•••• Pet Health The Changing Face of Veterinary Practice Veterinary practice is continually changing as vets and their teams work together to provide the very best service and care for pets, farm animals, horses and other species. Things have been changing behind the scenes too. Many veterinary practices are now owned by large, corporate businesses; as is the case with several in our local area. Others, such as Edgemoor Veterinary Practice and Eastgate Veterinary Centre, are proudly independent and rooted in their communities. This seems to be something that clients appreciate more and more.

Just recently we’ve noticed a change in the questions that new clients ask when they ring or come in to register with us. Two things that now seem very important to them are, “Are you an independent practice?” and, “Do you provide your own out of hours, emergency service?”

It’s questions like these and our determination to be able to answer, “Yes,” to them, that spurred our two practices on to join forces. Eastgate and Edgemoor, based in Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley share the same commitment to the highest standards of care and client service; both are accredited members of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme. They are delighted to be able to use this opportunity to develop the services they offer throughout Ryedale and beyond.

Coming together means that our small animal team can offer a wider range of services, using the expertise and equipment from both practices e.g.

Clients will not have to travel to other practices to see an “emergency vet” as is the case in many areas now.

•••Wine of the Month ••• Segal Judean Hills “ Levant” Colombard, Israel, 2018 January and February have been very busy months tasting new wines for the spring/ summer period. One particular vineyard from Israel really stuck out as a young team full of energy producing some exceptionally quality wines at remarkable value for money. This light fruity white wine is low in sulphates and “kosher” produced.

Israel Wines Israel lays claim to being the birthplace of wine, as there is evidence in the scriptures from 14th Century BC of Canaan (ancient country where Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria lie today) being a popular source of wines to the Egyptian Pharaohs. Nowadays Israel has about 5,500 hectares under vine with a lot of the areas in need of very clever canopy management and drip irrigation in order to survive the hot summers.

Judean Hill Vineyards The vines are planted in the Judean Hills just south of Jerusalem. The higher elevation allows a wide diurnal range with cool nights to slow the grapes ripening resulting in wines with lower alcohol and great freshness. The vines grow in heavy Rendzina soils which are rich in organic materials. The vines are trained using the Vertical Shoot Position trellis system with minimal direct sun-light exposure.

Kosher Wines The term ‘Kosher wines’ is derived from the Hebrew meaning pure. The wine must be produced according to Judaism’s religious law, specifically, Jewish dietary laws (kashrut). For a wine to be Kosher certain regulations must be followed both in the vineyard and winery such as all winemaking equipment and fining of wines must be Kosher. Handling of wines must only be from Sabbath-observant Jews. Kosher wines that are made in Israel are also subject to additional regulations such as every seventh year the winemakers must have a sabbatical year and leave the vines.

About Colombard: Colombard is a white French wine grape variety that is the offspring of Chenin blanc and Gouais blanc. In France it was traditionally grown in the Charentes and Gascony for distilling into Cognac and Armagnac respectively. Today it is still among the permitted white grape varieties in Bordeaux wine, and in Gascony It is also widely grown in South Africa where it is known as Colombar, the wine gives lovely flavours of Guava, and to a lesser extent in Australia and Israel.

Tasting Notes: Light straw in colour with aromas of ripe pears and tropical fruits. On the palate the wine is relatively light bodied with refreshing acidity and a lingering fruity finish.

Great on its own or try with chicken in a cream sauce or goats cheese.
