SELREC seeks to build a sense of community from among a diverse population based on common interests, values and the social and recreational needs.

The variety of activities offered is in response to the interests of our community. Good health, friendships and opportunities for sharing family time are all endless benefits of recreation.

Hillcrest Family YMCA Policies Eligibility

Liability

Registration is open to anyone for most of our programs. Some programs are limited to members of the Hillcrest Family YMCA as well as Program Members. All others are considered non-members.

We do register on a first come-first served basis regardless of residency, unless otherwise noted under the actual program. You are encouraged to register early as many programs have a limit and can fill quickly.

We do not provide insurance for program participants. You must be aware that participation in activities can sometimes result in injuries, understand the risks to these activities, and make no claim or demand against the YMCA, SELREC, the City of South Euclid, the City of Lyndhurst, and/ or the SE-L Board of Ed or their agents and employees in the event of an accidental occurrence.

Attendance Policy

Children are not allowed to attend adult classes.

Also, unregistered siblings are not permitted to attend youth or teen classes. High school students may register for most adult classes provided they are held in the SE-L school district locations.

Your inability to attend a class because of a change in personal circumstances does not warrant a refund. YMCA Program credits will be issued only for extended illness and/or injury documented and signed by a physician. Credits will not include the cost of any materials and/or supplies purchased for students by the instructor for their class.

Fees/Payment

Registration fees for all listed programs are payable through the Hillcrest Family YMCA and must be paid in full prior to the first scheduled class. Our instructors cannot and will not accept registration forms and/or fees at the program site. Early registration and payment is critical for the viability of these classes and for assurance of your spot in the class or program. We reserve the right to accept or deny registrations if they are received late. You may pay by cash, personal check, money order, Visa, Master Card or Discover for any program. If you charge programs by phone, you acknowledge that you have read and fully understand the refund policy. Please have your credit card number, expiration date and security code handy when you are registering.

Returned Check Policy (NSF)

In accordance with the rules established by the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA), we have chosen to utilize electronic collection of checks returned for insufficient funds (NSF). Such checks will be submitted electronically through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network for redeposit and the check writer’s account will be debited for both the face amount of the check and a returned check fee!

Confirmation/Cancellation

We do not mail confirmations for class enrollments. We will make every attempt to notify you in advance if a class is cancelled, changed, or if your registration is received after a class is already full. If enrollment is insufficient for any particular class, the class will be cancelled and fees will be refunded in full within 4 to 6 weeks after cancellation. We do reserve the right to cancel, combine or divide classes, to change time, day, date, or place of meeting, to change the instructor assignments, and to make revisions in these offerings.

We will contact you of any changes so it is very important that you supply us with at least two contact phone numbers as well as a current working email address.

Non-endorsement Policy

Instructors are contracted or hired because they have a special skill or talent which they are willing to share with our communities. Please note however, we do not endorse the opinions or business affiliations of our instructors/independent contractors.

Adults ages 60 and over may pay the senior fee when noted. All other classes which do not list a separate senior fee are available at the full fee.

When the SE-L City Schools are not in session or are dismissed early due to inclement weather, all daytime, afternoon, and/or evening classes being held in any SE-L buildings will not be held, regardless of weather changes. Classes missed due to bad weather or other “acts of God” will be added on to the end of the session whenever possible.

We, however, reserve the right to terminate any class with fewer than the scheduled number of meetings, without issuing a refund or a credit if we cannot add it on at the end of the session.

Programs held in other school districts or at the Hillcrest Family YMCA (i.e. Mayfield, Shaker Hts., or Beachwood) follow their respective building and/or school closing schedules. Feel free to call the Hillcrest Family YMCA after 4:30pm for class cancellations. The following Departments may also be contacted for their class cancellations.

AQUATICS The Hillcrest Family YMCA offers children and adults the opportunity to experience the many wonders of water.

Y Swim Lessons focus on teaching participants the lifelong benefits of swimming through the main program components of stroke development, personal safety, personal growth, rescue and water games.

Water fitness programs focus on the enhancement of physical fitness through movements that increase strength and endurance without putting stress or strain on the joints.

The following aquatics programs will be held at the Hillcrest Family YMCA, taught by YMCA Staff. You do not have to be a YMCA Member to participate however there is a price break if you are a Program Member. You can become a Program Member for $25 annually.

This level is for children who can jump into a pool and float without assistance.

For students who can float with some support, enter and exit the pool w/o assistance, and who can work on putting their faces in the water.

The Hillcrest Family YMCA Swim Team is co-ed, for anyone 6-18 years of age, who has achieved guppy level or above, who likes to swim, and who wants to have fun participating in a team sport.

Practices are held three nights during the week. Attendance is mandatory for at least ONE of those nights to practice.

The League meets are held on Saturdays and there will be several optional swim meets throughout the season. For more information regarding the swim team as well as fees, contact Chris Tamasovich, Aquatics Director at the Hillcrest Family YMCA at (216) 382-4300.

Teen & Adult Swimming (Ages 13+) Swim lesson programs will be held at the Hillcrest Family YMCA, taught by YMCA Certified Staff. Please indicate days and times when registering.

Aquatics Aqua Aerobics (Adults)

Exercise in the pool using water resistance to enhance strength, flexibility, muscle tone, and endurance for a full body workout. Try the deep water for a zero-impact experience! No swimming ability is required.

Aquajog (Adults)

Grab a buoyancy belt and meet us in the pool for a zero impact jog to help increase your cardiovascular system health. No swimming ability is required.

Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program: “Twinges in the Hinges” (Adults)

This program is designed for active older adults to enhance muscle development and joint movement, as well as provide a fun and effective way to exercise. Swimming skills are not required.

This is a brand new program for the Fall at the Beachwood High School Indoor Pool. Diving lessons will be 50 minutes long each week for 6 weeks. Participants must have passed advanced level 5 or better in Beachwood’s swim lessons in order to register. Dates are subject to change based on the swim meet schedule for the High School.

You will be notified of cancellations and every opportunity will be offered to make up missed classes.

Synchronized Swim (Ages 12+)

Synchronized swimming (often called Synchro) is a hybrid form of swimming, dance and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers (either solos, duets, trios, combos, or teams) performing a synchronized routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music.

Synchronized swimming demands advanced water skills, and requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, and precise timing, as well as exceptional breath control when upside down underwater. The requirement for this program is that you have the ability to swim 25 freestyle.

(Ages 4 and Up) The following swim lessons are held at the Beachwood High School Indoor Pool. Levels 1-3 are 30 minutes long, levels 4-6 and Adults are 45 minutes long. Level 1 is for beginners with little or no experience in the water. Swimmers must prove competency from previous levels to move up to the next level. Please indicate level and time preferred when registering. Dates are subject to change based on the swim meet schedule for the High School.

Receive certified instruction in First Aid and/or CPR in this class. Learn what to do when you encounter someone with sudden illness, soft tissue injury, heat and cold related injuries. Lifeguard Training (Ages 15+)

Lifeguarding class certifies students in Lifesaving, CPR-Pro and First-Aid. All students must pass a pre-course test on the first day of class to be admitted and must be 15 years of age by the last day of the class. Students must pass a written test with 80% correct per section and a water test with 100% proficiency.

Each class time consists of water and class work. Attendance is mandatory at all classes. Pre-registration is required! Fee includes all supplies and certification. Here are the lifeguarding pre-course skill requirements in order to take the class: (1) Be able to swim continuously for 300 yards, which is 12 laps in our pool; (2) complete a 25 yard swim and brick retrieval; (3) Be able to tread water for 2-minutes. Create silver jewelry using Precious Metal Clay (PMC), a relatively new approach to jewelry making. Microscopic particles of fine silver are suspended in an organic binder with water, making a pliable, clay-like material which can be formed into jewelry. Fitness Assessments A Fitness Assessment gives participants a base line regarding their current physical condition. Areas assessed include heart rate, blood pressure, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Retesting is recommended every 12 weeks to help you see your progress.

Youth & Teen Wellness Coaching Youth and teens must complete a wellness coaching session and have a parent/guardian sign a waiver before using any equipment. Teens will learn basic technique and ďŹ tness center etiquette. For specific individual needs, please contact the Wellness Team.

Basketball League (Grades 1-9)

Kids will play a fun but competitive schedule loaded with extras; playoffs, All Star game with DJ announcers, exhibition games at Brush High School, and more.

Participants in these leagues will have a practice one evening during the week at a South Euclid-Lyndhurst school location. A player-evaluation and draft will be held in late November with practices beginning in December. Games will be held on Saturdays at Brush High School or Memorial Jr. High, between 9am and 2pm and will be determined once we see how many teams are formed. The league will have a maximum of 24 teams with 4 divisions, boys and girls grades 1-9.

This league is a competitive, clean league using certified officials with participants being 18 and over. With blades moving at speeds so great electronic scoring devices are necessary, fencing is considered one of the easiest and safest fighting sports to learn. PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT On the last Friday of each month, you can bring Your kids to the Hillcrest Family YMCA for an evening of FUN! Plus it’s a chance for Moms and Dads to have a “Night Out.” Food/Drinks, Basketball, Dodgeball, Swimming, and other fun activities and games are planned from 6-9:45 p.m. Bring a bathing suit and towel for your child(ren).

University Heights Recreational Partnership The recreational partnership between SELREC and the City of University Heights allows all University Heights residents to register for any SELREC classes, camps and programs at the South Euclid-Lyndhurst resident rate. The City of University Heights will then reimburse SELREC for the difference between the resident and non-resident fees. The South Euclid-Lyndhurst Recreation brochure is published each fall/winter and spring/summer. The brochure is mailed to all households in the Greater South Euclid-Lyndhurst School District, households in University Heights, and to others by request.
