MESSAGE FROM THE
DEAR YORK HOUSE COMMUNITY,
It’s hard to believe that my first year at York House School is complete. Over the last 10 months I’ve continued to experience exactly what I saw when I first came here: a warm, inclusive community of people who deeply care about our students and want to help them succeed.
This past year, we saw our students achieve and accomplish much academically, get recognized in athletic and artistic endeavours, and come together once again at beloved events that we missed during the pandemic. We also saw new initiatives emerge, like our work towards accreditation by CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) and the launch of a new strategic planning process.
It’s an exciting time to be a Yorkie, with almost a century of leadership, academic excellence and student empowerment fueling each school day. Everything that has come before inspires us as we think about what the future holds for York House. We are thinking hard about steps we will make as a progressive school that is always seeking to provide an exceptional educational experience for young people.
We kicked off our strategic planning process in the fall with an inspirational Think Tank session with members of our York House community and experts in innovative fields beyond our doors. February saw the launch of our Board of Governors Strategic planning committee. We then asked the YHS community what it thinks about the future of our school through surveys and focus groups. Now, as we head into the summer, we will analyze what we’ve heard and build a strategic framework that will guide the direction of the new plan.
This strategic plan won’t be just a document that sits on a shelf. Rather, it is a tangible tool we are using to open the door to a world of possibility—for our school, our students and our community. We are dreaming big, asking the right questions and engaging with the multiplicity of perspectives among our community.
By January 2024 we will have a new strategic plan that will articulate both a vision and a concrete plan to take York House School into a future defined by change. Not only will we continue delivering a comprehensive and powerful academic program, but we will also determine and prioritize the skills and attributes our students will need to flourish in a world we can’t predict.
I personally can’t wait to see what we will do next. Thank you to everyone in our community—students, parents, teachers, staff, alums and donors—for making this school year so successful and all your input and care into who we are becoming.
See you in September!
Deryn Lavell
3 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
I am grateful for the experience I have had as Chair of the Board of Governors over the past three years. It’s been a privilege to witness the positive impact York House School is making in the lives of students and see the Board's commitment to stewarding the School for future generations.
As a not-for-profit society, the York House School Society is governed by a board of 12 volunteer governors. Working together with the three advisors representing the Parents’ Association, Alum Association and Foundation, this group thoughtfully engages in the stewardship of the school, focusing on strategy, financial stability, risk and supporting our Head of School. Collectively, these 15 people bring a breadth of experience in distinct fields, diverse opinions, and a shared love of York House School.
The Board works collaboratively with the Head of School, and this year has been energizing and inspirational as Deryn Lavell has planted the seeds of her leadership at the school. Deryn is the right leader for York House at this time. Her experience as an independent school leader is helping us chart a meaningful course for the school’s future. In conjunction with the in-depth preparation for our school’s accreditation as a member of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools network this year, the Board, together with Deryn, has focused significant energy on building the foundation for our next strategic plan.
MESSAGE FROM OUR OUTGOING BOARD CHAIR
We are a school committed to academic excellence and encouraging students to engage in the pursuit of learning and knowledge. As the educational landscape shifts, as it has done quite remarkably over the past three years, we find ourselves with an opportunity to explore exciting opportunities to expand the experiences for our students. The next strategic plan will be informed by future-focused ideas in education as well as input from members of our own community: students, teachers, staff, parents, alums and board members. Each of these perspectives will provide us with insights to weave into the plan. This is an exciting time for York House School.
My fellow alum, Joanne Lee-Young ’90, assumed the role of Chair of the Board in May 2023. Joanne has been a member of our Board for a number of years, is chairing the Strategic Planning Committee and is Past President of the Alum Association. Working together, Joanne and Deryn will continue to chart an inspiring and exciting future for the students at York House School.

MESSSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
A PATH TO CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT
BY KARA MCDONALD ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL
At York House School (YHS), we’re on a learning journey. To prepare students to flourish as individuals and contribute to a changing world involves an ongoing commitment to adapting and learning as a whole school community. Together, we draw on educational research, evidence, and the rich and diverse perspectives of our students, families, and educators to explore what it means to design relevant, meaningful, transformative, and impactful learning experiences for students.
To support this goal, YHS is engaging in a process of accreditation with Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). CAIS is a national network of more than 90 schools which participate in an ongoing cycle of improvement in all areas of a school
including strategy, educational programming, and operations. The accreditation process encourages schools to identify areas of strength and improvement and to engage in a five-year cycle of ongoing self-study, goal-setting, action, and reflection. This is an experiential model that is as powerful for students as it is for educators and organizational change.
YHS embarked on the CAIS Accreditation process in February of 2022. A key question guided our design of the inquiry process: How can we leverage our accreditation process to identify our strengths as a school and grow as a learning community?

CAIS ACCREDITATION
From February 2022 to March 2023, we engaged in a collaborative and participatory process of self-study involving all 135 YHS staff, faculty, and leaders from across the Little, Junior, and Senior Schools. We explored the CAIS guiding questions and criteria for assessment and gathered evidence in order to prepare a SelfStudy Report. Staff and faculty were invited to participate in additional focus and report-writing groups and over 30 people including a YHS CAIS Steering Committee and sub-committees contributed to the writing of our report. Members of the Board of Governors contributed to the process as well as 30 students who participated in focus group discussions to share their thoughts about areas of strength and improvement.

A CAIS Peer Review Team of 11 educators from across Canada visited the School from May 7 - 10, 2023. They met with students, staff, faculty, parents, alums, the Leadership Team and our Board of Governors to experience the School first-hand. At the conclusion of the visit, the Review Team shared that they observed a tight-knit community at YHS—a place of learning, connection, and warmth that we can be proud of. We look forward to receiving the Review Team’s report and building on the strengths of our school. Thank you to all who have contributed to this important process.

I’ve felt included and valued at
School through this process. As
non-teaching staff member, I used to think of myself as serving the Operations of the School. Through this process, we’ve talked about what is important for students to learn, how it is important to learn, and why. That is meaningful for me. I’ve shifted my own thinking about my role at the School. I’ve come to think of myself as a contributor to the education of students.
I feel like YHS’s mission is to build students’ confidence to find your own niche and create a pathway for a future.
Being invited to participate in this focus group makes me feel like the School is listening and cares about getting better for us. That’s pretty cool.

INCLUSION AT YHS
At York House School, we honour, value and support the identity and uniqueness of each student. We are a girls school and we are also inclusive. To guide this work and to declare our commitment to it, YHS has developed an inclusion statement:
At York House School, everyone is engaged in a journey of learning. It is a journey that has no end and offers rich opportunities for growth. We are constantly evolving and together, we are changing how we see the world and our place in it.
York House School is on a path to create a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future. We share the belief that individuals have inherent rights
and deserve to be respected for who they are; that every member of our community belongs here and feels included; that we must treat others with dignity and expect the same in return.
We move toward improvement when we actively deepen our understanding of the things that make each of us unique. It is those differences which strengthen our community and bring the variety of viewpoints and perspectives that spark innovation.
7
INCLUSION AT YHS
The work of this journey begins by examining our personal, curricular and professional development, as well as our institutional practices. We must be courageous, honest and prepared to make the changes necessary to achieve our vision.
There will be challenges, tensions, and difficult conversations, but together we will create an environment where everyone belongs.
Our students are expanding their minds and deepening their understanding of the world. It is to them that we owe this responsibility.
As Community Service Captains and human beings, we are responsible for creating inclusive and comfortable environments by listening to others and their needs. We strive to challenge the status quo and push towards practices that make everyone feel heard. It is important to continually reevaluate our biases and seek ways to support others. We look forward to continuing our efforts to make everyone feel welcome at our school, no matter their identity, and thus do our part to promote inclusivity in all spaces.

LAUREN LECKY AND ANDREA JANG
BY ITA KANE-WILSON ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, ALUM RELATIONS
Andrea Jang ‘00 and Lauren Lecky ‘19 connected via an online summer course offered by Andrea’s commercial real estate company in New York. Their connection has evolved into an enduring mentorship opportunity. We invited them to share their experience.
at Ackman-Ziff. Additionally, through UBC I have been able to build a network within the real estate industry in Vancouver, but this opportunity from a firm based in New York City was something out of the ordinary and an opportunity to meet an entirely new group of people. Over the course of my degree I have participated in a few summer courses and workshops similar to this one, and I think they are a great way to start building a resume and explore new industries, and can also be easily balanced with a summer internship.
What was that experience like and has it influenced your future studies and career path?
LAUREN,
what are you studying at UBC and why did you decide to apply for the online summer course?
I'm currently in my fourth year at UBC's Sauder School of Business, where I am majoring in Real Estate. What first drew me to apply for the summer course at AckmanZiff was that it complemented my studies. At school I've studied real estate investment and real estate finance, topics which directly align with the services provided
I found the summer course to be incredibly worthwhile. I think that any opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and from industry professionals offers a new perspective and lessons based on "real world" experience.
I often find programs like Ackman-Ziff Educate highlight building interpersonal skills and valuable personality traits, rather than the knowledge and technical skills that are taught in school. At the time of participating in the program I was slightly unsure about what I wanted my career path to look like, but understanding the day-to-day requirements of different roles in the firm is helpful in filtering what appeals to you.

Lauren Lecky '19
Andrea’s support and guidance has been extremely valuable to me since we first connected in September. Firstly, it is thanks to her sharing the summer program with the YHS community that I found out and applied for it. After completing the program, the firm paired participants with mentors and knowing Andrea and I are both YHS alum, they paired us together. We first met in September and spoke about real estate, my past work experience, her work experience, and our time at YHS. I felt that us both having attended YHS and having a similar upbringing helped us bond quickly over shared experiences.
At our next meeting, we had a more in-depth conversation about my career path and how my current role in management consulting has transferable skills to the real estate industry. Andrea has a wealth of knowledge about the industry, how it is changing, and how I can build a career plan that aligns with my longer-term goals. Having someone to discuss my thoughts and ideas, bring a new perspective, and offer me insights based on their extensive experience has been valuable as I approach graduation and begin my career.
What advice would you give to Grade 12 students about mentorship and finding a mentor?
My advice for Grade 12 students in finding a mentor is to start the process of building a network in your field of interest. This can be through your family, through YHS or your university, or seeking out mentorship opportunities through the companies in your chosen field. Through my experience in business school, I have seen countless mentorship programs being offered by firms looking to partner with younger generations and teach from their experience. I think a
key part of building a mentor relationship is to not be afraid to show your personality and be vulnerable. Building a connection with someone older or more experienced than you can be intimidating, but the best way to build a personal connection with them is to be yourself and not be afraid to let your guard down. In previous mentorships, I often shared what I thought my weaknesses were or topics in my mentor’s industry I didn’t understand, and that is when the majority of my learning took place. The beauty of a mentorship is that it isn’t a job interview and you aren’t expected to know all the answers. Simply show respect for your mentor and a desire to learn from them.
ANDREA, how important have mentors been to you throughout your career?
When I first entered the Commercial Real estate (CRE) industry in NYC, unfortunately mentorship was not highly marketed or represented for women in CRE. When I graduated in 2009 from grad school, LinkedIn did not exist to the extent it does today and the only way to learn about networks was through word of mouth and college alumni. Given I did not have a large network at the time and the lack of good online platforms to promote networks, I was not aware of women CRE networks being formed when I started at JLL. Today, this is much different with the

Tell us more about that mentorship relationship? Do you connect very often? It sounds like it happened very organically.
industry’s focus on community building and elevating women to senior positions in CRE. I was fortunate to have a few great bosses early in my career who eventually became mentors of mine, but this took a lot of proactive internal networking at my firm with limited resources.
Due to the lack of formal mentorship and networking opportunities when I first moved to NYC, I made a commitment that when I was at a place in my career to give back, I would become an active mentor for women and minorities entering this industry.
Is there any particular instance where you benefitted from having a mentor?
Before I went to college at the University of Pennsylvania, I benefitted from another YHS grad who was a student there and they helped me navigate which student housing to choose and coursework to take. I was very appreciative of her advice. From a professional perspective, as I progressed through my career, I have been fortunate to meet senior leaders who have given me guidance and advice.
What makes a good mentor?
In my experience, a good mentor is someone who is observant and empathetic, and someone who not only provides guidance, but also provides candid feedback. A good mentor is also helpful in connectivity, helping to expand a mentee’s network.
I network by attending industry events and alumni events. I advise young professionals early in their careers to join college alumni groups and affiliate groups at their firm with the goal of helping others.
What tips would you give to Grade 12 students as they embark on their mentorship journeys?
My guidance would be to figure out what you are good at and what you love doing. The intersection of the two is the ideal place to focus. Don’t be afraid to take risks, but learn from mistakes and craft a story around how you overcame the challenge or pivoted to something else. Another tip is to be intellectually curious and present. Lastly, before reaching out to someone you would like to meet, make sure to know your audience: prepare by researching the potential mentor before meeting them. Ask specific questions (i.e., why did you make this decision?), rather than vague questions (i.e., you’ve had an illustrious career, how did you get there?). Specific questions show you have done your homework and thoughtfully prepared for the discussion.

ONTARIO, NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA
ONTARIO
Ita Kane-Wilson from the Alum Office and Maébh Carragher, YHS University Counsellor, embarked on the annual alum trip to Ontario and Quebec to meet up with recent grads and connect over dinner. Alums came out to meet with them in Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston and Toronto. Head of School, Deryn Lavell, and Executive Director of Advancement, Nik Williams-Walshe, joined up in Toronto for lunch with alums who were running between work meetings. That evening, alums congregated in the Queen and Beaver Gastro Pub for dinner and the following morning, alums connected over brunch. It was fantastic to see so many Yorkies engaged and excited to connect with each other.
NEW YORK
The New York gathering took place at the home of Lindsay Forbes, Class of 1996, and it was a roaring success. Close to 30 alums were in attendance including Lindsay’s mom, Nora (Mitchell) Newlands ‘67 and her sister, Kelly (Forbes) Selby ‘01 as well as Lindsay’s daughter, Ava, Class of 2030
A huge thank you to Lindsay for hosting this reunion. We also reconnected with Cristina Concepcion ‘90 for lunch and former head girl, Ally Gomberoff ‘15 and Amelia Kearns ‘05 for morning coffee.
SAN FRANCISCO
Alums came together in San Francisco at the Jax Vineyards for happy hour and even though the weather was less than welcoming, a lovely evening was had. It was wonderful to connect with our alums and special thanks to Victoria Wills ‘10 for the venue recommendation.
The following afternoon, we enjoyed lunch with Emma-Jane Burns ‘22 who met us at the SFMOMA and later that evening, Anjali Katta ‘15 joined us for dinner.
LOS ANGELES
Thanks so much to everyone who attended the LA gettogether in West Hollywood. Special mention to Cindy Delgado ‘89 for the restaurant recommendation. It was a very special evening.

JOINING THE YHS LEGACY SOCIETY
The York House Legacy Society was founded by alum and Foundation trustee, Barbara (Sanderson) Armstrong ’55 in 1999. “Small groups of alums got together to share their ideas on how the school’s scholarship program could grow and how the society would work. We realized that an easy and painless way to give something back was to make bequests in our wills to the York House School Foundation for scholarships and bursaries for future students and we vowed to make it happen,” recalled Barbara. “Of course, there was a lot of reminiscing about the old days, sharing photo albums and much laughter.” Fast forward 24 years later and the YHS Legacy Society has grown to more than 120 members.
When those alums gathered together to discuss York House’s far future back in 1999, they envisioned a thriving, progressive York House with opportunities for students who have potential but perhaps not the financial resources to support their dreams. This is where legacy giving and our Legacy Society intersect. We invite you to consider partnering with the school to share our vision of ensuring future generations of smart, ambitious students can have access to a York House education regardless of their family circumstances.
Are you proud to be a part of our alum community? In planning for your future legacy and thinking about how you would like to be remembered, would you consider leaving the school a gift in your will?
A complete re-draft of your will is not necessary in order to include a legacy donation to support YHS. A codicil is a document used to easily modify and make minor changes to your existing will with little expense.
IT TAKES ONLY THREE STEPS:
1. Call a lawyer or notary to request an appointment for the preparation of a codicil.
2. Make an appointment with the YHS Advancement Office to complete and sign the necessary YHS Legacy Society documents.
3. With your permission, we will add your name to the YHS Legacy Society list and invite you to the Legacy Society Tea and other associated events. You can also choose to remain anonymous.
For any questions relating to legacy gifts to support York House School and our students, please contact Ita Kane-Wilson, Associate Director, Alum Relations at 604-730-2409.

OF ADVANCEMENT
BY NIK WILLIAMS-WALSHE
Looking back on the 2021-22 academic year, I feel a deep sense of gratitude and inspiration for all this community has achieved to strengthen and shape the school for the future.
Every gift collectively has a transformative impact on the school and the lives of our students across our campus. Current examples include our spectacular new science labs in the Senior School, the installation of a new Junior School playground structure in the summer of 2023, and important Reggio-inspired student learning and teaching resources at our Little School.
In addition, donations to the YHS Foundation in support of our scholarships are vital to the ongoing diversity of our school and provide the precious gift of a York House education by removing financial barriers for students and their families.
Raising $1M for the 2021-22 Annual Giving Campaign was a significant milestone for York House along with six grades achieving 100% participation in our Day of Giving Grade Challenge! Your unwavering commitment creates possibilities for our Yorkies and allows
them to flourish within the classroom, on the stage, as part of an Athletics team, or in the great outdoors.
With the school engaging in a strategic planning process to develop a renewed vision for the school, we will need your ongoing partnership to keep moving forward. Our students will always remain at the centre of our mission as we explore what tools, spaces, and opportunities they need to thrive in a vibrant world where change is swift and inevitable.
Thank you for your incredible loyalty and generosity as we continue our YHS journey together.

REFLECTION DAY OF GIVING 2022
MESSAGE FROM CO-CHAIRS SHANNON CHUNG AND PHOENIX SHIH
We've been reflecting on the success of last year's magical Day of Giving. At that point in the year, we were starting to come out of COVID and parents were able to be on campus for the first time in a while. We mingled, shared stories, and enjoyed the coffee and pastries after drop-off. It is a moment we are grateful for and we vow to never forget this feeling as parents, staff, and students were finally able to celebrate our community in person.
While the result was undeniably incredible—with the total exceeding our targets for the year, what stood out more for the Annual Giving Committee was the enthusiasm and willingness to give from all facets of our community. It was a day of the YHS community saying, "Yes–we want to have our donation matched; yes–we want our grade to reach the grade challenge, and yes–I want to be a part of the fitness on the field with our students." It was a chance for our community to show our students the importance of giving - putting our motto "Not for Ourselves Alone" to the test, which we passed with flying colours. It was a positive day of "yes –I believe in York House and we are stronger together". We cannot wait to do it all over again!

THE
STORRS FAMILY A GIFT FOR THE FUTURE
The increasing complexity of our modern world has underscored the need for informed, disciplined, and creative scientists to solve some of our toughest challenges. The participation of women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) has never been more important.
To enhance students’ learning experiences in the sciences, we have renovated all four Senior School Science Labs for the 2022-23 school year. This was made possible through the philanthropic support from a number of YHS community members, including the Storrs family who wanted to contribute to the legacy of York House School for years to come.
The recent redesign of our Senior School Science Labs has transformed them into student-centred, flexible learning spaces that reflect how modern science and design labs function. The revitalized labs include new millwork, flooring, lighting and furnishings along with new smartboards and rolling dividers that double as writing surfaces. These enhancements encourage collaboration, inspire creativity, and support the design-thinking process while allowing students to become more empowered in their learning experience.
We are grateful to the Storrs family for their generous support to revitalize these learning spaces along with their continued committment to the Annual Giving Campaign, Legacy Society, and volunteer time on the YHS Day of Giving.
When we reflect on our decision to send our daughter to York House School, we’re reminded of our incredible first impression of the school and how we immediately felt the warmth and community atmosphere. Without a doubt, York House has exceeded our expectations in every way. We have to thank the individuals who paved the way for our family, and we feel lucky to be part of such a fantastic community.
Our passion for York House is at the heart of our philanthropic decision. Choosing to support the renovation of the Science Labs allows York House to continue offering outstanding learning experiences to current and future students. The enduring success of York House is built on the work of the original founders, previous and current parents, alum, teachers, staff and school leaders all working together to ensure a bright future for all Yorkies.”

ANNUAL GIVING FAMILY FEATURES
TOMMY HE & MICHELLE MIN
We have two beautiful twin daughters currently in Grade two. We believe that giving back and helping the community is our family value and we as a family want to keep this as a tradition, influencing our next generation. Not only do we support the school through financial means, we also volunteer our time through various meaningful events—including the Annual Giving campaign and devoting extensive time to chairing the Tiger Party. We take the school motto “Not for Ourselves Alone” into our hearts and consider the YHS community as our family.
As parents, we want to spend as much time as possible being involved in our children’s school life. Whether it be 15-minute activity sessions at the Little School, attending the dinner-dances, or being at soccer practices. We don’t want to miss any moments in our daughters' lives. We are proud that our twin daughters are learning at York House School, and we are proud to be involved and volunteer with the school wherever possible. We love to continue to be inspired by YHS’ long-standing history, rich culture, advanced academic programs, modern campus, friendly faculty and staff, and most importantly, the family-like YHS parents.
GILLESPIE FAMILY
We are the Gillespie Family consisting of Joanne, Clay, Sarah, and Meagan. I, Joanne, graduated from York House in 1988. Sarah is graduating this year, and Meagan is in Grade 10. Both girls have been at YHS since Junior Kindergarten. We have really enjoyed volunteering with the school, even traffic duty days in the Junior School. It has been a great way to be part of the school community. We have made many good friends with our fellow parents. It has been a great opportunity for us to see the school grow and be enhanced through the Annual Giving campaign.
The people and friendships we have formed are what keep us motivated and continue being involved at York House School. We have had fun participating in various events, volunteering as class parents, and helping out with class activities. Back in junior school, the students would donate books to the library on their birthdays, even though it may seem like something so small, our family loved to do it every year. Helping organize the motherdaughter tea was also an amazing way to see how easily the YHS community will come together to help pull it all together. It was such a fun and rewarding way to give back to our school community!

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE YHS FOUNDATION, MARGOT KEATE WEST '93
My husband and I are both members of the YHS Legacy Society. We’re paying it forward, and as kids who benefitted from scholarships at YHS and St. George's in the 90s, we know what a difference an opportunity at York House can provide.
At our YHS Foundation meeting in February, the trustees had the immense pleasure of hearing from one of our graduating scholars, Jewel Gonzales '23. She shared with us her college entrance essay which described her experience as a Yorkie scholar, and there was not a dry eye in the house. Needless to say, she has since been awarded a spot and a scholarship at her first choice of college, Parson's School of Design at The New School.
Financial support at York House can make a world of difference for a student with great potential. Scholarships set kids on a path towards success that would be otherwise nearly unimaginable, unattainable, and often astonishing. Our support often translates into further awards in post-secondary realms as well. The achievements of our past scholars are truly remarkable, and they make me so proud to be a Yorkie. For the greater community, having these kids in our midst elevates the school experience for all of our
students—raising the bar, striving for true excellence, lifting one another up—this is what "Onward and Upward" is all about. My mission as Chair of the Foundation is to re-engage with our donors and share with them both the gratitude and successes of our scholars, both past and present.
Building new opportunities by growing our endowment, and giving the gift of a YHS education to exceptional students who wouldn’t have an opportunity to attend the school otherwise is something that I want to be a part of. In my view, this is one of the best things that we can do to walk-the-walk of "Not for Ourselves Alone".
Please join me in supporting our efforts to create more scholarship opportunities by giving a gift to the YHS Foundation through our Annual Giving campaign.
Sincerely,
Margot Keate West Chair of the YHS Foundation

FOUNDATION DONOR STORY URSULA BELL
Ursula Bell or Miss Bell as she was fondly known, passed away on the evening of Saturday, November 13th, 2021 at St. John’s Hospice, UBC, with her close friend Mary Pollock at her bedside. After teaching at Crofton House for 11 years, Miss Bell joined York House in 1973 as Head of the Junior School. Throughout her career, she was recognized as an educator who really understood how to spark the imagination and instill a love of learning in her students. High standards and high expectations were Miss Bell’s guiding principles and she had the gift of turning little moments into extraordinary learning opportunities. She also excelled as an administrator for our school. In 1999, Miss Bell became the first non-alum to be presented with the Alum Special Achiever award for the outstanding legacy she left to the school during her 26 years.
She led the construction of the Junior School in 1994 as well as the redevelopment of the Junior School’s bilingual program, the building of the library and the computer room, and the introduction of full-day Kindergarten. Exemplifying the school’s motto, "Not for Ourselves Alone", Miss Bell introduced numerous volunteer projects that engaged our students.
She was immensely proud of the Ursula Bell Bursary that was established upon her retirement in 1999. This fund provides financial aid to Junior School students who require short-term assistance in meeting the cost of tuition.

MIKE DESJARDINS
In December 2011, while in the ultrasound room at Women’s Hospital, we discovered that we were expecting a girl. Not soon after, we decided we wanted her to attend York House School. I had attended Vancouver College and had close friends that were attending YHS around the same time. I later graduated from UBC Commerce with those same women, and they remain close today. We had known Sarah McNeill's daughter, Olivia ‘19, from an early age and, hearing Sarah and her husband Cam speak about the YHS community, we were certain it was the right choice for our daughter and our family; we opted only to apply to YHS.
Even prior to the entrance application parent interview, we were aware that the extraordinary facilities and programs at YHS had been made possible by the generous donations of alums and parents. When the school explained that tuition alone does not cover all the operational costs associated with running the school and the impact giving back has on our students each and every day, we knew that we wanted to contribute. We had a history of being actively involved in the communities we are a part of, which is why when Mike Hudson offered me the opportunity to join the Advancement Committee, it was an easy yes.

UPDATE FROM OUR YHS PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
One of the things we love most about York House is our tight-knit school community. It’s not only our children who are forming life-long friendships at the school. The various PA events held throughout the year, as well as social gatherings organized by our Class Parents, have always helped foster this sense of connection and belonging amongst the parent community. As COVID restrictions began to ease for the 2021-22 school year, we saw the welcome return of our beloved Holiday Market as well as both the Junior and Senior Father-Daughter Dinner Dances.
In addition to their impact as community builders, our PA events also raise funds which are used to support resources and programs for our Yorkies, as well as for scholarships to students who would not otherwise be able to attend York House.
The cancellation of Bid Night and the Tiger Party in the 2021-22 school year, did have a significant impact on the funds that we were able to raise for that year. However, by taking our annual PA Raffle online and creating an online silent auction, we were able to find new ways to continue to support our Tiger Scholarship.
The YHS Parents’ Association is thrilled that 2022-23 has seen a return to in-person events like the Welcome BBQ, the York Rose Ball (in lieu of Bid Night every five years), the Holiday Market, the Tiger Party, and both the Junior and Senior School Father-Daughter and MotherDaughter dance events. With equal amounts of creativity, resilience, and commitment, our Class Parents have worked hard to bring these events back to life.
One of the greatest strengths of York House School is our community. The YHS Parents’ Association would like to thank each and every one of you for your support of our work to maintain and continue building our shared commitment to our school motto, "Not for Ourselves Alone".

A SPEECH FROM TIGER SCHOLAR MARGARITA ARTES CLASS OF 2020
Back in 2015 I began my journey at York House as a Parents’ Association Tiger Scholarship recipient and I noticed fairly quickly just how driven and warm the community was.
On a typical day, I’d walk through the front glass doors and run down the ramp towards the music room hoping that I wouldn’t be late for my 7:15 AM choir practice. And without fail, I always had a friend laughing and running with me so she wouldn’t be late either.
We’d go to our first class after that , and then we’d go to TAG—our mini homeroom. It was like a family meeting everyday with the same group of girls for all of high school; we’d come together, talk about our day or how we felt or what we’re looking forward to. It really was a safe space to feel seen and known. We’d go through the rest of our classes until lunch. Lunch was both a time for friends but also time to get work done—so again there was balance between work and play.
Now I’m at UBC, and when I talk to my UBC friends I’ve come to realize just how unique my York House experience was. Even during lunch break, teachers were willing to help you understand class material. And when they taught the material it felt like they were teaching because they were passionate about their subject and sharing knowledge for knowledge’s sake.
This culture really helped shape my curiosity and drive to discover the world. Even though I’ve learned a lot about problem solving and collaboration through outdoor education trips, volleyball games, science competitions, fashion shows, volunteering, and more, it’s the everyday experiences at York House which gave me the confidence to pursue law, and to go out into the world ready to create new friendships.
So I’d like to thank the YHS Foundation, the Parents' Association, and all of you tonight who support the school by giving to the Tiger Scholarship.
Thank you so much.
