PHASE 1 - NARRATIVE Develop a series of non-drawings that convey the expansion of the topic of interest through the lens of the verb.

- WEAVING STORIES -

Here i have made a line drawing printed on fabric, of the most prominent connections i saw between people in Zhongshan to highlight the intertwined stories.

On the other side of the canvas, i have hand woven a visual representation of the different perspectives of Zhongshan building seen. With the colors representing the murals that are painted in Zhongshan building.

I placed the canvas on to a hand made stand to create ease to view the painting on both sides to represent the two sides of a story telling.

The canvas stand allows to view both sides in any order without any disruption to the story telling.

PHASE 2 - DESIGN DRAWINGS In this phase, a drawing is no longer just a representational tool, but a means to consciously act on your design and as such, becomes a live capturing of your thinking process.

DESIGN BRIEF

Weaving Stories The central theme revolves around "weaving stories" to inspire the creation of a community space in Zhongshan. The primary objective is to infuse the building with narrative elements, historical context, and storytelling components, inviting users to engage with the space in a meaningful and experiential way. The overarching goal is to establish an environment that resonates with the community's identity and encourages a narrative-driven interaction with the built space.

The contextual insights gained from observing three distinct buildings and the vibrant Zhongshan community revealed a tight-knit fabric of individuals pursuing their own endeavors while harmoniously coexisting. This interconnectedness among the people highlighted a strong sense of community and mutual support.

The design concept draws inspiration from these observations, aiming to capture the heartwarming essence of Zhongshan's community, where individuals contribute to daily life with genuine enthusiasm.

The conceptual foundation is rooted in the idea that the stories shared by the Zhongshan community during on-site visits provide valuable insights for the design space. The metaphorical act of "weaving" goes beyond the physical, symbolizing the joining of individual stories to create a collective narrative. The hidden meanings derived from these shared stories serve as a guiding force, illustrating how the design seeks to create a space that not only celebrates individual stories but also weaves them together into a cohesive and enriching tapestry of shared experiences. How different methods of weaving can be shown to create an inviting and interactive space.

REFLECTION In the first phase, I was pushed to think outside of the box to create a connection with Zhongshan. After site visits, immediately noticing the stories that the people of Zhongshan shared had so many hidden and visible connections created a sense of weaving interpretation. So I related my Maldivian tradition of vast methods of weaving to story telling methods.

Creating the first project, hand weaving and fabric printing allowed me to enhance my creative thinking skills to bring to life deeper meanings and stories.

Making sure to create a pattern that tells a story and choosing the colors to represent Zhongshan, all while creating a line drawing to show the hidden connections in Zhongshan.

In the second phase, creating 3d, drawings to relate to my first phase and topic had me in few knots trying to keep it all clear and understandable to the viewer.

This pushed me to try to vision my outcome in a third parties eyes. To make sure that the stories i am trying to tell and share of Zhongshan are clear and creative enough to grab and hold the viewer's attention.

With the swaps of lecturers in between phases and pinups, this helped to see how the third party sees and understands my project. Which helped a lot even though at time is was overwhelming to push myself to create something that was clear and connected to the topic and Zhongshan.

Throughout the semester, i have learned how easy it can get overwhelming and how to ground myself to help myself understand and grow my creative thinking , skills and outcome as well. This has been a wonderful chaotic beginning to the last year of my degree course.

FINAL PINUP I made a handwoven background using yarn to pin up my drawings to maintain cohesiveness through my project phases, from 1 to the final drawings. I also made some keychains to give away to my jury as a token, which they accepted excitedly.

REVIEWERS FEEDBACK

The final review as nerve wracking as it was, I would describe the jury feedback as encouraging criticism.

One of the feedback, or as Mr. Razif said “tit for tat” is when anyone asks how long it took or how long the process was, is to answer in hours than days. As it creates more of a ground to better understand and more impactful. This was shared when they asked me how long i took to weave the first phase.

Ms. Adel shared how my spaces were literal and almost at the end phase. How this made it seem as there were void spaces to fill in the project. So to look more into creating a harmonious mix between conceptual designs and the desired outcome to the project.

Following with after sharing my project, Ms. Turkan, also shared that as i have connected my project to my Maldivian heritage traditional weaving, it is important to create a space that elaborates or embeds the meaning that is meant to be shared. She explained how the spaces i have created were a bit literal and the meaning that is meant was a bit vague or unseen and how to relate the weaving meaning to the spaces can make it better and more impactful.

Understanding the jurys feedback is key for improvement as there is always room for improvement. The jurys feedback encouraged me to try to always understand what the viewer is saying and what they understand as to allow my project to be more clearer. All in all with the guidance of Ms. Aishah and Mr. Vickram this semester has been a wonderful rollercoaster ride.
