e, at Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, welcome the new season and are excited about the new opportunities it brings. Looking back at the past six months, amongst other highlights, we have been presented with the 100% Performance Ranking Award by Nissan Motors Middle East, received the Ministry of Labour award for Distinguished Organisation in the Field of Training, co-hosted a successful seminar on energy efficient lighting solutions, opened our new Honeywell showroom, and launched two Nissan vehicles - the Sentra and Altima, all creating milestones for great achievements. Looking forward, new seasons bring fresh colour and life. So, we would like to present you with our new and refreshed Y.K. Almoayyed Magazine, now revitalised with lifestyle sections, articles, and interviews with prominent figures in the company, starting with our long serving employee, M.T. Mathews. We also have a ‘Happenings’ section that highlights some of our biggest achievements and events of the year 2012. The YKA magazine truly portrays the essence of what we are as a company, including vital profiles of our employees and departments that contribute to our success, and our range of products and services. Corporate Social Responsibility
T
he Arabic word EDMAJ meaning engagement, is the combination of separate entities to create one goal. EDMAJ is a new programme that was launched by Y. K. Almoayyed & Sons in September 2010 to fuse Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Employee Engagement as an association to help reinforce Corporate Social Responsibility through various initiatives that are planned and implemented with the co-operation and participation of employees. It is an initiative also taken to assess and take responsibility for the organisation’s effects on the environment and their impact on social welfare. Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons is in the forefront of corporate social responsibility (CSR) through its history of charitable activities.
From his early days, Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed involved himself in charitable activities. ‹ Contributed to establishing the Bahrain Red Crescent Society, the Rotary Club of Manama and the Bahrain Committee for Arab Support. ‹ In 1987, he personally financed the construction of a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, in memory of his late son Mohammed. ‹ In December 2010, BD1 million was donated to the Kidney Dialysis Unit at Salmaniya Hospital by the heirs of the late Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed. With a reminder of Yousuf Almoayyed’s vision of a prosperous Bahraini society in mind, Y. K. Almoayyed & Sons introduced EDMAJ, an initiative that emphasises on both Corporate Social Responsibility and Employee Engagement.

K. received the award from Ministry of Labour for the “Distinguished Organisation in the Field of Training and Developing the National Workforce” which is under the patronage of His Highness King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa. Mrs. Mona Almoayyed received the award from Minister of Labour Mr. Jameel Humaidan at the awarding ceremony held on 26th December 2012.

the year 1999, Almoayyed Contracting Group (ACG) was established to bring all associated companies under one umbrella. Later in the year 2002, I became the Chief Executive Officer of ACG. And in June 2011, I became a Director of the Board for Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons BSC (C). I can say that all my achievements are attributable to the confidence and trust vested in me by the Almoayyed family. What challenges have you faced? From all my years at Almoayyed, I have come across a lot of challenges. We faced these challenges as a team. When I was asked by the then Chairman (Late) Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed to take over Almoayyed Air-Conditioning Contracting Division and turn it around as it was not doing too well, I accepted the opportunity and was determined to revive the business. It was a big challenge that I faced in my career. All the support I received from Farouk Almoayyed during those difficult days is much appreciated. I am grateful for all the whole hearted support from Almoayyed and all my colleagues and staff through out my career, without which it would not have been possible for me to achieve my goals.
Does ACG have any plans for new product developments / product range expansions etc. in Bahrain. As always, ACG keeps looking at every angle where it can develop its business. We plan to add new business ventures according to the needs and demands in the market. One of the development plans in the pipeline is the modernisation of our ducting workshop n

What is your vision for Almoayyed Contracting Group? My vision is to place ACG in the forefront of pioneering and reliable business establishments in Bahrain. What is the USP of the product range at ACG? We ensure that our products and services are within the reach of every customer and at affordable prices.

ell us a little about how you started your career. I started my career with Almoayyed in 1969 at the age of 23. In those days, our office was a workshop located near the Al Fadhel Juma’a Mosque in Manama, where we used to service domestic appliances such as window A/Cs & refrigerators. The work environment was struggling as there was a limitation on everything. The Company grew slowly, taking on a few agencies / distributorships of renowned brands like Toshiba, Philco, Servis, York, Ignis, GEC etc. In the 1960s and 1970s, commercial agencies were important to Bahrain’s business and their dealership rights were well protected.
My vision is to place ACG in the forefront of pioneering and reliable business establishments in Bahrain.
What advantage do customers have if they use your products – in terms of maintenance for instance? Providing top notch service is the motto of ACG. We do not compromise on quality of the products and services. It gives a sense of ‘value for money’ to the customers. ACG provides round-the-clock back up services to its customers. If the repair / maintenance work takes more than a reasonable time for reasons attributable to us, we provide substitute equipment / machines as replacements until the work is completed.

What are the key differences between the Bahrain market and other markets in this sector? Compared to other markets in the GCC, the Bahrain market is quite small. Being a small island, the pulse of the market is felt faster than others. Even a small drop in quality or competency can create a huge impact on the business.

What has been your biggest achievement? I am proud to be where I am now with the Almoayyed family. I was only an Assistant Manager of the workshop when Almoayyed Air Conditioning was formed on 15 April 1982. In the year 1987, I was assigned the responsibility to manage the Company. After the formation of the civil construction division, Almoayyed Contracting in 1995, I became the General Manager of the Company. In
What are the range of services that ACG provides? The Group (ACG)’s range of services are quite vast. It is the ‘one stop destination’ for all our customer needs. The various divisions of ACG cater to their needs from concept to completion.

he world of electronics celebrates 100 years of business operation in Bahrain. Ashrafs started their journey as a small shop in the souk in 1913 to grow and become the longest serving distributor of Sony and Kodak in the Middle East. Today, the Ashrafs group of companies in Bahrain comprises of Ashrafs W.L.L, Ashrafs Distributors, Ashrafs B.G.D.C and Gulf Color Laboratories. mal Al Saffar, a 21 year old Bahraini and a student at Bahrain Polytechnic majoring in International Logistics, was sponsored by Nissan Bahrain and Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, to be the first Bahraini to set foot on the South Pole. A dream that she dreamt for a long time, finally came true. Amal was part of a 70 member team that participated in the International Antarctic Expeditions (IAE 2013) led by the famous environmentalist, Robert Swan. This was an initiative started for the purpose of gaining a broad knowledge of the ecosystem and learning more ways to protect the environment. T
ell us a little about how you started your career and in what ways has your father inspired you? I started my career at Y. K. Almoayyed & Sons in 1974. My education was crucial to my father, especially mastering the English language. When I returned to Bahrain upon completing my education, my father introduced me to the family business. I have not looked back since then. He has always and will always be my idol; his perspective on business continues to inspire me. He was a man of his word, who always placed his customers and their needs first. What are the major changes that you have seen in Bahrain’s business? Business in Bahrain was smaller then; everyone knew each other, it was a tight knit and trustworthy circle. It was more intimate, personal and easier. People now are different, and every business approach must be carefully considered and evaluated; people have different motives now. There used to be mutual understandings and no reason for written agreements. But today, everyone needs to insure themselves from any possible risks and damages.
What has been your greatest achievement? All of the achievements have been a combination of the efforts of my family, board members and I. Our biggest accomplishment was sustaining the success of my father’s company after his death; we are still a profitable company that continues to grow bigger. We have established ourselves in the UAE, Qatar and Oman. Our other big achievement has been the balance score card which we initiated to evaluate our employee’s performances against their targets. We did this as part of our quality management strategy that enables us to reward our hard working employees and help them reach their career goals. What charitable activities are you involved in? I have been involved in various charitable organisations from a young age. I used to be a member of the Red Crescent Society and of the Child Care Society for the orphans in Bahrain. I was also a Chairperson at the Migrant Workers Protections Society for 6 years where we hosted many fund raising events aimed at helping the labourers in Bahrain. We have worked with the Parliament in improving the living conditions of the migrant workers.

Being the Managing Director of Y.K. Almoayyed, what is top on your list of priorities for the company? Running the company profitable with a healthy cash flow and having happy employees is my priority. Satisfied employees who see their future at Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons further drive our success, and their enthusiasm moves the company forward. That is the reason I involve myself in HR issues and aim to set up processes to overcome any difficulties that we may face and to further inspire our staff.
What are the biggest challenges of being a Managing Director and a woman? Being a Managing Director and a woman is challenging because you constantly need to balance your professional life with your family and social life, and your activities with various charities. It sometimes is difficult to juggle them all.
