TAIPEI FINE ART MUSEUM EXPANSION COMPETITION

PROJECT AT WORK / COMPETITION / YEAR 2022

The original Taipei Fine Art Museum(TFAM) has launched in 1983, providing various highquality exhibitions and collections by the 1990s. Since the insufficiency of exhibition areas for different scales of artworks, new genres of art, and research spaces for the future propaganda and preservation of art, its expansion had been eagerly expected by the art society. The new building provides venues for contemporary art that applies new media, new technology, and live arts, as well as research and outreach, among other interdisciplinary/hybrid types of arts. It will incubate innovative arts and be a hub of art education for future generations.

THE LEE HOUSE (CLT Construction)

PROJECT AT WORK / PRIVATE HOUSING / YEAR 2017

The clients' brief requested an exquisite, functional home with a flexible floor plan for living, dining, and hosting space. Our proposal for the house that balances fluidity and solidity with raw materials inspired the interior palette of concrete, steel, and wood. On the ground floor, with the east-west axis of the rectangular volume, a defined corridor connects the porch with the living room, passing the staircase and the open kitchen. By creating a maximum number of casement windows, interior spaces are enlivened by ample daylight and the lush garden landscape.

General Construction

Yuchen Hung (originarch@seed.net.tw)

Developed construction drawings, 3D model making and rendering.

Up a CLT staircase near the kitchen is four kids' bedrooms and the main suite. In order to defuse the compact atmosphere, the entire south wall is slightly tilted forward to expand the upper width of each unit. In addition, metal-structured balconies are suspended to form a secondary façade from the interior space to the exterior landscape.

The local contractor, importing customized CLT units from a Japanese company, is undertaking the construction process. Each panel has been cut and milled accurately per the provided construction drawings, and our structural engineer suggested using bolts and fasteners from Italy. Thus, precast modular construction built the whole structure in fast and efficient progress.

Tainan city is located in the sub-tropical region, close to the Tropic of Cancer. Thus, the client chose to build his residence made of wood instead of concrete due to the efficient thermal resistance. Apart from the physical reason, wooden houses are considered a more literary expression and aesthetic representation.

AI GENERATION +

URBAN DESIGN

SKILL COURSE / RC16 / MARCH. URBAN DESIGN / 2023-24

As urban challenges become increasingly complex, we must look beyond the limits of human cognitive frameworks. By integrating non-human intelligences— such as biological intelligence and the rapidly advancing capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI)—we can break free from conventional thinking and discover innovative solutions.

This project explores how AI can be utilized to generate multimodal outputs, including text, images, and 3D models, guided by designers and informed by real-world site contexts through carefully structured conditional inputs. Additionally, biological intelligence is examined as both a protocol for simulating site-specific processes and as a medium to bridge AI with the environment.

CHINAMPAS REVIVAL

WATER & MODERN MEXICO

DESIGN PROJECT / RC16 / MARCH. URBAN DESIGN / 2023-24

The global water issue is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today. With growing populations, climate change, and increasing demand, access to clean and safe water is becoming more scarce. Over 2 billion people worldwide lack reliable access to safe drinking water, leading to health crises, food insecurity, and economic instability. Water pollution, over-extraction of resources, and inequitable distribution further exacerbate the problem. Addressing this issue requires urgent international cooperation, sustainable water management practices, and innovative solutions to ensure that everyone has access to this vital resource, essential for life, health, and prosperity.

MEXICO CITY

Mexico City, originally founded on a series of lakes by the Aztecs, was once the vibrant, water-based metropolis of Tenochtitlán. The Aztecs ingeniously engineered a network of canals, dikes, and chinampas (floating gardens) to manage water and sustain their thriving civilization. However, after the Spanish conquest, these water systems were largely drained to facilitate urban expansion. As rapid urbanization replaced the lakes with infrastructure, the environment and ecosystem underwent significant changes. Today, Mexico City faces the complex challenge of addressing these environmental issues while striving to preserve its rich historical heritage.

Begining of water issues in Mexico city

[Top View Simulation of Chinampas Morphology]

SITE ANALYSIS

Topography and Geographic Location

Such a high-altitude basin surrounded by mountains makes it easy for rainfall to accumulate with the city and difficult for it to drain away quickly.

Modification of Lakes and Rivers

For urbanization, they modified the lakes and rivers, almost totally drain them. The changed water pattern brings with flooding and water scarcity issues.

Inadequate Urban Infrastructure

The inadequate urban infrastructure cannot deal with the water issues very efficiently.

Land Subsidence

Excessive groundwater extraction to deal with water scarcity has caused yearly ground sinking. This subsidence further compromises the effectiveness of the drainage system, increasing the risk of flooding.

[Flooding Risk for Big Rain] [Flooding Risk for Small Rain] [Water Scarcity Distribution] [Land Subsidence Rate] [Land Use]

SITE CHOICES

Overlaying all mappings from research, we identified three key areas with unique terrain and functions. The most critical is Xochimilco, where the Chinampas system remains active but faces flooding, land subsidence, and water scarcity issues. The second area, the Historic Center, also suffers from flooding and subsidence, making it another peak of these issues in Mexico City alongside Xochimilco.

SITE I_ [History Centre]
SITE II_ [Xochimilco Wetland]

[Water Filtration]

The units with more bio-materials grown with are designed as filters, which apply bio-machanisms to deal with the polluted water in the urban context.

[Water Collection]

The open space like plazas and parks are lowest points in the urban context. They will be the beginning point to revive water by utilizing geographic advantages to collect and store water.

[Water Transportation]

Water transportation system is not only work for industrial or business, tourism is also its main aspects. Besides, the water element are also delivered among lifes through bio-mechanism.

[Water Drainage & Storage]

The thick roots are able to guide water into deep ground which help to drainage the city center in flooding season and water will be stored in the underground.
