Planning Board to continue zoning amendment discussion

The Jamestown Planning Board will have their regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall, 301 East Main Street. The public is invited to attend.

At the Nov. 10 meeting, the Board voted 3-2 to reject a rezoning amendment

“To rezone approximately 6.53 acres +/from Main Street (MS) and Commercial/ Main Street Transitional (C/MST) to Conditional Zoning-Residential/Main Street

Transitional (CZ-R/MST) the properties include 207, 209, 301 West Main St. (Parcel #160256, 160266, and 160265) currently zoned as Main Street and 305 West Main St. (Parcel #160261) currently zoned as Commercial/Main Street Transitional.”

The parcels lie in part across from James-

town Elementary School.

Burkely proposes a development of up to 138 units of a multifamily residential community. This is within both the West Main and Town Center Future Land Use designations and within walking distance to downtown shopping and entertainment.

Burkely’s proposed plan includes a mix of mansion or manor-style apartments fronting West Main Street and three-story apartment buildings toward the rear of the site. The design of the buildings would be compatible with the Jamestown National Register Historic District in which it is located. They would look like large single-family homes. All parking would be behind these apartment buildings.

The Board voted to continue the public hearing to December for more discussion.

A copy of the proposed amendment is on file in the Town Clerk’s office for inspection by all interested citizens.

Lydia’s bridge to star in indie film

By C arol B rooks

A short indie feature film is being planned about Jamestown’s most famous “resident” — Lydia. While Lydia is not, and never has been a resident of the town, her story is well-known.

In September, Speaks Film & Media Productions LLC, of Winston-Salem, spent time filming at what has become known as Lydia’s Bridge, the old railroad underpass beside East Main Street.

“The feature script is currently being written by a local screenwriter and

responding to a traffic accident on Dillon Road at Bales Chapel Road at 6:30 p.m. found Ostin Roca, 26, lying in the road. He was declared dead at the scene. Roca, who was dressed in black, was hit by a hit-andrun driver, but a witness

on the scene followed the car and called 9-1-1. Police soon found the car and Tyrone Purvis was cited for misdemeanor hit-and-run. Neither speed nor impairment were factors in the incident on Purvis’ part because police determined Roca was already lying in the road when he was hit. There was no evidence he had been struck by another vehicle.

Jamestown-area residents have become accustomed to the Christmas Candlelight Tour at Mendenhall Homeplace.

This year, however, the Historic Jamestown Society, which staged the Candlelight Tour for several years, has switched things up, offering a Mendenhall Homeplace Open House Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Guests are invited to come to the over 200-yearold holiday-decorated Richard Mendenhall house following the Jamestown Christmas Parade, Tree Lighting and Kids ‘n Claus at the Public Library.

“Come for family photo opportunities inside Mendenhall Homeplace and outside with our historic Christmas sleigh at the barn,” said Elizabeth Greeson, one of the organizers. It is the same sleigh Santa Claus just rode in the Christmas Parade.

“Also come with your family to warm around the fire pit, share cider, hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows. Traditional musicians are invited to join for a jam circle around the fire for everyone to join in and sing Christmas Carols.”

If you have never been to Mendenhall Homeplace, this is your chance to get a taste of how the family lived in the early 1800s. It is a day of festive holiday fun beginning at 3 p.m. with the Christmas Parade. Mendenhall Homeplace is located at 603 W. Main St., across from the entrance to High Point City Lake Park.

Turkey giveaway helps four nonprofits

By norma B. dennis

freela N ce writer ndworddesign@gmail.com

For several years Ryan Richards has used the Thanksgiving season to provide turkeys to nonprofit organizations to aid in their ministries.

Richards understands many of the problems people have in life. He had a difficult childhood and as an adult was homeless at one point — living in his car and later a motel room — and facing two brain surgeries. When he was back on his feet, he found himself with the option of buying a house or growing a business.

His teenage daughter agreed he should start a business and Richards currently lives in an apartment, in year four of a five-year business plan. His company, Jamestown Logistics, has proven to be successful and Richards serves as a middleman for companies that need to ship their products.

“I provide a service so companies can focus on other details of running their business and I can find truckers to haul their goods,” Richards explained, simplifying his job description.

He is now in the process of locating his company to the heart of Jamestown, opening in the former “Jamestown News” location.

“At first I did not understand why I had so many problems in life,” Richards said. “But I realized I made it through so I could help someone in the future.”

This year, his annual turkey giveaway included four organizations: Fish & Loaves Mission Program, ProjectFive2, Greater Piedmont Adult & Teen Challenge and CityServe of the Triad. He coordinated the project with Alex

The Hand-to-Hand Food Pantry, located at 2103 Penny Road, provides food to those in need on the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

Clients who want to select clothes or other items may arrive at 8 a.m.

We regret the error about the day of the month in the original story on Nov. 26.

UNCSA alum, Autumn Karen,” said Dimitri Dyó, project manager for Speaks Film. “It will heavily feature not only the legend, but will also lean on the culture of the Triad and other locations around Jamestown. The film is a parallel narrative: half in the past, where we explore Lydia’s life; half in the present, where her ghost is trying to find closure.”

According to Dyó, the premise of the Southern gothic horror film, subject to modification as the script is developed, is, “On a rainy Southern prom night, a teenager fleeing her boyfriend nearly hits a girl in a vintage gown under an abandoned bridge, falling into a neverending cycle of supernatural violence.”

That description differs somewhat from the Lydia story we all know, where

there is a car crash at the old underpass. Later, people have claimed they picked up a woman on a foggy night and take her home, only to learn she has been dead for years.

“The legend of Lydia is famous in the area!” Dyó said. “The creative team has been aware of it for many years — too long to remember how long ago we heard about it.”

The creative team is based in the Triad, primarily Winston-Salem and Greensboro.

“We filmed a short proof of concept film based on the legend of Lydia’s Bridge,” Dyó said. “Lead producer David Williamson and writer Autumn Karen as well as most of our largely North Carolinian cast and crew, have long been fascinated by the story, and filmed this proof of concept as part of the pre-development for an upcoming feature-film based on Lydia’s story.”

Due to the rainy evening, the film crew had to make some adjustments, but it worked out in the end.

“The short film is currently in post-production, so the footage is in the can, and we did stick to our original filming dates in early September,” Dyó said. “The first day of production was threatened by a sudden storm and heavy rain, but due to quick thinking and flexibility from cast and crew, we were able to protect the equipment, reshuffle scenes, and completed our scenes for that day. The second day was rain free.

“The weather definitely made for a good behindthe-scenes story in addition to adding on-screen atmosphere,” he added.

The production company worked with Town Manager Matthew Johnson to arrange the filming and were able to have a few Jamestown residents help with the crew.

Dyó could not say when the movie would be released.

“We are looking at a festival run in North Carolina and across the United States throughout 2026,” he said. “Where to catch the film during that time will depend on jurors and selections.”

Wilson, store manager of Walmart Neighborhood Market in High Point, to get the turkeys. Nicole French, who runs the nonprofit RePURSEpose that helps women going through breast cancer, connected him with organizations that could use them.

Fish & loaves mission Program (belize central america Jurisdiction) is an outreach of the Church of God in Christ, locally under the leadership of Bishop Alber Quick of Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ in High Point.

“The turkeys we received were given to families and seniors who may not have been able to afford food during the holiday,” said Bishop K.J. Rogers of the H.W. Fields Cathedral. “It was such a blessing for a business owner to give a spark of hope to those in need.”

The Fish and Loaves Mission Program also will give out food and conduct wellness checks at the H.W. Fields Cathedral in Greensboro on Dec. 13.

ProjectFive2 is in its 10th year of service to the community. Started by Omar Rojas, the group feeds approximately 500 people at its annual traditional Thanksgiving meal.

“We provide help for the transitional community,” Taren Fox said. “Some people call them homeless, but we recognize they are not at the end (of their journey), just where they are at the moment.

“We collaborate with the community as much as possible to provide lunches monthly.”

Rojas began the project by feeding children on the east side of Greensboro during the summer when they were not in school. The program was later expanded to provide bag lunches to those visiting the Interactive Resource Center, a day shelter for the homeless. At Thanksgiving they provide dinner in trays at the IRC and have entertainment.

“We want to change lives and make them feel normal for at least a day,” Rojas said. “Some of the turkeys we received this year went toward the meal and others were given to families in need.”

greater Piedmont adult & Teen challenge is a faith-based discipleship program to help men 18 and older overcome drug, alcohol and other life-controlling issues. The live-in program lasts seven months.

There are programs in every state as well as some other countries. Affiliated with the Assemblies of God Church, the national office is located in Springfield, Mo. The program recently celebrated 50

years of service.

“Participants go through educational classes to help them understand the cause of their problem,” George Rhye, the local director explained. “Believing Jesus is the one to help, we apply the word of God to their lives. 80 percent of the students will not return to their addiction.

“Those who can, pay to participate, but we do not turn anyone away. A thrift store named Blessingdales, on the 11-acre campus at 1910 Boulevard St. in Greensboro, helps fund the program and we have other fundraisers. Part of the program is giving back to the community. We take the men to other places to serve.”

After graduation, participants may opt to move to an apartment on campus, get a job and pay rent.

There are currently 16 men in the Greensboro program. On Thanksgiving their families were able to come for the day to spend time and enjoy a meal together.

cityserve of the Triad, located in Jamestown, received turkeys as well.

“The turkeys were frozen when we got them so we opted to keep them in our freezers and give them out at Christmas,” said Dawn Sanders, executive director of CityServe. “Turkeys are something people don’t always get blessed with or indulge in on their own. Receiving them allows people to use their money for other things and helps them know they are loved.”

Richards is familiar with CityServe because it started at Renaissance Church, which he attends. He also helps lead a volunteer team that passes out food at the CityServe location on the second Saturday of each month.

“Ryan does a lot of work behind the scenes, not looking for recognition,” Sanders said. “Without his contribution we could not do what we do.”

“I find out the need and try to meet it,” Richards said. “Next year I would like to have a turkey giveaway from my business location for organizations or local families in need. I also would like to support other activities for the community such as a farmer’s market. I want to create an environment for people to come and enjoy what Jamestown has to offer — to be part of it.

“My contributions now are just for the moment,” he added. “It is the other organizations that do things everyday. They are the boots on the ground, changing people’s lives and making a real difference. Their work is a beautiful thing.”
