2020 YMCA of Delaware Impact Report

Dear Friends, It is with an incredible sense of pride and gratitude that we reflect on the past year at the YMCA of Delaware. The year 2020 was like no other – one that brought unimaginable challenges and frightening realities. With the support of donors, partners, and staff, we were there for those who needed us most at a critical time. In the toughest year on record, faced with the dual public health crises of COVID-19 and social injustices, we locked arms with our community and pressed forward with optimism and hope to meet the ever-shifting needs of youth, families, and everyone in our communities.

Despite shutting down our buildings and finding ourselves in uncharted territory, our teams charged toward the front lines and took action. We opened our facilities to provide childcare for emergency workers and essential personnel, partnered with the Food Bank of Delaware to ensure no one went hungry, connected with senior community members, founded an Equity Team dedicated to creating an anti-racist culture at the Y, launched virtual group exercise classes free to the community so everyone could remain active, offered online family activities, helped students and families in virtual classrooms, provided summer camp to thousands of children, and much more.

Like so many other organizations, communities, and individuals, we fully felt the impact of the pandemic. Responding quickly, we pivoted to serve our community and kept our organization afloat. Despite the enormous challenges, we rallied and thrived. Our ability to persevere in the face of the unimaginable is built on a strong foundation and is propelled by the energy, compassion, and determination of Y members, donors, staff, volunteers, partners, and elected officials who have supported us and have refused to give up.

In 2020, the world changed forever, and the Y was ready to respond.

We are forever grateful and humbled by the support of everyone who has helped us rise to build a more compassionate, caring, and strong community. Together, we are Y strong.

STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY With a mission of empowering youth, fostering healthy living, and promoting strong communities, the YMCA of Delaware serves over 100,000 people annually- delivering lasting personal and social change.

The year 2020 came with unimaginable challenges, but together, we rose to meet the most critical needs of our youth, families, and communities. Despite our facilities shutting down for nearly three months, staff worked around the clock to offer needed programs and services including childcare for emergency workers and essential personnel, hunger relief for those in need, and online health and fitness offerings by launching our Virtual Y free to the community. In the wake of social unrest, we committed to being a positive force in the movement for social change and equity for all. We are thankful to everyone who was a part of this acceleration of service to the community.

COMMITTING TO SOCIAL CHANGE COMBATING HUNGER Dedicated to ensuring community members had access to nourishing food, the Y provided more than 280,000 FREE meals to individuals and families in need in 2020.

In an unsettled world full of isolation and social injustice, there is much work still to be done- and the Y is needed more than ever. As an organization focused on the most critical needs of our community and dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for all, the Y is addressing how to undo racism at an individual, organizational, and societal level. In 2020, we launched the YMCA Equity Team and committed to creating an anti-racist culture at the Y.

PREVENTING SUMMER LEARNING LOSS With all new health and safety protocols, Y summer camps opened their doors, providing more than 1,500 children with the opportunity to be active, screen-free, connect with friends and thrive. More than $375,000 in financial assistance was provided to more than 650 campers, ensuring they were able to experience the magic of camp.

CREATING WELCOMING SPACES At the YMCA of Delaware, we know that we are stronger when everyone feels welcomed and we can all work together for the common good. We strive to create a welcoming, safe space for all and celebrate the cultures of our members, staff, and communities. Each September, the YMCA of Delaware joins hundreds of YMCAs nationwide in hosting activities to celebrate immigrants’ contributions to communities and bring together all residents in a spirit of unity.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES When the world was closing its doors and the community needed our support, the Y responded, opening our facilities to provide emergency child care to more than 700 children of first responders and essential workers. As schools reopened virtually, we pivoted to offer Learning Support Centers, ensuring more than 450 students had a safe, supportive space to learn.

BUILDING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES As our facilities closed, we launched the Virtual Y, providing online family activities and hundreds of on-demand and live workouts to the community for free. While our facilities were shut down, nearly 10,000 people visited the Virtual Y website and thousands took advantage of more than 50 Facebook Live exercise classes per week. After we reopened in June, we continued offering the Virtual Y to the community for free, ensuring everyone had access to stay active and healthy.

Additionally, more than 600 individuals participated in Y programs designed to prevent diabetes, manage weight loss, and support cancer survivors.

DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS Through various YMCA of Delaware youth programs including Black Achievers, Youth in Government, Youth Workforce Development Program, Teen Leaders Club, Back on Track, Counselors in Training, camp and summer leadership programs, over 6,500 youth were empowered to strive for greatness in 2020.
