Saskatchewan Photography Awards launch

Saskatchewan photographers have a new opportunity to show off their work.

The S a s k a t c h e w a n Photography Awards, held with the Saskatchewan Prairie Light Photography Festival, will give someone the chance to get a gallery show with their work.

Don Stein, Executive Director of the Godfrey Dean, says their goal was

to do something new with a photography prize, and they decided to focus on a body of work rather than a single photograph.

Stein admits this is a much different focus than many other photography prizes, and Stein admits that it’s going to be an ambitious undertaking for both photographers and judges.

“This is quite a bit more work for both sides, because the judges have to go through a lot of photographs.”

Part of the goal is to

have “work that’s about something,” explains Stein, rather than a variety of images. He says that part of the challenge is finding a thematic link between the different images, and having an idea behind them.

“What we’re looking for is some thoughtfulness. Anyone can accidentally take a great picture with a digital camera, but take 20 great pictures and send those in.”

There will be two categories that people can enter. The professional

category is the bigger one, and will require 20-24 images, as well as the work they have posted online. Entrants in the enthusiast category have to submit less work, but are also encouraged to share their online presence.

The inclusion of the online element, which is weighted equally with the submitted work, was a way to get a better idea of the artist and their point of view, explains Stein.

“In many cases it’s

very illuminating to look at the rest of the work that they didn’t choose, which I, as a curator, might find more interesting.”

The competition is specifically for Saskatchewan photographers, whether they are located here or an ex-pat identify as a Saskatchewan artist.

The prize for the professional category is a solo exhibition at Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, printing and exhibition framing, professional prize of

$1,650. There is also the Enthusiast category, the prize being a group exhibition for 4 to 6 photographers at Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, printing and exhibition framing and a photographer prize of $300 each. The entry fee is $20 for the professional category and $10 for the enthusiast category.

The entry deadline is March 31. They hope to announce the winners on April 16.

Springside to host Vibram Birdie Bash

Mark Sunday, May 29 on your calendar and then plan on being at the Springside Disc Golf Course to take part in the first ‘Vibram Birdie Bash’ tournament.

“We are really looking forward to this event.

It’s one of the reasons we undertook to install a disc golf course in Springside, to host events for our local supporters, and hopefully draw some people to the community who have never visited before,” said Shauna S t a n l e y - S e y m o u r, Community Wellness Program Coordinator, Springside Community Centre.

The event will be part of a Vibram Birdie Bash series that will see similar events held across North America and beyond.

So while participation will have players as part of a much larger fraternity of disc golfers, it is ideal for beginners.

“The Birdie Bash format is great for first time disc golfers,” explained Trevor Lyons, Tournament Director with the newly formed Parkland Association of Disc Golf. “The idea is to throw over a generally shorter course to make aces and birdies easier,

and those count in the scoring of the event. You don’t need to have a big arm to throw 300-feet in a Birdie Bash.”

In that regard the Springside course is a great fit.

“We had limited area to design the course, so it is a shorter course that makes use of trees and cover to be fun,” said Calvin Daniels, interim president of the PADG, and co-designer of the course. “The local community has done a great job clearing underbrush, and while we will need to adjust a few target positions once the snow goes, by tournament day the Springside course is going to be just a great deal of fun for golfers.”

The Springside event will be part of a new PADG tournament series which will run from May through until October at courses across the area.

“The Springside Vibram Birdie Bash will be one of the first events on the new circuit we are currently working on,” said Lyons. “So that is exciting for the PADG.” The idea of the tournament series is to have each course in the PADG area that is interested to host one event where participation will pro-

vide points toward season-end recognition.

“We hope most courses participate as a way to highlight what they have to offer,” said Daniels, who added by midsummer there is expected to be about 20 courses in the PADG area.

“We are seeing tremendous interest in disc golf with communities, regional parks and other organizations seeing the potential of providing such a low cost, all age, sport / recreation.”

Seymour said that is what had Springside interested.

“We are always looking at ways to provide more recreation oppor-

tunities in our community, especially those that are accessible by nearly everyone, get people outdoors and are affordable,” she said. “Disc golf covers all those criteria.”

As for the Springside Vibram Birdie Bash, a 36-basket event played over two rounds of 18; the cost is $45 US, but the player package that comes with the entry fee is a great one, including a Vibram Fairway Driver and a Vibram Putt & Approach disc.

“That’s a big part of why it’s great for people new to the sport.

the entry fee, and at the end of the day you keep the discs,” said Lyons.

“So you are set to play all summer after that.”

Prepping is basically a trendy way of saying, “I’m trying to plan and prepare for anything.”

Of course many reading this article will think back to a time not so many decades ago when prepping was simply called — everyday life. Being prepared is a topic that is not boring and could easily be started off in any number of ways, but in our humble company

we ask the difficult questions first and take stock second. These questions are as old as time and every generation has faced these problems, and asking tough questions is not to induce fear but confront it.

I would be the first to encourage you and your family to discuss these questions with courage, then you will find wonderful ways to solve some of the issues and likely be surprised how “well on your way” you already may be! Prepping can be an enormous task especially if you are just get-

• On March 23, 1937, Craig Breedlove, the first person to reach land speeds of up to 600 mph in a jet-powered vehicle, is born. He designed a three-wheeled, rocketshaped vehicle powered by a surplus military jet engine and dubbed it the Spirit of America.

When you think of “tea time,” the image of sipping a relaxing cup of tea with friends may come to mind, but when those words bounce off the walls in my house, the teapot isn’t whistling.

Instead, my husband and sons are racing out the door to make their “tee time” at the golf course.

When my Irish-born

friend Margaret moved to the States more than 10 years ago, she couldn’t help but notice our always-on-the-go, hectic and harried lifestyle. She was determined to show Americans that it is possible to pause and enjoy friendship like the Irish tend to do. So she not only makes a daily event of tea time for herself,

but she also shares the tradition with her children and friends.

Why not make a family resolution to slow down and enjoy simple moments together, like tea time? As Margaret observes, “By the time everyone sips some tea, slathers scones with jam and butter, sips and then pours more tea, can you imagine the wonderful, one-on-one discussions a person can have with children, family and friends?”

Here are some ideas to get started: Kids can help by set-

ting the “tea tray,” a necessary component for tea time. You’ll need a sugar bowl, pitcher for milk and a small plate with sliced lemons. Cover the coffee table or dining-room table with a white lace cloth. (She collects hers at tag sales.) Then place cups, saucers, spoons and napkins around the table. Each person can be given a dessert plate and butter knife used to cut scones or cake into pieces or for spreading butter and cream.

When it’s time to sit down, let the children be responsible for passing

the milk, sugar, cake or scones.

How to brew a proper pot of tea: 1. Boil a kettle of water.

2. Pour 1 inch of hot water into a china or silver teapot. Swirl to warm, and then pour it out.

3. Into the pot, measure 1 teaspoon of tea per person and 1 extra teaspoon for the pot.

4. Add rapidly boiling water to the pot and steep for five minutes.

5. Strain tea into teacups.

6. Dispose of used tea leaves in compost pile or

Finally, go ahead and crush that garlic by turning your knife on its side and pressing down hard.

(1 mL) salt • 2 cups (500 mL) fresh blueberries • 1/2 cup (125 mL) Becel Buttery Taste margarine • 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) firmly packed light brown sugar

• 2 large eggs • 1 cup (250 mL) lowfat buttermilk • 1 tsp. (5 mL) vanilla extract • 1 tsp. (5 mL) finely grated lemon peel Preheat oven to 375˚F (190˚C). Line 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners; set aside.

Combine gluten free pancake and baking mix with salt in medium bowl; gently toss in blueberries.

Beat Becel Buttery Taste margarine with brown sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in

eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and lemon peel. Gently stir in pancake and baking mixture with wooden spoon. Evenly spoon into prepared muffin pan.

Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.

Let cool 10 minutes on wire rack; remove from pan and cool completely.

Recipe Tip: If using a pancake and baking mix or a flour blend without baking powder and baking soda, add 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) baking powder and 1/4 tsp. (1 mL) baking soda to pancake and baking mixture.

DEAR DR. ROACH: In March 2013, I fell and landed on my left side.

Since then, I have had quite a lot of pain. I had an MRI that showed I have a tear of the gluteus medius muscle. I was advised to have a surgical repair done as an outpatient. My family doctor wants me to wait and talk to another surgeon.

My pain is aggravated by pressure and weightbearing activities. What is your suggestion? I’m 77 and in pretty good health, and I walk my dogs several times per day. — M.C. ANSWER: Gluteus medius tears are an increasingly recognized cause of hip pain. The gluteus medius muscle helps hold the hip in place during walking.

They often are treated conservatively, with injection and physical therapy. They can be mistaken for trochanteric bursitis, but persistence of pain despite treatment

should make the physician consider alternate diagnoses, and an MRI usually makes the diagnosis.

In your case, you have been suffering for two years, and I agree that it’s time to consider surgical repair. However, I also have to agree with your family doctor that a second opinion may be wise. There are several new surgical techniques,

and you want an experienced surgeon operating on you. Talking to a second surgeon at the very least can make you more confident that the surgery is necessary.

Postoperative recovery may require six weeks of crutches or other assistive device, and another six weeks in a hip brace, although the exact recovery depends on you and the type of

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can high blood pressure cause blood clots, blindness and strokes? Or is this caused by taking the wrong combination of blood pressure medicines? — Anon.

ANSWER: High blood pressure over months or years causes damage to the lining of blood vessels. This can indeed predispose a person to a stroke. Reducing blood pressure gradually reduces risk of stroke.

Blood clots also can cause strokes, but these usually are not linked to blood pressure, high or low, and instead are linked to conditions that affect the blood itself or

that affect the rhythm of the heart. Some medicines, such as estrogen, make blood clots more likely.

In people with very high blood pressure, lowering it too much, too quickly can cause strokes. The blood pressure needs to be reduced gradually, which usually can be done as an outpatient. There are still a few times when people with extremely high blood pressure are admitted to the hospital, where blood pressure can be brought down very slowly in a controlled environment.

High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” (PG13) — The final installment of the Hunger Games series finally has arrived — and arrows fly, things blow up, and hard truths are learned.

Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leads a team during a full-scale invasion by the Coin-backed rebels against the greedy Capital. She’s supported by one-third of her love triangle, Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and one of the shifty rebel-types (Natalie Dormer). After the foot-dragging of the last film, our heroine finally gets an arrow pointed right at the sinister Snow (Donald Sutherland).

Will Ferrell in “Daddy’s Home” decision to slice the final piece of the trilogy into two, the climactic battle and sobering aftermath seem like drawn-out concluding paragraphs. The big budget and visual flare are all on full-display, leaving fans of the series with a somewhat satisfying closer.

“Daddy’s Home” (R) — Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg go head-tohead in this edgy familycentered comedy that pits dad against stepdad, nasty against nice, and comedy against wit. Brad (Ferrell) is a kind-heart-

ed, fuddy-duddy milquetoast who has put in an earnest effort to gain the love of his stepchildren.

Dusty (Wahlberg) is the rolling stone of a biological father who resurfaces and goes into competition with Brad, trying to prove himself the superior father figure despite his past transgressions.

The humor mostly comes from the repeated humiliations of Ferrell’s character. There’s a public breakdown and a cheesy resolution, but not a lot of laughs before then. This is not the Adam McKay kind of Ferrell-comedy like “The Other Guys” (which got good laughs from a Ferrell-Wahlberg team up), but that’s what it’s trying to be.

“The Letters” (PG) — This loving biopic of Mother Teresa (portrayed

by Juliet Stevenson) centers on her work in the 1940s and ‘50s, reaching out to impoverished people in India. From a

teaching position, Teresa describes (the film doesn’t show it) a moment when she feels the pull to go into the worst slums of Calcutta and reach needy people there. The squalor of the people she feels called to save seems toned down so as not to shock audiences. The biggest sin committed by the film — and done so repeatedly — is the act of telling instead of showing. Pivotal moments and important themes are artlessly doled out in plain English, demonstrating very little faith in the audience.

“A Brighter Summer Day” (NR) — Originally released in 1991, this masterpiece of subtlety and nostalgia is finally getting a restored U.S.

release thanks to some interested parties. Set in 1960 Taiwan, the film follows teenagers coming-of-age in a confusing time, on an island just off the coast of a Communist juggernaut, but still within reach of Western influences. The movie takes its time — all four hours of it — to set up the characters and conflicts.

During the course of a three-hour game there may be, on average, less than an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth of action. And even if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a guy with a dramatic curveball on the mound like Zack Greinke, in most parts of the stadium you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really tell what heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throwing. In the park, the focus is on the outcome of a pitch, rarely is it about the mechanics.

On TV, fans get the familiar centerfield camera view. While this allows you to see the pitch and its velocity and arc, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really an unnatural view, as most people have never watched a game from that angle, that far away. And while it lets you see the batter swing, the best way to take in a batterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s swing is from the side. Granted, great production crews will have extra cameras and offer you brief glimpses, but the experience just never really clicked with viewers and that, probably more than anything led to footballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dominance on TV. Not so on the radio, where the attention is on the details. A good announcer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; of which there are many â&#x20AC;&#x201D; adheres to the storytelling tradition during a classic baseball broadcast. They will announce the starting lineups rather than just posting it on your screen, they will describe the details of the uniforms and the atmosphere in the park, and you will better hear the pop of the ball in the catcherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mitt, hum of the crowd and crack of the bat. Descriptions of the play are far more intense, and your imagination can add flourishes to mundane plays youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen a thousand times. Best of all, you can multi-task (my preference being a beer and a porch).

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m no shill, but I have to recommend the MLB At Bat application for both Apple and Android phones to all baseball fans â&#x20AC;&#x201D; particularly those on the go. The app costs $19.99 for the season, $4.99 monthly, and gives you access to every radio broadcast in the country plus being able to see video highlights of key plays if you wish. Other Internet radio sites offer some broadcasts, but MLB At Bat is well worth the money.

Check it for yourself and remember ... yesterday is a canceled check, tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is all the time you have, so spend it wisely.

HOLLYWOOD — Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for the 2013 film “Dallas Buyer’s Club,” then followed it with “Interstellar” (which cost $165 million and made $675 million) and several annoying commercials for Lincoln Motors.

His next film project was the $25 million “Sea of Trees,” with Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe.

After it was panned by critics and booed at The Cannes Film Festival in May, it was pulled from

•1 tablespoon olive oil •1 pound lean ground beef •4 ounces small shiitake mushrooms •Kosher salt •Pepper •2 tablespoons tomato paste •1/2 cup frozen pearl onions •1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves •3 tablespoon all-purpose flour •8 ounces stout (we used Guinness) •2 cup frozen butternut squash pieces •1 cup frozen peas •1 refrigerated rolled pie crust •1 large egg Heat oven to 375 F. Heat the oil in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the beef, mushrooms and 3/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper, and cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Spoon off and discard any fat.

Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in the onions and thyme, then sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds.

Add the stout and simmer until the liquid has thickened, about 1 minute. Add 1/2 cup water and bring to a simmer. Add the squash and peas, return to a simmer, then remove from heat.

(This whole step takes only 2 to 3 minutes total.)

Unroll the pastry on a cutting board, brush with the egg, then cut a cross in the center. Lay the dough on top of the beef mixture (egg-side up), gently pressing the edges around the inside of the skillet. Bake until golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

people returning in disbelief? This could start a new trend. Reynolds’ next is “Criminal,” with Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones, out April 15, but don’t expect a nude scene from him or his two Oscar-winning costars in this one.

Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, last seen in “The Age of Adaline,” plays a blind girl who regains her sight in “All I See Is You” (no date yet), and a young woman stranded on a buoy with a great white shark between her and the shore in “The Shallows” (due June 24).

Peanuts and their creamy offshoot, peanut butter, are popular snack foods and lunchtime staples. The distinct and mild flavor of peanuts attracts many people to these shelled legumes, which many might be surprised to learn aren’t true nuts.

An interesting and unusual plant, the peanut plant flowers above the ground but bears fruit below the ground, according to Whitley’s Peanut Factory. Peanuts do not grow on trees, nor do they form on roots.

When peanut flowers are pollinated, they begin to grow and lose their petals. The bud, or “peg,” grows downward, forming a small stem that pushes into the soil.

While there are many varieties of peanuts, the most common types include the Runner, Virginia, Spanish and

Valencia. Runners are usually found in peanut butters.

Peanuts thrive in warmer climates, which is why they tend to be produced in Asia, Africa, Australia, and areas of North and South America. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia are some of the major peanut producing states in America.

Much of the popularity of peanuts can be traced to George Washington Carver. Carver was born into slavery, but he would become an artist, educator, chemist, and botanist.

He was instrumental in transforming the peanut from a cast-aside item into a cash crop. He also helped develop many different uses for peanuts beyond food.

Carver found that peanuts, which contain protein, could help replen-

ish nutrient-ravaged soils. Rather than plant cotton year after year, he convinced farmers to rotate the planting of cotton with peanuts, thus keeping the soil healthy.

In turn, he developed many more ways the peanuts could be put to use, including how the protein-rich legumes could be used in cooking.

Peanuts then became a popular component of animal feed. Hogs that ate a diet of peanuts and corn could produce high quality hams and bacon.

Today, peanuts are used in cooking oils and lubricants. Peanut oil also makes a decent biodiesel fuel.

Peanuts contain a fair share of monosaturated fats. Considering fat is a major component of many soaps, peanuts can be turned into soaps and other cleansers.

Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place.

Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire.

In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer.

In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal.

Christians believe that commemorating the

death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death.

The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the

Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion.

During these services, the church organ and bells are silent.

Good Friday is one of the holiest days of the year for Christians across the globe. This year Good Friday is celebrated on March 25.

be used in industrial absorbent functions.

Peanuts can be found in fertilizers and mulch used in gardens. Peanuts also can serve as attractive fillers in decorative vases and jars.

Versatile, tasty and relatively inexpensive, peanuts are so much more than just delicious snacks.

Hunger can be a difficult hurdle to clear for people looking to lose weight. While nutritious foods donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lack for taste, many people adapting to new diets featuring healthy, low-calorie foods find themselves still hungry after meals, making it difficult for them to stay the course and reach their weight-loss goals.

Some low-calorie foods may contribute to hunger pangs, but there are many foods that satisfy hunger despite their low calorie count. â&#x20AC;˘ Baked potatoes: Potatoes might be high in carbohydrates, but they also are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost the immune system. Baked potatoes also provide a powerful punch of potassium, which can help men and women better control their blood pressure. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s especially beneficial to overweight or obese men and women

who are already dealing with high blood pressure.

Baked potatoes also can make men and women feel full, which should help low-calorie devotees avoid overeating. â&#x20AC;˘ Eggs: The reputation of eggs tends to change every few years, and much of that can no doubt be attributed to misinformation about this low-calorie breakfast staple. Eggs are a great source of complete protein, and that protein contributes to feelings of fullness. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eggs contain all nine essential amino acids that, upon being digested, release hormones that suppress appetite. â&#x20AC;˘ Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is another excellent and low-calorie source of protein, offering roughly twice as much protein as regular yogurt. Greek yogurt also is an excellent source of

calcium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12.

But Greek yogurt also contributes to feelings of fullness, as a study from the NestlĂŠ Nutrition Institute found that consuming proteins found in dairy products increases satiety. â&#x20AC;˘ Oatmeal: While many people may only eat oatmeal when fighting a cold, this high-fiber and low-calorie breakfast alternative can be enjoyed yearround, helping to fight feelings of hunger all along.

According to the Dairy Council of CaliforniaŠ, oatmeal contains soluble fiber that stays in the stomach for long periods of time. That contributes to feelings of fullness and may just decrease midmorning hunger pangs.

The soluble fiber in oatmeal can also decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is often referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;bad cholesterol.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;˘ Apple: Apples are another lowcalorie source of soluble fiber, and apples also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish

researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as

the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Hunger pangs have derailed many a lowcalorie diet. But there are plenty of low-calorie foods that also satisfy hunger and reduce the likelihood of overeating.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks. Exercise is a great way for men and women to build and maintain strong bones in an attempt to prevent the onset of osteoporosis.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, weight-bearing exercises can help build and maintain bone density. But the NOF notes that men and women who have suffered broken bones due to osteoporosis or

those at risk of such breaks may need to avoid high-impact weight-bearing exercises, which include dancing, hiking, jogging, and jumping rope, among others.

For those whose physicians who suggest they avoid high-impact weightbearing exercises, low-impact weightbearing exercises can help them strengthen their bones. Such exercises may involve low-impact aerobics and using cardiovascular machines, such as elliptical trainers, stair-step machines and treadmills.
