Welcome to April’s YM Liverpool!

Kicking things off this month, I’m thrilled to bring you our chat with a Liverpool-born singer-songwriter who has carved out her own unique path in the music industry.

Named one of Amazon Music UK’s Artists to Watch in 2025, Sophie Howarth, aka Luvcat, first came to prominence when her debut single ‘Matador’ went viral on TikTok. Now, she’s set to perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sefton Park before heading to Glastonbury in June.

She spoke with Tom Beattie about her remarkable journey, which has seen her go from busking on the streets of her hometown to walking the BRIT Awards red carpet.

Sticking with rising local talent, I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the stars of acclaimed TV comedy G’wed, which has been streamed millions of times since launching on ITVX last year.

Amber Harrison, who plays Aimee, shares her reaction to the show’s runaway success and offers an insight into the close-knit bond of the young cast.

Elsewhere, the John Lewis team shows us how to set the perfect Easter dinner table, while Heather Marsh helps you get your garden ready for the spring celebration.

Plus, Jon Atkinson profiles a very special Spanish wine company and Will Carr tries the new afternoon tea offering at Voyagers.

own Go your way

From busking on the streets of Liverpool to bunking off school at just 14 to visit Chester’s Faktory Studios, it’s safe to say Sophie Howarth was dead set on making her mark in the music biz. Under the alias Luvcat, she shot to prominence when her debut single ‘Matador’ went viral on TikTok. With highly anticipated shows at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sefton Park and Glastonbury on the horizon, the future looks bright for Sophie and her bandmates. We caught up with the Liverpool-born sensation to discuss her remarkable journey

words tom beattie

The rich diversity of sound and characters within the Merseyside music scene has made it the envy of regions the world over. One emerging star from this parish is the mysterious creative tour-de-force that is Sophie Howarth, who has forged her own unique path in the industry to date.

The musician’s first foray into the industry came as a busker, performing in the bustling streets of Liverpool and Chester. Naturally, this brush with the public came with its own set of challenges, including learning to deal with the tough appraisals of passers-by.

Years on, Sophie allows herself to look back with fondness on this period in her life, with the cathartic and formative chapter preparing her for what has proved to be a successful journey to stardom. The singer recalls a worker in the vicinity once complaining of her playing Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ several times in one day.

I

Armed with a musical education instilled in her by her father and grandfather, Sophie was exposed to an eclectic mix of talents from yesteryear throughout her childhood. From Frank Sinatra, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell to The Waterboys, Van Morrison, and The Cure, this diverse musical upbringing laid the foundation for her to craft her own distinctive sound.

started off as a busker to reach more faces on the street. It can be hard and gruelling. I’m proud that I did that as a kid.

“I started off as a busker, I was already doing pubs and clubs but thought, well I could maybe earn a bit of extra cash and reach more faces on the street,” she remembers. “It’s not an easy job, I’ve got great admiration for anyone busking on the street – it can be hard and gruelling, especially in the winter. I’m proud that I did that as a kid.”

The 27-year-old has enjoyed what can easily be described as a colourful existence to date, having first been discovered by The Verve’s Simon Jones, while playing at a wedding. The Liverpool-born bass guitarist took her under his wing, with this chance meeting proving to be a significant landmark in her rise to prominence.

Sophie reveals: “He found me singing at a wedding at 14 and he’s kind of been like a father figure to me in the industry. I love him, he’s amazing. I used to bunk off school and go to his studio.”

With the help of a Paris-based friend, she eventually played arguably the most seminal show of her career in the French capital – as she took on the moniker of Luvcat for the first time.

“The first show I played as Luvcat was on the River Seine, then I came back to London, where I put a band together,” she explains.

“Paris has really inspired some of the songs I wrote and there’s a lot of French characters who inspired my music.”

After bringing her band together in London, the power of social media brought Luvcat to a worldwide audience, with a TikTok of her performing in a pub in Kilburn having proved a viral sensation. The song that launched her to global attention was ‘Matador’, which features the opening line: ‘Here we are again at the Kazimier Garden’, in reference to the much-loved Liverpool venue.

Sophie’s Merseyside roots are never far from her thoughts, it seems. In fact, the song itself was written the day after playing at the Seel Street staple, she tells me.

With a sound that evokes everyone from Kate Bush, The Velvet Underground and Tom Waits, her music combines alternative rock with a gothic, romantic edge which sets her apart from her contemporaries. It’s hardly a surprise, therefore, that Luvcat is making such an impression among fans and critics alike following her breakthrough on social media.

I’m so proud to be a northern artist. All the boys in my band are from the north too. It’s just the most fun.

The Libertines, fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barât, are unapologetic devotees. Luvcat recently supported the indie legends on their UK tour, with Sophie later speaking of her gratitude to the band for their guidance as they traversed the length and breadth of the country.

“They were sweethearts,” she says. “They were really inspiring and bought me red roses at the end of the tour.

“Peter’s dogs ran on stage while I was playing, it was a real family environment. I loved it. I just love how in love they both are with music and supporting young artists, that’s really inspiring.”

Critical acclaim has since followed in the form of the Breakthrough Artist of the Year prize at Nordoff and Robbins’ Northern Music Awards. Performing a killer two-song set at the event at the Liverpool Olympia, the evening proved to be a landmark homecoming for Luvcat.

Reflecting on a milestone achievement for the band, she says: “I couldn’t be prouder. I’m so proud to be a northern artist. All the boys in my band are from the north too. It’s just the most fun. It was so great to be in a room full of friendly northerners!”

With dates in the diary for Los Angeles, New York and Glastonbury, and a fan base spanning everywhere from Germany to Australia, the sky appears to be the limit for Luvcat. “It’s just amazing, playing sellout shows across the pond, with my best mates,” she admits.

As her career reaches dizzying heights, Sophie’s Liverpool roots remain dear to her, and it is clear that she is looking forward to another trip back to her beloved hometown for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in May, which will take place at Sefton Park.

With her excitement palpable, she adds: “I can’t believe it, I feel I got so lucky with the awards being in Liverpool and then the Big Weekend too… I love Sefton Park too, it’s just stunning. I’m buzzing for it and can’t wait to be back.”

After witnessing her show-stopping performance at the Olympia, I can confirm that the buzz surrounding Luvcat is well justified. Liverpool has provided a launchpad for a plethora of talents throughout the decades and there is every reason to believe that she is on her way to becoming a household name.

Luvcat will perform on the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sefton Park on Saturday, 24 May

Prestigious awards recognise agencies that consistently exceed service standards

CURLETT JONES ESTATES has reaffirmed its standing as a leading estate agency, winning gold at the British Property Awards 2024 for the North West region.

This prestigious awards provider recently announced all regional winners for 2024 after a year of judging.

The Southport branch was named Gold Estate Agent for North West, while the Waterloo branch secured the Bronze award in the same category.

This latest success adds to the estate agent’s strong history, with previous awards including Best Estate Agent in Southport for 2021, 2023, and 2024, and Best Estate Agent for Waterloo and Crosby areas in 2024.

Alan Jones (pictured left), managing director of Curlett Jones Estates, says: “We’re thrilled to be recognised twice in such a competitive market.

“These awards reflect the dedication,

expertise, and customer-focused approach of our outstanding team.

“I am especially proud to have been judged by mystery shops which have proven the quality and level of service we provide in our branches.”

The British Property Awards honour agencies that consistently exceed service standards. Agencies are judged on a 25-point criteria, including mystery shopping, customer service, property marketing, and overall client satisfaction.

The anonymous judging process ensures a fair and accurate evaluation, considering factors like property sales success rates, fallthrough rates, and marketing effectiveness.

Alan adds: “In a rapidly changing market, factors like stamp duty and the Renters’ Rights Bill make it crucial for clients to work with experienced professionals.

“Curlett Jones Estates’ consistent awards success highlights our commitment to transparency, expert advice, and exceptional service.”

Emma is excited to embark on this new chapter as the firm’s first solicitor apprentice and looks forward to qualifying as a solicitor in 2027.

Having excelled in Law at A-Level, Emma’s passion and dedication to the subject led her to pursue a Law degree at the University of Liverpool in 2020. During her undergraduate studies, she sought industry experience and additional qualifications, including becoming a recognised mediator. These experiences enriched her understanding of the legal field.

By 2023, Emma graduated with honours and secured a position at a regional law firm, where she gained invaluable pre-litigation experience.

Tenancy Deposit Protection Claims – Consult the legal experts

Our Landlord and Tenant team at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors can act for you on a ‘No Win, No Fee’ basis to pursue your Landlord for compensation if they did not comply with their deposit protection obligations

If you are (or have been) a Tenant who has paid a deposit to your Landlord, your Landlord is legally required to protect your deposit in a governmentapproved scheme and to provide you with the Prescribed Information relating to the scheme.

If your Landlord failed to do this when they received your deposit, you can make a claim for up to three times the amount of the deposit, plus the return of your deposit.

What is a deposit?

Some Landlords will ask their Tenants for a deposit when entering a tenancy agreement to compensate for potential breaches of the tenancy agreement, for example property damage or rent arrears.

By law, this deposit cannot be any more than a sum equivalent to 5 weeks’ rent if your annual rent equates to less than £50,000. If your annual rent is £50,000 or more, your deposit cannot be any more than a sum equivalent to 6 weeks’ rent.

Your deposit must be protected within one of three government-approved tenancy deposit schemes and your Landlord must also provide you with the Prescribed Information relating to the scheme your deposit is protected in.

Your Landlord must both protect the deposit and provide you with the Prescribed Information within 30 days

of receiving your deposit. If they do not complete both requirements within 30 days, you may be eligible to pursue a Tenancy Deposit Claim against your Landlord.

How much compensation will I get?

If your claim is successful, the Court will order your Landlord to pay you a sum of money equivalent to 1-3 times the amount of the deposit by way of compensation. The Court will also order your Landlord to protect your deposit in a governmentapproved scheme or return your deposit to you.

Therefore, you could receive a sum of money equivalent to up to 4 times the amount of your deposit by way of compensation.

How long do I have to make a claim?

You may be able to pursue a Tenancy Deposit Claim even if you have moved out or are no longer a tenant. You have 6 years from when your deposit was received by your Landlord to make a claim.

What if someone else paid my deposit?

If you paid the deposit on behalf of the Tenant, you may be eligible to pursue the Landlord for a Tenancy Deposit Claim as a “relevant person”.

“No Win, No Fee”

If you are eligible to claim, we will pursue your Tenancy Deposit Claim on a “No Win, No Fee” basis. There are no upfront payments required and if your claim is not successful you will not be charged anything for our services.

If your claim is successful, we will recover our legal fees from your Landlord and will deduct a small success fee directly from your compensation when your claim concludes. You are then entitled to the remaining sum of your compensation.

How do I start the claim process?

If you paid a deposit to your Landlord and they did not protect your deposit and/or did not provide you with the Prescribed Information within 30 days, please contact Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors without delay to discuss your position.

Our dedicated Landlord and Tenant team will be happy to arrange an initial consultation to confirm your eligibility for a Tenancy Deposit Claim, address any concerns and discuss the next steps in proceeding.

We are passionate about enforcing tenants’ rights and holding landlords accountable when they fail to comply with their obligations.

Voyagers

When you tell non-locals you’re from Liverpool, you can probably guess the images that pop into their heads: red (or blue) football shirts, maritime museums, and musicians with bowl haircuts singing about how all you need is love. What they’re probably not picturing? Afternoon tea.

Despite being enjoyed by people from all backgrounds, afternoon tea still carries an inescapable air of poshness for me –perhaps because it originated as a luxury of the upper classes, taken between 3pm and 5pm while the rest of us were out cleaning chimneys. Voyagers aims to put an end to this preconception once and for all with its own take on the classic British tradition –celebrating Liverpool’s rich heritage with a selection of scouse-inspired dishes.

We began with the Cheese and Red Onion Chutney Sandwich and were immediately impressed by the complementary flavours –the chutney’s sharpness balancing beautifully with the cheese’s creamy richness. The Scouse

Inside

the

Liverpool

Tart was a sweet, complex, lemony filling that was just the right side of bitter and comfortably the right side of delectable.

Sausage Roll, inspired by the local meat and potato stew, was nothing short of perfect. Rich and packed with a complex blend of flavours, it’s the final word on sausage rolls –everyone else can stop making them because the recipe has officially been perfected. Served with a tangy beetroot ketchup, I’d have been more than happy if this had been the entire meal.

We found it delightful, but the Salmon and Cream Cheese Sandwich was remarkably strong and might be a little overwhelming for some. However, for those who enjoy bold flavours, the salty, smoky salmon paired beautifully with the milder cream cheese, creating a well-balanced and satisfying taste.

Served on a tiny seeded brioche bun, the Salt and Pepper Chicken Sandwich packed a spicy punch. As I took a bite – carefully avoiding inhaling it whole – I found it to be an appetising addition that disappeared far too quickly.

I didn’t even know we had our own local tart, but I’m glad we do and I’m even more glad it’s this one. A rather unassuming dessert, inside the handsome Liverpool Tart was a sweet, complex, lemony filling that was just the right side of bitter and comfortably the right side of delectable.

If a new stadium wasn’t enough, there’s now something else for Blues to celebrate. The Everton Mint Cake – with its dark chocolate base, creamy filling, and peppermint-flavoured meringue topping –

was a delight. Reminiscent of an indulgent ice cream pie, its deliciousness might just be the one thing fans of both teams can finally agree on.

The Dockers Cake, on the other hand, initially appeared to be a slightly dry fruit cake, but it was far humbler in appearance than in taste – bursting with flavour in every bite.

My partner’s favourite was the Strawberry Fields Macaron, served in a shot glass full of white chocolate ganache and dried strawberries. This was the biggest surprise of the evening – she usually detests white chocolate, but before I could even ask her opinion, she was eagerly devouring the decadent treat. However for me, the standout dish was the Freshly Baked Scones, served with a tangy strawberry jam and smooth clotted cream. After a medley of bold flavours, it was refreshing to return to the basics with a traditional scone that smelled as if it had just come out of my grandmother’s oven.

At £32.50 per person, the price is more than reasonable, and the level of creativity and passion on display is commendable. What’s more, the nation’s most down-to-earth city now has an afternoon tea it can enjoy without any hint of pretension.

A taste of Spain

Jon Atkinson selects four of his favourites from a truly unique wine company

ALTHOUGH IT SOUNDS like it could be a medical condition, Spanish Palate is actually a wine business! It was founded and is run by Nicola Thornton, who is originally from South Yorkshire but has called Toro, in north-west Spain, home for the last 25 years. As is often the case in life, this was not the original plan. However, a nine-month placement in Toro in 1979, while studying for a degree in International Business and Spanish at Liverpool John Moores University, changed everything. Having visited this ruggedly beautiful part of Spain myself on a few occasions, I can certainly see the appeal. However, I suspect its barren and arid landscape wouldn’t be for everyone – no matter how lovely

the vino is! Nicola, however, was completely captivated by the wines, their history, and the associated culture – and she never left. Initially focused on the wines of Toro, Spanish Palate evolved as Nicola’s network of great farmers and producers expanded across the country. Today, her company represents over 100 wines from 20 different regions. Some of these are ‘project wines’, where Nicola and her team produce their own wine using long-established vineyards – such as the ‘Botas de Barro’ and ‘Mi Tractor Azul’ ranges. Others serve as a route to market for more established yet small, independent winegrowers. Below is a selection of my favourites…

Villa Iulia IGP Castilla – La Mancha Sauvignon Blanc 2023 Antonio Florencio, a native of Andalucía, travelled the globe honing his winemaking skills before returning to Spain to start his own project. The name ‘Villa Iulia’ comes from the Roman name for the town near Seville where he was born. However, his high-altitude vineyard (700m) is located in Cuenca, a historic town halfway between Madrid and Valencia. The grapes are handpicked in the cool of early morning, then de-stemmed before macerating with their skins for at least four hours, although this is not an ‘orange wine’. After a 15-day fermentation, the wine is then lees aged for three months. This exceptional organic Sauvignon has a restrained yet elegant nose, with notes of grapefruit and lemongrass alongside subtle vegetal undertones. Dry and nicely fruity, it boasts lovely purity, good structure and balance, and a precise, long finish.

El Alma de Gildo Tinta de Toro 2020 I appreciate that this isn’t cheap, but it is very much Nicola’s ‘baby’ – it comes from Toro, where it all began... and it is rather spectacular! For a long time, Toro was overshadowed by Ribera del Duero, its more established and illustrious neighbour about 100 miles upriver. However, it is increasingly making a name for itself. Gildo was Nicola’s mentor almost from the moment she arrived in Toro, and this wine is something of an homage to him. The concept is simple – an attempt to create the finest possible wine from Toro, using grapes from five unique parcels of very old vines, aged in a carefully curated blend of 12 different types of oak. Opaque purple-black with a vivid ruby-purple rim and substantial viscosity. The nose is initially subdued but opens to reveal a cacophony of aromas – spicy dark berry fruits, old leather, liquorice, tar, menthol, and garrigue. Still very tannic and youthful, this wine is seriously classy, with a restrained yet potent dark fruit character, bitter dark chocolate, black olives, camphor, and graphite. It has excellent length but needs considerable time to mature; at five years old, it’s still very much a baby! £49.95

Pekado Mortal Valdeorras Godello 2023 Valdeorras is steadily building a strong reputation for its wines, particularly around the indigenous Godello variety. While it still has some ground to cover compared to Albariño, the undisputed star of the region, it is definitely gaining traction. This one is made by the irrepressible Martín Padín and his partner under their Pekado Mortal (Deadly Sin) project. It uses fruit sourced from two separate parcels in mountainous terrain, with vines that are 60-80 years old. The soil here is composed of quartz, slate, and schist, which imparts a distinct minerality to the wine. A fresh yet subtle, delicately floral nose, slightly honeyed with hints of almond paste, stone fruit, and chamomile. Dry but quite soft and rich, with a nicely rounded, slightly chalky texture, it has a real mineral edge running through, complemented by citrus notes and green apple pith. The finish is long and tangy.

El Bobal de Estenas Utiel-Requena 2022 Bobal is the third most widely planted variety in Spain, with around 90,000 hectares grown primarily in the province of Valencia. It is most closely associated with the Utiel-Requena region, about an hour’s drive to the west of the city of Valencia. It has long been considered a rather coarse variety, suitable only for blending. However, the likes of Félix Martínez at Estenas are working to change that perception, even achieving the notable Vino de Pago status along the way. This classification is applied to a single estate or vineyard, rather than an entire region, with the aim of further enhancing the quality of Spanish wine. “Medium-depth ruby-red with a ruby-garnet rim. The nose is attractive, with red fruit notes, a touch of rusticity, rhubarb, redcurrant, and a subtle balsamic edge, perhaps with just a hint of volatility. Medium-light bodied with juicy acidity, lively red fruit, and surprisingly firm, yet not aggressive tannins. The finish is long, slightly spicy, and juicy – an excellent ‘lunchtime’ vino tinto! £14.75

Prospect unveils new showhomes in Widnes and releases final phase at Burscough scheme

Abbey Vale and Bridgemere offer a selection of three and four-bedroom homes

WITH NEWLY LAUNCHED show homes in Widnes and the final phase of a canal-side development in Burscough now available, North West developer Prospect Homes is providing a range of housing options throughout the region.

Established in 2000, Prospect is part of The Riverside Group, with all profits from its home sales reinvested into Riverside’s social value projects and communities across the UK.

Between them, Prospect’s Abbey Vale in Widnes and Bridgemere in Burscough offer a selection of three and four-bedroom homes, starting at £310,000.

Samantha Palin, head of sales at Prospect, says: “Abbey Vale is in an up-and-coming area, where those who buy in the early stages of the development have a chance to help shape the new community.

“It’s also likely that as the wider neighbourhood grows, property prices will increase – meaning those who buy now could be ahead of the curve.”

Along with new homes, the development will also include a play area. The properties are being built in the catchment area for a choice of schools, with easy access to the motorway network.

Over at Bridgemere, around 75% of homes

have now been sold.

“We’ve sold eight homes in six weeks, meaning the final countdown is underway at Bridgemere,” adds Samantha.

“The remaining homes available include some overlooking the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. We also have homes in a quiet culde-sac – perfect for families who want their children to be able to play outside.”

Residents of Bridgemere will be able to walk along the towpath into Burscough town centre.

Prospect is also offering to help sellers become buyers with its Part Exchange and Easy Move initiatives.

Opt for a linen tablecloth as a base – any wrinkles are part of the charm – and add a woven placemat to each place setting, with super-simple everyday crockery dressed up with a linen napkin. Try a napkin knot, tucking in a fresh herb sprig or a flower – it’s easy to do, just tie on the diagonal. Those who are more adventurous can attempt a bunny-ear napkin. Add wooden platters and serving bowls and go old-school with dinner candles in modern glass holders. Finish with a splash of spring colour with vases of tulips and daffodils dotted around in simple ceramic vases.

n MAKE IT A FAMILY-STYLE MEAL

There’s nothing better than a big sharing-style serve-yourself meal. Encourage your family and friends to tuck in with side bowls, sauce jugs and roasting tins that look fantastic taken straight from the oven to the table. Don’t forget the serving spoons – and always have a few spare forks and spoons to hand.

UP YOUR GLASS GAME

Elevate your glassware collection this spring with a few new choice pieces. Not everything has to match so pick whatever works for you, but opt for long-stem wine glasses if you want a more refined feel to your table or short stem, recycled glass for a more relaxed vibe. Alternatively, keep the kids happy with bunny tumblers.

Legacie completes landmark 300-apartment tower in Salford

Designed by Falconer Chester Hall, Embankment is the property firm’s second major development in Greater Manchester

Liverpool developer Legacie has announced the completion of Embankment Exchange, its latest apartment scheme and its first technical skyscraper in Greengate, Salford.

Embankment comprises 301 highquality apartments across two towers – Irwell Tower (35 storeys) and Greengate Tower (15 storeys) – connected by a concierge foyer, with a two-storey basement housing a residents’ car park and cycle store.

The development features a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, with residential amenities including a state-of-the art spa with an indoor pool, a residents’ lounge with riverside views, work-from-home booths, a fully equipped gym, and 24/7 concierge. Externally, a large, landscaped communal courtyard provides a green space for residents to enjoy.

Located in Greengate and adjacent to the River Irwell, Embankment also features a riverside walkway, which is set to open upon completion of neighbouring developments.

Designed by Liverpool-based Falconer Chester Hall, Embankment is Legacie’s second major development in Greater Manchester, following the recent completion of Merchants Wharf in Salford. With further projects in the pipeline, the Liverpool developer continues to expand its footprint in the region.

Mike Rider, construction director at Legacie, says: “The completion of Embankment Exchange is a significant milestone for Legacie, marking our first technical skyscraper. This development reinforces our investment in Salford’s thriving residential market, delivering high-quality homes with exceptional amenities. We are proud to contribute to the regeneration of Greengate.”

Gore, director at Falconer Chester Hall, adds: “From the outset, our aim was to create a striking and elegant architectural statement that takes full advantage of the riverside setting and spectacular views across the Irwell.

carefully selected materials that enhance the building’s contemporary aesthetic. It’s fantastic to see this scheme come to completion after years of hard work, providing generous, high-specification homes that complement the character of Greengate and contribute to the area’s ongoing transformation.”

All apartments have been fully sold through Legacie’s exclusive sales partner, RWinvest.

The development will be managed by Legacie’s in-house management team, which is now welcoming residents into their new homes.

Recently nominated for Best Scripted Comedy at the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards, ITV’s G’wed has been a revelation since its release last February. Praised for its distinctive blend of heart and humour, and authentic depiction of life for working-class Merseyside teenagers, the first series had been streamed nearly five million times by mid-April. We caught up with West Derbyborn actor Amber Harrison, who plays Aimee on the show, to discuss her reaction to its runaway success and to find out what we can expect from the highly anticipated third series words lawrence saunders

“We knew we had special”
something

When did your journey to becoming an actor begin?

I first met my drama teacher, Sherril Parsons, at St Edward’s College before joining her drama school, YULA. When I started secondary school, I hadn’t initially planned to pursue drama, but as I took more lessons, my interest grew. Both my older sisters had done drama at St Edward’s, and my mum encouraged me to do the same.

How did you land the role of Aimee in G’wed?

I’d never auditioned for anything before G’wed. My mum messaged Sherril and asked, ‘If you get any auditions, will you send one over for Amber?’ Within three weeks, G’wed popped up, and Sherril thought I should go for it. I sent in a short personality tape, followed by two self-tapes for Aimee and Mia-Louise. After that, I was called back for two in-person auditions and ended up being cast as Aimee! During the chemistry read, I was the only one who had been given a role at that point, so I had to keep it quiet. I was actually the first person to be cast.

The first series was a massive success when it launched on ITVX last February – with almost five million streams by the middle of April. Did you think the show was going to be that popular? And how did it feel when you realised how well it was being received?

Honestly, no, I didn’t think it would be as popular as it has been, mainly because of how other scouse shows had been received in the past. We were all nervous but hopeful because we knew we had something special. Before it came out, we posted a little teaser clip on Twitter, and it got so much hate – we thought, ‘Oh no, this isn’t going to go well.’

But once G’wed was finally released, we were absolutely over the moon with the reaction it got – the feedback was so positive.

journey? Were there any particular scenes or moments that stood out to you as especially challenging or rewarding?

As an actor, it’s a dream to have a role that lets you be funny while also tapping into the emotional side of things. For my first acting job, it was amazing!

Aimee’s relationship with her dad always stands out to me – it’s so special. They’re incredibly close, and she knows she can go to him about anything. No matter what he’s going through, she knows he’ll always be there for her. It’s them two against the world!

Are there any aspects of Aimee’s character that you see in yourself? We’re both very family-oriented and really value our relationships with family and friends. Aimee is also very driven, and I’d like to think we share that quality too.

When you put a group of people together,

you can’t always expect them to click, but we just bounced off each other. I see them every week – we’re in each other’s pockets!

It’s clear there’s a real bond between all the cast members, both on and off screen. Was that chemistry immediate from the first day of filming, or did it take time to develop?

It was there straight away, 100%. We had a rehearsal week where everyone was together every day, and we really gelled. That week helped us so much when we started filming because we already had such a strong bond. We got on like a house on fire!

When you put a group of people together, you can’t always expect them to click, but we just bounced off each other. I see them every week – we’re in each other’s pockets! These people are like my second family, and I don’t think the show would be as good if we didn’t have such a great relationship. It’s so rewarding to see how well everyone is doing

Aimee navigates complex issues involving family, finances, and relationships, all while pursuing her aspirations in acting. How was it diving into the different aspects of Aimee’s

The third series of G’wed starts filming this summer – do you know yet what Danny Kenny has planned for Aimee in the upcoming episodes?

I know little bits and bobs! Danny is brilliant, and we trust him to get it right. We have Zoom calls with him where we discuss the storylines we’d like for our characters, which I think is really important. Having that input allows us to truly grow with our characters –it’s very inclusive.

We’ll have little conversations with him about our characters and their journeys, and then he’ll come back to us with what he’s developed.

Away from G’wed, you’ve also got a role in This City Is Ours. Can you tell us a bit about your character and what it was like being part of such a big production with so many brilliant actors? It was amazing! I play Young Diana, and Hannah Onslow plays Diana. Hannah is such a lovely person and a brilliant actress. I’m so glad I got to play the younger version of her – she’s just unreal. It’s another Liverpool-based show, and it’s great to see our city doing so well in the film and TV scene at the moment.

Do you have any set goals for your career? Aimee dreams of becoming the first person from Merseyside to win an Oscar since Glenda Jackson in 1973 – do you share that ambition? Maybe one day... a girl can dream!

Hundreds of £10 vouchers to be given away ahead of the city’s annual culinary celebration

LIVERPOOL RESTAURANT WEEK is set to return from 10–18 May 2025, bringing exclusive food and drink offers to the city’s best bars, restaurants, and cafés. To mark the occasion, 500 x £10 vouchers will be given away in Liverpool city centre, encouraging diners to explore and support local eateries.

Organised and funded by Liverpool BID Company, the event is designed to spotlight the city’s vibrant restaurant sector. Taking place during a traditionally quieter period for the industry, Liverpool Restaurant Week provides a valuable boost to hospitality businesses while giving food lovers the chance to enjoy special menus and promotions.

Following its successful launch in 2024, the event is back bigger and better, with even more venues set to participate.

Last year’s edition saw over 75 venues participate, with £237,000 worth of offers redeemed and visitors traveling from across the UK to experience the city’s food scene.

Liverpool’s hospitality sector is a major driver of the local economy, with £76 million spent in city venues in the first three months of 2024 alone. In 2022, food and drink spending in Liverpool reached £851m, with the average visitor spending £29.98 on dining out.

Liverpool Restaurant Week helps drive footfall in the city centre, with Bold Street experiencing a 19% increase in visitors last year and an estimated 50,000 additional visitors across the city during the event.

A fantastic lineup of venues has already signed up for 2025, including Leaf, Albert Schloss, Pho, Haute Dolci, Bundobust, The Real Greek, Restaurant Bar & Grill, The Alchemist, Frederiks, and many more.

This year’s offers will be worth £5-£35, and the full list will be available at www. liverpoolrestaurantweek.com

To claim a free £10 voucher, people must sign up for the newsletter to receive details of the giveaway locations. Vouchers can be collected in person at designated giveaway sites on the day. The vouchers are redeemable exclusively at Levy Payer venues in the city centre, with a full list available on the website.

Bill Addy, CEO of Liverpool BID Company, says: “We are delighted to be extending Liverpool Restaurant Week to nine days this year, so people have more time to eat around the city and not miss a weekend. We have had a huge amount of enthusiasm so far and we are excited to see the response to our plans.

“Our ambition is for people to try something new and find a new venue to visit. We know that our first Restaurant Week in 2024 was an incredible success bringing a lot of new diners and a welcome boost to the hospitality sector.

“We have many incredible restaurants across the city centre, so we are delighted for the spotlight to be thrown on them afresh this year.”

Epstein Theatre to hold first test event ahead of official reopening

The much-loved Hanover Street venue is currently undergoing a £1 million refurbishment project

LIVERPOOL’S EPSTEIN THEATRE will hold its first test event in April, ahead of officially reopening its doors for a full autumn season of entertainment.

‘Dancing in the Aisles’, being staged on Easter Sunday, 20 April, will be the first production since the much-loved Hanover Street venue closed its doors in June 2023.

The afternoon cabaret show will be a recurring slot at the Epstein, with the first show being hosted by popular Liverpool actor and comedian Lindzi Germain. The line-up will include singer-songwriter, musician and playwright Asa Murphy, scouse stage and screen star Crissy Rock, LiverBird Victoria Jones and talented vocal trio The Livertones.

Further events will take place over the next few months, including visits by cult stage comedy ‘Beating Berlusconi!’, Laughterhouse Comedy and an extra Liverpool date for the new touring stage show ‘Something About

Lennon – The John Lennon Story’.

A full autumn schedule will be launched with a special gala night on Friday, 19 September – Brian Epstein’s birthday – which will feature local acts and celebrities.

The Epstein has also announced a partnership with LMA, which will see the Liverpool performing arts and creative media institution take over the auditorium from 6-23 and 27-30 May to present its degree shows in acting and musical theatre.

The Grade II-listed landmark has new leaseholders and a new management team, which promises a busy programme of entertainment. Ahead of its formal reopening, £1m is being invested in the venue for extensive refurbishment, including refitting the stage with new lighting, stage cloths, and sound, as well as improving the backstage areas.

Time to springaction… into Easter is here!

Heather Marsh shares her top tips for getting your garden ready for this season’s celebration

EASTER IS THE GATEWAY to summer, and although it’s late again this year, there’s not much time left to get your garden shipshape. Every year, I find the task daunting – so much to do… where to start? I tell you, if Stacey Solomon did a special garden edition of Sort Your Life Out, I’d be the first to apply! But if it’s motivation you need, let nature’s wondrous vitality at this time of year be your inspiration.

April is a month of frenzied activity in the garden, with spring in full swing. Birds, bees, and butterflies abound, buds burst forth, and blossom adorns the branches as new life rejuvenates the world around us. With the weather absolutely glorious right now, what are you waiting for? I’m dusting off my spade and rake and heading outside to make a start!

Simply giving your garden a good tidyup and clear-out will instantly improve its appearance. The first and most impactful job? Cutting the lawn.

Spring lawn revival

Before you get the mower out, you’ll need to scarify. This means raking up any winter debris, such as small twigs and leaves, that

may have accumulated in the thatch (the top layer of the lawn). If moss is a problem, making the lawn feel spongy and, in severe cases, choking the grass, scarifying is the only solution.

Using a spring ‘tine’ metal fan rake, you can do this by hand, though it can be tough work if you have a large lawn. However, it’s incredibly satisfying to see the mounds of moss you’ve raked out and realise how much healthier your lawn will be as a result. Hiring a machine is a reasonably affordable option, with both electric and petrol scarifiers getting the job done in half the time and saving you from all that back-breaking labour.

The first cut should NOT be the deepest!

Now, when it comes to cutting the grass, set the mower blades to their highest setting for the first spring cut, and keep them at that height for at least the rest of the month. Mowing too often and too short can damage the grass and actually encourage weeds to grow. Allowing the grass to grow longer will promote healthier growth and stronger roots. I think the ‘No Mow May’ campaign is fantastic. It encourages people to skip mowing for the month of May, letting wildflowers bloom and supporting pollinators and biodiversity.

You can leave your whole lawn uncut or just a small patch, as even trimmed lawns provide valuable habitats for wildlife. To be honest, I’ve never been interested in having a bowling green lawn, and I think we can sometimes become too obsessive about keeping them perfect. Like Monty Don, I’ve reached an age where I take a more laid-back approach. I wholeheartedly agree with him about leaving the grass a bit longer between cuts. As long as your lawn looks relatively

neat and green, what’s the harm in a few daisies, a bit of clover, or a few buttercups?

Feeding your lawn with a good fertilizer at this time of year will boost the strength, vigour, and overall health of your grass. However, be sure to follow the instructions carefully – don’t be tempted to use more than recommended, or you could end up with large brown patches. Alternatively, brushing in a top dressing of finely sieved organic compost can be just as effective, if not better, and it comes at a fraction of the cost of commercial fertilizers.

In the weeds

The next job is pulling up weeds and tidying up flower beds and borders. If you haven’t done this already, now is your last chance to cut back herbaceous plants, dead stems, and flower heads, such as pampas plumes, hydrangea heads, and buddleia. Woody perennials like lavender should also be cut back, but be careful not to cut into bare wood, as new growth won’t sprout from this. Lavender only flowers on existing growth that’s still in leaf. If you’re quick, there’s still time to plant summer-flowering bulbs like gladioli, ranunculus, and lilies. Now is also the perfect time to move, divide, and transplant herbaceous plants. I’m always doing this to fill in the bare spots in my garden. As the weather warms, it’s ideal for them to settle quickly and start growing strong.

Mulching

There’s nothing quite like spreading a layer of mulch or compost to conserve water, suppress weeds, and – most importantly –nourish your garden for the season’s growth spurt. It truly works wonders. All plants benefit from a top dressing of compost, well-rotted manure, or a slow-release organic fertiliser. While many synthetic fertilisers will also do the job, it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Finally, give your patio a good clean. I use a small box of biological washing powder, sprinkling it directly onto the flags, then adding a bucket of hot water. Scrub with a stiff-bristled yard brush, and it works a treat – lifting moss, algae, and stains, leaving your patio looking like new. Patio furniture will also benefit from a good wash using the same solution. Just make sure to wear your Marigolds and goggles while you scrub!

Finishing touches

Pots of various sizes and containers filled with seasonal plants will really add to the finished look. Primulas are cheap and cheerful, bringing vibrant pops of colour instantly. Ready-planted pots of tulips (perfect if you forgot to plant bulbs last December) can look stunning placed in tubs or pots. Violas are the flowers that just keep on giving, flowering throughout the season and beyond. Pots of dwarf daffodils and narcissi are quintessential spring flowers, easily transferred from pots and containers to borders once they’ve finished flowering. Hellebores are another hardy flower that blooms around Easter and are often called the Lenten rose for that reason.

When you finally take off your gardening gloves, maybe pour yourself a nice glass of wine, sit back (preferably in the sun), and admire the fruits of your labour – you’ve earned it! Who needs Stacey Solomon?

Liverpool Gospel Music Festival returns with new venue for 2025

Organised by Liverpool Lighthouse, the festival celebrates gospel’s profound influence on modern popular music

THE UK’S ONLY MAINSTREAM gospel music festival returns on 4 May 2025 at the Liverpool Olympia, featuring top gospel artists, including London Community Gospel Choir, Michelle John, Volney Morgan & New-Ye, Love and Joy Gospel Choir, Reblah, Wayne Ellington, and more.

First held in 2023, the Liverpool Gospel Music Festival (LGMF) was postponed in 2024 due to the summer riots and will now take place indoors. Organised by Liverpool Lighthouse, an Anfield-based charity working to create thriving communities of people living more fulfilled lives, the LGMF is sponsored by Arts Council England, PPL, World Vision and The Souter Trust.

Gospel music is a powerful, uplifting genre with deep roots in black culture, influencing modern popular music. The festival aims to celebrate these origins while fostering community connection. This year introduces an artist development programme (sponsored by PPL) and an expanded Gospel Music into Schools Programme, which has already reached over 14 schools nationwide.

As the festival develops over the next few years, it will also include panel discussions with artists, ‘meet the artist’ events, participatory activities for families and the community, and wider celebrations of black culture.

Anu Omideyi, Liverpool Gospel Music festival director and music director at Liverpool Lighthouse, says: “After the disappointing postponement of Liverpool Gospel Music Festival 2024, we’re absolutely delighted to return with LGMF 2025. We have some of the best gospel artists in the country and we’re so glad to be able to bring together communities from all backgrounds, faiths, and no faiths to celebrate the undeniable power, joy, and love of gospel music.”

New restaurant brings a taste of Santorini to Castle Street

Zeus Taverna’s menu and décor takes inspiration from Greece’s beloved holiday island

BOASTING TEXTURED whitewashed walls framed by turquoise blues, Zeus Taverna opened earlier this month, offering a menu of tapas and small plates featuring favourites like souvlaki, moussaka, and kleftiko, along with appetisers such as tzatziki and dolmades.

In addition to Mediterranean colours, images of Greek gods and goddesses adorn the walls, complemented by trailing floral decorations that reflect the vibrant blooms of Santorini’s gardens. A luminous cave feature evokes the island’s iconic grotto-style buildings. While the menu focuses on traditional Greek dishes, Zeus also offers unique seafood options such as octopus, prawns, and mussels, along with specialty salads.

A spokesperson for Zeus Taverna said: “The refurbishment was both enjoyable and hard. We are so grateful for all the team that helped bring our vision to light and we’re very excited to finally open to the public after facing a couple of setbacks throughout our journey to get to this stage.”
