Choices
Choosing the right course or combination of subjects to study after Year 11 is exciting, but can also seem a bit confusing when there are so many options to choose from. So it’s important to look into the range of professions and careers that courses can lead on to.
To give you a little help, the following pages show a selection of possible careers open to you from specific subject areas. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but is a good starting point to help you decide which course area might be right for you.
When looking at specific courses at York College, you’ll also find details of progression routes and opportunities in the ‘Your Next Steps’ section of each course description.

What type of courses can I do?
Which courses have practical content?
How do I become a stage designer?
What careers could I do if I study History?
How do I become a vet?
Can I train to become a chef?
Getting started
There are lots of ways you can find out about different careers and find something to suit your skills.
SEARCH ONLINE
You can find information online about careers, including on the ‘Your Future’ page in the Your Student Support section of our website. Here you’ll find links to useful online resources including how to contact the National Careers Service for confidential and impartial advice and guidance, and a link to iCould, which provides inspiration through video stories as well as practical tips, insight and advice.
Under the Labour Market Information section you can use the Careerometer to explore and compare key information about occupations and identify potential careers. Our careers advisers can also provide e-guidance to prospective students if you can’t find the information you need – just email careers@yorkcollege.ac.uk.
TALK TO SOMEONE
Careers interviews are an ideal opportunity for you to discuss with a qualified careers adviser the areas of work you are interested in. The careers adviser will have a wide range of information they can provide you with to help you make a decision about which subjects you plan to study.
Careers fairs give you the perfect opportunity to get advice about the different routes available to you all in one place. Often with employers, training providers, sixth forms, colleges and universities attending, you can gather the information needed to plan the steps in to your career.
Work experience can provide an insight into employment and the skills required in the workplace. If this isn’t available then why not try and do some volunteer work? It shows you have initiative and the commitment to find out more about what you are interested in. Plus you’ll learn valuable communication and teamwork skills.
Friends, family and teachers can help when you’re thinking about your own skills and strengths. Sometimes it’s hard to be objective so asking someone who knows you can help.
EXPLORE BY CAREER TOOL
Have a look at the Explore by Career tool on the York College & University Centre website to find out about different careers as well as take the profile quiz to find out which careers are based on your interests.

Which route to choose?
When you know what qualifications you need for the career you want to follow, you can work backwards to see what you need to study after Year 11. Often there are different routes available, so you can choose the method of working that suits your learning style, always remembering to try and choose subjects you enjoy.
A Levels
With an academic approach and studying a range of subjects, these qualifications are primarily assessed by written exams (though some have a coursework element in them). They are a route to university, employment or apprenticeships.
T Levels
T Levels are two year courses which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels. They combine classroom theory, practical learning and a significant industry placement. Designed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that they meet the needs of industry and prepare students for work, T Levels will prepare you to progress into a skilled job, or you can choose to take further technical training, such as a higher apprenticeship or degree.
Vocational Courses
These focus on one subject area and are mainly assessed through a combination of coursework and controlled assessment. All levels offer a route to employment and apprenticeships, and Level 3 courses can provide progression to university.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Apprenticeships
These provide on and off-the-job training, working alongside experienced staff, whilst being paid. Degree level higher apprenticeships are also available.
When you apply for a course at college or sixth form, you’ll be asked to write something to say why you want to do the course/ subjects you’ve chosen and what you’re aiming to do when you finish. It doesn’t have to be really long, just a short paragraph is fine.
It’s important that you are interested in the course or subjects you are applying for and what you’ve chosen is relevant to any future plans you have. If you don’t yet know what you want to do then that’s okay, but you do need to show that you have an interest in what you are applying to do.
Your application is the starting point to ensure you study the right course for you and to help you progress on to your next steps. You could get a friend, teacher or family member to read it and give feedback if you’re not sure.

Studied A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths
I chose to study these A Levels as I really enjoyed these subjects at high school. I decided to resit after missing out on university last year and my tutors have been so supportive throughout my time here. I loved the flexibility and understanding provided by the College and my friendly tutors.
I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved and so excited for my next steps. I’m now going on to study Veterinary Medicine at Harper Adams University.

Studied T Level Engineering & Manufacturing
I chose this T Level as it offered a mix of practical and theory work, which I thought would be great preparation to enter the industry. Studying T Level Engineering & Manufacturing provided me with great experience in the area of study I’m interested in.
I chose York College & University Centre as it offered a range of course options and excellent facilities, including new engineering labs.
I’m now progressing to the University of Central Lancashire to study Mechanical Engineering.

Studying Engineering
Draughtsperson Apprenticeship Employer: Siemens
I chose this course because I wanted to get my foot in the door with regards to engineering and I thought that an apprenticeship would be the best option as I could learn on the job and get real experience of working in engineering whilst getting paid.
My experience has been great as I get to learn how things work and why they work, and I can then apply this knowledge to my workshop tasks, which helps to develop my skills and knowledge. The staff are really supportive and are great to collaborate with, they help us develop wider skills as well, such as our professional behaviours, which help prepare us for the workplace.
Studying Applied Science Extended Diploma Level 3
I chose to study this course as I’ve always had a passion for art and it’s something I’ve always excelled at. I visited the College on a Taster Day and really enjoyed it and the environment offered from the College, so it was a great choice for me. My tutors were amazing and really supportive.
I’ve enjoyed my time that much that I’m now progressing to the York College University Centre to study BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice, which I’m really looking forward to. In the future I might start my own creative business.
