simply wrap skewers tightly with plastic wrap or place in a resealable bag and refrigerate

up to 12 hours. The dip can be made up to 24 hours ahead.

RAINBOW FRUIT SKEWERS WITH CREAMY LEMON DIP Makes: 10 skewers Fruit Skewers • 10 small strawberries • 10 cantaloupe balls

or peach wedges • 10 pineapple wedges or banana chunks • 10 kiwi wedges or honeydew balls • 30 blueberries • 10 purple grapes

• 1 tbsp Honey or Maple Syrup • Zest of 1 lemon • Pinch cinnamon • 10 short bamboo skewers Creamy Lemon Dip • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

Whisk yogurt with honey, lemon and cinnamon. Set aside.

A tasty take on chicken breasts

Chicken is a versatile food that can be served in various ways. Many cultures have their own unique takes on chicken, and each of those takes gives poultry a distinct flavor.

Foodies who want a northwestern United States take on poultry can try the following recipe for “Chicken Breasts with Roasted Red Peppers, Hedgehog Mushrooms and Truffled Cheese” courtesy of Jill Lightner’s “Edible Seattle: The Cookbook” (Sterling Epicure).

CHICKEN BREASTS WITH ROASTED RED PEPPERS, HEDGEHOG MUSHROOMS AND TRUFFLED CHEESE Serves 4

For the roasted red peppers: •2 red bell peppers •2 cloves garlic •2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil •Freshly ground black pepper For the stuffed chicken

breasts: •4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts •3⁄4 stick (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter •1⁄4 pound hedgehog mushrooms •3 to 4 ounces truffled cow’s milk cheese •Salt •Freshly ground black pepper •3⁄4 cup all-purpose flour •2 tablespoons olive oil Move the top oven rack so it’s about 5 inches from the broiler element.

Preheat the broiler and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the whole peppers on the

sheet and broil, turning them every few minutes, until their skins are entirely charred.

Transfer to a bowl large enough to hold them, and cover the bowl with the foil. Allow the peppers to rest for 20 minutes.

Uncover the bowl and use a paring knife to remove the skins, stems and seeds, while capturing the juice and flesh in the bowl. Cut or tear the peppers into 1-inch-wide strips. Using the flat side of a large knife, crush the garlic cloves and remove the skins. Add the garlic, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste and allow the roasted peppers to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Preheat the oven to 350 F. If the chicken breasts are large, insert a knife with a 1-inch blade into the center from the end of the breast, creating a pocket. Be careful not to pierce the outside.

If the breasts are small, butterfly them out flat, cover with plastic wrap,

and pound flat.

Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a small sauté pan and briefly cook the mushrooms until they’re soft, 3 to 4 minutes. Fill the pocket of each chicken breast with a strip of pepper, then some of the mushroom, then the cheese, and repeat until it can hold no more. Close the opening with a toothpick, season to taste with salt and pepper, and dredge in the flour.

Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter in a large ovenproof sauté pan, add the olive oil, and cook the breasts, turning

It makes six servings: four for dinner and four lunches. •2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt •1 tablespoon packed fresh mint or basil •1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped, or 1/2 tablespoon dried dill •1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin •3 cloves garlic, finely minced •1-1/2 teaspoons salt •1-1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper •4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice •1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil •1 teaspoon dried oregano •2 pounds chickenbreast tenders •1 English (seedless) cucumber •2 large ripe tomatoes •4 whole-wheat pitas

Grill chicken 10 to 12 minutes or until no longer pink in center, turning once.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the classification and diagnostic tool used by the American Psychiatric Association for psychiatric diagnosis, several symptoms must be present before a child turns 12 for that child to be diagnosed with ADHD. Part of the difficulty in diagnosing ADHD can be traced to the impulsivity and inattentiveness typical of children under the age of four. Because of that potential for misdiagnosis, parents should resist the urge to diagnose children without having their youngsters examined by a licensed psychiatrist.

Five lowcalorie snacks

Snacking may not seem like part of a healthy diet, but the right snacks can help men and women fight midday hunger without contributing to unwanted weight gain. The following low-calorie snacks won’t compromise adults’ efforts to maintain healthy weights, and they might prove useful as men and women look for that extra boost during the day .

1. Popcorn: Popcorn is low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber. Popcorn also is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been linked to reductions in heart disease and certain cancers.

Air-popped popcorn that is prepared without any oil is your best option, as a cup of such popcorn may only add up to about 30 calories. Avoid adding salt or butter or purchasing premade popcorn that is heavy on both, as both ingredients can compromise the health benefits of popcorn.

2. Nonfat Greek yogurt: Though it’s not as low in calories as popcorn, nonfat Greek yogurt is still a low-calorie snack that’s high in protein. Nonfat Greek yogurt may have as much as two times the amount of protein as traditional yogurts, and that’s beneficial because protein helps you feel full longer, which should help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid overeating. Nonfat Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar than traditional yogurts, and its creamy texture gives many people the impression that they are eating something decadent.

3. Hummus: Made primarily from ground chickpeas, hummus is a protein- and fiber-rich snack that has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for heart disease and certain types of cancers. Dip vegetables such as baby carrots into hummus, and you’ll have a low-calorie snack that’s also high in vitamin A and beta carotene.

4. Pistachios: Many people might read the labels of pistachios and be turned off by the fat content. But pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in protein, and a couple dozen pistachios may only amount to about 95 calories. Eat pistachios raw and do not add salt, which can negate their health benefits.

5. Grapes: Grapes might not be as popular as potato chips or other widely available snacks, but they are great sources of vitamin K and are loaded with antioxidants. Grapes are loaded with water, making them a filling snack that can help men and women avoid dehydration. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, one cup of grapes can provide as much as 5 percent of the recommended daily value of dietary fiber despite containing just over 100 calories.
