groves nurseries & garden centre

Nestled conveniently off the main A35 route through Dorset, Groves welcomes you with ample open space, a diverse selection of plants, gardening essentials, and unique gifts. Our award-winning, family-friendly restaurant, Ivy House Kitchen, adds to the charm, making Groves the perfect destination for all ages. Whether you’re seeking inspiration for your garden or simply in need of a convenient pitstop on your journey to the South West of England, Groves offers everything you need, along with the amenities of a modern garden centre.

Let’s take a journey back to 1866 when our story began with the vision of Charles William Groves, who planted the seeds of our small garden nursery in Piddletrenthide. Fast forward to today, and CW Groves and Son has blossomed into one of Dorset’s finest garden centres and nurseries, thriving for over 150 years as a cherished, independent family business.

Plants are at the heart of everything we do at Groves, and we boast a wide selection at our Bridport and Beaminster garden centres, as well as online. Many of the beautiful plants you’ll find in our garden centre have roots in our own nursery, tended to by none other than Becky Groves. Becky’s absolute confidence in the quality of our plants shines through – every hardy plant we offer comes with a sturdy 2-year guarantee.

We understand the importance of expert advice, which is why our knowledgeable plants people are readily available in-store to provide guidance. If we don’t have a specific item in stock, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. We will do our best to source the perfect plant for you.

Eco Conscious Gardening

We’re deeply committed to sustainability, embracing ecofriendly practices that not only nurture your garden but also care for the environment. From using biodegradable Vipots to

National Collection

opting for peat-free compost, we’re dedicated to ensuring your garden flourishes while leaving a positive impact on the planet. Our nurseries achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by becoming 100% peat-free. Here, we grow our own vegetables and bedding plants destined for our garden centre shelves. Each year, we lovingly pot on over 6,000 roses, 1200 trees, and 6,000 bedding plants without the use of peat.

At Groves Nurseries, our reputation knows no bounds when it comes to our stunning collection of violets. As proud custodians of the National Collection of Viola odorata and Parma Violets, overseen by the passionate duo of Clive Groves and his daughter, Becky, we’re recognised worldwide for our dedication to these delicate blooms.

Violet season starts in late winter, gracing us with gentle flowers from January until March. Whether you prefer to wander through our garden centre or peruse our offerings online, you’ll discover a delightful array of violets awaiting your admiration.
