The Twelve Tips for Christmas……

As Christmas comes around we all look forward to spending time with family and friends, tinsel-covered Christmas trees, yummy food and giving and receiving gifts. As vets, we look forward to these things too, but we don’t look forward to the possible impact of Christmas on our patients! With this in mind here are our “Twelve Tips” for Christmas that we hope will make the festive period enjoyable for everyone, pets included!

1) Check practice opening hours You can find the Edgemoor Vets opening hours on the opposite page and we will operate our own out of hours service as normal. Some practices team up with other practices in the area or divert calls to an emergency service which could be some distance away. So if you are going away over Christmas please be prepared and check what the arrangements will be at your nearest practice.

2) Order food and medications well before Christmas Eve! Every year there is somebody who leaves it until the last minute to order food or medication to tide them over Christmas and New Year! Please allow at least 48 hours for us to order products in.

3) Decorations Some of the decorations we put up over Christmas are hazardous to our pets; eating tinsel can cause an intestinal blockage, and broken glass baubles and dropped Christmas tree needles can cause injuries to feet. You may also find that dogs and cats like to mark the tree and wee on it, so it’s perhaps best to keep them at a bit of a distance from it!

Be aware of the effects that flashing tree lights may have, and make sure that your pets cannot chew the wires.

4) Presents Shiny wrapping paper, ribbons and string can be the best part of Christmas for our pets, but letting them play with these can be dangerous. If swallowed they may cause choking or an intestinal blockage.

5) Leftover food and toxic foodstuffs It’s tempting to give our pets treats but don’t feed leftovers from your Christmas dinner to your pets. It can lead to tummy upsets. Don’t give your pet any meat bones either, these can splinter and cause damage to your pet’s gut or cause an obstruction which could make your pet very unwell.

Several foods are potentially toxic to pets. These include; nuts and chocolate, onion and garlic found in stuffing and raisins and sultanas found in mince pies, Christmas cakes and puddings. If your pet manages to get hold of any food containing these ingredients please contact your vet.

A lot of sweets now contain artificial sweeteners. One such sweetener, called xylitol, can be extremely dangerous to your pet. If ingested, even in small quantities, xylitol can cause big problems. Don’t leave sweets within reach of your pet and if your pet has eaten some sweets contact your vet with the wrapper details as soon as possible.

6) Plants Plants can pose a risk too – holly, mistletoe, lilies and poinsettias are all poisonous so try not to allow your pets near these.

7) Grit – sore paws. The grit that is spread on roads and pavements in the colder weather can be irritating to skin and cause sore paws, so try to rinse your pet’s paws when they come back inside to avoid this.

8) Give pets space/somewhere quiet to hide As wonderful as it is to have friends and family around over Christmas time, just remember that it can be quite stressful for our pets to have lots of people coming to the house and making more noise than usual. Try to give them somewhere quiet to hide away if they want some respite.

9) Routine Pets appreciate having a regular routine so, if possible, try to maintain this even when it is busy and your routine changes!

10) Pets as presents We wouldn’t really advocate giving pets as presents, and certainly not as surprise presents. Having a pet is a big commitment and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

11) Think about animal charities. Think about animal charities At this time of year we try to support local charities as much as we can, so why not spare a thought for animal re-homing centres and also the Wildlife Haven in Thirsk (http://www. thewildlifehaven.co.uk/ or their Facebook page.). We have collection boxes for food, blankets etc. at our surgeries.

12) New Year’s Resolutions: Pet Healthcare Plan and weight loss Thinking ahead to next year…why not make a New Year’s Resolution to help keep your pet fit and healthy in 2019? If you have not already signed them onto our preventative healthcare plan then give this some thought: it will spread and reduce the cost of their regular flea, tick and worm treatments and their annual boosters as well as encouraging you to keep up to date with them. If your pet is overweight then use the New Year as an incentive to try and help them lose weight – we are here to help you with this!

•••Wine of the Month ••• Graham’s Six Grapes Port Port is the quintessential Christmas drink for many. Port and the Douro Valley

The name ‘port’ derives from Porto, the seaport town at the mouth of the river Douro, where most of the wine was brought to market to export in Europe. Today, the city of Porto is where all the port houses cellar and store the wine that is produced in the Douro Valley.

Graham’s owns five mountainous vineyards, which are located in different parts of the best wine-growing areas of the Douro region. Each property has the maximum ‘A’ grade classification. Much of the original wild flora has been left deliberately undisturbed amongst the vines on these estates to preserve the indigenous biodiversity, which Graham’s believes contributes to making wines with a more unique and powerful expression of this terroir.

Six Grapes has won a remarkable 7 gold medals and 2 trophies at the most prestigious international tasting competitions over the last two decades. This is Graham’s Reserve Port and is one of the house’s signature wines with remarkable quality, finesse and elegance.

The distinctive depiction of the six bunches of grapes on the bottle originates from the marks long-used in the Graham’s Lodge to classify the quality of the wines in the casks. The six-grapes symbol is Graham’s age-old mark of quality, used to identify the very finest wines from the best vineyards, which were destined to make up the Vintage Port or Six Grapes lotes.

Six Grapes is a big-hearted wine, sourced from the same vineyards that contribute to Graham’s famed Vintage Ports. It closely resembles a young Graham’s Vintage Port in style: full-bodied, with rich black fruit on the palate, and fragrant blackberry aromas. Six Grapes is bottled when it is still relatively young in order to retain its freshness and characteristic opulence.
