SITE & STRATEGY
TRADITION & MODERNITY
This project intended to be located in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center. In Guangzhou city, there are a lot of cultural museums or public architecture in honour of history, but most of them are in the Yuexiu and Liwan district. Other parts of Guangzhou is lack of such cultural places. So the designed Linnan cultural museum is expected to improve the cultural atmosphere of the Panyu district.
The site is near the central lake of the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, which is also surrounded by numerous modern buildings such as a stadium, a sports center and the student domitory. Additionally, there is also a ancestral hall on the island of the central lake and Linnan Cultural Garden located at the south of the ancestral hall.
Modernity Earn money with MODERN TECH
The strategy intends to connect the modern elements such as some modern campus buildings and the Linnan traditional culture which can be represented by the ancestral hall and Linnan Cultural Garden. It turned out to be an axis from the modern university campus to the tradional ancestral hall on the central lake. Along such an axis, people can enjoy the process of experiencing a change from modern atmosphere to traditional culture.

Engraved with TRADITIONAL CULTURE Tradition The axis of the strategy begins from the teaching area behind the domitory, goes through the ancestral hall and ends up at the Linnan cultural garden. Besides the change of building height along the axis, a change in the culture and atmosphere is shown as well. On the two sides of the axis, there are also some modern buildings such as a stadium and a students activity center. These buildings act as modern campus factors led to our site by roads or pedestrian path and contribute to the change from modenity to tradition along the axis.

1 Convergence To make the community center become the urban lobby, the convergence of city people is crucial. Thus the design takes it most seriously when considering the site.
2 Accessibility Several blocks in different shapes and functions, which also attract people outside to come, will be put in the site. The four blocks provide the accessibility from city to community center.
3 Connection & Flow In the central part of the site, a running track is built to connect other parts of the community center and make the people flow into our building.
4 Function Different functions are considered in the community center, including sports clubs, dessing rooms, a community hall courtyard and a cafe are some of the functions considered.
The concept of this design comes from one type of the archaeological necklace shown in the archaeological photos. Some animal bones, boulders or other stones are strung together by a cord. The items on the necklace are always in different materials and shapes but when they strung together, they seem like blending with each other and become a whole. Thatâ€™s the original source of the idea. Like the different types of things on the archaeological necklace, there will be some blocks in different shapes, size and functions in the community center. These blocks are located around the core of the site. To make them communicate with each other and merge together, a block in circle or ellipse will appear in the central part of the site and string the several blocks together. In this way, the functions are flowing into the community center. In addition, the blocks strung by the circle provide the accessibility from the surrounding buildings and city. So the core of community center in a round shape can also function as a transfer space for the neighbourhood. 13

Based on the idea of continually doubling programmatic space throughout the design, such as coupling the use of the indoor running tracks for roller skating with fencing, the building is becomes truly multifunctional. For example, the dance hall doubles as a multipurpose hall for meetings, concerts, theatre or parties. The roof of the building is also designed as an activity landscape which facilitates runners, skaters, bikes, roller skating and skiing in wintertime. And the section details are as follows.

This program is to design an architectural department hall in the Beijing University of Civil Engeenring and Architecture. Industrial Area
The university is located in the Daxing district of Beijing and it is out of the fifth Ring Road. There is a secondary trunk road near the university leading to the 5th Ring Road which is an arterial road.
STUDY Residential Area
There are several existing conditions around the university including an old residential area, an industrial area, a palestra and some green space. It can be shown that the university is the cultural center of around the area.
Inside the university, the site is located at the southeastern corner and can be observed in the outside urban roads. It is very close to the front gate of the university. Next to the site is a group of teaching buildings and green space.
1 Three blocks are put in the site according to different functions and groups of users. The height of blocks are adjusted to have a good view of the city.
2 The block, whose users is both teachers and students, is functioning as a more public part to combine the other two more private parts.
3 An indoor atrium and an outdoor courtyard are dug out from the block. Different types of communication space are organized based on the two main space.
4 Around the two main space, series of outdoor platform that used to increase the communication between the busy users added to the building.

SECTION DESIGN Some of the sections of architectural department hall are specially designed. The traditional simplex space of the atrium is replaced by a seies of multilayer space. In addition, some volume of the building is dug out to become a platform which make the boundary between the building and outside free as well. And this design also provide the inner space plenty of sunlight.
COURTYARD LAYOUT The courtyard of the architectural department hall provide students, teachers and guests a space to communicate with each other. Two sides of the building are built on stilts, which are transparent for people coming in. So there isnâ€™t any specific boundary between inside and outside the architectural department hall. There is also a big step from the second floor to the courtyard where students can sit on it to enjoy and have rests in the spare time. Additionally, there is a corridor connecting the entrance hall to the studio area on the courtyard.

NATURE INVOLVED A lot of nature elements are added into the platform between the volumes of architecture school. Thus activities will not only take place around the building, but also inside the artificial forest. Communications between people in the green roof and on the platform of the block can also be established. 27
INDOOR SPACE LAYOUT Inside the building, from stair landing to outdoor platform, from green roof to overhead space, from indoor atrium to outdoor courtyard, each is a splendid space for communication between students and teachers.
SECTION LAYOUT From the sectional perspective, the arrangement of different functions is clearly presented, such as classrooms surrounding the atrium space, some outdoor platforms which combine with the rooms and public functions around an outdoor courtyard.

LANDSCAPE RESOURCES The river used to be the origin of the Pazhou east district is now partly buried underground corresponding to the development while the remaining part underground is across the site in the middle.
There is a lowland farm area in the site which is still have the use of water storage.
The primary school in current situation is not so convenient and accessible to the resident of the site and the circumstence is not so safe.
ARCADE ARCHITECTURE Some arcade buildings which representing the traditional Guangzhou architecture is remained in the site but they are not in good conditions.
COMMERCIAL AREA There is to be constructed a commercial area for electronic business which is in a very high FAR. This area is lack of public space acess to other parts of the site.
SUBWAY LINE Two subway lines will go through the middle of the site and there will be a transfer station.

STRATEGIY IN DIFFERENT LAYERS
This area combines several systems in an interactive way to make this district become a vigorous part of the city, and to lead a social healthy way of living as well.
SKY LINE Set the private space on the tower, and try to return the ground to the public. It can also motivate the communication between people.
SKY WALK Sky Walk System on the roof of the annex created a continued walking experience between the blocks.
PEOPLE BASED Based on people's needs, Living and working in the same place is supported by mixed functions: business, commerce ,residence and public spaces spread through the all area.
GIVING A BREATH For Pazhou West is a high density district, there requires both a Public Space System to onganize activities and a Green Land System to take a breath.
FUNDAMENTAL SHELTER Small blocks and high density of road make this area more suitable to walking than driving.
GROWTH FOREIGNERS AND ITS DIVERSITY Guangzhou is renowed for its cultural diversity and its liberty of expression. Majorly dominated by the western cultrue, and there are more and more people from across the sea setting down in this city. These diversities have their own characters. There is an opportunity to share these difference instead of being enforced to become one.
SECTIONS There are different relationships between the highrise building and the podium building. Also, different experiences of the public space are formed.
VARIATIONAL URBAN SPACE Variational urban space comes into being according to the design, including central park surrounded by four commercial highrise buildings, green space next to the channel and commercial sank plaza etc.
Series of the space is apparent in the diagram and there is a gradual change in the rhythm: from the commercial atmosphere part where two subway lines intersect to the more quiet environment that is more suitable for residence in the both ends of the designed area. Pearl river and the high dense area such as electronic business area are also shown. 42

SITE & INTRODUCTION
The aim is to develope a satellite campus for The USC Marshall School of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurial Studies (CES) located in the Broadway Historic Theater and Commercial District of Downtown Los Angeles. Starting with considering the most efficient way to use such a narrow and small land, this design regards “coworking space” as a multi-function program which can be in different function in different period times in one day. Moreover, it has a continuous lobby filled with many public program, which is on and connected by big stairs. It’s also an emphasis of vertical movement in such circulation located at a narrow site. Basically, the project has a two may circulations, of which one is public sequence and one is private sequence. For structure system, there are two cores combined with circulations. Each of them is connected with the trusses which give a support for the co-working space together. For mechanical system, there are two parts which based on the two cores come together and distribute towards the central part of the building.

RESOLUTION HIGH Thesis project for precedent Modern Modular from Resolution 4 Architecture School of Architecture, USC Academic Project Jan-May 2018
PRECEDENT - MODERN MODULAR The Modern Modular, is a systematic methodology of design that attempts to leverage existing methods of prefabrication to produce custom modern homes, specific to each client and site. It is based on Conceptual Building Blocks they call Modules of Use. The projects represent a series of experiments to test this concept. The Modern Modular is a method of design. The Berkshire House is one of the residential building consists of the modern modules mentioned below. The majority of residential modular manufacterers in the United States use a standard width of twelve, fourteen, or sixteen feet, based on limitations determined by the Department of Transportation. Althrough standard lengths of modules vary per factory, the most common is sixty feet, which is an optimum length in terms of filling assembly line spacethe primary measurement of value in the assembly line methodology. The essential elements of utility, such as furniture, fixtures, cabinets, and appliances, are broken down and reconfigured into basic components. These components are organized in multiple arrangements, based upon a dimension that responds to functional requirements and efficiency of circulation. The results are compositional strategies that operate within a maximum width of sixteen feet, the Modern Modular's optimum dimension for domesticity. Maintaining the maximum sixteen-foot width and sixty-foot length, the Components of Domesticity are arranged in contiguous relationships relative to use, creating linear bars we call Modules of Use. These modules are idealized volumes to be fabricated, conforming to the standard line space of the factory. Designed within the limits of the industry in terms of efficiency, both in use and implementation, these modules become the Conceptual Building Blocks of the Modern Modular.
THESIS PROJECT - RESOLUTION HIGH The common module in Modern Modular is 14' by 16' rectangular space, which eventually can only form regular and rectancular buildings. What if uses want some irregular space or form and interested in the diversity of space? There comes my proposal - higher resolution of the building. Firstly, what does the word "resolution" mean? We are all familiar with the picture resolution. Picture is made from millions of tiny blocks called pixels (picture elements). The display resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. Similarly, The resolution of architecture is a measure of the spatial density of information inherent in a building. To start the project, choosing the module is needed. There are mainly 3 types of modules according to their sizes: small module like a brick, big modules like a room, and the meso-module in-between. My proposal is to use meso-dimension modules instead of the room-size modules in Modern Modular to get high resolution buildings. All parts of the house project, from facad to roof, from wall to structure, are formed with modules generated from a simple bar. Sometimes the modules come from the roof and extend to the ground to be structure elements. Sometimes the modules will act as a seating. Space in the project is not defined with permanent boundry, but activites. Different layers of interior space, lighting experience, and enclosure, will give users a lot flexibility to choose where, when and what to use. There comes the project - Resolution High.
