FOR COMMUNITY

Every day, the Y strengthens communities for kids, adults, seniors and families with programs that protect, teach, connect, heal, nourish and encourage. It is how we help communities and the “us” who live in them find the power of their full potential.

OUR MISSION

To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

OUR IMPACT

The Y is an all-inclusive organization dedicated to making an impact through life-changing services and programs that make our community stronger than yesterday by giving promise for a better future and providing a safe place where everyone belongs.

OUR VISION

We envision our nonprofit organization – in partnership with others – as an intergenerational community hub with programs, services and resources available to all persons, regardless of status or inability to pay, that will enable them to improve their quality of life.

Community Champions,

Last year brought unique challenges, our communities experienced a season of rebuilding, reflection and innovation as we began to recover from the pandemic. From financial hardships to mental health to inequities, all critical social issues in our community became amplified. However, during the midst of this tumultuous time, our Y’s commitment to its mission and its ability to evolve and address the critical needs of our communities remained.

As a community, we saw an increase in needs and more complex challenges than ever before. And yet, through the ebb and flow of these adversarial circumstances, our Y was able to continue to ensure YMCA programs and services were available to ALL. This was possible because of supporters like you.

None of our successes at the Y or in our community would have been achievable without our donors, volunteers, staff and partners. And with great appreciation and gratitude, we would like to sincerely thank each of you for reducing barriers, giving hope for tomorrow and believing that together we really can make a difference.

The investments made to support YMCA of Southwest Florida connects people to a greater sense of purpose and to each other to make our community stronger. Your extraordinary sacrifices have positioned the Y for long-term sustainability and advancement of our cause. Because of you, our Y will strengthen communities for generations to come. Yours in service,

YMCA IN ACTION:

William began YREADS! in the spring after struggling with reading. His classroom teacher alerted his parents that on William’s current trajectory, he would most likely be repeating 1st grade.

“I don’t know what we would have done without YREADS!”

After two months of YREADS!, William’s classroom teacher had a conference with William’s parents again. William had improved in reading so much as a result of YREADS! that he would not only be advancing to 2nd grade, but he would also be advancing to a higher-level reading group in the next school year. William has continued with YREADS! this year and is now helping his younger brother read at home. “I don’t know what we would have done without YREADS!,” William’s mom said. “It’s an amazing program and now we also have so many books at home!”

YMCA IN ACTION:

As a cancer survivor, the mental anguish is as taxing as the physical challenges. I was able to enroll in the LIVEStrong program at the Y and gained strength and comradery. My instructor is compassionate and understanding, but at the same time, she pushes you in just the right way, encouraging you to do more.

“I knew you would rock it!”

I expressed to my instructor that I would like to train to walk a breast cancer 5K which I felt was unattainable in my physical fitness level. She did not even blink; she immediately assisted me with a plan and coached me all along the way. On the day I completed the race, she was the first person I sent a text to, reporting that I finished the entire 5K. Her response was, “I knew you would rock it!” She never doubted me and I am learning to also not doubt myself.

ADVANCING OUR MISSION

YMCA of Southwest Florida believes fundamentally, strong communities are equitable communities. Our Y is committed to ensuring everyone can access the support they need, whether by offering financial aid to access programs within our facilities or by providing services outside our four walls at wellness facilities, schools and other places in the community. Our Y is dedicated to eliminating barriers that prevent people from participating in YMCA programs and services by paving the critical path to advancing equity and building bridges across society’s most pressing social divides.

14

YMCA IN ACTION:

In April 2021, the Board of Directors and all Community Boards across our association came together and identified the gaps in services and needs in our community. The following core areas of focus were identified, Youth Mental Health, Youth & Teen Leadership Programs, Health & Wellness Programs and Hispanic Outreach.

“...identified the gaps in services and needs in our community.”

From this collaborative effort, an Association Social Impact Committee was developed. The committee is composed of professionals with high-level expertise in the identified areas of focus. The Social Impact Committee will aim its efforts on the core areas of focus and how the Y can continue to expand its services as YMCA of Southwest Florida addresses its Equitable Community Initiatives.
