Sushi House Ben-k is probably one of the most student friendly restaurants around the Glenferrie area and is right by the train station and Swinburne University. It has great comfort food that makes you feel right at home. Not only is the food incredibly comforting and delicious, the prices are quite affordable, making it a really good spot for any student to pop by between or after classes. They offer a range of food from sushi hand rolls and share platters. They also offer comfort food meals such as the classic Japanese omurice, katsu curry, udon bento and ramen.

Tokyo table is a neat little spot also conveniently close by to the train station and Swinburne University. They are known for their Japanese style ramen and chicken; as well as delicious donburi, udon bento, katsu, curry, BBQ, and more! They have large and filling portion sizes. They even offer a curry katsu that is the size of your head at a reasonable price.

Samurai is another affordable cheap meal that is budget friendly for students. It is a fairly short walk from the station too. They’re known for their bento boxes, sushi, sashimi, katsu curry and green tea matcha milk shakes! A small business with a cosy, warm and inviting atmosphere for you to enjoy a nice hearty meal after class.
“A really cozy Japanese restaurant with an amazing quality of food. Not to mention that it’s very affordable for the portion they served. Really love their sushi and chicken katsu curry!”

Izakaya Jiro serves a more authentic and traditional type of Japanese cuisine. It moves away from the homemade comfort food and more towards sharing plates, yakiniku (BBQ) and sake. Its interior has lovely ambient lighting and combines modern and traditional Japanese interior design. Izakaya Jiro is more expensive compared to the restaurants previously mentioned. However, it’s the perfect spot for a special occasion and worth the cost.
Wagyu beef was SO DAMN GOOD, and they definitely didn’t skim on the side dishes. We ordered sashimi twice, very happy with what we paid for. Two hours were enough to get full from all the delish food.” - Usagi

Hakata Gensuke Japanese restaurant specialises in ramen noodles. It is the perfect place to go during the colder months for a warm and delicious meal. First founded by Mr Yoshimura and has secured the title of Ultimate Ramen Champion in 2011 and 2012, their ramen is award winning. Known best for their tonkatsu ramen, which has a beautiful flavourful pork bone broth that is sure to warm you up.
“Very tasty broth and not overwhelmingly spicy to the point of being uncomfortable. The flavoured egg was perfect. Highly recommend!”
