Twyford House Winchester

Project Context - Challenge In this project, I designed a mixed-use housing concept aimed at accommodating different types of housings, encompassing both high-end and affordable options. In response to the diversity of the community on the site, our emphasis was placed on fostering social interaction and promoting landscape led development. To achieve this, we integrated shared public spaces into the design, such as gardens, parking areas, and pedestrian-friendly roads.

A crucial aspect of our approach involved navigating the UK planning system and ensuring the integration of the project with its natural surroundings. This was achieved while respecting the site’s topography and existing tree positions.

Project Context - Challenges In this individual project, I uncovered a growing pressure on the population of East London caused by an unexpectedly rapid property release and an upsurge in the demand for council housing, particularly within Hackney Borough. Collaborating closely with my project partner, Autonomy, I observed a transition of shops into residential spaces.

Drawing upon my skills in urban analysis and community engagement, I discerned that specific council housing areas faced constraints in accessing local shops. These insights have illuminated the deconstruction of specific buildings along Homerton High Street, resulting in an imbalance in land utilization, wherein residential properties have taken precedence over commercial prospects along the street.

Homerton High Street Project Analysis - Urban Mapping Using urban mapping, I analysed land utilisation and local economic prospects, revealing a notable disproportion between the limited shops and extensive residential presence nearby. In observation, some households grew crops in gardens for daily consumption, offering a potential example for neighbors to utilize communal gardens actively.

Homerton High Street Project Analysis - SWOT Through the SWOT analysis, I identified the two predominant challenges on Homerton High Street; Economic and Environment, which led me choosing “Green Economy” as urban development framework.

Urban design strategy - land use LAND USE INTERVENTION I conceptualised urban development intervention with a renovation of abandoned buildings for mixed-use functions between residences, small businesses, or shops, space for an apprenticeship, and service functions (storage building, parking building, and recycling building).

STORAGE The storage warehouse and railway arch were proposed to accommodate the needs of local groceries, cafes, and restaurants. The introduction of flexible self-storage solutions meant that individuals did not have to possess a permanent storage space; they could adjust the spaces based on their specific requirements.

Homerton High Street Urban design strategy - Urban Farming Building upon the insights gathered from community gardens within certain residences, I presented an enhanced vision of urban farming featuring a recycling system. This approach enables the community to recycle compost for a self-sustaining agricultural practice.

URBAN FARMING Inspired by existing community gardens, I developed the idea of urban farming to support local groceries and cafes/restaurants. This could provide income for both residents and the community garden through vegetable and fruit cultivation. Additionally, it has the potential to cut delivery costs for businesses and reduce emissions, benefiting the environment.

Urban design strategy - Green Linkage I envisioned enhancing the local economy around Homerton High Street by interconnecting green pedestrian paths among retail and business areas. This concept was linked with a central parking structure, encouraging visitors to stroll along pedestrian paths while exploring. This arrangement supported local businesses, reduced emissions, and improved health.

Gading Elok 3 Residence

Project Context - Challenges This masterplan presented a significant challenge, as it encompassed the incorporation of council housing, private housing, and commercial properties within a comprehensive scheme.

The integration of government-subsidized council houses with the private sector spanned three distinct phases. I proposed a mixed-use living environment idea that emphasized the concept of a ‘15-minute city,’ ensuring that community facilities were within a 15-minute walking distance.

Commencing with Phase A (refer to figure), the development commenced with 858 council housing units, 328 private housing units, and 34 commercial properties. Phase B entailed plans for 1676 council housing units and 112 private housing units. Meanwhile, Phase C aimed for the development of 1950 council housing units and 118 private housing units. Throughout this intricate process, each phase necessitated the creation of public spaces, including those in schools, mosques, multifunction halls, playgrounds, markets, and green areas.

Gading Elok 3 Residence Site analysis To strike a balance between land efficiency, cost-effectiveness, green space provision, affordable housing, and diverse community needs, our team conducted a thorough site analysis from various angles, including:

OPEN SPACE An additional 10% of the total area transitioned into a dynamic open space, hosting a variety of programs to enliven the community. This allocation was divided into 5% for public spaces, including schools and markets, and another 5% for private domains like house gardens.

We conceived the road width concept based on building setbacks. The main road, featuring private houses, serves as the primary access point, spanning a total width of 16 meters (refer to figure 1.1). The road connected to public spaces (schools, mosques, markets, etc.) measures 9 meters in width (refer to figure 1.2). I established a front distance of 6 meters between housing units (refer to figure 1.3). All curbs boast green belts adorned with plants and street lamps, while sidewalks are exclusive to the main roads.

Council house design

I conceptualised the design of the council house to cater to families with incomes below the average per capita. These 60sqm houses, with a 33sqm built area, are designed for small families or groups. They offer a

Gading Elok 3 Residence Temporary Market on Skywalk In the effort to foster social interaction among diverse neighborhoods, I proposed an innovative strategy of introducing an open space with a temporary market on a skywalk above the retail street. This initiative sought to create seamless connectivity between Gading Elok 3 and its earlier developments (Gading Elok 1 and 2). The market served not only to bolster the local economy through vendors but also as a designated space for community gatherings. Moreover, repurposing the street level for a Sunday market during “Car Free Days” furthered economic growth and sustainability objectives.
