Global Leader 를 꿈꾸는 청소년을 위한 리더십 Small Actions, Big Impact!
엄마와 아빠의 마음으로 꿈을
꾸며 정광현 박사 (아콜라한국문화학교 교장, YLF Chair & Finance)
2017 년에 제 1 회 청소년리더십포럼을 시작하고 2,3 회를 진행한 후 2020 년 봄부터
코로나 팬데믹 사태를 당하여 3 년간 4,5,6 회를 온라인 비대면으로 진행할 수 밖에 없는
상황이었다. 온라인 비대면의 편리한 점도 없지 않았으나 오히려 온라인 피곤증이 생기게
되어 참가학생들이 줄어드는 위기를 맞이하였다. 교육위원들과 논의한 끝에 올해는
코로나바이러스가 완전히 사라지지 않았으나 학생들과 직접 만나 포럼을 진행하게 된 것을
정말 감사 드리게 된다. 그리고 4 회 이상 참가하고 올해 대학교에 진학하는 2 명의
학생들이 지난 제 6 회 포럼에서는 소그룹을 이끌어 갈 수 있었다. 그리고 이 학생들이
적은 금액으로 시작된 청소년리더십포럼의 최초의 장학금을 받게 되는 경사를 축하하기
위하여 그들이 대학교에 입학하기 전인 5 월에 진행하게 되어 예년에 비해 바쁠 수 밖에
없었다
한편 온라인의 장점을 살려 먼 곳에서 오기가 불편한 학생들에게는 온라인으로 참가할 수
있는 편의를 제공할 수 있도록 하자는 의견을 모아 대면과 비대면 하이브리드 (hybrid)로
진행하게 되었다. 매주 포럼 교육위원들과
연기를 통한 자기표현 워크샵도 진행할 수 있게 되어 훌륭한 포럼이 될
것이라 확신한다. 5 월 5 일 어린이날을

제 7 회 청소년리더십포럼을 준비하면서, 온 가족이 맛있는 음식을 먹을 수 있도록
노력하는 엄마의 마음, 온 가족의 필요를 채워주기 위해 노력하는 아빠의 마음으로
준비하자는 다짐을 해 보았다. 참가학생들의 작은 체험이, 그들의 작은 발견과 새롭게
형성되는 작지만 좋은 습관들이 세월이 지나 큰 것을 이루게 될 때 교육자들은 성공한
것이다. 교육의 과정이라는 것이 우리의 오래된 좋은 속담들 안에 있음을 깨닫
모든 사람에게는 적어도 한가지 이상의 달란트 (재능과 은사)가 있다고 믿는다.
왜냐하면 우리 인간은 창조주 하나님의 귀한 섭리로 이 땅 가운데 태어났기 때문이다
즉 모든 사람은 귀한 재료가 될 수 있다는 것이다 재료는 제품을 이루는 중요한
요소이기에 제품의 품질과 성능은 재료에 달려 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 그래서
우리가 교육하는 학생들이 좋은 재료로 쓰임을 받는다는 것은 제품이라 여기는
공동체(Community)에 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지 모른다 바라기는 강사님들의 귀한
강의와 워크샵을 통하여 참가학생들이 자신의 달란트를 발견하고, 작지만 어떤 좋은
습관을 가지고 이를 더욱 계발하는 과정을 꿈꾸는 포럼이 되길 진정 바란다. 공동체
리더십이란 공동체를 이루는 인재 하나 하나가 발견한 작은 재능과 은사가 작은 행동, 습관, 학습, 훈련 등을 거쳐 장래에 큰 영향을 끼치게 되는 비전이라고 생각한다. 학생
자신의 발전의 과정을 통해 속한 공동체가 발전하고 더 나아가 나라와 인류사회의
발전이 이루어질 것이다. 이러한 과정이 자녀들을 위한 엄마의 마음, 아빠의 마음으로
애쓰는 선생님들의 수고가 열매를 맺는 비전이다.

I would like to welcome you to the 7th Young Leadership Forum and express my gratitude to the Young Leadership Education Committee members for their hard work organizing this event. I am sure this forum will give you valuable experience and knowledge. Adolescence is one of the most important and unique periods in your life. You can develop your personality and thinking ability and build your life based on your values and beliefs. That’s why this forum will support you to become wise and great leaders. It is not easy to be a leader but even more challenging to be a leader who can set a good role model. Therefore, you must study and train to cultivate the qualities that make you a good leader. You will learn a lot from this forum to apply what you have learned to your own lives as well as plan for an amazing future with outstanding and innovative ideas. I wish you live with an awareness of responsibility for the public sense of duty while contributing to society and the country.

The Art of Collaboration with Sarah Carpenter
We often think that artists are solitary people who work on their art alone and without collaboration. However, art comes in many forms. Young Leader Sarah Carpenter is a Fine Art Printmaker and collaborates with her colleagues to create beautiful art every day. She works on team of intelligent, creative, and talented people who work together to create art, problem solve, and try new techniques together. Her team is agile and will change leadership depending on the type of project they are working on. Sarah will share how her fine art printshop operates and how she works with her colleagues with behind-the-scenes process shots of their unique work.
Sarah will also lead our young leaders in a printmaking project where we learn how collaborating with colleagues leads to beautiful art. We will learn to make text and image-based posters that can be reproduced by hand. Each small group will create their own concept, assign roles, and execute the printmaking work. Each young leader will take home a finished piece of art.

Wonderful Words – Presentation Skills for Every Day
Presentation skills are an important part of our everyday life. When we are presenting an academic project in school, advocating for change, or communicating with our peers we need wonderful words to express ourselves.
What are wonderful words? These are the words that we use to convey a subject in a thoughtful, clear, and concise way to our audience.
How do we come up with our wonderful words?
1. Identify our subject – what are we trying to communicate?
2. Identify our audience – who are we communicating with?
3. Determine the best type of presentation – what kind of presentation will help us communicate our subject to our audience?
4. Prepare and practice our wonderful words
Wonderful words are important for leaders – it means using the right words at the right time to communicate clearly and lead our colleagues.
During our group activity, let’s work together to create a presentation using wonderful words to communicate about an interesting topic. Each group should collaborate to create a short presentation with a strong main opening statement, three supporting arguments/facts, and a conclusion.

Each year that I have participated as a facilitator with the Young Leadership Forum, I have faced some difficulty that makes me quietly think “this will be my last year volunteering” and each year, I am thankful that I ignore that little voice that tells me to stop. Why?
Because of you. Your words, your actions, and your creativity inspire me to be stronger and more diligent in all my efforts.
While I share what I have learned with you in the forum, I also learn so much from you. Your ability to collaborate with each other and understand each other’s differences is inspiring. I see how hard you work to improve and grow as a leader - and I am thankful to be a part of your leadership journey.
I hope the Young Leadership Forum inspires you to continue on this path of leadership in the same way that you inspire me.

It was my first time attending this event.
I was worried at first since it was my first time attending and my first time as a group leader.
I did not have any confidence. I was surprised by the maturity, creativity, and humility of our group members.
They embraced me. They worked as a team to create their team’s name, print making and project despite two of our members being online.
They understood the importance of small actions that can lead to big impact in our society as Korean Americans.
Even though we did not win first place in the group project, to me, they won 1st place! I am so grateful that I got to meet such talented individuals.
I hope they can continue with their beliefs and talents.

저희가 한글 학교 포럼을 접하게 된 것은 아이가 다니는 한국학교를 통해서였습니다.
처음 2 회기를 팬데믹이라서 온라인으로 참관하였는데도 발표자의 감동적인 삶의
체험에 관한 이야기들과 그들의 경험들을 듣고 아이는 자신도 무언가를 할 수 있다는
동기가 생기게 되었습니다
또한 공동 사회를 위해 자신이 할 수 있는 일을 찾아내는 소모임 활동은 실제로 학교로
돌아와서도 아이는 한국인으로서, 학급의 한 일원으로 무엇을 하면 자신이 학급에 도움이
되는지를 생각하게 하였습니다.
실례로 하루는 교실 바닥에 떨어진 연필을 모두 주워 와서 잘 깎아서, 다음날 친구들에게
작은 것을 함부로 버리지 않는 것이 아끼는 길이라고 알려주기도 하였습니다. 마냥 어리고
개구쟁이인 아이인 줄로만 알았는데, 강의와 소모임 활동을 통해 아이의 생각의 키 또한
커졌음을 나중에 알게 되었습니다. 그리고 나와 가족, 나라를 생각하며 서로 어울리고
협동하는 것이 중요함도 알게 되었습니다 차별과 경쟁을 하지 않는 시간을 통해 아이는
인정받았다고 느꼈고 다음 포럼에도 또 가고 싶다고 했습니다.
이 모든 활동과 격려를 주신 선생님들께 다시 한번 깊이 감사드립니다.

This year’s leadership forum was special because it was the first in-person forum after the pandemic. This lead to new opportunities like icebreaker activities and fun games. We also got to see the speakers and our group members in real life instead of through a screen in Zoom, so I felt more comfortable speaking to other people. I had a great experience because I learned many important things. I learned that small actions can make a big impact because others can be inspired and spread the message through their own small actions, which can lead to the big impact.
The small group projects helped me realize that there are many different ways to efficiently spread the message such as making a small organization, making a video and sharing it, or just telling people about it through a presentation. Earlier, there was also a workshop. Where you would write goals starting from a big goal you want to accomplish many years later, and it keeps getting closer and closer until you get to a daily goal.
This helped me to visualize how small goals can eventually build up to an even bigger one. I also learned how much my communication skills improved over the years though things like helping out with the printmaking project and the small group project, as well as the interactive icebreaker activities. I was especially surprised since during the pandemic, I lacked communication skills. Overall, the leadership forum was fun and memorable, but also impactful and informational. Outside of the forum, I think this can really help me with school projects and clubs, as well as activities outside of school such as jobs.

The leadership forum was very fun because of the game session we had the food that was served to us, the friends I met and got a stronger connection with, and the learning experience. The game session had not only cleared my head but it was just very fun.
All the games were unique and most people hadn't played them before. They relied on teamwork and sometimes listening skills. This not only was fun but taught us how to be respectful to everyone.
The food was one of the best reasons why I loved this forum. I tried out 6 different recipes and filled up my stomach full of it. The friends I met and got a stronger relationship with were a very good part.
The team that I was selected with was very mixed together and we all got along very well. I had a friend from my school on my team and that made me feel very comfortable.
The learning experience was great because I also met an author there! I was very surprised on how the book Sea Change was made and the author's background on when the book was made.
This Forum taught me to be respectful.

사람들이 나에게 너는 리더가 되고 싶냐 하고 묻는다면 나는 대답하기가 쉽지 않다. 왜냐하면 리더가
된다는 것은 어렵다는 것을 나는 알고 있기 때문이다. 내가 처음 리더십 포럼에 참가한 것은 2018 년
한글학교에서 버몬트로 여행을 간다고 해서였다. 한글학교에서 1 박 2 일로 친구들과 함께 여행을 가는 건
처음 있는 일이라 나는 무척 흥분이 되었다 아직도 생생하게 기억하는 것은 친구들과 함께 즐거웠던 것과
라이스부부를 만나서 인터뷰하기 위해 한글 학교 친구들과 질문을 만들었던 것이다 우리는 라이스 부부가
쓰신 책을 읽고 그 분들이 한국에 가셔서 어떻게 어려운 환경에 있는 한국인들을 도왔는지 배웠다.
그러면서 1960-70 년대 한국의 정치, 경제 상황을 알게 되었고 어린 학생들이 심각한 환경에서 일을 한다는
것을 알게 되었다 어둡고 좁은 공간에서 하루 종일 일을 하는 그들의 상황도 충격이었지만 이런 한국
사람들을 돕기 위해 라이스 부부가 좋은 미국의 환경을 버리고 낙후된 한국으로 갔다는 것은 더 놀라웠다
나라면 할 수 있을까? 헌신과 희생을 한다는 것은 너무 어려운데 라이스 부부가 정말 대단해 보였다 그들과
만나서 인터뷰를 하면서 그들은 이미 나이가 많이 든 노인이 되셨지만 그들의 삶이 아름답다고 느꼈다.
버몬트 여행 후 우리는 리더십 포럼에서 1960 년대의 한국 상황을 간단하게 설명하고 라이스 부부를
소개하며 우리의 인터뷰 여행 사진과 이야기를 나눴다 여러 모르는 사람 앞에서 발표하는 것이 쉽지 않았지만 덜덜 떨리는 목소리로 나도 몇 줄 읽었던 기억이 있다 그때 호텔에서 여러 다른 한글 학교 친구들이 조사하고 준비한 프리젠테이션을 보았던 기억이 있다. 다들 정말 열심히 준비했다고 생각했다. 그리고 우리가 생각하는 리더상이 다양하다는 것도 배웠다.나는 처음 참가했던 리더십 포럼의 좋은 기억으로 그 이후로도 쭉 계속 리더십 포럼에 참가하게 되었다. 다양한 영역에서 리더로서 일하시는 분들의
이야기를 듣는 것은 흥미로웠다 특히 눈이 보이지 않으시는 분의 이야기는 나를 부끄럽게 했다
불평하고 원망하며 보낼 수도 있는데 그 분은 모든 것을 긍정적으로 생각하시고 어려움들을 하나하나 헤쳐 가셨다. 나는 그분이 고등학교때 보이지 않는 눈을 가졌지만 학생회 회장을 하며 아이들에게 밝은 에너지를 전달했다는 것이 정말 놀라웠다. 우리의 앞길을 막는 것은 오직 우리의 막힌 생각뿐임을 알게 되었다. 의료 기기를 발명하여 부자가 되셨다는 입양하셨던 분의 이야기, 한영 번역대회 1 등 하시고 국회의원 보좌관이 되신 이야기, 동화작가 이야기, 한국인 디아스포라에 대한 영화를 만드신 영화 감독이야기 김대중 대통령의
아들이신 분의 커뮤니티 살리기 이야기 정말 다양한 곳에서 빛을 발하고 계시는 분들의 이야기를 듣게
되었다. 나는 어떻게 살아야 하나에 대한 생각을 하게 한 좋은 경험이었다. 나는 또한 리더십 포럼에서 한
여러 활동들이 기억에 남는다 아직도 집에 액자로 남아있는 리더가 되기 위해 필요한 덕목을 쓰는 활동, 미술작가와 함께 했던 그림 그리기 활동, 나에 대해 더 잘 알게 된 나의 MBTI 알아보기 활동 등 코로나로 인해 온라인으로 리더십 포럼을 하기 전에 오프라인으로
번이나 리더십 포럼에 참가하면서 여러가지 많은 경험을 위해 얼마나 많은 분들이 많은 노력을 하고
계신다는 것이다 나는 이제 비하인드 신을 볼 수 있는 눈이 생겼다 보이는 것이 전부가 아니다 이것들이
만들어지기 위해 보이지 않는 많은 리더분들이 수고하고 계신다 그분들께 진심으로 감사드린다
리더는 힘들다 하지만 세상은 리더를 요구한다 그래서 누군가는 리더가 되어야 한다 나는 모든 사람들이
리더가 되는 경험을 했으면
Do you want to be a leader? If asked, it’s not easy for me to answer because I know that being a leader is difficult. The first time I participated in the leadership forum was in 2018 when I was traveling to Vermont from a Korean language school. It was my first time going on an overnight trip with my friends at a Korean language school, so I was very excited. What I still vividly remember was the fun I had with my friends and the questions we made together to meet and interview Randy and Sue Rice. We read the books the Rice couple wrote and learned why they went to Korea and helped Koreans in difficult circumstances. In doing so, I learned about the political and economic situation in Korea in the 1960s and 1970s and the harsh working conditions of young students. Their situation of working all day in a dark and confined space was truly a culture shock. What was even more surprising was that the Rice couple abandoned their peaceful life in America to help those Koreans. Commitment and sacrifice are what leadership requires, and the Rice couple was successful in their endeavors of becoming the leaders of their generation. When I met and interviewed them, their gray and wrinkled skin portrayed their beautiful lives. After our trip to Vermont, we briefly explained the situation in Korea in the 1960s at the Leadership Forum, introduced the Rice couple and shared photos and stories from our interviews and travels. It was not easy to present in front of many people, and I remember reading a few lines with a trembling voice. At that time, I remember looking around at the presentation that several other Korean school friends had researched and prepared. I also learned that the type of leader we think of is diverse. With the good memories of the first Leadership Forum, I participated in, I have been participating in the Leadership Forum ever since. It was interesting to hear the stories of people working as leaders in various fields. In particular, the story of a blind person made me feel ashamed. He could spend all those years complaining over again, but he was optimistic and went through obstacles one by one. I was
Really surprised that he had a blind eye in high school, but he passed on bright energy to the kids while serving as student council president. We learned that the only thing stopping our way is our closed mindset. The story of an adopted person who became rich by inventing medical devices, a story of winning first place in a Korean-English translation contest and becoming an aide to a member of the National Assembly, a story of a children's story writer, a story of a film director who made a film about the Korean diaspora, and a story of the son of President Kim Dae-Jung. I was able to hear the stories of people who were shining in various areas and demonstrating their leadership. It was a good experience that made me wonder how I should incorporate their leadership qualities into my life. Maybe it is because I regularly participate in leadership forums, I became a small group leader last year. Although I hesitated, I was thrown into the position without a choice. Surprisingly the middle school students and I talked together and were able to create a memorable experience. We made presentations to demonstrate that small actions lead to big impacts, which was the motto of the leadership forum. That was a step towards becoming a leader. As a small group leader, there were, of course, difficulties: I realized how comfortable it was to just sit and listen as a participant. Also, I realized how much my
previous small group leaders were working hard. Being a small group leader was so nervewracking and stressful. But I did it again. I'm now learning little by little how to bump into each other rather than dodging the current issue. I think I'm learning to be a leader little by little. I am grateful I was able to experience many different things while participating in the leader-ship forum five times. Also, I learned while serving as a small group leader that so many people are putting in a lot of effort to allow this event to happen. Many invisible leaders are working hard to create these memorable experiences for children. I am truly grateful to them. Being a leader is tough. But the world needs leaders. So, someone must be a leader. I want everyone to experience being a leader because those experiences not only make you a better leader but also a good follower. This is because those who have been a leader will respect the leader well and understand the leader's difficulties.

Global Leader 를 꿈꾸는 청소년을 위한 리더십 Small Actions, Big Impact!

사람들은 리더(leader)라고 하면 보편적으로 조직(organization)에서 보이는 곳, 즉 맨 앞에 서서
사람들을 이끌어 가는 지도자라고 생각합니다 허술함이라고는 느낄 수 없는 완벽함과 카리스마는 대중을
압도하기도 하고 우러러보게 만듭니다 하지만 제가 생각하는 리더는 이런 거창한 것이 아니라 우리가 속한
조직 어디서나 필요한 사람이라고 생각합니다 주어진 자리에서 최선을 다하는 사람들 말이죠 사람들
사이에서, 때론 보이지 않는 곳에서 조직이 방향성을 잃고 방황할 때는 서로에게 동기를 부여하고 위로하는
사람입니다 실패했을 때에는 좌절을 딛고 일어설 수 있도록 서로를 격려하고 공감하며 의사소통이 원활히
이루어지도록 신뢰 또한 형성되어 있는 사람입니다 그리고 무엇보다 자신의 부족함을 인정하고
개선하려고 노력하는 자가 진정한 리더라고 생각합니다 저는 청소년 리더십 포럼 소그룹 리더뿐만 아니라
교회에서 어와나(AWANA) 프로그램에서 4 학년 학생들의 리더로 섬기고 있습니다 학교에서는 STEM
클럽의 팀 코디네이터로, 매주 금요일 오후에는 저소득층 아이들 숙제를 도와주는 일을 하고 있습니다. 리더로 섬기면서 항상 느끼는 점은 리더는 대인관계 기술뿐만 아니라 조직을 관리하는 기술도 필요하다는
것입니다 교회 어와나 프로그램에서는 아이들이 지속적으로 모임에 참석하도록 격려하는 동시에 주어진
시간 내에 해야 할 일들을 마칠 수 있도록 지도합니다. 9 살 아이들의 눈높이에 맞추어 프로그램을 진행할 때 처음에는 미숙하여 베이비시팅(babysitting) 한다는 느낌을 지울 수 없었지만 어느 순간, 이 아이들이
미래의 어와나 리더가 될 것이라고 생각하니 차근차근 기본기부터 잘 가르쳐야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 제가 처음 시작한 일은 아이들 각자가 자기의 자리와 주변을 청소하고 정리, 정돈하는 일이었습니다 함께 사용하는 장소와 물건은 내 것이 아니라는 생각에서 인지 아이들이 지나간 자리는 항상 지저분하였고 벽은 낙서투성이었습니다. 함께 쓰는 장소와 물건을 깨끗이 사용하는 방법과 그 이유를 아이들 눈높이에 맞게 이해할 수 있도록 가르쳤습니다. 학교 클럽에서는 과학 경시대회를 위해 프로젝트를 출품하여 좋은 결과를
얻었습니다 매주 모임에 출석하도록 문자를 보내고, 각 개인의 할 일의 분량을 정하여 시간 내에 완성할 수
있도록 독려하였습니다 대화를 통하여 최종발표 (presentation)까지 전 과정이 원만하게 진행되도록
계획을 세우고 노력하였습니다 좀 더 나은 리더가 되기 위해서 저는 배움의 자세를 유지할 것입니다
자기만의 세상에 갇혀 있는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들의 의견을 경청하며 변화하는 세상을 이해하는데
배우고 연구하는 태도는 무엇보다 중요하다고 생각합니다. 비판적 사고력으로 역사 속의 리더들과 현재의
리더들의 리더십을 바라보며 수용해야 할 점들은 제가 리더가 되었을 때 한번 적용해 보고 싶습니다
청소년 리더십 포럼에서 소그룹 리더로 참석하면서 배운 점은 리더가 일을 전적으로 도맡아 하는 것도,
그렇다고 학생들에게 전적으로 맡기는 것이 아니라 팀원들이 개인의 생각을 자유롭게 표현하도록 격려하고
분위기를 조성하여 주어진 목표에 다가갈 수 있도록 이끌어가는 것임을 느꼈습니다. 균형을 맞추며
진행하는 것이 조금 어려웠지만 경험이 쌓이면 저의 부족한 리더십도 조금씩 향상되리라 믿습니다 그리고

People tend to think a leader is a charismatic person that stands at the front of the group. However, a leader to me isn’t quite as flashy as what people think; to me, a leader is someone who does their best to bring others together, encourage them and foster communication between them all from their own place in the group. My experiences with leadership include not only the Young Leadership forum but also my church’s AWANA program, where I serve as one of the head leaders for the 4th grade class, as well as my school’s STEM Club. To become a better leader in the future, I plan to continue learning from others. I hope to be able to look at not only our current leaders, but also leaders of the past, figure out what made them such good leaders, and then try to use their tactics to enhance my own leadership. As a small group leader, I learned that a good leader doesn’t try to do everything themselves, but they don’t make the rest of the group do everything either. A good leader tries to foster an environment where the members of the group are free to express their own opinions and is willing to listen to those opinions. I was especially inspired by Mr. Soonkyu Shin’s presentation where he described the attitude of his own teachers when he was a student. The way Mr. Shin’s teachers always tried to find a way for him to participate even though he was blind stands in stark contrast to how people would normally refuse to even give him a chance. Just as Mr. Shin’s teachers influenced him, he continues to influence us, and in turn, we influence the next generation of Korean-Americans.

아이스브레이크 시간에 많이 웃고 움직이며 서로를 알아가며 친해지는 모습과 열심히 그룹활동과
발표하는 모습, 맛있게 음식을 먹는 모습을 담은 사진들을 프로젝트 결과물 함께 e-book 으로 펴낼 수 있게 되어서 감사합니다.
또한 4-5 회 이상 포럼을 참가하고 고등학교를 졸업한 김한나, 박희주 학생들이 청소년리더십포럼 최초로 장학금을 받고 에세이를 쓴 것들을 후배들이 읽고 함께 도전을 받을 수 있게 되어
감사합니다 대학교에 진학하여 배움을 통하여 이 사회가 필요로 하는 리더로
