Mr Steve Stirling

Dear Heavenly God, As we gather here today in the spirit of unity and fellowship, we humbly come before You with hearts full of gratitude and anticipation.

We thank You for the opportunity to convene once again for the Youth Leadership Forum, where Korean American second-generation youth from across the nation come together to learn, grow, and inspire one another.

Lord, as we embark on this journey of discovery and empowerment, we ask for Your divine guidance and blessings to be upon us. Grant us the wisdom to absorb the valuable lessons and insights shared during this forum, and the courage to apply them in our daily lives. As we delve into the theme of “Building Community Strength: Small Actions, Big Impact,” instill in us a deep sense of responsibility and compassion towards one another. Help us to recognize the power of even the smallest gestures of kindness and the ripple effect they can have in strengthening our communities.

May this forum be a platform for meaningful dialogue, genuine connections, and transformative experiences. May our shared stories inspire empathy, understanding, and solidarity among us, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose within our community.

Lord, bless our speakers, facilitators, and participants with clarity of thought, sincerity of heart, and openness of mind as we engage in discussions and activities throughout this event. As we embark on this journey together, we pray for Your presence to be palpable among us, guiding our steps and illuminating our path.

May Your love and grace abound in every interaction, fostering a spirit of unity, respect, and mutual support.

K-Pop

YLF

“I was sick, and you looked after me.”

When Steve was only 5 years old, his father dropped him and his sister off an orphanage, where they spent the next 5 years before being adopted by a couple in the U.S. Steve eventually graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Economics and earned his MBA in Marketing and Finance from Northwestern University.

Prior to joining MAP International, Steve held executive-level positions with nonprofits including Child Fund International, Heifer International, ChildHelp and WorldVision US and in corporations including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Conagra Foods, AmeriTrade and Univera Life Sciences.

In 2014, Steve was approached by MAP International. Because MAP is a Christian organization, Steve saw this as an opportunity to live out his faith through his work. He has dedicated his life to bringing critically needed medicines and health supplies to some of the world’s poorest people, so that no child suffers the same fate that he did simply because of a lack of access to medicine.

God redeemed every experience in Steve’s life, even polio, to prepare him for his role at MAP International. He is particularly motivated by Jesus’s words in Matthew 25:36, “I was sick, and you looked after me.” Steve is passionate about MAP International’s mission, and he invites you to join him in helping to provide life changing medicines and health supplies to people in need around the world. A story of servant leadership

Yoon-mi Hampton

Former Lilburn City Councilwoman

Growing up in a small village in Korea seven years after Korean war was my training ground of seeing the resilience of community coming together Korea was struggling to rebuild war torn country, but everyone in the village was a collaborator They all helped each other by sharing the foods Example: before the winter, the whole village will take part in Kimchee making. Men will bring truck load of cabbages, and everyone will gather at the common town square and divide up their duties into sections It is an all-day event, but they get it done together and divide the portions to each household to make it through the winter During Spring, all men in the village will go out into the rice field and instead of saying “you do your own field and I do mine,” they spent all day planting together from one rice patty at a time, meanwhile, ladies in the village will cook and provide food and drinks, which were shared by everyone Americans would call it a “Potluck ” These villagers taught me that we can do lot more as a team and that no man is an island. Their action spoke more than the words and to this day I am a doer of the word.

Although I was a mixed-race child, I am proud to have grown up in a place where everyone believed, “It takes a village to raise a child ” Tragedy struck when my mother passed away and becoming an orphan was the last thing on my mind as a nine-year-old, but in the cruelty and uncertainty of life, I found strength in God, my Heavenly Father. I believe that I will be rescued from sleeping on the cold floor, being ostracized by orphanage bullies, and be sent to America where I felt I belonged African American retired Army sergeant who was married to Korean adopted me, so I thought how befitting it is to have parents of my ethnicity. In my Village I did not have television, so I did not know about the segregation and discrimination existed in America. Outside of my village, Koreans ostracized me because I was not 100% Korean, but I had a similar experience here in America when I arrived in the 70s’ Koreans did not see me as Korean; Black people addressed me as Korean rather than black. The oddest thing was that other nationalities accepted me as if I were one of them, so I got along well with everyone.

All my life’s journey would not have been possible without God in my life and my faith in Him. Never in my dream I will be where I am today, from orphanage to making history in 2021, as first African American Councilwoman in the city of Lilburn, and the first Asian in the county of Gwinnett, which consists of 16 cities I believe growing up in a small village and seeing the community coming together taught me the true value of the word “Teamwork.” Having a bi-racial background helps me to embrace diversity and be more sensitive to all races and cultures It is time for our young leaders to rise and become a positive enforcer to bring peace and harmony amongst all races in our nation Be proud of our heritage and embrace each other with one common goal that we all are “Americans,” and not defined by our outward appearances.

I hope that one day like Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character ” YLF

Yoon-mi Hampton was sworn in as a member of Lilburn City Council as the first Afro-American in Lilburn and the first Asian-American in Gwinnett County in September 2021. She enjoys serving her community. Before that, she served as a member of the Lilburn Zoning Board. She was Vice President of the Sterling Trace Association and President of the Sterling Trace Neighborhood Watch. She received a California Licensed Vocational Nursing Degree in 1983. She currently sits on the Wellness Learning Center Board. She has been a member of Lilburn Women’s Club since 2015. She is one of the Founders of Hapa Nation 1. She is an advocate for all communities. She volunteers for various non-profit community service groups, including Mission Agape Outreach and Hosea, Feed the Hunger. She believes we can achieve more by collaborating and embracing the diversity in our Nation.

Powerful Persuasive Writing

Persuasive writing is a critical skill for leaders to develop and utilize to advocate for themselves and their community. During this session, we will explore the powerful persuasive writing that has influenced our society and how we can utilize those same techniques and ideas in our day-to-day lives – and in the near future for our college essays.

Powerful Persuasive Writing is important for our leaders – it means using the right words to convey our message with words that impact the people that read it, no matter when or where those words are read.

During this session we will use persuasive words to present an idea that we believe in. Bring your creativity to this session! We will explore and write persuasive statements together! YLF

Understanding Community Leadership

Michael Park

Civic Engagement Co-Chair Business Development at The Whitlock Group, Inc.

What does community mean to you? How do you define leadership? These terms can mean different things to each of us, but there are some common threads that bind these concepts regardless of where you live or who you are In today’s discussion, we will be exploring these ideas and looking for applications that may apply to your lives in the present and future.

It is never too early to plant the seeds in one’s life for leadership and development Leadership is a lifelong endeavor, and the earlier one starts to experience opportunities the more growth you may see in all aspects of everyday life But why is this important? Is leadership something that I really need? Aren’t good grades and test scores enough for me to be successful? We have always been taught the value of education and hard work as the keys to success This holds some truth, but let us reframe the definition of success, and what that looks like for not only us as individuals but as an entire community For the benefit of all our communities, especially as Korean Americans, youth leadership in the next generation will be critical going forward.

Through my personal experience and life path, I hope to share with you all today some key leadership skills that you can start to develop These skills will not only benefit you personally and professionally but will start to shape your leadership styles and philosophies in all of your endeavors Community leadership does not have an on and off switch. It is also not a part time challenge. Once you are in it and understand the needs, it becomes a part of who you are always

Once these personal skills and individual styles start to emerge, we will talk about how you can specifically become more civically engaged. Along the way, you will most certainly experience challenges as well, so we will be sure to discuss what those difficulties may be and how you as an individual and we as a community can work together to overcome them. YLF

Michael works with the Whitlock Group in Duluth, Georgia providing clients with commercial insurance and risk management solutions. Michael has over 20 years of experience in the market research and business consulting space, of which four years were spent in Asia, first as a Fulbright Scholar in Korea. He returned to the United States to pursue his graduate studies at Columbia University receiving a Masters in East Asian Regional Studies.

Michael remains active in the metro Atlanta community having served as past president of Gwinnett Mosaic Rotary and national convention chair of the Korean American Coalition Metro Atlanta. Michael was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Community Foundation of Northeast Georgia and the Boy Scouts Executive Council of Northeast Georgia. He is a graduate of Leadership Gwinnett, the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Regional Leadership Institute, and Leadership Georgia. Student Ambassadors

Dear Young Leaders,

Over the last several years, I have had the honor of participating in the Young Leadership Forum. Each year, I am inspired by our young leaders and your ideas. When the Young Leadership Forum announced that the Forum would be hosted in Atlanta, Georgia, I knew that we would need the young leaders that have previously attended to join us in Atlanta to continue networking and expanding on our leadership skills.

This year’s pioneer group of Ambassadors has been selected from students that have participated in multiple years of the Forum and demonstrated leadership skills during their participation. This year, our Ambassadors collaborated to brainstorm leadership games that we will participate in during the Forum and will be our friendly faces to welcome our new Young Leaders that are joining the 2024 Forum. The Ambassadors will help bring unity to our groups during the 2024 Forum - they will be our glue!

I hope that this program continues to expand and that you form lifelong friends and support as you continue to improve the community around you. I am excited to see how you continue to grow as leaders in our community.

With Hope,

* The Ambassadors’ bios are listed in alphabetical order of their Korean names.

Valuable lifelong lessons to apply to my life

(Eric Kim, 11th grade)

Hi, my name is Eric Kim Honestly, I have no idea how many years I’ve been attending Forum, but I’ve been here for as long as I can remember and am thrilled to be back as an ambassador Every year, Forum has offered me valuable lifelong lessons and left me with both the motivation and abilities to be a leader in whatever community I find myself in I hope everyone has an enjoyable time and leaves with a continuing determination to become a leader

I am 17 years old and live in Fort Lee, New Jersey Some of my favorite activities are running, playing the piano, listening to music, and of course, sleeping. As a junior in high school, I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained through Forum into my life. I’m excited to get to know all of you over the next couple days. YLF

Learning from our group projects

(Kailyn Kim, 9th grade)

Overall, the youth leadership forums I have attended have had a positive impact on my thoughts and opinions My name is Kailyn Kim and I'm a ninth grader currently attending East Meadow High School in New York. I am an athlete who runs track and plays tennis, a musician who plays the flute and violin, and a leader. I often strive to take responsibility for leadership roles and work to improve

I first heard about the Young Leadership Forum through my Korean school Although I was hesitant to attend the first meeting, I enjoyed the guest speakers and was able to meet and work with new people That was the 5th forum in November 2021, and I have attended three forums since then. After the first forum, which was hosted online, I was amazed at how many similar experiences Asian Americans my age had. From bad experiences in school to good experiences sharing your culture with your loved ones, these were common to many of the people I spoke with One part of the forum that I enjoyed the most was our group projects Although the beginning of the meeting was awkward and quiet, many of us had similar experiences that we were able to share

For this year’s forum, I hope to take more of a leadership role and help kids who are new to the forum to participate and feel accepted. I would like the kids who attend this forum to be able to speak up or learn to speak up with confidence. Through my experiences in past forums, I have learned how to present and express my opinions with confidence, and I want to help others do the same. YLF

Building Legos and building leadership

Leaders help each other

(Hannah Park, 10th grade)

Hello, my name is Hannah Park, and I am 16 years old I grew up in Paramus, NJ and am currently a sophomore (10th grade) at Paramus High School. My interests include playing the flute, listening to music, and playing tennis. Some of my personal accomplishments include auditioning and performing in the New Jersey All State Band, winning silver in a KoreanEnglish, English-Korean translation contest, and winning 1st place in the New York International Music Concours

I believe that although leadership is an important trait to have, it is teamwork that allows a successful group to come together and work efficiently Through my volunteer work, I have come to realize the importance of helping others, which is why I decided to take the opportunity to be a student ambassador during this forum I would like to share my skills and experience so that everyone can work well together and learn what leadership is all about.

My goal for this forum is for everyone to leave knowing a little more about being a leader than when they came I believe that by creating small groups, we will all be able to help each other become better leaders by making up for areas where others may be lacking with our strengths, and vice versa. I hope that during this forum, everyone will be able to practice communication skills and cultivate a growth mindset YLF

Inspiring and empowering others

(Ian Suh, 9th grade)

My name is Ian Suh and I am a freshman in high school My hobbies include archery, playing video games, and learning card tricks My favorite class in school is science I am currently in my school’s golf and esports team, and I am in the chess club and card playing club My favorite color is blue, but I also like to wear black, gray, and white. A fun fact about me is that I am an only child and I have a dog.

I originally joined because my parents suggested it My first experience was inspiring because I saw so many people When we did the project, it was interesting to see and hear everyone’s different opinions on how we can impact our communities After that first time, I came back the next year where I saw new and familiar faces and the new perspective of other speakers and attendees. I want to inspire and empower others like the previous speakers. I also want to share my thoughts with others on how to put these ideas into action to help their communities. YLF

(Yeonsoo Shin, 10th grade)

YLF

Importance of communication and kindness

(Yongmin Jin, 9th grade)

My name is Yongmin Jin and I am from Fort Lee, New Jersey I am a freshman at Fort Lee High School For extracurricular activities, I am in a variety of clubs in my school, such as math league, science league, debate, as well as playing for our school’s bowling team. I also play in the marching band as a front ensemble member, and I’m currently in winter percussion.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve as a student ambassador for our 8th Young Leadership Forum As a student who attended the 4th, 5th, and 6th Young Leadership Forum and the Small Actions, Big Impact Brainstorming Workshop, I am aware of our Korean American community and the community at large Throughout the past sessions, I have received a lot of good advice on the various ways I can go to make the community a better place I am very excited to work with my fellow ambassadors to support our incoming students in a way that could make us all good leaders.

Throughout the past sessions, I have had many opportunities to meet people who have contributed to our community I have heard many different stories and careers of different people, and I have received great inspiration One of the most memorable and impactful stories I heard was from Ms Heidi Mun, the Student Ambassador Director of the Forum During her speech to us in our workshop, she once talked about how small actions can have a big impact. She told us that sometimes a simple word can change someone's life When she was going through a difficult time in law school, she said she once met a coffee shop worker who asked her if she was okay I remember Ms Mun saying that the greeting felt like a comfort that relieved all her worries at that time This story helped me feel more comfortable interacting with the community by showing the importance of communication and kindness. Obstacles make us stronger

(Yuwon Choi, 9th grade)

Hi, my name is Yuwon Choi. I’m a ninth grader from New Jersey, and I’m a student ambassador for the Young Leadership Forum. I joined the Young Leadership Forum in fifth grade after my Korean school told me about it Through this forum, I have learned many things about leadership, such as teamwork and self-confidence This has helped me become a stronger leader in my community. For example, it’s easier for me to communicate with people and work as a team when I’m doing projects for school, and I realized how important commitment is when working as a team

For this year’s Leadership Forum, I hope to learn a lot from being a student ambassador As a student ambassador, I have more responsibilities such as communicating with other students, planning things, and helping other young people on their leadership journey. Although there may be many challenges along the way, I know that I will learn from them and become a stronger person and leader through these obstacles. I also hope that the young leaders will have many experiences during the trip that will help them become strong leaders in their community, especially because there are many exciting activities that the students can learn a lot from Finally, I hope that we make many great memories as we get to know each other and work together to become better leaders YLF

Meeting new people, new inspiration

(Christopher Choi, 9th grade)

My name is Christopher Choi and I am 14 years old I have attended this forum three times I like to go outside, ride my bike, and play video games. I play the trombone, swim, and play tennis. My favorite season is winter because I like the cold and the snow.

A goal that I have as a leader for this year’s forum is that I want to learn more about leadership Another goal I have is to lead a group of kids to learn more about leadership in the future In the past forums, I have listened to the speakers talk about being a leader and I have learned so much from them I love meeting new people at the forums and learning together. Yuwon’s persuasive statement: The Leadership Forum Student Ambassador Program is a very great program because it is a great way to experience new things since you travel to different states, you get to build connections with other student ambassadors and young leaders, and you put your leadership skills into practice by participating various activities, like fundraising.

Biography: My name is Samuel Kang and I am a sophomore at GSMST. I’ve lived in Georgia all my life, born and raised. In my free time, I like to workout, play soccer or “football” at church, and keep up with sports, like the NBA. Although I’ve played many instruments like the cello and guitar, I’ve never continued to the extent of mastering them. I also make sandwiches for an organization that supports those who can’t provide for themselves. I learned about the Youth Leadership Forum because it was held at my church and joining the Forum was a great way to learn how to involve myself in an active, growing community from all the speakers who professed the methods to their way of life.

Persuasive Statement – Advice to a friend: The biggest risk is not taking any risk which is bound to fail. Don’t fear failure, it’s the only way you succeed, fearing it will make you fail. Embracing criticism only makes you stronger. Believe in yourself, defy limits and fears. Set high expectations and ignore negativity. Follow your beliefs, as some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.
