A message from Gerry Beauchamp Ipswich Family YMCA Executive Director Twenty years ago, a group of Y volunteers dreamed of a full-facility Ipswich Family YMCA. None of us knew whether that dream was possible. More importantly, few thought the community could raise the full funds needed to build it. At that time, a plan was conceived for a minimalist Y with an idea toward future expansion.

Today, it is time to further the dream.

Our current Y facility has served us well, however it is severely limited, having surpassed original membership projections with more than 5,000 Y members. The incredible response to our Y has created a level of demand for programs, pool time and health/ wellness space that now ​exceeds our capacity.

We have an opportunity to do so much more by adding to the quality of life in our community for youth and adults of all ages, regardless of ability to pay. ​When a business or an organization reaches 100% capacity, the only logical response is to increase capacity. Our community has made it clear that it believes in our mission and the need for our services.​Now we have a chance to do even more for the community through this needed expansion.

Our Community Needs The current Ipswich Family YMCA facility does not meet the needs of our growing membership.

Essential programs and services needed by our communities are hindered by lack of space and amenities. A phase II capital campaign allows the Y to address these vital needs:

Outdoor Water & Camp Fun

Giving families and Y campers a place to bond and play during the summer with refreshing outdoor aquatic amenities, for all to enjoy, regardless of ability to pay

Child Safety

Giving children and adults separate locker rooms for privacy when changing

Teens

Giving teens a space and place to call their own with programs that engage them after school

Aging Adults & Individuals with Disabilities

Enhancing facility amenities that give aging adults and those with mobility issues easier access to aquatic therapies

Education

Engaging more youth and teens in education-based, afterschool programs with added multi-purpose rooms

Getting Greener

Creating a greener, more energy-efficient Y for the future with new technologies and sustaining systems

The greater Ipswich communities need SO MUCH MORE from our YMCA. A capital campaign to address our communities’ needs will deliver a YMCA that is welcoming, vibrant and accessible for all ages and all socio-economic backgrounds.

Scope Of Work •

Kids and families will enjoy a seasonal Outdoor Aquatic Center with splashground, and fun and fitness pool... with dedicated family time and also gives campers refreshing water during the hot summer days

Older adults will benefit from enhanced features that bring ease of use and therapeutic features including zero depth entry in the Outdoor Pool and a therapeutic spa in the indoor pool

New Multi-Purpose/Education Classrooms will meet the demands of afterschool child care, arts, and expanded healthy living initiatives

•

For safety and convenience... dedicated Youth Locker Rooms with expanded lockers and dedicated Adult Locker Rooms with saunas and expanded lockers

Providing a place to gather and socialize, the new Indoor & Outdoor Y Cafés will bring together friends old and new

AT A GLANCE

Y Impact: A Single Dad’s Crisis Being a single father for five children was hard enough; when Doug slipped and fell on the ice it was too much. Now immobile with a surgically repaired leg, he needed help.

The pool at the YMCA was a real life saver.

In the water, he learned to walk again.

When the Y ladies invited him to join aqua aerobics, he jokingly agreed to attend. A few months later, and he can’t imagine missing a class. With a current weight loss of over 100 pounds, he is back on his feet taking care of his kids...and has new back up babysitters!

The Need

Our communities need more accessible water for all ages...

Campers Need Water for Summer Camp Relief More than 150 campers each day attend Y camp at the Ipswich Family YMCA. Our current camp facilities do not include an outdoor pool, leaving campers hot, and sun-soaked. Very limited indoor pool time can be given without member disruption, and efforts for temporary sprinklers and slip and slides can only achieve limited relief from the heat. Campers of all ages need aquatic amenities that bring refreshing relief and a quality camp experience.

All Kids & Families Need Outdoor Fun Ipswich and many surrounding communities have no outdoor pool amenities that are accessible for all. With current Y swimmers filling our indoor pool, additional aquatic space is needed for teaching more children to swim, additional dedicated lap lanes for exercise, and expanded water fitness classes for kids and adults. Our Y’s current indoor pool cannot accommodate additional and innovative programs because of limited pool time and space.

Families need a place to bond together. They need that special time where parents and children alike can “do their own thing”, but together spend time making memories.

The Need

Our kids need a place to belong and learn...

Teens Need a Home Being a teen today isn’t easy. Our young people struggle to find a place they can call their own as they navigate school, friends and their changing life views. Sadly, at this age, kids become aware of drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviors. What they need is a safe place that welcomes them with open arms where adult mentors can help guide their way.

Youth Need Continued Learning Today, more and more children are in need of academic support. Y afterschool programs help reduce the gap in learning with programs that reinforce learning that takes place in school, just in a hands-on way. The Y needs to help support these children on their path to academic success.

The Solution: (2) New Flexible Program Rooms

A new Youth Center can provide our teens with a space and place during nights and weekends to call their own with programs that build their spirit, mind and body.

A new flexible classroom space will give our kids the chance to experience Y afterschool programs that enhance their learning.

YOUTH & TEENS

Y Impact: Jason’s Place There didn’t seem to be a place where Jason fit in. School was hard enough, but now there was the chaos of a broken family at home.

When a friend invited him to the Y on the Fit Crew bus, he figured he had nothing better to do. Soon, he was going to the Y every day and he loved to swim in the pool.

One day, a Y lifeguard asked Jason to assist with swim lessons for a child needing extra attention. At first he was worried that he didn’t have enough to offer, but the child’s struggles reminded him of his own. Now Jason is a perfect fit at the Y every afternoon, teaching kids the lifelong skill of swimming.

GETTING GREENER Being responsible stewards for the Y and our communities...

Energy Conservation We teach our children to protect our resources and conserve energy for generations to come. As we build enhancements for our Y community, we must be energyconscious with a design that meets those same goals while providing amenities that meet our communities’ needs.

Rooftop solar panels will bring energyefficient power to our Y’s operation.

Innovative technologies and variable speed pumps will ensure water conservation with a water recycling system.

Locker room amenities will include many energy-efficient features.

The Solution: Energy-Efficient Enhancements

Y Impact: An Olympic Effort He was an Olympic swimmer, the proud owner and earner of three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal at the 1948 London Olympics. That was more than 65 years ago.

Recently, Jim returned to his YMCA swimming roots to stay active and in shape, but today he needs two canes to assist him in the Y. He swims three times per week and navigates the locker room and pool the best he can as he continues his passion for aquatics.​

The Need

Youth need dedicated space for privacy and safety...

With half of our 5,000 Y members under the age of 18, our Y’s male and female locker rooms are over-crowded with a shortage of lockers and changing space.

For many reasons, our children also need dedicated changing space. Separating adults and kids will increase privacy and safety for all.

The Solution: Dedicated Youth Locker Rooms

Current male and female locker rooms will be converted into boys and girls locker rooms, giving more shower and changing facilities for youth.

A reconfiguration of each locker room will allow for additional lockers to meet the needs of our growing youth members.

OLDER ADULTS The Need

Adults will have greater needs as boomers grow older...

By 2030, the number of U.S. adults age 65 or older will more than double. Our Y must serve the growing number of older adults and meet the critical needs of our boomers. Research has shown that older adults who practice healthy behaviors take advantage of clinical preventive services, and continue to engage with family and friends are more likely to remain healthy, live independently, and incur fewer health-related costs.

Our Y needs to change and evolve in order to accommodate innovative older adult programs, therapeutic features, and physical access to aquatic offerings.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center will be constructed with zero depth entry access and other special amenities. The indoor pool will have a therapeutic spa added to the pool deck for adult use.

New adult locker rooms will meet the needs of our seniors with a sauna and larger changing areas.

The Need

Our community needs a place where all are welcome to belong, gather and connect...

People are finding fewer places where they belong in today’s world. As electronics and technologies widen our world view, it also creates isolation where social interaction and connectedness diminish. Our communities need a place where all people can come together and where all are welcome. Everyone deserves the chance to belong to something, no matter their age, background or income.

More than 5,000 people find that sense of belonging at the Y. It’s where neighbors connect, friendships are formed and communities are strengthened.

Our communities need the Y to DO MORE for MORE people.

The Solution: More space for people to connect

Enhancements to the Y lobby will create a café-feel for members to gather and connect.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center will provide space for families - young and old - to find a sense of community.

COMMUNITY

Y Impact: Friends Reconnect Katie and Sarah met in middle school and became great friends. However, life got in the way and they lost touch after high school. Fifteen years later, they reconnected at the Ipswich Family Y. Sarah lives in Y affordable housing with her husband and children and Katie’s family are avid members of the Y, too. Their families meet regularly at the Y, play together, and share a special bond.

These ladies say they are blessed to have reconnected and truly feel the Y is more than a gym... it’s a community.

Cash/Checks An outright gift with cash/check can be made to the Ipswich Family YMCA. Pledges Pledge payments may be made for a pledge period of up to five years. Multi-year pledges allow donors to consider a larger gift than would be possible in any one year.

Securities A gift of stock can be donated electronically. Further information and instructions would be provided for the transfer of stock.

Matching Gifts Many corporations will match employee cash gifts. Usually the human resource office can provide the necessary information and matching gift forms.

Life Income Gifts Planned gifts represent a special type of support that benefits you, the donor, and the YMCA. Often, a planned gift allows you to maximize your contribution and provides you with specific income and tax advantages. The YMCA can provide information if you are considering a planned gift.

Bequests A bequest in one’s will or through an IRA designation is another way to contribute
