The city is a container with an outstanding carrying capacity. Since ancient times, people have lived in certain regions where various social activities together with the built environment eventually formed a city. As a small container within the bigger container, the city, architecture absorbs the effects of the external environment and accommodates the trajectory of its occupants inwardly. On the other hand, it feeds back on and shapes environmental factors and influences the events in the neighborhood. Architects and Urban Designers use design as a tool to reorganize space and the social activity happening in it, so as to optimize the relationship between environment, architecture/ city and people.
Through internal logic control and reprogramming, we can strengthen the shaping process of building / City container for social interaction; With the help of data, algorithms and machinery, interdisciplinary forces can make buildings / cities more in line with information and integrate them with the external environment; The macro thinking and insight in the upper reaches of the industry have also become the guidance and signal of the future development direction of construction / urban industry. For architecture, information technology is at the forefront of change. With the accumulation of various forces, the future is full of unknown development possibilities. My experience makes me believe that just as the emergence of CAD has changed the traditional hand drawing, new technology has undeniable advantages for assisting architects in more efficient design; Just as the significance of industrialization system to modern aesthetics, the elements outside the container of architecture / City noumenon are starting from other links of industry, further affecting and updating modern architectural logic.

Print and Cast at the Same Time
In order to improve the printing efficiency and avoid that the strength of clay is not enough to support all the concrete, we adopted the method of printing and pouring at the same time. It makes sure that the early solidified concrete would not affect the later fabrication process.
Clay-printing Product and Demold Final Product
Another advantage of this printing method using clay as the mould is that during demoulding, clay can fall off by itself after several days of air drying. We only need to blow off the clay by wind gun in the complex or overanging geometry parts. Also, clay can be recycled to next printing process.

Geography of Vacant Land
Population migration and de-densification caused by economic change will lead to the vacancy and shrinkage of land resources during city development. As early as in 1933, German urban geographer W. Christaller has successively put forward the Central Place Model1 according to the massive growth situation at that time. However, the shrinkage of cities is becoming increasingly common around the world in the context of global economic restructuring and aging population structure.
Divided into three prototypes, the shrinking city concept2 was aroused by Rybczynski and Linneman firstly in 1996. Shrinking city has lost three conditions of city from the sociological perspective, that city is a relatively large, dense and permanently inhabited area of heterogeneous individuals3.The motivation behind shrinking was defined as the imbalance of resources caused by vigorous development which produces negative feedback later, or the transfer of the central industry location, etc. In fact, the decline of cities essentially represents the beginning of the end stage of an urban development cycle4
There are three different patterns shown in spaces of shrinking city instead of just overall decline of the city. The patterns can be divided as: 1. Circle type recession. or center contraction; 2. Reverse circle recession, or the suburban contraction5; 3. Mosaic /perforated recession, one mixed contraction which Reis. J.P refers to the idle industrial land caused by de-industrialization and largescale brown-fields appear in urban centers and suburbs6. In other words, the shrinkage is not always a uniform development form within the whole scope, but a regional population reduction caused by one or more reasons performing as the change of some areas in the city. And we should acknowledge that it is indispensable for the process of urban development.
For a shrinking city with the population migration and increasing vacant land, how to transform the void land resources into sustainable city components?

abandoned property; vacant land
Three modes of shrinking cities
For different modes of shrinkage, motivations are different. Key words such as decline, urbanization, sprawl, ecosystem service, infrastructure, immigration appear in the shrinking city research field frequently, and these can also be concluded as the driving forces causing different shrinkage patterns.
A. Donuts Pattern--Economic contraction happens in city centers
In the process of transforming to Post-Fordism era, the function of urban has been changed from industrial production type to information service type especially in western society. On the one hand, several megacities with highly centralized information and service functions emerged. On the other hand, many original
industrial cities went through severe economic recession aroused by global reconfiguration of factor markets. Harvey D. believes that urban contraction is the spatial representation of capital and labor surplus7. The city center, which used to focus on key industries and economic centers, is gradually deserted.Enterprises closed down, factories being underutilized, and people left the abandoned city center. In this case, economic contraction leads to the shrinkage of central and prosperous areas of some former industrialized cities, created a pattern of donuts which hallows in the center and leave the annular region.
B. Halo Pattern--Negative effects on marginal area
Rapid expansion of the population of cities, especially in big ones, were aroused by the continuous influx of rural labor force into cities. Urbanization rate increased rapidly in the accelerated urbanization period during 1950’s to 1980’s. Capitals of more than 10 countries account for 40% - 66% of the national population at that time. The increase of factories and cars along with the concentrated excessive economy leads to environmental pollution and serious traffic congestion. The expansion of population also caused serious shortage of infrastructure, public service institutions, and the urban housing, which in together brought great challenges to socioeconomic development. Further disappearance of green space and biodiversity reduction at urban fringe are the negative effects of population growth and economic and technological development. The urban edge gradually withers.
C. Hub Pattern -- Suburbanization process
The transfer of urban residents from city center to the suburbs is an important factor of Hub Pattern shrinkage, which the process is also defined as sub-urbanization8. The West entered a new stage of accelerated urbanization after the end of World War II. Urban conquest of the countryside9 has become an explicit fact in the 1960’s. The Production of Space10 describes the phenomenon as the latest development of capitalism in contemporary urban space . When people need better housings, or cannot afford to live in city centers during a fierce economic growth, internal and selective migration will occur. Incoherent demographic contraction occurred. In fact, in most declining cities, land consumption and urban sprawl remain a prevalentmeans of land use change 11
Reallocate the resources
Significant differences in the proportion and use of green space and urban infrastructure between growing and shrinking cities exist. In rapidly developing cities, cities usually lose the unprofitable green space due to fierce space competition, while the demand for infrastructure increases along with the population growth. On the contrary, shrinking cities face more vacant houses and vacant green spaces due to de density and population migration. Due to the large investment and management cost, urban resources such as parks, infrastructure and green space are vacant and underutilized. The Right-sizing model12 proposed by Schilling and Logan in 200813 has pointed out that when the urban population decreases, cities need to match the limited resources with the current population demand. Rational transformation of idle land and re-allocation of urban resources can break thevicious circle caused by urban shrinkage. When the transformation is not limited to the façade rebuild of existing buildings, but includes the transformation of vacant resources, it will achieve more sustainable future development.
Detroit was once the center of heavy industrial manufacturing in the United States. However, the intensification of racial contradictions and the high tax policy of the rich led to the outflow of the elite population and the impact on automobile enterprises. In 2010, Detroit's population was about 24% smaller than in the 2000. Facing the problem that more than one third of residential plots are abandoned, Detroit launched the Detroit Vacant Property Campaign to listen to citizens’ opinions and contact them adjacent to abandoned spaces. Its comprehensive green infrastructure strategy includes rainwater management, urban agriculture, low impact transportation, alternative energy regeneration, rainwater reuse, riverside reconstruction and so on. And now, Detroit is back on the road to revival and has been named as America’s Newest Tech Hub. As a typical shrinking City, Detroit's policies of smart contraction, reasonable simplification and cultural transformation have also become a successful case of relevant research.
Unreasonable resource allocation also exists on the contrary. Founded in 1876 in California, Bodie is a real ghost town. The number of miners in Bodie has reached about 10000 in its heyday in 1880 due to the rich mineral resources and influence of gold rush in 18th and 19th centuries. There were Wells Fargo Bank, four volunteer fire companies, railways, newspapers prison and other large facilitates at its peak. However, the depletion of resources and polluted environment soon caused a fatalblow to Bertie. In 1943, there were only three residents in the town. In 1962, the California Park Administration took over Bodie town when the last residents left. And Bodie was turned into a national park to assume the role of warning.
Green infrastructure—a vertical developed cascade to overlap the void
It is undeniable that with reasonable planning, vacant landscape has the potential to provide the required public services. We can regard urban transformation as a precious opportunity to redeploy urban resources. Traditionally defined as "“an interconnected network of green space that conserves natural ecosystem values and functions and provides associated benefits to human populations"14 , which can be used for entertainment, education and flood control.
A green infrastructure model of vertical superposition is proposed here.

GREEN PALACE
The vertical developed green infrastructure model is set up on the basis of the traditional green infrastructure model. Through the vertical superposition of the functional space on the vacant land, utilization of land resources in the space is achieved. First of all, green infrastructure can transform vacant land into green assets, which can revitalize urban productivity, stabilize unbalanced markets and disordered neighborhoods, eventually realizing sustainable development. Also, we always will find that the vacancy of some plots is inevitable, The green basic model of vertical development forms the superposition of infrastructure within a certain height through the flexible upward development of and the imbalance of resource layout must also exist.
The green basic model of vertical development forms the superposition of infrastructure within a certain height through the flexible upward development of different functions. Even if there is inevitable function failure or resource vacancy in one level, there will still be effective and active resource operation in other levels. In this case, the underlying land resourcescorresponding to this resource will not be vacant. In addition, there are a large number of movable function boxes in the model. When there
is vacancy in some levels of areas, the box can be moved to fill the vacancy within a certain range, so as to achieve the rational allocation and efficient redeployment of resources as much as possible, and achieve transformation of functions by artificially deciding the functions of undefined box.
At the spatial level, the gap space between the floors, circulations and boxes will become a free space for plants, organisms and resources growth. The ecosystem can develop vertically, and urban
agriculture can also be vertically arranged in these void spaces. The water flow can also be brought to the high place through the pump and flow in the interlayer and vacant space in the form of waterfall to form a landscape or irrigation channel. Rybczynski and Linneman believe that the goal of the correct scale is to build a smaller but more environmentally friendly city15.Under the background of continuous urban development, the model will improve biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability, use empty areas to provide beneficial ecosystem services, alleviate environmental pollution, and achieve simplified and environmentally friendly regional open space design.
The model also has the important significance of improving citizen participation and realizing income in addition to the rational allocation of vacant resources and the use of gap filling to complete ecosystem expansion. Acts such as turning vacant space into parks or squares and encouraging residents to join the decision-making process of transformation can strengthen the bond between people and public16-18. Also, projects with the correct scale can save the cost of maintenance, contraction and abandonment, and improve the financial situation of cities19. Therefore, a model of bottom-up functional investigation, environmental protection and full mobilization of vacant resources can also be judged as a relatively efficient transformation mode of landresources and a positive feedback model that plays a positive role in the urban economy.
Green infrastructure - cascade solves the waste of
land resources in urban shrinkage through the superposition of plates with holes. Let void occur in different positions of different vertical levels, and cover the vacant space after superposition, so as to reduce the possibility of vacant land, and transform the unused land into a comprehensive infrastructure with fixed or flexible functions, such as education, ecology, production and so on. By adjusting the existing resource utilization mode of land available for development, the urban environment can better adapt to the needs of the population, stabilize the unbalanced market and disordered blocks, reduce the low cost of maintaining vacant buildings and maintaining the cost of plot infrastructure, and improve the utilization rate of land resources and residents' quality of life. And turn vacant spaces that lack civic activities, interaction or other values into green assets for local communities.
Contraction is common in cities around the world and is likely to continue with unprecedented economic changes and population movements. Urban shrinkage has brought negative urban problems, such as space vacancy, decline in space quality, decline in urban vitality, decline in real estate value, further economic recession and so on. In order to solve urban environmental problems, repair ecosystems and improve socio-economic conditions, green infrastructure planning and correct scale model have become the possible direction of urban planning in the future. We should reflect on the causes of urban shrinkage in future urban planning, try to use new methods to alleviate contradictions and realize the sustainable development of the city.

In November 2015, with the support of all sectors of society, Shanshui fund was established in Qingshan village, Hangzhou, China . The main purpose is to protect water sources by means of trust, and effectively use local bamboo forest resources to restore ecological vegetation. In order to pay rent and protection costs sustainably, many unlocal volunteers join local community work. Qingshan village is positioned as the "future rural experimental area" since then. Young people join as new villagers, bringing new and old together.
Under the large population and huge space distance of the city, there is a indifference and sense of alienation between people in city life.
On the contrary, rural life makes communication and connection happen Therefore, young volunteers stationed in village for a long time need new rural houses to meet their needs of privacy, personal identity and modern work method, as well as hoping to have more connection with local villagers and left behind children, which is of large importance for next generation's education in village.
The new villager's house is designed accordingly.

Novi Sad, a city in northern Serbia, is also the second largest city in Serbia. It is the capital and economic and cultural center of Vojvodina autonomous province, which belongs to Serbia, and it is also the administrative center of South bachka region. The city is located in the south of the plain, at the intersection of the bachka canal and the Danube River.
In 1694, Novi Sad built the city. In the 18th-19th century, Novi Sad became an important commodity distribution center. After the turbulence of the European Revolution in 1848, the city gradually restored its former prosperity. After 1945, Novi Sad became the capital of Vojvodina autonomous province of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Since then, the industrial output value and population of the city have increased rapidly. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Novi Sad became a part of Serbia. During the Kosovo war in 1999, Novi Sad
was bombed by NATO forces and the refinery was bombed, resulting in certain ecological pollution.
The history of Novi Sad has branded cities under different political regime in historical periods. The land parcel of this renewal project is located on the Danube River, showing the texture of European cities in the 18th century from inland to river bank, the building and land division form in the Communist period, and the quartyard typology completely different from that under the transformation of the Riverside New Area. Starting from the entrepreneurial phenomenon of local university computer students and the culture of local music festival, this design connects the urban texture of each period with three main roads to create a new riverside area.

To enhance the sense of sequence of region of blocks under different historial regime from inland to coast, and well meet the traffic demand for newly planned area, the main roads and secondary roads are divided according to the grid on both sides.
Block and Quartyard
The riverbank area is divided into three parts in the direction of historical promotion, which undertakes the functions of high-rise, complex office building and affordable housing. Blocks in the form of quartyard are used as typology, reflecting a different form from other periods, There is a good accumulation of culture in NOVI SAD, and the river bank exists as an important urban portal. A large number of open spaces and monuments are carried out around the center to achieve good city impression and cultural promotion.

Shelter Design for Abandoned Pets and Adoption
Studio Work
Sept, 2020 - Dec, 2020
Location: Wuhan, China
Individual Work
Instructor: Lei Wang
The outbreak of COVID-19 has not only brought great disasters to mankind, but also caused a disaster to some pets. In the early days of the outbreak, the pet spread and spread of COVID-19 spread rapidly on the Internet. Although these rumors have been corrected by experts, there are still a large number of pets abandoned, ill treated or even killed.
On the other hand, according to the forecast of the report, China's pet market will change in the next decade, and the fast-growing single youth and elderly people will have higher and higher demand for pets.
The original intention of the project is to build a place to provide treatment and shelter for abandoned animals in Wuhan, a key focus of China's epidemic, and increase the opportunities for citizens to interact with animals. It is hoped to promote adoption instead of purchase, meet the growing needs of pet related industries and form a virtuous circle.
The project determines the objects as the main stray animals in the city, cats and dogs. According to the analysis of the activity habits of cats and dogs, the areas of the two are divided. The space for dogs to run in the horizontal direction and the space for cats to jump in the vertical direction are weaved, and then two rotating overlapping square blocks are generated. The overlapping space is provided with a core atrium and an interactive box, so that the activities of people, cats and dogs can be gathered in different height spaces of the atrium. The re division of the internal grid emphasizes the two sets of rotating and overlapping grids to form the division of logistics space outside the public activity space of the atrium.
It is hoped that with the prominence of interactive space and the sublimation of ritual sense of atrium space, it will provide abandoned and stray animals with a shelter, a transit station to improve their fate and a Utopia of a better life.
