Language and Culture Centre This term the language and culture focus has been people and kinship. In class the students have been learning about relationships and how to relate to each other.

They have practiced using kinship words in their writing and reading. They have produced some great classroom displays to demonstrate their understandings. Year 5 and secondary girls all made language group banners for family day that depicts their understanding of people and kinship on country. The secondary fellas had a great time with the men making boomerangs and spears, in school and out on Country.

Culture trips went along as planned this term and were a huge success. The students went in their language groups to Simpson Gap, Trephina Gorge, Harry Creek, Desert Park, Jesse and Emily Gaps, Thakeperte, Rainbow Valley and Papaparrentye, with a focus on being alert to what they could see around them. There are more great culture trips planned for next term.

The language teachers are looking forward to moving into the new Language and Culture Centre next term, which is exciting as it is the centre of our school and its purpose for being.

The furniture should arrive next week and then the teachers can start making it a true culture space.

Term 1 Swimming Carnival

We are meeting together for live online lectures each week and enjoying collaborating in our learning.

Learning should be a social and holistic experience, where we draw on our knowledge and culture. In these programs we are being supported for success, yarning with our lecturers and tutors. We are increasing our skills that will help our Yipi students to be successful in 2-way understanding.

This is how we "walk with" our students at Yipirinya In week 6 inclusion staff ran a whole school PD on de-escalating challenging behaviors and co-regulating our students. All staff learnt about the brain, how it affects behaviour and strategies to re-connect and re-engage a child who has moved out of their "upstairs" (thinking and learning) brain into their "downstairs" (fight, flight, freeze) brain.

Yr 2 Miss Deb and Miss Sara We have been doing lots of sporting activities this term.

These activities keep us very healthy and active.

In soccer we play and learn together about our breathing techniques and what food is good for us and our bodies. In netball we travelled to the netball courts and met some Australian players who showed us how to play the game.

Swimming is very exciting and we love to do this every afternoon while the sun is shining hot. Soon we will not be able to swim as the colder nights and days creep in.

Boxing teaches us to respect each other and how to look after one another. We learn that bullying is not allowed and that fighting is only to be played at the boxing.

Yr 3/4 Mr Nick and Mr Lachy The second half of Term 1 has been just as exciting as the first half for years 3/4.

The class has traveled to Wiggleys Waterhole and to Undoolia and saw and heard plenty of wildlife and smelt all different types of plants and bush medicines.

In math the students have been working on addition strategies such as friends of 10 and jump strategy and even some students were adding three digits by three digits.

Every Tuesday the students have been travelling to Central Craft with Ms Lucy to learn and play with clay. The students have been making bird nest and egg during these lessons and are looking forward to the finished product.

The year 3 and 4s are very excited for the swimming carnival and have been doing practice races so they are ready to go for the actual event.

Yr 5/6 Mr Oliver and Miss Tiara We have had an adventurous Term 1 in our Year 5-6 class.

We have also been out and about exploring Alice Springs and its neighbouring communities. From Ross River, Emily Gap, and Sandy Bore to name a few. We also took part in an AFL exhibition where some of our boys got to really shine and showcase their skills against other school teams. The girls have been on the mountain bikes with Georgina from AusCycling, hitting some of the local tracks around the school and learning about how to overcome and be confident about challenges. Our class participated in Net-Fit Netball where we met two professional netballers, Sarah Hall and Sharni Layton. We did some drills, went over the basics and then we played an exciting game afterwards. We have been busy.

We have seen some cool reptiles at the Alice Spring Reptile Centre. They taught us about the lizards in Northern Territory and all over Australia, and we experienced petting some lizards too. We discovered reptiles like geckos, snakes and even a crocodile called Terry!

Our classroom has a lot of keen learners who know how to make the most of their writing and spelling. Every morning we routinely explore new content then create a recount of our story using our senses.

We have a happy class that enjoy learning two ways, From Mr Oliver and the Year 5-6 class.

Secondary Miss Tahlia and Miss Marlene We are excited to finish our first term together in the new look secondary program.

Many students are sad to go on holidays as they are really enjoying their time at school.

We have been very busy going on at least 1 or 2 excursions each week. Students have really taken advantage of the fresh water that came with the big rains. We have been swimming at lots of different waterholes and also investigating what wildlife thrive in the water.

We are lucky enough to have many external programs that come to our class every day and the students especially like soccer and AFL programs. Our students have been accessing a number of activities outside of school hours this term as well. We had a number of fellas participate in a men’s netball exhibition match, girls went to a come try day at softball and both fellas and girls committing to weekly soccer and AFL club team training/competitions.

John Moriarty Foundation John Moriarty Football (JMF) is Australia’s longest-running and most successful Indigenous football initiative for 2-18 year olds. Expertly led by Martin Hidalgo and his team, JMF will continue to run full day programs at Yipirinya School in 2022. JMF’s transformational skills program uses football for talent and positive change and has a track record of improving school attendance and achieving resilient, healthier outcomes for some of Australia’s most remote Indigenous communities.
