YMCA Bitola

Opening words This is the best time of the year, when we would like to bring a moment to your attention to all of you who were with us throughout the year and interested of the impact that YMCA Bitola has in our community. Bellow we share the highlights of the year 2015. In 2015 we have continued our work in the key programs offering learning possibilities within the non-formal education through: volunteer service, trainings, camps, children rights, arts & culture and healthy lifestyle programs. Again we managed to increase our outreach of directly targeted beneficiaries in 2015 which is а great success! But the best and most important three things that happened throughout the year were: On the 10th anniversary of Young Men’s Leadership Project (YMLP) camp we have come at the end of one phase end entered in more advanced level of organization of the camp. We are so enthusiastic about this!

5

OPENING WORDS

We have agreement for implementation of the Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) camp, Đ° camp which has been existing since 2002. That will provide a whole new perspective of the things related to camps development at our YMCA, but also in Macedonia as country having in mind that GLOW and YMLP are top superb leadership camps on national level in Macedonia.

OPENING WORDS

overall personal development of the people involved. WE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE to all our volunteers, donors, sponsors and community members for their commitment to help enhance YMCA Bitola in implementing its mission.

We have started cooperation with corporate social responsible companies for the GLOW and YMLP programs. Thus far, both GLOW and YMLP have relied heavily on grants from the US Embassy. For both of these programs to become sustainable, the necessary support must come from Macedonia’s own companies. We have offered corporate representatives the opportunity to: 1) demonstrate their corporate social responsibility; 2) build good image for their company and the products and services they provide; and 3) create a legacy in developing the future leaders of Macedonia, by being a camp sponsor. YMCA Bitola continues to be recognized as a confident and serious organization and solid partner for collaboration. YMCA Bitola work is driven by the commitment and enthusiasm of many incredible volunteers. We believe that volunteering helps to foster a culture of participation, increase the responsibility and contributes to the

12 Volunteering is the best way to gain experience, learn new skills, build own resume, personal and professional development, travel and helping our community at the same time. YMCA Bitola encourages young people to get involved and volunteer in our activities. They can be part of the No Hate Team or the Macedonian Model of United Nations (MMUN) project, art and culture, participating and supporting of the civic iniciative Bitola on Bike or you can be part of many exhibitions and excursions or other social events organized for fun.

Voluntary Service

YMCA Bitola also offers opportunities for international voluntering service through volunteering in Europe with covered costs! That can be realized through the European Voluntary Service program. The EVS program offers the volunteer an opportunity to work on a project in non-profit organization in a European country and thus to gain an unforgettable international experience. The volunteer chooses in which country and on what project to volunteer, and the costs are covered! GET INVOLVED AND TAKE YOUR FUTURE IN YOUR HANDS! Numbers Throughout 2015 in various activities we have engaged 41 short-term volunteers and 11 long term EVS volunteers (sending and hosting) and PCV international volunteers. We have organized volunteer activities involving 439 young people.

PEACE CORPS CONFERENCE – EACH OF US CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE „As a friend of mine once said: “If you don’t read or learn something new or you don’t meet a new person, you are not growing, you are stagnating”. In this sense, I would encourage you all to go into the world and aim to learn a new thing every single day. Leave the comfortable zone of the friends you already know and go and meet somebody new because different perspectives from different people will open a whole new world and opportunities for you.“ Cindy Sorensen

MY AWESOME EVS EXPERIENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS „To be a part of this amazing experience called EVS was the best thing that ever happened to me. Two months in The Netherlands (the country I was not even considering to see in my life) turned out to be the best summer ever! Living in a camp side near Ommen and driving a bicycle was perfect, exploring the beautiful outdoors of The Netherlands every single day was mind blowing. Even driving a bike in the rain was awesome! The host organization made it even greater, by throwing us surprises and different games.“ Boris Bogdanovski

EVS STORY – I RAISED MY AWARENESS FOR THE IMPORTANCE OF VOLUNTEER SPIRIT! „I’m much sure that 100% of my expectations were fulfilled. This EVS raise up my awareness about European philosophy, the meaning of European union and advantaged being in it. I understand how Europe is uniting many different countries together and in same time respect every single one of them, their cultures and differences. This mobility and volunteering spirit, youth participation and active citizenship that this program promotes lead young people on the good, on the right way in life therefore I suggest all young people to take a part and try the EVS!“ Vele Georgiev

EVS SHOWED ME HOW TO LIVE AND WORK IN ANOTHER WAY „When you are motivated by your impact and not by the money you make, you don’t keep track of your work hours, it is a genuine pleasure to “work”. I still don’t know how my life is going to be, but I know I wasn’t born to work long hours only to pay bills. I know now that it is possible, to live and work in another way.“ Caroline Dujardin

18 Training is a process of learning. It involves the application of acquired knowledge aiming at better performance of young people, while development involves not only the related process of developing, but, also helps young people in building up their personalities at the same time as improving their progress towards the actualization of their full potentials. Through different kinds of personal and professional development trainings in our country and abroad, we enable our young people to gain the necessary knowledge and skills and to grow as people with developed character so they can better answer to the now day needs ! We provide our members with information for available trainings. Most of these events are part of the ERASMUS+ program, and all the costs are covered. For more information about available trainings check the Training calendar. LEAVE THE DAILY MONOTONY AND USE THE

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND YOUR OWN ABILITIES „It is unbelievable how much “Event Wise”, 7 days training for personal and social development that was held in Omen, The Netherlands, helped me understand myself better. In 7 days I learnd more about my self than my whole life. I identified my feelings and thoughts. I realized my choices and opportunities. I was able to observe reactions in myself and in others in certain situations. What was I doing wrong until now. What couldn’t I see in myself. What didn’t I believe.“ Svetlana Petkovska

VOLUNTEER TODAY – EMPLOYEE TOMORROW! „The friendly attitude between us was the best characteristic of this seminar. Those faces, those qualities, that commitment, that is what matters. We all work together for a better tomorrow, and how will that be possible if not through sharing what we’ve learned at the seminar? Volunteering is the real way of finding one’s own profession and work engagement. Today we are all home, but tomorrow we will all get out to show the world what youth can do. And for that, I thank this new experience.“ Aleksandra Andonovska

NEVER STOP FEEDING YOUR CURIOSITY „We have full heads of memories and hearts filled with emotions. We have found the answers of some of our questions and we found many unanswered questions that will be our motivation to continue to search. Human curiosity can never be satisfied and there always be things that we do not know. It is up to us if we want to learn and we will learn if we ask, and if we learn how to listen. At the end I want to thank the hosts Foundation Olde Vechte and Youth Association YMCA Bitola for the given opportunity that left a lasting mark on our lives. Thank you!“ Aleksandra Cingaroska

UNEXPECTED CONNECTIONS, UNEXPECTED RESULTS „Don’t miss an opportunity to connect with other people, other cultures and to learn (throughout) other learning methods. YMCA and youth exchanges are your path to personal growth and adventures. So take a step: Where will you go?“ Cindy Sorensen

IMPROVING QUALITY OF YOUTH EXCHANGES „The most important thing that I learned was that we must involve young people in all the phases of the youth exchange. We all, as youth workers should explore what are their needs, to support them to brainstorm their suggestions and ideas about the theme of the youth exchange, and about the activities. I, as a youth worker, want to improve my skill to not always take initiatives, but to let young people learn to act when action is needed, and let them make mistakes. Because from my own experience I can say that the best way I learned was through the method “learning by doing”. “ Svetlana Petkovska PUTTING IDEAS INTO PRACTICE – ERASMUS+ TRAINING „Almost everyone who has once participated in a project in Ommen, eventually goes back there again. Maybe it is not the most exotic place in the world, but what you can learn there, I think is something that is more valuable. As a participant, once again I was able to witness the good organization and the realization of projects which are taking place in Olde Vechte. Every time I go there, I feel richer by one more wonderful experience in my life.“ Aleksandra Cingarovska „It was a great training, at a beautiful location, where I met a lot of new and wonderful people and learned a lot of things about the whole process of writing, organizing and implementing Erasmus+ projects. The overall theme of the project was to get us introduced to the Erasmus+ program for education, training, youth and sport and learn how to design and carry out projects and apply for funding.“ Slavica Petkovska

25

26 The program is based on a combination of non-formal and outdoor education which for longer period is a trend in more developed countries. From the very beginnings we joined in development of the Balkan camp that was a platform for training of Balkan YMCA’s camp leaders. Since then our members take part in more camps and other camp events (filled with learning, outdoor activities, entertainment and socializing) organized by YMCA Bitola or by some of our partner organizations. In the recent years we have been active in the working group for camps of YMCA Europe and the non formal networks International Synergy Group and Outdoor as a Tool Network which resulted with cooperation with many camp providers organizations.

Camps

Young Men’s Leadership Project (YMLP) and Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) are the main camp programs that we are focused at the moment. YMLP is a camp for boys that has been organized since 2006, and GLOW is a camp for girls that has been organized since 2002. The purpose of these camps is personal and professional development in a safe environment where young people from different ethnic, religious and social background will learn and develop jointly. TAKE THE CHALLENGE AND BUILD YOUR LEADERSHIP ATTITUDE! Numbers Throughout 2015 we had 4 amazing events YMLP (Young Men’s Leadership Project), GLOW (Girls leading Our World), Empowering Summer Camp Youth leaders in Netherlands and Working Camp (Macedonia, France, Germany) engaging 459 people.

YMLP - THE BEST SUMMER EXPERIENCE „When someone asks me, “How did your summer go?” my first thought is of YMLP (Young Men’s Leadership Project) camp. My first impression of this awesome summer camp is of the lovely and polite Peace Corps Volunteers who worked so hard to make this camp more awesome each and every year. As a Junior Counselor at YMLP this year, I brought two more campers from my community. They were excited to participate. I’ll just mention here that last year as a camper, I was the only one from my town, and it was challenging for me to participate with so many intelligent, young and empowered high school students who were there for the same reason as me, to socialize and have fun. The skills and experience I gained from last year at camp helped me to lead, inspire and guide first time campers who wanted to have a great camp experience.“ Logan Monday & Risto Kovacev

SUMMER WORK CAMP IN BITOLA I think this project has enormous potential and has already shown great results. Unlike similar projects, the truly impact activities were performed during the program duration, like the renovation of the school. The language animations have inspired me to learn German in preparation of the next stage and I have met many people who share my passion for volunteering. Marija Naumovska SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUTH LEADERS, YMCA THE NETHERLANDS The camp was fun, exciting and filled with ideas by everyone that participated. Also a lot of classes, games and presentations help us to understand the concept of organizing a camp. The important part of it is how to make great camp leaders, including coaching, personal behavior, building connections, first aid. A Peace Corps member in our team, Cindy Sorensen held a few presentations in which she give contribution about organizing a camp, the purpose of a camp and the profile of campers. In this way the other YMCA teams have a chance to learn more about the camps that are organized in Macedonia. Through the teambuilding games I got socialized with the other members of the other YMCAs and it was a great opportunity for me to talk to such wonderful people. Every night we got our relations stronger by playing a game called “The wolves of Wekkerdam. That was one of the greatest experience I had so far on international camp. Gjorgi Trajkovski

32 Children have to be aware of their rights and responsibilities from their early age and that is why YMCA cooperates with primary and secondary schools in our project activities. The main objective is strengthening the youth participation at all levels of decision-making on issues that directly affect them. The methods of our activities are through support of school pupil’s organizations at their formation, their capacity building, school activism, introducing of the model of Child Ombudsman in schools, introducing the Index of Children Rights, advocacy for the pupil’s organizations, activities for integration of children from different ethnic and social backgrounds, etc. We cooperate with several institutions, and our strategic partner in this field is the Coalition of Youth Organizations SEGA. WE BUILD STRONG CHILDREN, STRONG COMMUNITIES!

Children Rights

Numbers In 2015, the Project Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Macedonia entered the fourth year of implementation covering a total of 941 youth in various activities. This year YMCA Bitola participated in the project Macedonian Model of United Nations (MMUN) with its own team that successfully performed at the final conference.

LEARNING AND WORKING WITH “HEAD, HEART AND HANDS” YOUTH EXCHANGE „If I had the chance of turning back time, I would turn back precisely those days. The stay in Switzerland for me was an incredible and unforgettable experience. Firstly, because I felt like I was in a perfect world filled with greenery, peace and quiet. Secondly, because I enlarged my circle of friendships and I gained true friends. We all learned to leave together, what is team work and how to appreciate other’s thoughts. And thirdly, because through the fun trainings not only I gained a priceless knowledge and skills, but in a way, my eyes were opened and my heart as well. I was given the motivation and hope which I see in us, the youth.“ Ivana Todorovska MACEDONIAN MODEL UNITED NATIONS (MMUN) 2014/2015 „Macedonian Model United Nations (MMUN) is an academic simulation for high school and college students. I sincerely recommend it to all who want to acquire several different skills simultaneously or to be upgraded in the field of debate and public speaking to apply for Model United Nations. Whether you sign up to participate in the advanced or general level preparatory process, cooperation with the US Peace Corps, active participation during the preparatory period and the conference are really wonderful and enriching experience.“ Marija Dimovska

36 Creativity is a part of the everyday life of YMCA Bitola. Expressed through art and culture, it emphasizes its importance. The various activities such as: recording and documenting the activities and other major events through the I-Film program, organizing comic exhibitions, as well as visual expression of various events in the form of a comic art through the I-Comic program contributes YMCA Bitola to be an organization attractive for every volunteer. For those who like performances with fire, silk and lighting elements, the group of young enthusiasts Acid Triple will not leave them indifferent. BE CREATIVE AND ACTIVE YOUR SUPERPOWERS! Numbers

SUMMER PERFORMANCES WITH ACID TRIPLE PERFORMANCE IN LJUBOJNO „In Ljubojno, every year on the 1st and 2nd of August, are held Ilinden meetings for Macedonian emmigrants. On this event participate numerous performers of folk and pop music. Aside them, this year the Acid Triple crew was also invited to perform. For us this was a great challenge because it was our first time of having a performance on a folk music. The performance went great, and its contribution had the fact that at one point we juggled in the rhythm of the drums.“ Goran Mitrevski

YMCA Bitola takes care of our young people. We do this through organizing tournaments (of a non-competitive nature), bicycle excursions, hiking etc. with the goal of recreation and fellowship. ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND CREATE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE! Numbers

Healthy Lifestyle

Throughout 2015 we have organized 7 events for urban cycling engaging 702 people. Presentations were done in almost all schools in the town, and we have done a mapping of the bicycle parkings in the city of Bitola.

41

NotifY Testimonials CYCLING CULTURE FOR THE NEW GENERATIONS „In November, we worked on the presentations at almost all schools in this town during three weeks. We came across a great response and big support. There were covered 677 students. On our streets comes the next generation of traffic participants and we must work with them so that they become better than us! We live in a time when pollution reaches alarming proportions, in a time when people don’t act as conscious and responsible citizens. It’s our job to work actively on solutions for these problems and to invest actively in our youth in order to not have the need to talk about the same problems on a same level even after 10 years, but to talk about them on a higher and more sensible level and to foster awareness from the people, as well from the decision makers.“ Viktor Iliev

44 YMCA Macedonia emphasizes the interaction among our youth working together for personal development of spirit, mind and body. We stimulate our young people in their diversity and creativity providing opportunities for better future for all. We see youth as our main target group, human recourse and development potential. We offer them possibilities for healthy development of spirit, mind and body through different group and personal activities involving creative work, intellectual challenges and getting new skills and knowledge. We empower all, especially young people to take increased responsibilities and assume leadership at all levels. We are building awareness of the cultural differences. YMCA Macedonia actively collaborates with World YMCA on a few international youth programmes: Change Agents programme, World YMCA Challenge, the global research One Million Voices and also with YMCA Europe as part of Volunteers for Europe, YMCA Sport in the Working camp group. EMPOWERING YOUTH! Numbers In 2015, YMCA Macedonia actively collaborated with the World YMCA on several international youth programs: Change Agents, YMCA World Challenge, the Global research One Million Voices, and with YMCA Europe with a total of 162 participants. 2015 was a successful year for cooperation.

GREAT START OF THE NEW CHANGE AGENTS „I will share impressions from the last camp fire evening, which I will remember for a long time. Every participant was supposed to give three sheets of paper to three participants (whether those were Change Agents, trainees, scouts who took care of our commodity and safety during the whole training) who left the biggest impression in the previous days, and throw a stick in the fire for someone who will miss them. It’s hard to depict it this way, but it really was a beautiful and emotional moment for all of us.“ Maja Ivkovska

ONE MILLION VOICES, ONE MILLION NEEDS! „“One million voices” is more than a research; it is an echo of voices shouting throughout the world for help. In Macedonia, our national YMCA Macedonia and the two local YMCA’s in Bitola and in Skopje conducted the surveys. With the help of our National General Secretary - Viktor Iliev, and our Peace Corps volunteer – Cindy Sorensen, we proudly contributed to the global research and presented the voices and needs of our young people. The research reached more than 300 people.“ Ivana Spirovska

TOGETHER FOR PEACE – ROOTS FOR RECONCILIATION „We, the young people, with our own ideas, with a different view of the world, started to write the new European history through traditional sweet meals from every participant country. Night of the chocolate from Northern Ireland and England, munchmallow from Serbia, Bosnian’s “medeno srce”, kvass drink and candied dried fruits from Ukraine, the irreplaceable bajadera, home-made halva, and all that was happening while in the background, a few cultures were mixing into friendships and vibrations of music that initiated the dance between East and West Europe. Life is one, but the different worlds between us are many. Many obstacles, and even more closed minds. But today, we’ve proved once more that our idea is the biggest thought in Europe’s head, very small and complicated, but very loud and meaningful: TOGETHER FOR PEACE!“ Aleksandra Andonovska YOUTH IN ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGES „The impression of this event was the great opportunity for gaining or improving communication skills, the making of international contacts, learning to work in international teams, improving self-confidence when making decisions, encouraging civic activism, as well as developing more tolerance, respect and understanding towards different cultures. The gained knowledge from this event is applicable in every aspect of living because there were presented practical methods for improving not just the personal character, but the whole society’s character as well. The participants went home with creative ideas which have a great potential of realization in their communities.“ Goran Stojanovski
