This is York SCHOOL OF ART
YORK SCHOOL OF ART
Welcome to the York School of Art, where a legacy dating back to 1842 meets the aspirations of future artists.
Founded in 1842 as one of Britain’s first provincial art schools, York School of Art nurtured the budding talents of prominent Victorian artists such as Albert Moore (1841-1895), his brother Henry Moore (1831-1895) and Joseph Alfred Terry.
Initially known as York School of Design and situated in Little Blake Street, it moved to Minster Yard six years later and changed name in 1892, following another relocation to Exhibition Square. There, the school was damaged during a World War Two air raid half-a-century later and in 1976, became part of York College at our former Tadcaster Road site. The merger of York College with York Sixth Form College followed in 1999 before the move to our current Sim Balk Lane premises in 2007.
In 2024, it felt like the right time to recognise our historical connection to the York School of Art and the historical importance to the City of York for this much-loved institution. The school has a rich history and legacy, and we are pleased to reconnect York College & University Centre with its past in this respect and emphasise our commitment to art education as an institution.
Our York School of Art courses are firmly established on campus, with students benefitting from the use of our fullyequipped studios and workshops, expert teaching staff and a gallery in which their work (and that of guest artists) is regularly displayed.

RETURNING TO EDUCATION
We’re proud at York School of Art to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students (21+). Returning to education is a decision many make; however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating funding and finance, how to manage your other commitments and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions.
We want all of our students to not only succeed in their studies, but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with those returning to education in mind.
• Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various commitments our students have, be that work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.
• Closer tutor contact - you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career.
• Employment focus - our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post-study employability. We realise many mature students seek out further and higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies.
These are just some of the ways in which we strive to ensure that the students who are returning to education thrive with us. To see some of these things first-hand or to talk to our tutors about the best way to achieve your ambitions, visit one of our Open Events.

WAYS WE WORK WITH INDUSTRY:
INDUSTRY SPEAKERS
Becky O’Leary, Textiles Manager at MYReFactory, spoke to current fashion students about her role overseeing the company’s new sustainable textiles facility in Hull. There, items like high-vis jackets and Royal Mail bags are transformed into fashionable garments. Becky also collaborates with the NHS to turn surgical wraps into teddy bears for children’s wards and works with HMP Humber, where inmates repurpose Bentley car leather into bags. In Sri Lanka, MYReFactory supports rural women who they pay above minimum wage, to craft high-end heritage bags from reed rush and recycled leather.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Media Make-up students have previously secured work experience on both the Peaky Blinders and Dad’s Army set, as well as the CBBC, York Fashion Week, Dustfarm (multi award winning production house), University of York Media students: Independent films, York Photography Network Group, Mammoth Films, Backstage Makeovers, Rowntree Player theatrical productions, Dreamtime Creative and York Stage Company.
EXHIBITIONS
As part of the Enterprise Creation and Development module, 3D Creative Practice student Nicola Francombe collaborated with Friargate Meeting House and the York Quakers to create a ceramic installation celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Religious Society of Friends. Drawing on conversations with Quaker Elders and community members, she produced three large vessels symbolizing openness, decorated with imagery reflecting Quaker values and inscribed with words and reflections from the congregation. Displayed prominently in the foyer, the installation has become a lasting feature that engages visitors, raises awareness of Quakerism and encourages deeper connection with the Friargate community.
MENTORSHIP
Fashion Design & Garment Technology student Mina spent a week with fashion designer Isabelle Randall. Inspired by Isabelle’s guest lecture, Mina took the initiative to reach out and secured a week-long experience, that not only sharpened her technical skills, but also gave her insight into the day-to-day realities of running a fashion business. From, handson learning in the studio to discovering productivity methods like the “Eat That Frog” technique, Mina’s time with Isabelle highlights the power of mentorship, initiative, and learning beyond the degree.
SITE VISITS & FIELD TRIPS
Students from Graphic & Communication Design, Fashion Design & Garment Technology, and 3D Creative Practice visited Thin Ice Press, where they explored Risograph printing as part of their collaborative module, which delves into York’s past, present and future.
Other recent trips have included visits to the Première Vision Show in Paris, York Fashion Week and excursions to London, as well as various factories and museums, offering Graphics students rich insights into industry practices and creative inspiration.
COLLABORATION
Media Make-up students gained hands-on experience by assisting in the simulation of terror attacks at Leeds and York train stations, as well as a staged biking accident in Dalby Forest. These realistic training scenarios were developed in partnership with emergency services, Network Rail and Dalby Forest.
MASTERCLASS
Renowned leather specialist Andrew Bates brought over 40 years of industry experience to a hands-on masterclass with students from our Graphic & Communication Design, Fashion Design & Garment Technology, and 3D Creative Practice courses. This unique session offered students an in-depth exploration of traditional leathercraft techniques, revealing the intricate artistry involved in working with leather. Alongside practical demonstrations, Andrew shared invaluable career advice and insider tips for building a successful future in the creative industries.
INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS
Students on the Film Production & Professional Practice degree completed an advertisement for international toy company Canal Toys’ relaunch of the ‘Pop Colour Camera, as part of their Photo Creator range. Students were tasked with developing a concept, presenting that concept to Canal Toys and then organising and running the shoot. Working with Canal allowed students to experience working with real world international clients, building their skills of developing a concept that will resonate with a given demographic. The final product was so well received, Canal Toys continued their collaboration with the students on two additional marketing campaigns: ‘So Slime’ and ‘Making Memories’. The three campaigns have so far gathered over 360,000 views online.

Our mixed age classes allow for cross-collaboration and sharing of ideas that can generate a wealth of knowledge and understanding beyond that found in textbooks.

Whilst many of our students are from the local area, our flexible learning approaches are also well suited to those who need to commute from further afield. Our Students
We are extremely proud of our students, and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to achieve incredible things or are heading towards a successful career. Here at York School of Art, it is so important to us that we remain connected with our graduates and keep up-to-date with our current students. We just love sharing their successes with their peers and other prospective students, below we hear from four of our students:
Khushi
BA (Hons) Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design (Top-up)
“The College is very welcoming and nice. The teachers are so helpful, and I found my feet very easily here.
I travel in from Manchester by train two days a week, so that’s a big commitment, but I just love being here. I was a bit sad when my Foundation Degree ended, but was happy that I progressed to the BA Top-up course.
I’ve really enjoyed making wigs on the course and I’ve done work experience making them in theatres in York. I would love to make them as a career.”
“I was 28 when I came to York College and, with having a child, what appealed to me most was the flexibility I was granted. A degree is something I’ve wanted for a long time and I also got a First, which is a great achievement for me.
When I left school, I didn’t think the university route was for me, so I went straight into an apprenticeship. As time progressed, I knew I was capable of achieving my goals. I missed learning and it was good to get back into education to get my brain ticking over again.
I’d done hairdressing and a few office admin roles, but I just knew I wanted to do something else. I now have a role working as a Junior Designer with Home.cc and I have the course to thank for that.”
BA (Hons) Graphic & Communication Design
LAURA
TOM
BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice student
“The tutors allow you to express yourself and go down different routes to explore with their guidance. They push you to go in the directions you need to go to get the most out of the course.
I’ve always liked to express myself creatively and I like to be hands-on because I can visualise what I want to make and then make it. The course allows me to aim for perfection and each thing you make gets better and better so you can see the progress you’re making.
You’re given guidance in terms of what you need to improve and how to get better at the craft you’re doing. I also enjoyed the experimenting I was able to do during my first year and wouldn’t even have considered starting some aspects of the course if it wasn’t for doing it.”
“My grandson, who is now at University, came to York College and he kept telling me about this Art course he was on and all the things he was doing and I said, ‘That just sounds great’. So, after hearing so much about it, I asked him if he thought they took on older people, because I’m 83.
He found out for me and I soon learned that it wasn’t a problem. I came to the Open Event and was amazed by the standard of the students’ work here. It’s amazing and so diverse.
Art was a new thing to me. I hadn’t done it since school where I was considered to be not very good, but I was advised that the Access course would be the best one for me and I was given the confidence to give it a go.
It’s been fascinating and a great course to do, because you have bits of everything within it and you learn so much.”
HEATHER
Access to HE Diploma (Art and Design) student
What our recent graduates say about their time with us
“I learnt so much from having Sharon and Emma as tutors. I’ve really developed as an artist and come out of my shell as a person thanks to this course. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity.”
Lily
“The past two years have been a wonderful journey with my tutors and classmates. Despite the challenges I’ve faced along the way, I’ve persevered and grown stronger. I’m truly grateful for the support and friendships I’ve built.”
EVIE
“This experience is something I won’t forget. I hope the friendships made will last a lifetime.”
NICKY
Brooke
“Coming from Scotland to York for class every week motivated me to keep going, knowing that I could accomplish more than the city I grew up in.”
“My tutors went above and beyond to support me during a difficult three years, particularly in my final year due to personal circumstances. I am without doubt that I wouldn’t have been able to complete this degree, never mind get a First, if it wasn’t for the dedication and kindness of everyone who worked on my course.”
Naomi
“The course has provided me with confidence and skills within a variety of media because of the different workshops that we are encouraged to try by the tutors. As a mature student and because of the small cohort, I have made some lifelong friends and am now inspired to start the next chapter of my life.”
GILLIAN
“I have loved being part of the fashion family at York School of Art. Both my tutors and peers have pushed me and helped me create a sustainable final collection I am truly proud off.”
“Josh, Scott, Declan, Brittany and Neil were so unbelievably brilliant to learn with and along with my tutor Dave, they helped me achieve an education that I never expected for myself.”
Fred
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time and learnt a new trade, which I now make a living from.“
Rebecca
“It has been fantastic four years. I have met some wonderful friends along the way. Doing a degree as a mature student has been enriching, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.”
Claire
“Through this enriching course, I have blossomed into a confident individual, embracing my unique style and gaining an in-depth knowledge of the fashion industry. I am now poised and eager to tackle the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.”
