Dear Flatbush Family,

The Covid-19 Pandemic, which began one year ago, dramatically changed life as we knew it. In a matter of days, we went from a tightly-knit school community which was built on our numerous social gatherings to one in which we needed to remain physically distant from one another. Against our will, we went from spending hours together daily in our “home” at 1609 Avenue J to being restricted to seeing each other only through the medium of Zoom -- for months at a time. Amazingly, the bonds that tie us together are stronger than what physical proximity allows. Despite the overwhelming challenge, our school community stood together, our connections held up. We were there for one another and, potentially, emerged even stronger than before the Pandemic.

Not long into the Pandemic, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Yanetz came up with an idea. Constantly seeking ways to connect with our students and to help them grow as individuals, Rabbi Yanetz thought it would be cathartic for students to write or in some other creative way express their thoughts and feelings as they endured this challenging time. Of course, in addition to the therapeutic nature of such an endeavor, it would preserve for posterity the emotions our students went through as they lived through this significant historical event. No one was quite certain whether or not our students would have the interest or the emotional fortitude to participate in such a project, especially if we could only communicate with them about it from a distance.

To our great surprise, hundreds of students submitted their creative efforts, a testament to the insight and influence of Rabbi Yanetz and the power of his initiative. This journal represents a sample of the many contributions our students put forward for “The Students Speak” project. We are greatly indebted to the outstanding leadership of Rabbi Yanetz in this project and the assistance he received from colleagues Mrs. Rachel Winkler and Mrs. Carolina Cohen. Most of all, we are in awe of the outstanding work of our students, the students of the Yeshivah of Flatbush Joel Braverman High School. May this work serve as an important historical artifact of this world-changing time period.

INTRODUCTION The goal of the “Students Speak” project was to create a platform for our students to express their challenges and feelings during lockdown. It allowed us to understand the mix of fear and fortitude, determination and devastation felt by our students - to overall shed a light on their new perspectives of an altered life.

We did not want to prescribe rules for their modes of expression and as such any form of expression qualified. You will thus see a variety of genres and mediums from articles and poems to paintings, graphic design and song.

Our goal was to create an interdisciplinary tapestry of expression, to find a way for students to express their talents as they felt best. Thanks to the hard work of our department chairs, teachers, and students, we received hundreds of submissions each as unique and creative as its author.

For our first anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to share some samples of the work created by our talented student body as a reminder and testament to our experiences. While we would have loved to post all of the work submitted, some were private and not for publication.

We would like to thank Rabbi Joseph Beyda, Principal of the High School, for his enthusiastic support of this project, as well as all the department chairs and teachers who participated and assisted with boundless advice. A special thanks must go to Mrs. Rachel Winkler, who supported the project from inception to completion, and to Mrs. Carolina Cohen, who worked her magic in producing such beautiful graphics. The true spotlight and appreciation goes to our students who allow us a glimpse into the complexity of their lives.

I’ve Made My Peace

One of the many things I am grateful for is coming to school and being surrounded by 1,000 of possibly the best people on the planet.; it brings me joy like nothing else. Being in school brings me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that has motivated me to accomplish so much throughout my time in high school. When the global pandemic forced the distance learning program, I was worried for the health and safety of my family and those around me. It took time, but I began to feel a debilitating loneliness. Virtual games with my friends, virtual classes, virtual meetings, slightly mitigated the pain but it lingered. After Pesach, I wanted to actively address this pain. In a sese, I was grieving the life I could’ve been living and I needed to change that. A shift in perspective however, is far easier said than done. I was genuinely afraid of melting into the soffa because of how many rom-coms I’d watched. Since the lockdown had given me the gift of time, I began reading extensively on things I barely know about. I discovered and explored many interests that I plan to pursue in college. Through reading and self discovery, I internalized the fact that lockdown would not be permanent, I will be reunited with the people that I cherish so much, and many people world-wide have taken a new lease on life. The empathy and camaraderie that this disease has elicited, can potentially make the world a better place. Sadly many valuable lives have been lost during this time but soon, the fog will lift, the smoke will clear, and only peace will remain(except for me and my sisters because we can’t stop bothering each other).

Dear Diary, During times of distress and despair many people tend to lose touch with their humanity and morality. They begin to act with the sole purpose of survival and no longer care about others. Contrary to my initial belief, when the Coronavirus emerged in our community I was surprised and delighted to see that people reacted totally opposite. I would have never thought that during a worldwide crisis and global pandemic I would be able to experience and witness amazing things. However, here I am in awe and amazed by those around me.

Within days of the emergence of the crisis new programs were put in place and measures were taken to ensure that the people who needed help during this difficult time would receive it with a smile and open arms. Although our community was hit hard with schools closing, many people losing their jobs, the eldery growing lonely, many people becoming sick, and the stress of the catastrophe around us we rose to the challenge. When schools shut down, new programs filled with Torah learning were put into place to help with the constant boredom and craving for God in our everyday life. When many people lost their jobs, a fundraiser raising almost 2 million dollars took place to make sure that no one went hungry.

When the eldery could no longer receive visitors, programs were put into place to guarantee that they would constantly feel loved. When many people became infected, hatzolah members worked around the clock, treating every patient with love and care, making sure everyone stayed healthy . Lastly, when the stress of the virus caused all of us to feel like we would cripple, our loved ones were there with unconditional love and support every step of the way. Throughout this experience, I have learned how unique and remarkable our community is .I’ve grown to appreciate all of those around me like never before because I know they will always have my back.

My acts of chesed: Over the last couple of weeks I have been assigned to seniors that I call every other day to make sure thy are doing well. I also call a group of people who receive food from SBH weekley to make sure they have all that they need.

The crowd roars, but only she can hear it, because while there is a real basket in her driveway, the opponents and the fans are only in her head. This is COVID-19 basketball.

In the quarantine era of physical distancing and masked faces, real life has become restricted and therefore imagination must soar. As bedrooms become classrooms, and once discarded dolls are the only playmates now allowed to visit, playing sports has been confined to our driveways and our imaginations.

For those of us who love the company of teammates, the hard-earned sweat of accomplishment, the barking of coaches who urge us to give a little bit more, learning how to keep our competitive athletic edge has become a challenge. Athletes and coaches are being tasked with finding new ways to

train and to play, and most importantly, to keep our motivation to excel when the only competition is ourselves.

Whether it is watching old game film to analyze every play, breaking down what we did in the past in order to figure out what we will do in the future, or whether it is doing online drills in modified spaces, adapting our workouts and practice despite the lack of proper equipment, now is the time for true athletes to step up their game. Chesed From Home By: Priscilla Baranoff 3-HN

Phone calls with Grandparents On the left, I facetimed my grandmother (one of many weekly calls) and the smile on her face was priceless. On the right, I facetimed my SBH adopted grandpa which I do every friday. Being on lockdown without seeing my grandparents has been a struggle but seeing the smiles on their faces when I call them makes me remember that there is still goodness and room for chesed.

Donations I made a couple donations so far to different charities this quarantine. As a part of signing up for zumba and dance classes, the instructors hosted zooms for anyone who donated money. Although I’ve always been big on giving donations, seeing that other people also love to help others and they gave up their time for free (as long as donations are made) is such a beautiful thing to witness.

Tehillim Readings During this very difficult time in our lives that are filled with so much uncertainty and fear, I’ve been taking part in praying in several tehillim chats for people that are in need. I have a list of so many names that I compiled and sent to my friends for refuah shelema. One night, someone that I was praying for took a rough turn and was in need of tefillot. I happened to be awake at 4am and so I decided that I might as well do something useful if I’m up anyway and so I said a couple of perakim. Cooking While these times are irregular and can be very stressful for my mom (who homeschools my twin sisters and cares for my whole family), I step up sometimes and help out with cooking as often as possible.

Chesed I Witnessed My little sister had to get stitches a couple weeks ago and someone who heard about it right away dropped off candy for her for when she got home from the doctor. I never saw such a happy little girl after just going through a procedure.

Also, I have a brother with special needs. On Lag Ba’omer, a group of guys came outside my house and danced and sang for him just to bring some light to his life since he hasn’t left the house in over 5 months.

Well the weight of the whole world seems to be on my shoulders Everything I have known and worked for is slowly deteriorating before my eyes I am constantly watching my every move like a hawk Petrified and paralyzed with the fear of possibly infecting my grandmother my family or myself How can a flower blossom When it’s constantly being stepped on?

I’m slowly forgetting.

It’s upsetting.

Dear Diary, (April 26th, day two), I’m getting bored staying at home every Sunday. I remember visiting my grandparents but we’re not doing that anymore. It’s just staying at home, and I’m getting sick of doing the same things every Sunday. Writing, praying, watching…

I wish that we could go outside, and it seems like that won’t ever happen again, With numbers as high as 2.9 million, with 800 thousand recovered and 200 thousand deaths. The United States is even more extreme with almost a million cases, and only around one hundred thousand recovered with fifty thousand dead. I’m getting sick of each day containing the same lame structure. Wake up, pray, write, school, if that is even part of the structure for that day.

Some websites, like livescience.com, mention a second wave of Coronavirus that might be even worse than the first. I hope that this is not true, but if it is, I hope that it’s handled better than the first wave.

It seems like the government is now helping many people with financial assistance, delaying student loan interest, and giving people money who need it, some for the rest of the year. That’s good.

I really want to go outside. I’m staying inside and not doing anything interesting. I’m done not walking anywhere and not doing anything fun. I’m done with my life being a boring melody of the same things. Some people have the problem of the slacking off when they have extra time, but I’m the opposite, and even the watching at the end of the day that I have time for now, is just getting more and more boring by the day.

Chesed Project — A Story Rebecca Toussie

During this difficult time, it is hard to stay sane. Some people choose to spend this time growing and becoming a better person. Chesed is the key to doing so.

Throughout the past month or so, I’ve read about many chesed acts that were done in order to better the world. In specific, I will be talking about this one organization that has recently been created that really made me happy. The organization is called “J-Teen”. This organization’s main goal is to help little kids adjust to online schooling, as it can be hard, especially for young children in elementary school. In this organization, high school students Zoom with younger students and help them with their schoolwork. If the student doesn’t understand something or is having trouble with an assignment, because the material was taught over the computer, the highschooler helps them understand it better. It’s a one-on-one session that I think really benefits these young students in the best way possible during this tough time.

Another organization that I found really great is an organization called “FLAG (Front Line Appreciation Group) Westchester”. This organization is designed to help restaurants make and give food to hospital staff. This act of chesed is very helpful to hospital workers that work so hard, day and night, helping people who are sick with the virus. I haven’t seen these acts of chesed happen in person but I read about them in the newspaper. However, I have seen smaller acts of chesed in person, such as a girl unpacking the groceries for her mom, or a person giving money to a homeless man on the streets. Even though these acts are small they still make a big impact on someone’s life, just like the big organizations do. I hope that this quarantine will end soon, but everyone should take advantage of this time to spread love and kindness and to do more and more chesed, no matter how small!

Dear Future Self, As of today, Monday March 23, the whole world is in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the coronavirus. COVID-19 is infecting hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. The whole world has come to a standstill and everyone is advised to quarantine themselves. I think it is safe to say that most people are panicking, or at least worried. Some may be worried about how they are going to get paid, leaving their house, but mostly the virus itself. Many people in our community have been infected and I’m starting to get scared. Not only am I afraid of COVID-19, but I am mostly scared that it can mutate. The doctors will not be able to create a vaccine for 1224 months, and by that time we will be worrying about COVID-21. This new mutation of coronavirus may be way more deadly than COVID-19.

I am also extremely stressed about this whole situation. I am getting very anxious from staying in my house for so long. I need to be around different people other than my 6 family members. Of course I love my family, but I really miss my friends a lot. I want to be able to go out on the weekends and have actual fun. I know it’s only been two weeks but it feels like forever! Now, the news is saying school is going to be closed for the rest of the year! I hate to say it but I really want to go back to school. I work hard in school because I know how much fun I’m going to have on the weekends and with my friends. That is what pushes me to work hard. I don’t know how much longer I can last with nothing to look forward to.

I really hope this situation gets better fast or else many more are going to be put in danger.

Day 1: April 20, 2020 Today is April 20, 2020, Day 1, and I am supposed to be back in school from Spring break, aka passover break, but, unfortunately, I am not there, I am quarantined in my house, because the world is on lockdown with a world crisis. There is a global virus called the coronavirus, aka Covid-19, which is killing many people. The scary part is that it is a deadly and unknown virus with no cure or vaccine. For the past weeks I have been in my house and online schooling on zoom from 9:30-3:40 with the unanswered question of “when will things get back to normal” always hovering above my head. It feels like I am on a real rollercoaster. No one knows what’s going to happen. I am taking it day by day, but it has been hard and overwhelming at times. Also all the assignments and projects from school is very exhausting, but having shorter classes is great. The thing that I miss the most is not being together with my friends and not seeing everyone in school in person.

Today, there are, worldwide, 2,478,979 total cases and 170,338 total deaths. In The United States, there are 792,076 total cases and 42,483 total deaths. In New York, there are 252,094 total cases and 18,929 total deaths. Also in the news there many things that are getting affected by this virus. According to The New York Times, the one-day death toll in N.Y. state decreases below 500 for the first time since April 2. In addition, it states that the ambulance calls in N.Y. have also dropped. These news have really relieved me and strengthened my hope. Also The New York Times states, N.Y.C. forms a unit on anti-Asian bias as the number of complaints increase. According to CNN, The United States oil markets are collapsing greatly and the oil prices are going down below 0(into negatives). There has been an update from USA Today, that doctors will look for signs in people’s blood that developed antibodies to fight the virus.

So enough about the news, a few days ago on Friday, my maternal grandfather passed away, which was a big let down and I am sad that I couldn’t see him for the last time because of the current situations. I keep my head up for my mom and help around the house like with cleaning and cooking. I have become the “second mom” of my family. Also many of my family friends bring food over like from the restaurant Sunflower, which is one of my favorite restaurants (ps.get the grilled pepper panini, it’s amazing). In my free time I watch movies with my family or binge watch youtube or Netflix(The Fosters-great show). I want to end on the note that I am truly grateful for everything I have, like having enough food and toilet paper in my house. All my supportive friends and teachers that help me go through this crazy time, and all the doctors or nurses that risk their life everyday.

Most of all, is that I am healthy.

Reflection (written on May 21, 2020) Over the last few months, we’ve been stripped of our ability to learn in a normal environment, stripped from some of our families and the outside world. We used to go into school, walk up and down the stairs to what felt like 100 times a day. Had loads of assignments. Many tests. However, I realized that even though we had all of these things, we were unappreciative. Unappreciative of the teachers, faculty, and socialization that we would take for granted.

By now, most of us have learned to cope in different ways. Some bad, and some good. Personally, I have taken on many hobbies. I have started watching my health, really focusing on school, writing more and finding opportunities for the future. It’s an amazing opportunity and I am taking advantage of every moment.

I used to never spend time to myself relaxing, reading a book, writing for fun, working out or just watching a movie or show. I was so focused on which assignments I had due and which tests were coming up. Now, although I do focus on those things, I can also focus on myself and my well-being.

It’s amazing that a virus can do this to an entire world full of people. Yet, even though we are upset by the ‘social distancing’ rule, we have been able to completely turn our lives around, and I am proud that we’ve been able to do so. Hopefully, this will all end soon and we can return to our old and normal lives.

It’s all about the little things: A quick phone call, A donation, A socially distanced visit, A quick meal, The possibilities are endless.

From all corners of the world, there is struggling.

Charity is what units.

The small things have made the largest difference.

Every endeavour has lead to success.

An achievement helping someone, somewhere.

A Letter to Naomi Hi Ms. ----, I’m Stephanie Tarrab, a student from the Yeshivah of Flatbush. Today, in one of my online classes, your father came on and shared with us what you wrote about your experiences in the hospital during these crazy times. I was just in awe and close to tears when I heard of everything you guys go through on the daily, especially nowadays. I appreciate everything that you do. It’s such a huge commitment and I admire you for pushing through even though it means separating yourself from your family. Not only are you constantly working, you also don’t have much relief when coming home to an empty house and separating yourself. Wow. I can only begin to imagine what it’s like. It’s tireless work and a new world that we know so little about. Thank you very much for devoting yourself to this and putting yourself at risk, while still continuing and persisting. I am lucky to have such heroes that are willing to do this as their life’s work. You are my inspiration.

I might be interested in going into medicine in the future, and strangely enough, hearing what you wrote only strengthened that will. Its people like you that I look up to and that create a model of who I want to be.

This is a terrifying time to live in and you guys are the only ones that can possibly help. You doctors and nurses are literally the most important people in the world right now. I feel like we are in good hands- you always strive to give and sacrifice for us. While I’m upset about not seeing my grandparents over the holiday, you have to isolate yourself and get back to work on Yom Tov. You’ve put my view in perspective, so thank you.

Of course I’ll be staying home and will wave at my grandparents from behind a door. That’s our effort and it’s the least we can do compared to what you guys are doing in the war zone. I can’t fully express how grateful I am to you and your colleagues for everything that you do all year round. You all are really my role models and something I aspire to be. Day 3: Today is May 6, 2020.

I had a math test yesterday and today I had a biology test. I don’t understand why we are having tests. My math teacher basically told us we can cheat. The bio test was easier than I thought, so that’s good. We have so much food in the house! For lunch we had an Israeli theme. We had falafel, Israeli salad, and humus. I have a doctor’s appointment this monday. Don’t worry, I don’t have Corona, I’m just going for a physical. I feel like I have so much work to do, but I know I don’t. School is officially closed for the rest of the year. This makes me sad, and fearful. Israel opened up school for kindergarten until third grade. The hospital Shaarei Tzedek didn’t have anyone in their hospital due to corona!! Go Israel!! I’m also very sad because I can’t march in the Israeli day parade. It’s so much fun! Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, went to a party, and something happened. We don’t know if he just had a heart attack, or he died. I don’t like politics because people just lie, so I won’t care about this unless I get proof. Tik tok is getting boring, but I’m making some about my annoying cousin. I really miss my friends. I wanna see them, and hug them, but I can’t.

The Crown Lynn Franco

A viral disease named after a crown, ironic isn’t itA crown usually builds up someone’s life, But all this crown did was destroy livelihoods.

Teenagers adapting to this new life by staying up late, wasting away precious time.

Since I’m young I’ve always been told that time is the most precious thing, But now I sit home day after day longing for time to quickly pass.

What am I doing with my time?

Nothing — because there is nothing I can do.

Same routine day after day always a cycle I cannot play.

I stay up late watching pointless videos, wondering when I’ll be able to do what they do.

Emotions and thoughts clouding my vision, because all that’s left to do is think.

My mind plays games and that is the cycle caused by Corona, the crown that ruined it all.

¿Cuándo va a terminar? ¿Cuándo podré estrechar la mano de mis amigos, abrazar a mis abuelos, comer dentro, tener una fiesta, hablar con mis amigos en clase?

‫מבוא‬ ‫שמי צפורה קבריסי אני בת חמש עשרה שנים‪.‬‬ ‫בזמן הזה אני גרה בברוקלין‪ ,‬ניו יורק‪ .‬התחביב שלי זה‬ ‫ציור‪ .‬דברים שעשיתי בזמן הבידוד הם ללמוד סינית‪,‬‬ ‫אפייה‪ ,‬ציור‪ .‬הרגשות שהרגשתי בחודשים האחרונים‬ ‫הם של תודה כי אני מבינה עד כמה הבריאות שלי‬ ‫חשובה ואני כל כך אסירת תודה למשפחתי‪ .‬כמה אנשים‬ ‫גרים בבית שלכם עכשיו? מי הם ? וכאן שימו תמונה של‬ ‫המשפחה ההורים שלי‪ ,‬שתי אחיות ואחי‪..‬‬

Pasamos por desarrollos de nosotros mismos

Me siento inmune Con covid en mi aliento

y la forma en que actuamos, pasamos por pérdidas de las personas que amamos y pasamos por toda una pandemia.

Puede que no haya terminado todavía pero si lo pensamos bien, no fue tan malo como hace unos meses.

‫ויש שאומרים סימני משיח הם‪ ,‬ותקוותנו כי הצדק איתם‪ .‬אך שתי נקודות יש‬ ‫להבהיר כדי שלא תצא תקלה מתחת ידם‪.‬‬ ‫ראשית‪ ,‬כי סימנים אינם מספיקים‪ ,‬כבר היו דברים מעולם‪ ,‬והמשיח עדיין לא כאן‪.‬‬ ‫מפני שלא עיקר הסימנים‪ ,‬אלא המעשים‪.‬‬ ‫ושנית‪ ,‬כי הציבור עלול להבין‪ ,‬שמכיוון שהמשיח מגיע כבר‪ ,‬איננו צריכים לעשות‬ ‫עוד שום דבר‪ .‬וכאן היא הטעות‪ ,‬מפני שבזה פטרו את עצמם מכל חובה ואחריות‪.‬‬ ‫החובה העיקרית על האדם היא ‪ -‬להשתנות‪.‬‬ ‫עליו מוטלת האחריות להטיב את דרכיו והתנהגותו‪ ,‬לפני‪ ,‬וכדי‪ ,‬שהמשיח יבא‪.‬‬ ‫השינוי הוא העבודה המוטלת עלנו עכשיו יותר מ‪-‬תמיד‪.‬‬ ‫ואת זה שכחו בהם להעיד‪.‬‬ ‫ומי ששכל בראשו שואל‪ ,‬מדוע עשה ה' ככה לעמו ישראל? הלא דבר הוא‪ ,‬ולא ריק‬ ‫אלא מכם‪.‬‬ ‫ברצוני להציע תשובה‪ ,‬ואם יסכימו מנהיגי הציבור‪ ,‬אפרסמה‪.‬‬ ‫בכמה מקומות למדנו בתורה‪ ,‬שעל פי העונש אפשר להבין מה היתה העבירה‪.‬‬ ‫ואם רצה ה' לסגור את בתי הכנסת ובתי המדרש‪ ,‬אולי שם נמצאת כבשת הרש‪.‬‬ ‫בזמן בית המקדש היו אנשים שהביאו הרבה קרבנות אך לא נהגו בדרך הישרה‪.‬‬ ‫ֹאמר ה'?‬ ‫ישעיהו הנביא אמר אז את דבר ה' )ישעיה א‪,‬יא(‪ָ :‬ל ָּמה ִּלי רֹב ִז ְב ֵח ֶיכם י ַ‬ ‫האם ה' צריך את הקרבנות שלכם?‬ ‫מליוני אנשים היו צריכים להגיד בפסח קדיש וקדושה‪ ,‬אך עכשיו לא יאמרו ברכו‬ ‫ולא יקראו בספר תורה‪.‬‬ ‫האם ה' צריך את התפילות שלנו?‬ ‫יותר מלחפש את החמץ‪ ,‬מצוה עלנו לחפש בנרות‪ ,‬מה לא בסדר בתפילות?‬ ‫ומה לא בסדר בלימוד התורה‪ ,‬שכל כך יחסר בישיבות‪.‬‬ ‫ידועים דברי המשנה במסכת סוכה )פרק ב משנה ט( אם יורדים גשמים בליל חג סוכות‬ ‫זה לא סימן ברכה‪.‬‬

‫המשנה מסבירה זאת על ידי משל לעבד שבא למזוג כוס לרבו‪ ,‬אך האדון שפך לו‬ ‫קיתון על פניו‪ .‬העבד רוצה לשרת את האדון ומגיש לו מים‪ .‬האדון לוקח את כוס‬ ‫המים ושופך לעבד בפניו‪ .‬להראות שאיננו חפץ בשירות של עבד זה‪ .‬כך אם רוצים‬ ‫לקיים מצות סוכה וה' מוריד גשם‪ ,‬ההלכה אומרת שצריך לצאת מהסוכה ולאכול‬ ‫בבית‪ .‬כי ה' לא רוצה את המצוה הזו מאיתנו‪.‬‬ ‫ההשוואה למקרה שלנו ברורה‪ ,‬אם ה' סוגר את בתי הכנסת‪ ,‬ובפרט בפסח !! כנראה‬ ‫שרצונו לרמוז לנו משהו‪.‬‬ ‫והשאלה היא על מה הרמיזה?‬ ‫כדי להבין את התשובה‪ ,‬עלי לשאול רק עוד שאלה‪ .‬שאלה פשוטה אך נוקבת‪.‬‬ ‫כששמעתם וכשראיתם שסגרו את בית הכנסת ובתי המדרש והישיבות‪ ,‬האם משהו‬ ‫בכה? או הוריד דמעה?‬ ‫הרי זה דבר איום ונורא! בתי כנסת שבמשך מאה שנים היו מלאים‪ ,‬בפסח זה יהיו‬ ‫ריקים?‬ ‫כל הרואה משתומם‪ ,‬על בית התפילה ששמם!‬ ‫למי כאב על קול התורה שנדם? ועל ביטול תורה של אלפי תינוקות של בית רבן?‬ ‫לו היה זה חודש אב‪ ,‬מגילת איכה היה קורא כל בר בי רב‪.‬‬ ‫ואולי ה' העמיד אותנו במבחן‪ ,‬לראות האם לא כואב לנו על כך שאין אפילו תפילה‬ ‫במניין‪,‬‬ ‫כי ידוע הכלל‪ :‬כשכואב צועקים‪ ,‬ואם לא צועקים כנראה שלא כואב‪.‬‬ ‫והנה התשובה לשאלה‪ ,‬כי אם לא כואב לנו על על החסרון בקדושת ה'‪ ,‬הרי התגלה‬ ‫שלא זו היתה עיקר העבודה‪.‬‬ ‫אז לשם מה אנחנו באים לבית הכנסת? כדי לפגוש חברים? או כדי להעביר את הזמן‬ ‫עם הילדים?‬ ‫או כדי לדבר‪ ,‬ולשמוע את החדשות האחרונות? כדי להנות מהחזנות והמנגינות?‬ ‫או מהאוכל בקידוש שאחרי התפילות?‬ ‫האם אנחנו באים לבית הכנסת לצורך עצמנו? או בשביל לקדש את שם ה'?‬ ‫אולי הפכנו את הטפל לעיקר‪ ,‬ואת העיקר לטפל‪.‬‬ ‫אפשר לסגור את כינוסנו כדי שנבין שטעות בידנו‪.‬‬

‫אם לימוד התורה הוא רק כדי להתנצח עם דעת השני‪ ,‬ולא כדי להגיע ליראת ה'‬ ‫שהיא הראשית והיא התכלית‪ ,‬מה תועלת בזו התורה?‬ ‫אולי רק כשתיסגר הישיבה נבין את הטעות המרה‪.‬‬ ‫הרי אמרו בגמרא )יבמות סב עמוד ב( עשרים וארבע אלף תלמידי רבי עקיבא‪ ,‬מפסח‬ ‫ועד ל"ג בעומר מתו במגיפה‪ .‬שלא נהגו כבוד זה בזה היתה הסיבה‪.‬‬ ‫ואם רצה ה' להפריד ביננו‪ ,‬אולי אהבת חינם היתה חסרה לנו‪.‬‬ ‫אם בשעה זו כולם בביתם ספונים‪ ,‬וזה עם זה לא נפגשים‪ ,‬הרי ברור שה' רומז לנו‬ ‫שהפרדנו בין הדבקים‪.‬‬ ‫הקנאה והשנאה זה בזה הם סיבת ההפרדה‪ ,‬בפרט דברי רכילות ולשון הרע‪.‬‬ ‫הרבו באהבת חינם בין אדם לחברו‪ ,‬ובעיקר בין איש לאשתו‪.‬‬ ‫עיקר מצות הפסח היא ההגדה לילדים‪ ,‬אך קודמת לה המצוה להרבות שלום בין‬ ‫האחים‪.‬‬ ‫כי אם מריבה בין ילדיך‪ ,‬הם לא יבואו סביב לשולחנך‪.‬‬ ‫הרבו ביניכם שלום ורעות‪ ,‬כי הם שורש האחדות‪ ,‬בלעדיהם לא נצא מן הגלות!‬ ‫הציפייה למשיח היא בכל יום שיבא‪ ,‬ואפילו אם יתמהמה נחכה לו‪.‬‬ ‫אך מפורש אמרו בגמרא סנהדרין )דף צז עמוד ב(‪ :‬כבר כלו כל הקיצין‪ ,‬ואין הדבר תלוי‬ ‫אלא בתשובה ומעשים טובים‪.‬‬ ‫אנחנו לא נדע אלא את מה שנעשה‪ ,‬כי לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה‪.‬‬ ‫זוהי חובת השינוי המוטלת עלנו‪ ,‬לשמור ברצינות על כבוד בית הכנסת‪.‬‬ ‫נדע לפני מי אנחנו עומדים בתפילה‪ ,‬אסור לדבר בזמן התפילה וקריאת התורה‪.‬‬ ‫חובה עלנו לכבד את חברנו‪ ,‬גם אם מנהגו שונה ממנהגנו‪.‬‬ ‫אולי אם את השינוי הזה נשמע ונעשה‪ ,‬אז גם ה' את תפילותנו ישמע ויענה‪.‬‬ ‫תקוותנו שהווירוס ב"ה יעבור מן העולם בקרוב‪ ,‬ושערי בתי הכנסת והישיבות‬ ‫יפתחו לרוב‪.‬‬ ‫ובאם מצאת מוסר במאמרי‪ ,‬והיה זה שכרי‪.‬‬
