Dear York Community, The purpose of this plan is to be prepared to reopen York School during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to provide continuity of instruction for all students. The health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and the community is our priority.

The protocols and procedures in this guide reflect the collective thinking of the COVID-19 Task Force as well as the participation of the entire faculty, staff, and trustees. Hours, weeks, and months of dedicated work have produced this plan. Although this is only a summary of the essential information, the Task Force extensively researched all safety protocols and discussed how to modify our teaching and learning goals in the world of physical distancing. They met several times a week during the summer, and collaborated to design a safe campus and to create a flexible framework for teaching and learning in only 3 months. This is a remarkable achievement. Of course, over the course of this school year, we have continued to update our plan for a safe return to campus and those changes are reflected in the blueprint.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting shelter-in-place order have taken a toll on the social, emotional, and educational needs of students and staff. This plan is intended to renew and revitalize our students’ education. Specifically, this plan describes what protocols will be followed in order to open our school when allowed by the State of California during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goals of our plan are straightforward. We want to safely bring students, faculty and staff back to school by following all health and safety protocols described in this guide. We believe this plan will help to ensure all students receive a high-quality education and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the wider community.

The key principles that inform this plan are to:

1. keep students, faculty, staff, and the community safe and healthy;

2. accommodate the unique needs of our students;

3. ensure equity and access;

4. provide engaging learning environments and keep learning moving forward; and

5. involve key stakeholders in the planning process.

Finally, the Blueprint for Return to Campus 2021 is consistent with applicable state and local orders and is designed to protect everyone, including children and employees who are at higher risk for severe illness. Additionally, the plan offers a framework for York School to continue to meet its mission to inspire and prepare a diverse community of creative, independent thinkers.

STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLBEING The new schedule prioritizes sleep (8:30 start time), a rotation of classes in the schedule, with PATH advisory, study periods, and music and arts during the day.

COLLABORATION TIME The new schedule prioritizes collaboration time by minimizing conflicts for club meetings, tutorial time, department meetings, faculty meetings, and grade-level meetings.

• Class rotation is the same as the “new” schedule unveiled in May 2020 (i.e. Periods 1, 2, & 5 drop the next day).

SCREENING/TESTING PASSIVE SELF SCREENING All students and employees will be required to complete the following questions in the self-screening app before driving on-campus. Employees and students will be asked about COVID-19 symptoms within the last 24 hours and whether anyone in their home has had COVID-19 symptoms or a positive test.

Are you experiencing any of the following: • fever of 100.4 or higher • new cough • shortness of breath • chills • muscle pain • new headache • new sore throat • new loss of taste or smell All responses will be recorded.

HYGIENE PROMOTE HEALTHY HYGIENE PRACTICES York School will teach and reinforce washing hands, avoiding contact with one's eyes, nose, and mouth, and covering coughs and sneezes among students and employees.

• Students and employees must use cloth face coverings.

Face coverings are most essential when physical distancing is not practicable.

• Students and employees should use tissues to wipe their nose and cough/sneeze inside a tissue or their elbow.

• Students and employees should wash their hands before and after eating, after coughing or sneezing, after being outside, and before and after using the restroom.

• Students and employees should wash their hands for 20 seconds with soap, rubbing thoroughly after application, and use paper towels to dry hands thoroughly.

• Employees should model and practice hand-washing.

• Students and employees should use hand sanitizer when hand-washing is not practicable. Sanitizer must be rubbed into hands until completely dry.

Note: frequent hand-washing is more effective than the use of hand sanitizers.

• Ethyl alcohol-based hand sanitizers are preferred and should be used when there is the potential of unsupervised use by children.

WASHING STATIONS/FACILITIES York School has installed proper touchless washing stations throughout the campus that have an adequate supply of suitable cleaning agents, water, and single-use towels.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING CAMPUS York School is taking the following actions to include but are not limited to: • Opening windows and maximizing space between students, between students and faculty, and between students and driver in school vans where practicable.

• Modifying classrooms to ensure students and faculty are safely distanced from each other.

• Minimizing contact on campus between students, employees, families and the community.

• Designating routes for entry and pick up locations. Maps of routes will be posted in each classroom and office. Putting in place other protocols to limit direct contact and placing directional and physical distancing signs to limit physical contact with others as much as practicable.

• Using clear physical barrier screens in spaces where practicable.

• Installing physical distancing signage to guide students to follow protocol throughout the campus.

CAMPUS TRAFFIC FLOW Extensive calculations have been made and reviewed regarding space use both in classrooms and other spaces. Based on these calculations, protocol has been established for the number of students per each specific classroom, the commons, gym, library, Day Hall, etc. Additionally, York's campus traffic flow pattern will help to reduce potential contacts when students and faculty are transitioning from one classroom to the next.

LUNCH TIME All eating and drinking is to take place outdoors with at least six feet of distance between individuals. If unexpected rain prevents outdoor eating, we will make use of all outdoor sheltered space for physically distanced eating.

INCLEMENT WEATHER In the event of forecasted rain, Head of School will make a decision by 7:00 a.m. and families will be notified if the school will shift to distance learning for the day and close the campus.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE York School will not allow entrance to any student, parent, host parent, or employees showing symptoms of COVID-19 (anyone with a history of allergies will be granted an exception).

• All students must comply with the Passive Self Screening steps outlined in the Screening section.

• All students must wash or sanitize hands as they enter campus.

• All students and employees will follow the vehicle traffic plan as outlined by the traffic flow diagram during regular morning drop off/arrival and afternoon pick up/departure.

• All access to campus is via York Road.

• Two pick-up locations MORNING DROP OFF/ AFTERNOON PICK UP York School's campus access plan is developed to maintain a safe and healthy environment and minimize nonessential people from coming to campus.

Supervised departing students will be required to physically distance themselves while awaiting their ride home.

There will be two locations available: 1. Drop off circle (overflow of students will be directed to Gawain Family Theater) 2. Outdoor basketball court

CLEANING, DISINFECTING AND VENTILATION Procedures have been established to clean and disinfect commonly touched objects and surfaces such as: • handrails • doorhandles • faucets • light switches • sink handles • bathroom surfaces • tables • student desks • chairs • copy machines • employee workstations These surfaces will be cleaned with soap and water prior to disinfection.

• York School has established a cleaning and disinfecting schedule in order to avoid both under- and over-use of cleaning products. Classrooms, workstations and commonly used areas will be cleaned and disinfected at EOD (end of day) using disinfectants that are EPA-approved for use against the virus that causes COVID-19. In addition, classrooms and commonly used areas will be disinfected using a fogger during lunch time. Employees are responsible for cleaning their workstations during the day.

• York School will provide diluted DC Pine, and EPA-registered solution (on list N ), in a spray bottle and paper towels in order for employees to wipe down commonly used surfaces before use.

• York School maintenance crew will follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products (e.g., safety requirements, PPE, concentration, contact time, re-entry time, etc).

• To reduce the risk of asthma related to disinfection, York School will use only disinfectant products on list N with asthma-safer ingredients (hydrogen peroxide, citric acid or lactic acid).

• York School will avoid products that mix these ingredients with peroxyacetic (paracetic) acid, sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or quaternary ammonium compounds, which can cause asthma.

• York School will use disinfectants labeled to be effective against emerging viral pathogens, following label directions for appropriate dilution rates and contact times. The School will provide employees training on manufacturer’s directions, on Cal/OSHA requirements for safe use and as required by the Healthy Schools Act, as applicable.

CLEANING, DISINFECTING AND VENTILATION (CONT.) • York School custodial crew with responsibility of cleaning and disinfecting the campus will be equipped with proper PPE including gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection and other appropriate PPE as required by the product instructions.

All products will be kept out of children’s reach and stored in a space with restricted access.

• When cleaning and disinfecting, York School custodial crew will make sure there is proper ventilation. They will introduce fresh outdoor air as much as possible, for example, by opening windows where practicable. When cleaning, the custodial crew will air out the space before students arrive and will thoroughly clean when students are not present.

 Most of the York campus classrooms and offices have high vaulted ceilings and windows and doors that bring air from the outside. To ensure proper ventilation and increase circulation of outdoor air as much as possible during the school day, employees will open windows and doors. All heaters, fans and ventilation systems are outfitted with MERV13 filters. Day Hall classrooms with lower ceilings will have inflow/outflow fans outfitted with MERV13 filters and air purifiers as well as CO2 monitors. Day Hall classrooms with high vaulted ceilings will have the heaters outfitted with MERV 13 filters. York School ensures there are adequate supplies to support cleaning and disinfection practices.

• York School will take steps to ensure that all water systems and features (for example, drinking fountains) are safe to use after a prolonged facility shut down to minimize the risk of Legionnaires' disease and other diseases associated with water.

ILLNESS WHEN A STAFF MEMBER, STUDENT OR VISITOR BECOMES SICK • Isolation rooms have been identified (Room 9 and 10) to separate anyone who exhibits symptoms of COVID-19.

• Employees or students will be immediately sent home or to medical care, as needed, if they exhibit the following COVID-19 symptoms:

 new frequent cough

 fever (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit)

 difficulty breathing

 chills

 muscle pain

 sore throat

 or new loss of taste or smell

• For serious injury or illness, York School will call 9-1-1 without delay. York School will seek medical attention if COVID-19 symptoms become severe, including persistent pain or pressure in the chest, confusion, or bluish lips or face. Updates and further details are available on CDC’s web-page.

• Employees or students who are out ill with fever or acute respiratory symptoms will not be allowed to return to the School until both of the following occur: • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared, AND • At least 24 hours have passed with no fever (without use of fever-reducing medications), AND

• Other symptoms have improved.

• Employees will be provided with paid sick leave or expanded family and medical leave for specified reasons related to COVID-19, as required by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. • York School will provide students and employees coming from higher transmission areas with opportunities for telework, virtual learning, independent study and other options as feasible. York School ensures that students, including students with disabilities, have access to instruction when out of class, as required by law.

• School personnel will monitor to the best of our ability students for symptoms of COVID-19.

ILLNESS (CONT.) If an employee or a student is confirmed to have COVID-19 infection: • York School will inform the campus community of their possible exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace but maintain confidentiality as required by state and federal laws. Additional guidance can be found here. Further information on protecting the privacy of persons with COVID-19 can be found from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

• York School will temporarily close the general area where the infected employee worked or a student attended until cleaning is completed.

• York School will wait 24 hours before conducting deep cleaning and disinfecting of the entire general area where the infected employee worked or a student attended or any other place they may have been, including break rooms, restrooms and travel areas, with a cleaning agent approved for use by the EPA against COVID-19. If it is not possible to wait 24 hours, the school will wait as long as practicable. York School ensures a safe and correct application of disinfectants using PPE and ventilation recommended for cleaning. Disinfectant products will be kept away from students. A professional cleaning service may be used as well.

• Employees cleaning the area will be equipped with the proper PPE for COVID-19 disinfection (disposable gown, gloves, eye protection, mask, or respirator if required) in addition to PPE required for cleaning products.

Symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

• Contact tracing involves individuals who have had “close contact” with a known or suspected case. All contact tracing will be conducted by the health authorities. We will use our attendance data and self-screening data to assist authorities on tracing. York will pay for response testing for a suspected exposure. Know the symptoms of COVID-19, which can include the following:

CAMPUS ACCESS POLICY Access to campus is limited to essential activities only. You should not visit campus unless you have an absolute need to do so.

• Student access is limited to students who have been cleared through the registration process including health clearance via the Magnus protocol, have completed and passed the ‘Student Training-COVID-19 Safety Steps’ and have passed the daily morning passive screening.

• Employee access is limited to employees who have been cleared through all relevant training and have passed the daily morning passive screening.

• Visitor access is not permitted unless preapproved by the School.

• Delivery/Vendor access is permitted for essential services such as mail and shipping, service calls, etc. Delivery and vendor personnel must proceed directly to the main office. All deliveries will be placed in the main office for distribution.

Non-essential services or deliveries should be postponed until further notice.

• Parent/Guardian access is restricted and applies to the entire campus, buildings and grounds. Should the need arise, one day’s advance permission must be granted by the Dean of Students. The school secretary must be notified and called upon arrival to campus. Similar screening protocol for students/staff must be passed including: symptom screening, hand washing or sanitizing and agreement to follow distancing protocol.

• Retrieval of items (lost and found, etc.) will be conducted from a designated pick up point to be established.

TRAINING GOAL Protect students, employees and others in our school community. To do this, everyone should avoid being exposed to the COVID-19 virus and avoid exposing others. With successful protection, the School will be able to continue teaching and working on-campus.

The steps outlined below will help ensure that all health and safety steps are thoroughly and properly understood and practiced.

• classroom ventilation and air circulation • screening practices • meals while on campus • COVID-19 specific symptom identification • dealing with a positive or suspected COVID-19 case: isolation and discharge.

These training and educational materials will be provided virtually or in-person, ensuring distancing is maintained.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment of understanding of the safety policies with regard to COVID-19 will be issued to families through Magnus and the School Secretary will monitor receipt of the acknowledgment from families. All employees will be issued the acknowledgment by email, and receipt of acknowledgment will be monitored by the Business Office.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • York School will not discriminate against employees or students who (or whose families) were or are diagnosed with COVID-19.

• Employees and students who are sick or who have recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 should stay home. York School encourages employees and students to stay at home without fear of reprisal. This policy will be communicated with employees and families.

GENERAL MEASURES COMPLIANCE York School will comply with any and all local, state, and federal response efforts, emergency response orders, or recommendations from various health agencies, including but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA), California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), California Department of Public Health, etc.

York School will continue communication with local and state authorities to determine current disease levels and control measures in its community by: • Consulting with the county health officer, or designated staff, who are best positioned to monitor and provide advice on local conditions. A directory can be found here.

• Collaborating with other local educational agencies in the Monterey County region including the county office of education.

• Regularly reviewing updated guidance from state agencies, including the California Department of Public Health and California Department of Education.

To ensure the safety of our employees and students, the School asks that all employees and students comply with the COVID-19 safety plan. This plan will be updated as needed to ensure that all workers are protected as this pandemic evolves and changes our workplaces.

COMMUNICATION York School will communicate all efforts to maintain health, safety, and security in our changing workplaces, classrooms and commonly shared areas. York School will monitor new directives given, and will relay any updates and changes as they arise.

GROUP WORK York School will commit to encouraging all employees to avoid large group meetings, and follow any updates from the experts in the response to this pandemic, such as: Cal/OSHA, OSHA, CDC, WHO, etc. In order to comply with existing regulations, employees should consider using emails, Google Meet, Zoom, one-on-one meetings at a safe distance, or other technology.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) York School will obtain and supply recommended PPE, such as: gloves, eye protection, masks, soap and water or hand sanitizer as needed. If subcontractors are on premises, York School will work in conjunction with the subcontractor to verify that their employees are provided with the appropriate protective equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES LEADERSHIP (Head of School, Assistant Head of School, Director of Finance and Operations, Dean of Students, Director of Teaching and Learning, Director of Philanthropy and Community Partnerships, Director of Communications and Marketing, Director of Technology and Innovation) • Train all employees and students on safety procedures, changes in workplaces and classrooms, and the new requirements related to COVID-19.

• Implement, monitor, and update the procedure as needed.

• Maintain compliance with this program for all employees and students in the workplace, classrooms, and break rooms.

• Notify Business Office (HR), employees, students and their families, contractors, vendors, etc. if any member of the York School community tests positive for COVID-19.

• Encourage employees to convey anything that compromises their safety in relation to COVID-19.

• Review COVID-19 safety plan with all employees and students, and maintain documentation of training.

• Identify work-related health risks or exposures to COVID-19.

• Develop policies and procedures to ensure physical distancing is enforced.

• Review and modify faculty room usage as required.

• Identify essential job tasks that may create or have inherent COVID-19 exposures. Convey these findings to employees and develop/implement a plan for business operations. Monitor the plan, and make any applicable changes to procedures if an uncontrolled exposure arises.

• Monitor and use the latest COVID-19 health standards developed by trusted leaders in the COVID-19 response efforts, such as: Cal/OSHA, OSHA, CDC, WHO, etc.

• Provide employees with cloth face covers or encourage employees to use their own face covers for use whenever employees may be in workplaces with other persons. Remind employees that cloth face coverings are not personal protective equipment (PPE), but combined with physical distancing of at least six feet, they may help prevent infected persons without symptoms from unknowingly spreading COVID-19.

RESPONSIBILITIES SUPERVISORS (Department Chairs, Deans, Athletic Director, Plant Services Supervisor) • Implement the COVID-19 safety plan for all employees.

• Monitor and investigate any possible violations of the policy.

• Assess the worksite to identify, monitor, or change any possible exposure to COVID-19.

• Notify Kevin Brookhouser or Joyce Sherry immediately if any individual on the site has tested positive for COVID-19, whether that individual is a member of York School or not.

• Notify Kevin Brookhouser or Joyce Sherry if there are any concerns of exposure to COVID-19, or if there are existing uncontrolled hazards on the worksite.

• Convey best practices and changes with employees and students as they evolve.

• Do not allow any large gatherings greater than the established mandates. Ensure distances are maintained from other employees while at work or working with other trades on the school campus.

• Monitor this plan, periodically assess, and convey any changes that may improve it to the Leadership Team.

• If an employee or student is confirmed to have COVID-19 infection, the following steps will be followed:

1. Immediately notify Kevin Brookhouser or Joyce Sherry.

2. Contact the Monterey County Public Health Department.

3. Contact the general York School community, all contractors, vendors, and all other relevant personnel.

4. If anyone has been in contact with an individual who has COVID-19, immediately separate them from others.

5. Have the Monterey County Public Health Department conduct an incident investigation.

6. The infected person should stay home unless they need medical care. When seeking medical care, notify the medical provider of COVID-19 symptoms prior to arrival in the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES ALL EMPLOYEES, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES • If employees and students have symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, then they should stay home. Parents/guardians should notify attendance@york.org of their student’s absence. Employees should notify Andrea Sanico, Kevin Brookhouser, Joyce Sherry, Jon Zeljio or Doug Key of their absence.

• Employees and students should not place their own health or other’s well-being at risk. If employees and students have been exposed to COVID-19, or if there may be a possible risk to exposure, they should immediately notify Kevin Brookhouser or Joyce Sherry.

• Employees and students will wear appropriate face covering as instructed or required by York School or trusted leaders in the COVID-19 response efforts, such as: Cal/OSHA, OSHA, CDC, WHO, etc.

• Employees and students will practice good hygiene and follow etiquette – they will cover their coughs and sneezes using the elbow technique or a tissue. They will wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or clean their hands with at least 60% alcohol based hand sanitizer.

• Employees and students should ensure the proper use of all PPE. • Employees and students will practice physical distancing by canceling in-person meetings, using video or telephone meetings, and maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet between persons at the workplace when possible.

• When employees and students return to school following an illness, they should promptly report any recurrence of symptoms.

GENERAL SAFETY

• Limit or prohibit meetings and travel.

• Lunches and breaks should be taken outdoors and physically distanced.

York School has advised employees and students to avoid non-essential travel, if possible. If travel is necessary, they should check the CDC’s Traveler’s Health Notices prior to travel.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS York school understands it is important to communicate clearly with the entire school community, including but not limited to specifics about the following: • the School’s adherence to state and county re-opening procedures and protocols; • measures it is taking for physical distancing; • alterations to School schedules, field trips, biology labs, extracurricular activities, etc. to help minimize the risk of illness; • the specific cleaning plan (how often specific areas are cleaned, etc.); • any screening procedures the School decides to put in place (i.e. self-screening); • communications to students and employees that they are prohibited from coming to school if they are ill or are displaying any symptoms of illness; • training given to staff and managers that will include identifying anyone who appears ill or has symptoms, separating them and sending them home; and • that the School will remain flexible in addressing concerns as they are encountered.

York School will accommodate employees, as practical, and students who choose not to return to school: • York School will allow employees to continue to work remotely when feasible.

• The School may have to hire a replacement for the employees who decide not to return to work, if remote work is not feasible.

• Employees may request FMLA or medical disability leave due to mental health issues (anxiety, depression) that are preventing them from returning to work. The School will handle these requests on a case-by-case basis.

• The School will accommodate students by providing distance learning options.

• The School will assess what challenges the distance learning option could pose to families and students and adjust as practicable.
